Coming of age is the prerogative of youth and it is with the pride and joy reserved for such occasions that we embark on our 21st Aer Lingus Young Scientists Exhibition. It is most appropriate that we should be celebrating our 21st anniversary in International Youth Year. The sponsorship of a programme which helps to develop the scientific and technical skills of young Irish people is particularly appropriate to Aer Lingus. The airline itself pioneered the use of advanced technology in Ireland in its own business; and today we export aviation expertise to airlines in many countries around the world. Aer Lingus also undertakes specialised work for both aerospace and industrial projects. In this 21st anniversary year I would like, on behalf of Aer Lingus, to offer thanks to all those who through the years have supported us in so many different ways. I would like to convey special thanks to the National Board for Science and Technology; the Department of Education; Philips Electrical Ireland Ltd; the Royal Dublin Society; the Westinghouse Electric Corporation; the Commission of European Communities; the Youth Employment Agency; and Cara the Computer People. To all of you I say a sincere thanks for your support and practical help. Our gratitude also to the scientific and professional Institutes who sponsor special awards. We list them and the many prize-giving organisations elsewhere in this catalogue. Once again we have some impressive feature displays made available by the following: the North Eastern Education & Library Board; the Irish Science Teachers Association; Irish Shell Ltd; The Institute of Physics and Philip Harris; and the Aer Lingus Maintenance & Engineering Group. A warm welcome to our former young scientists who have distinguished themselves in their chosen fields, many of whom have gained international recognition and success. I wish to pay a very special tribute to the eminent judges who work closely with us in developing and organising the Young Scientists Exhibition. To this year's panel and to all those woo served in former years we say thank you. In conclusion I extend a warm welcome to this year's exhibitors. I congratulate them and their parents and teachers and I wish them every success.

SPECIAL FEATURES AT THE AER LINGUS YOUNG SCIENTISTS EXHIBITION

IRISH SHELL EDUCATION SERVICE FOR SCHOOLS Location: Main Hall What is a Refinery? Is it safe? Does it pollute the atmosphere? Both teachers and students and other interested groups can find the answer to these and other questions at the Shell Education Stand where films on petro-chemicals and related topics will be shown; and where practical experiments on such subjects as chromatography and diffusion will be carried out. There will also be the opportunity to win your very own oil rig! IRISH SCIENCE TEACHERS ASSOCIATION Location: Main Hall An information centre and a display of scientific apparatus down the years.

COMPUTERISED INFORMATION SYSTEM Cara, The Computer People, an Aer Lingus subsidiary, provided the computerisation support for the exhibition. This enabled the organisers to plan the many aspects of the exhibition culminating in the processing of results at the RDS.

AER LINGUS TECHNOLOGICAL PROGRESS THROUGH THE YEARS Location: Industries Hall

TEACHERS PROGRAMME • Teachers visiting with groups of students can avail of an advisory service for a tour of the exhibition. Check at Front Desk. • Seminar on the new Physics Syllabus organised by the ISTA will be held on Friday Jan 11th at 3pm. Check at Front Desk • A Teachers Centre is located in the Industtries Hall.

The exhibition displays items and systems from our B737 and B747 aircraft next to some of the few available counterparts of the Douglas DC3 aircraft used by Aer Lingus in the 1940s. Engines, flying controls, navigation equipment, landing gear, wheels and brakes, airport facilities, maintenance manuals, processes and materials, inspection equipment including the Ariane Rocket Equipment - all reflect, the technological strides we have made, with the future as a challenge. TRAVELLING SCIENCE & ENGINEERING EXHIBITION Location: Main Hall Feature by the Institute of Physics and Philip Harris A travelling Science & Engineering Exhibitiion to honour the 19th century Carlow scientist and inventor John Tyndall & William Dargan, the 19th century engineer who built most of Ireland's railways and Ulster's canals, is on display. The exhibition has sixty working Tyndall experiments; a centre stand on the Irish involvement in the Giotto Mission for the study of Halley's Comet and a working model of the Dargan Locomotive, `Hibernia', from the Kingstown - Dublin railway, opened 150 years ago.

DEVELOPMENT OF MICROCOMPUTING IN EDUCATION Location: Main Hall The North Eastern Education & Library Board (one of the five Education & Library Boards in Northern Ireland) will outline the Board's programme "Microcomputing in Education;". The aim of the programme is to encourage the use of devices based on the new technology; to enhance and enrich the learning environment of students and to allow them to gain an easy familiarity and awareness of a wide range of microcomputing devices and their applications in work, leisure and recreation. Applications include the use of the microcomputer in simulation, information retrieval, the electronic office, control technology and computer aided design. 10
