In Aer Lingus we derive much satisfaction from the knowledge that so many thousands of Irish students in all parts of our island spend valuable time and effort in preparing an exhibit for entry in this great annual festival of science. Undoubtedly this 1982 catalogue, like those of previous years, will list the names of many who are destined to attain the highest levels of competence and leadership in their chosen fields; and we are pleased to know that a high proportion will find it beneficial from time to time in the years immediately ahead to draw attention to their such Clearly, event. the in participation participation is now firmly established as an endorsement of special talents allied to a keen desire for high personal achievement. Those are among the rich qualities of youth that are vital to progress in any modern society. Again, it is a pleasure to offer on behalf of the sponsors and all those associated with this exhibition, our warmest congratulations to the 1981 Young Scientist of the Year, Miss Catherine Conlon (Muckross Park College, Dublin), on her fine success at the Philips-sponsored European contest for Young Scientists and Inventors, held in Brussels last May. She competed against thirtyfive other entrants from fifteen countries, and emerged as co-winner of the top award. Of our six entrants to date in that prestigious event three were outright winners, one placed in the top five, another in the top seven, and Miss Conlon a cowinner of the top award. Apart from representing a daunting challenge to future Irish entrants, we believe that record provides an encouraging testimony to the standards prevailing in Irish scientific training. Aer Lingus acknowledges again with gratitude the work, dedication and support of many people in mounting this eighteenth annual exhibitionamong them, the teachers of science subjects in our schools and colleges; our panel of eminent and talented judges; the Department of Education, the National Board for Science and Technology (for a significant grant and practical participation); AnCO (The Industrial Training Authority) and the Irish Heart Foundation for interesting feature displays; and the Royal Dublin Society for its 3
generous co-operation. Our thanks also to Philips Electrical (Ireland) who sponsor our winners' participation in their European contest; and to the prize-giving and companies many other organisations, whose names we list elsewhere in

Exhibition Layout and Classification of Projects Leagan amach an Taispeantais agus range na dThionscnamh Please refer to exhibition floor plans situated at hall entrances for location of projects. Individual projects are grouped in three categoriesBiological Sciences; Mathematical Physical and Applied Sciences; and Environmental and Social Sciences. These categories are subdivided into Junior, Intermediate and Senior sections (Junior 12-14, Intermediate 14-16, Senior 16-18), and projects are listed alphabetically in the sections. Note : Projects have been classified according to the descriptions supplied by the exhibitors. The judges reserve the right to transfer projects to a different category. Group projects are accepted in a separate section and are not classified according to subject discipline. They are divided into Junior, Intermediate and Senior sections. Late Cancellations Cealuchain Deanacha Due to late notification of withdrawal by exhibitors, some projects which have been included in this catalogue may not be on display. This will account for some possible gaps in the numbering system of stands.

SPECIAL FEATURES AT THE AER LINGUS YOUNG SCIENTISTS EXHIBITION
in the contest. She competed against thirty-five young scientists from fifteen countries. Her project was an extensive investigation of the total structure and the function of the parts, of the webs of two species of spiders.
COMPUTERISED INFORMATION SYSTEM Cara Data Processing Ltd., an Aer Lingus subsidiary, provided the computerisation support for the exhibition using Datapoint computers. This gave the organisers onthe-spot information retrieval and change facilities, enabling them to plan the many aspects of the exhibition culminating in the processing of results at the RDS. SCIENCE AND THE SEARCH OFFSHORE-A Feature by the National Board for Science and Technology Location: Main Hall The display will demonstrate the role of science and technology in offshore exploration-from the first seismic sounding of the sea bed to the decision to develop a full scale oil or gas production area. The exhibit will also include information on career opportunities in the industry.
PREVIOUS YOUNG SCIENTISTS AND THEIR CAREERS TO DATE - AN INFORMATION EXHIBIT Location: Main Hall IRISH HEART FOUNDATION EXHIBIT Location: Industries Hall The programme is designed to create a greater awareness of heart and blood vessel disease and an understanding of the associated risk factors. The technique of cardio pulmonary resuscitation and blood pressure recording will be demonstrated; and training sessions for members of the public will be conducted at regular intervals.
AnCO ( The Industrial Training Authority) Location: Main Hall AnCO will provide an information exhibit on the training facilities and opportunities available to young people. The exhibit will include practical demonstrations of the skills involved in instrumentation, electronics and motor mechanics. YOUNG SCIENTIFIC CITIZEN NEWSDESK Location: Main Hall A daily newsheet produced by Young Citizen Magazine and Aer Lingus.
