Catalogue 10p

Foreword Aer Lingus is again happy and proud to provide Ireland's young scientists and technologists with this platform on which to demonstrate and test the merit of their work. We see the establishment and continuing success of this annual exhibition as part of the ground-swell of public appreciation of the value and pertinence to Ireland of all scientific advancement. One of Aer Lingus' stated aims is "to contribute to the enrichment of the community in its educational, social and cultural affairs". While we engage in many other activities related to that aim, it is clear that the Young Scientists Exhibition contributes most towards its fulfilment. We acknowledge again with much appreciation the efforts of the many people and organisations who work together to mount this exhibition. Special tribute must be paid to our panel of judges, whose care and attention to a difficult task are beyond all praise; and to the teachers who give sympathetic guidance to our young exhibitors. Our thanks goes to the Department of Education, and to the National Board for Science and Technology (NBST) for their encouragement and practical help; and to the Royal Dublin Society for the facilities and generous cooperation extended to us. Thanks also to Philips Electrical (Ireland), who sponsor our Young Scientists to their European Contest; and to the many other prize-giving organisations associated with the exhibition. Finally, our congratulations to each and every considerable and efforts Their exhibitor. achievements reflect great credit on themselves, their families and their schools.

Judges

Message from the Minister for Education, Mr. John P. Wilson, T.D. As Minister for Education I am delighted to have the opportunity of congratulating Aer Lingus on the development and success of the Young Scientists Exhibition. Since 1965 this competition has served to focus attention on science and technology. It attracts entries from all over the country. Over one hundred students from Northern Ireland are competing this year and I heartily welcome them to Dublin. I understand that competition for the individual awards is intense. I am delighted to note that winners of the first prize have gone on to win the top awards in Europe. I must also mention my great interest in the group projects. Co-operation between citizens is an essential part of life and it is equally essential for success in research and development. The projects submitted tend to reflect topics of the day. Hence we are not surprised to find this year increased interest in conservation of energy, computers and micro-chips. The Young Scientists Exhibition is responding to the needs of our time. Traoslaim aris d'Aer Lingus ar feabhas an chomortais seo. Td muintir na hEireann buioch doibh as ucht an cunamh ata a thabhairt don eolaiocht.

SPECIAL FEATURES AT THE AER LINGUS YOUNG SCIENTISTS EXHIBITION. AER LINGUS YOUNG SCIENTISTS EXHIBITION COMPUTERISED INFORMATION SYSTEM Location: Main Hall This year, for the first time, entries for the exhibition were processed on the Aer Lingus computer at Dublin Airport. This is the latest function to be performed by the airline's computer, which already provides a comprehensive passenger reservations system, a technical inventory system and is also employed in accounting, cargo, catering and personnel administration. A computerised information system is being provided at the RDS by Cara Data Processing Ltd, using Datapoint computers. This system will provide on-the-spot information on projects entered for the exhibition and will assist the organisers in the administration of the event. Cara Data Processing Ltd. is the largest computer services company in Ireland.

LAST YEAR'S "YOUNG SCIENTIST OF THE YEAR" PROJECT ( KAREN RUDDOCK) AND CURRENT EUROPEAN YOUNG SCIENTIST Location: Main Hall Seventeen-year-old Karen Ruddock, Clonroche, Co. Wexford, a student of Alexandra College, Milltown, Dublin, won the top award in the European Philips Contest for Young Scientists and Inventors, held in Amsterdam in May, 1980. Her prize was ÂŁ1,700, a trophy and one week's holiday. Karen who was elected Aer Lingus Young Scientist of the Year in January 1980 was nominated by Philips Electrical (Ireland) Limited to take part in the contest. She competed against thirty-five young scientists from fourteen countries and she was one of the youngest contestants in the event.

"SAVING ENERGY SAVES YOU MONEY" Location: Industries Hall The Department of Energy stand stresses the importance of a more rational use of energy in Ireland. The general theme is "saving energy saves you money". Ways of conserving energy in different sectors are highlighted and visitors to the stand are invited to participate in a competition to estimate the saving arising over a three week period from insulating hot water cylinders. The stand also contains models of an electricity generating windmill and an oil rig.

SPACE RESOURCE

IRELAND'S NEWEST

Location: Industries Hall Her project was an investigation of the relationship between the chemical composition of certain Irish lichens and their tolerance to various environments. The fourteen member jury made the following observations on the project. The work is of a high standard. The methods are sophisticated and well applied; the chemical as well as the anatomical and physiological investigations have been carried out carefully and critically. There are some interesting results which might also be valuable in the field of environmental pollution research".

PREVIOUS YOUNG SCIENTISTS AND THEIR CAREERS TO DATE - AN INFORMATION PANEL.

The National Board for Science & Technology display will demonstrate the practical uses of Space Technology and its relevance to Ireland. Communications, earth observation, weather forecasting and the space/lab project are the main features of the exhibit which will include a fullsized model of the first European Communications Satellite - Orbital Test Satellite (OTS). This exhibit has been organised with the assistance of the European Space Agency which was established in 1976 to promote co-operation between countries, in developing space research and technology.
