Fourteenth Annual Young Scientists Exhibition 1978
Ceathru Taispeantas Deag Bliantiiil na nEolaithe 速ga 1978
Sponsored and organised by Aer Lingus
FOREWORD We are very pleased to note once again that this exhibition-now in its fourteenth yearhas reached another record level of participation by Ireland's young scientists. This catalogue lists an entry of 487 exhibits, involving a total of 1,100 students which represents an increase of some 100 on last year. We view this continuing upwards trend as an illustration of the new direction chosen by Irish youth in preparing to enter the main stream of national endeavour. Perhaps, understandably, we also derive some satisfaction from the evidence that Aer Lingus' major sponsorship effort continues to help speed this important adjustment in educational and career outlooks. As a communityowned enterprise we are happy in that knowledge. Another feature of the exhibition which we are pleased to welcome this year is the programme of talks and discussions on scientific topics, organised in association with the Royal Dublin Society and various scientific and teaching bodies. Among the distinguished speakers at this inaugural Young Scientists Exhibition Workshop for teachers will be Professor E. T. S. Walton, Ireland's only Nobel prize-winner in science (1958). We believe this workshop will add an important new dimension to our annual science exhibition. We wish to record our sincere appreciation of the continuing encouragement and support which the Young Scientists Exhibition receives from the Department of Education; the Department of Economic Planning and Development; and the National Science Council. Again I must record our sincere thanks to the Royal Dublin Society for the facilities and courteous co-operation extended to us each year. Our thanks go also to the Philips organisation who automatically elect our winner to compete in their European Contest for Young Scientists and Inventors, to World Book and Childcraft International for the special prizes they donate for schools and teachers and the prize of a week-long science trip to Britain for the Best Group; to the
European Community office, for the prize of a group trip to Brussels . We must also record our thanks to the panel of distinguished judges , without whose unstinted help we could not mount this exhibition; and to all the teachers whose students have participated at the 1978 event. Finally, of course, Aer Lingus extends warm thanks to every student who participated. It is sad that not all of them will leave with prizes, but each and every one must be congratulated for making the effort to compete.
