FOREWORD Thirty-three years have passed since Aer Lingus commenced operations with the flight of the tiny five-seater biplane "lolar" from Baldonnel, Dublin to Bristol, England. We are proud of the fact that from that unpretentious beginning we have grown in stature and are now an airline of international repute operating the latest jet aircraft and carrying well over a million passengers per annum to thirtyone destinations in twelve countries. What I consider to be one of our happiest contributions in Ireland is not immediately apparent in the accountant's ledger. Our five Young Scientists' Exhibitions have, I feel, in some measure stimulated the minds of our students and demonstrated to them and to other members of our community the inherent scientific and technological capabilities of our people. The Exhibitions have also served to emphasise to the thousands of schoolchildren who have participated in or visited them, the importance and relevance of scientific studies in a modern Ireland. This Young Scientists' Exhibition, which is the sixth in the series, features some innovations. We have increased the prize money available by £300 to give a total of £1,450. For the first time the Exhibition will remain open on a Saturday and a Sunday to allow the public better opportunities of viewing the exhibitors' work. Also, a new category, Sociology, has been introduced and should present a varied and interesting selection of projects. I wish to say a special word of thanks to our judges. For many of them this will be the sixth successive occasion on which they have been asked to discharge an onerous and time consuming task. To all members of this distinguished panel we express our gratitude for their help so readily given as well as our appreciation of the honour they do us in consenting to act in this capacity. I thank also the exhibitors themselves for their participation. We trust that they and their teachers will feel the effort was worthwhile
