Twelfth Annual Young Scientists Exhibition 1976

Dara Taispeantas Deag Bliantuil na nEolaithe Oga 1976

Sponsored and organised by Aer Lingus

9th-11th January, 1976

FOREWORD Aer Lingus will celebrate its fortieth anniversary in 1976. We are proud of the fact that from unpretentious beginnings we have grown in stature and are now an airline of international repute, operating the latest jet aircraft to destinations in eleven countries, and carrying over 1.7 million passengers each year. Significant as our record of growth may be, it is perhaps more important from a national point of view, that the success of Aer Lingus has served to demonstrate the technological capabilities of a people who had too long been regarded as pastorally orientated. We found in our employees an aptitude for science and technology coupled with initiative and inventiveness, and it was to build on this aptitude in the youth of Ireland that we conceived the exhibition. Given the opportunity, Irish men and women have shown that they are capable of meeting the demands of an increasingly technological age. The formation and growth of Aer Lingus is one example of this capability. Our first Young Scientists Exhibition, held in 1965, was essentially tentative and experimental. Nothing of the kind had ever been attempted before in Ireland. The response not only fulfilled our optimistic hopes but set us an unexpected problem in catering for a large number of entries. This was a problem we were pleased to encounter, and to solve. The idea of an annual science exhibition was endorsed on all sides. Nowadays the Young Scientists Exhibition is perhaps the most exciting and well known event in the Irish schools' calendar. Entries this year stand at 900, a sizeable increase on the 1965 total of 230.

There has been a steady improvement in the standard of projects exhibited in successive exhibitions. The number of students studying science in post-primary schools has doubled. Students have learned how to discern and understand scientific criteria, and they have raised their sights accordingly. Many similar exhibitions are now being organised at local level throughout the country. We welcome this development and we will give it every support we can. Prize money amounting to ÂŁ2,765 will be available to competitors this year. While the winning of awards will always be considered important, it must never be forgotten that the knowledge and experience the exhibitors gain in the course of preparing their projects is also of great importance. This applies equally to those who win prizes and to those who do not. In any event, there can be no winners without losers and frequently the line between the two is very fine indeed. Without the support of every competitor the Young Scientists Exhibition would not be the exciting success that it truly is. I wish to take this opportunity of thanking all those who have contributed in so many ways to the success of this exhibition. To our distinguished judges, we wish to express our gratitude for their help so readily given, as well as our appreciation of the honourthey do us in consenting to act in this capacity. We are grateful to parents and teachers everywhere for the advice and encouragement they give exhibitors, and to the exhibitors themselves without whom there would be no exhibition.

Chief Executive Aer Lingus Underlying our wish to encourage young people to take a greater interest in science, is the hope that more and more of them will follow it as a career and so give Ireland the biologists, chemists, geographers and physicists that she needs. We are happy to say that a great number of those students who participated in previous exhibitions are working in various branches of science today.

Feature Displays at The Young Scientists Exhibition European Communities Exhibit (Presented by the Irish Office of the Community.) This exhibit is designed to test your knowledge of the European Community and through your participation, to inform you of what the community means for Ireland. It consists of a bank of twenty-four questions to which visitors respond at the touch of a button. If they are correct the answer is flashed in colourful graphic form on an eye level screen. If they answer incorrectly, they will automatically be invited to try again from a list of alternative answers. The exhibit also features panels depicting Ireland's contribution through the centuries, to the development of Europe, as well as her current contribution through her membership of the EEC. A wide range of easy to read literature about the Community is distributed, free of charge, and visitors may enrol themselves on mailing lists. Moon Rock Exhibit This exhibit contains moon rock from the Taurus Littrow Valley of the moon. The moon rock is a gift from the American people to the people of Ireland, as a symbol of the unity of human endeavour. The exhibit also includes the Irish flag carried to the moon aboard Spacecraft America, during the Apollo XVII mission in 1972. Display by the Air Education Council of the Irish Aviation Club The Air Education Council was founded in response to a request by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale, for member countries to promote air education. The display by the Council in this exhibition includes model aircraft and samples of equipment used in ballooning, parachuting and hang-gliding. Members of the associations governing sporting aviation in Ireland will be in attendance, and will provide information on the various activities in aviation sport. The exhibit also includes the winning projects from the annual project and essay competition organised by the Air Education Council. Information on all aspects of air education in Ireland and the United States is available at the stand.
