The year 1966 marked a significant watershed in modern Irish history. At Easter, the nation paid a dignified and grateful tribute to those who, in 1916, took the decisive step which led to the establishment of the new Irish state. Throughout the centuries of struggle, successive generations of Irish leaders have been conscious of the fact that freedom and independence would not represent a facile panacea for the nation's ills. Our national leaders through the troubled centuries showed a keen awareness that freedom would bring its own challenges and that ultimate vindication of the national effort would depend on the capacity and readiness of our people to avail of the new opportunities which political freedom would present. And so the historic events of 1966 brought a general acceptance of the modern concept of constructive patriotism on which our prosperity in a competitive international environment will depend. We, in Aer Lingus, celebrated our thirtieth anniversary in 1966. Reviewing our growth since that unpretentious five-seater biplane took off from Baldonnel in 1936, one cannot help becoming keenly conscious of the part the national airline has played in developing the economy of the new Ireland. Significant as our record of profitable operation may be, I feel that many of our happiest contributions are not apparent in the accountant's ledger. From the national point of view, it is perhaps more important that the success of Aer Lingus has served to demonstrate the inherent technological capability of a people who had too long been regarded as pastorally orientated. It is, therefore, particularly appropriate that through sponsorship of the Aer Lingus Young Scientists' Exhibition, we in the national airline should make a special effort to give extra stimulus to the study of science in this country and to emphasise the importance of the subject for our youth. We have been gratified by the enthusiastic response of the educational authorities and of teachers and students throughout the country since the project was introduced in 1964. The success of the Young Scientists' Exhibition demonstrates a growing awareness of the importance of scientific training. The number of pupils studying science subjects in our secondary schools has jumped from 36,500 in
1959 /60 to 56,000 in 1964/65. Recently, the Minister for Education indicated that in the next decade we must spend a good deal more on scientific education and there are positive indications that we areto have a national policy for science. I wish to pay-special tribute to the panel of judges whose care and attention in their difficult task is beyond all praise. I also thank the exhibitors themselves for their participation - we hope they and their teachers will feel the effort was worthwhile.
