Fifteenth Annual Young Scientists Exhibition 1979

Cuigiu Taispeantas Deag Bliantuil na nEolaithe Oga 1979

Sponsored and organised by Aer Lingus

FOREWORD

Judges

The fifteenth Young Scientists Exhibition is upon us and Aer Lingus once again provides a platform for Irish youth, their teachers and parents, who make this great annual event possible. Over the years Aer Lingus has pioneered the use of advanced technology in Ireland in its own business and we are proud to have initiated and fostered this most successful exhibition.

Chairman:

The first exhibition was organised in 1965 at a time when science as a school subject was the choice of a minority of students. Today, the annual Young Scientists Exhibition is established as a major event in the Irish schools' calendar; the number of students studying science subjects at second level has increased by 400%; Ireland has a new National Board for Science and Technology, and our young scientists in three consecutive years have been voted among the best in Europe. Last year's Young Scientist of the Year, Donald McDonnell (whose project is again on display this year) went on to compete with young scientists from 15 countries and won the top award of ÂŁ1,200 at the Philips European Contest, in Eindhoven, Holland. The success of the Young Scientists Exhibition is only made possible with the help and encouragement of many people. We must pay special tribute to the teachers who help us to select entries and make arrangements to stage the exhibition. To our panel of judges, all eminent scientists, we again extend warmest thanks for the wonderful work they do. We would also like to express thanks to the Department of Education and the National Board of Science and Technology for their encouragement and support and to the Royal Dublin Society for the facilities and co-operation extended to us each year. Our thanks go also to the Philips organisation for giving our winner the opportunity to represent Ireland in their European contest and to the World Book Company and the European Community Office for the valuable prizes they donate for schools and exhibitors. With their help, and the help of many other prize-giving organisations, we can reward even more of the students who put so much work into preparing projects for the exhibition. Finally, Aer Lingus extends congratulations and thanks to all the exhibitors for making this event what it isa positive lead for Ireland's continuing steady advance in science and technology.
