Foreword A year ago the Aer Lingus Young Scientists Exhibition celebrated its 21st anniversary. On that occasion we welcomed back former young scientists who have distinguished themselves in their chosen fields. Their success confirms that the exhibition fulfills its central objective - the development of the scientific and technical skills of young Irish people. This year we welcome another 900 young exhibitors who come to the exhibition with fresh ideas and much enthusiasm. I am sure they will benefit from their participation in the exhibition and especially from their experience in undertaking research for their projects. I wish on behalf of Aer Lingus to thank our many sponsors and all those who assist us with the young scientists exhibition. It is a major event with, I am glad to say, a high international reputation. This year the top award winners from the exhibition will participate in the Philips European Science Contest in Oslo; the International Science & Engineering Fair in the United States; an International seminar for young scientists and scholars in Bristol; the European Space Agency Giotto Mission; the EEC Research Centre in the Netherlands and the Nobel Prize Ceremonies in Stockholm. Our thanks to the National Board for Science & Technology; the Department of Education; Philips Electrical (Ireland) Limited; the Royal Dublin Society; the Westinghouse Electric Corporation; the Commission of European Communities; the Youth Employment Agency; and Cara The Computer People. We also extend thanks to the' scientific and professional Institutes and to the many prize-giving organisations listed in this catalogue. Projects have been classified according to the descriptions supplied by the exhibitors. The judges reserve the right to transfer projects to a different category. Na Duaiseanna

The prize fund for 1986 will amount to £15,000. This includes cash prizes and trophies, school and teacher awards, travel to science fairs abroad and mementoes for all participants. The following awards will be made, provided that in the opinion of the judges, the projects reach a desired standard. TOP AWARDS 1. Young Scientist or Scientists of the Year The premier award winner(s) will receive the Aer Lingus perpetual trophy plus £1,000, and entry to the Philips European Science Contest in Oslo, Norway. (Trip sponsored by Philips Electrical Ireland Ltd.) This year's winner will also participate in the Nobel Prize Ceremonies in Stockholm. 2. Best Individual or Runner-up Individual Will receive the Aer Lingus perpetual trophy plus £500 and entry to the International Science and Engineering Fair in Fort Worth, Texas, USA. (Trip sponsored by Westinghouse Electric Corporation.) 3. Best Group and/or Runner-up Group and/or Runner-up individual Will receive the Aer Lingus perpetual trophy plus £300 and a travel scholarship. The Travel Scholarships are as follows:(a) An educational trip to the European Commission Joint Research Centre at Petten in the Netherlands. (Trip sponsored by the Commission of the European Communities, Dublin office). (b) An educational trip to a European Space Agency destination sponsored by the National Board for Science and Technology. CATEGORY AWARDS - Individual and Group Projects There is a section for individual projects and another for group projects. (Group and individual projects do not compete with each other except for the top award.) Each 9

section has three categories - Biological and Ecological Sciences, Physical, Mathematical and Applied Sciences and Environmental and Social Sciences. Within each category there are divisions- Junior, Intermediate and Senior. • First, Second and Third prizes of £90 (£120), £65 (£90), £50 (£65), will be awarded in each age division (27 prizes for individual projects, and 27 for groups). • Prizes of £30 (£50) will be awarded to projects which are well presented, (9 prizes for individual projects, and 9 for groups). • Some 100 prizes for projects highly commended. • Each participant will receive a certificate of display and a memento of their participation in the exhibition. SCHOOL AND TEACHER PRIZES 1. Schools of top award winners (four) will receive a plaque and £50 towards acquiring additional scientific equipment. 2. Token gifts will be awarded to teachers of top award winners and first prize-winners.

SPECIAL AWARDS FOR EXHIBITORS AND SCHOOLS AER LINGUS Two awards for projects related to drug abuse in the community. These are being offered in conjunction with the drug awareness programme. BARNARDO' S-CHILD CARE AGENCY Two awards for projects which contribute to our knowledge about the needs of children in Ireland and suggest possible ways of meeting those needs in the children's own communities. CARA THE COMPUTER PEOPLE Two awards for the best projects in computer studies. THE CONFEDERATION OF IRISH INDUSTRY Two awards for projects which could be developed commercially and perhaps create employment. THE CONFEDERATION OF IRISH INDUSTRY Will award an individual prize in the Geography section of the exhibition for the best roads infrastructure project. AN FORAS TALUNTAIS (The Agricultural Institute) An individual prize for the best Agricultural/Food project. THE INSTITUTE OF BIOLOGY IN IRELAND Two prizes for projects in Biology or Applied Biology. INSTITUTE OF CHEMISTRY OF IRELAND/ ROYAL SOCIETY OF CHEMISTRY To prizes for the best projects in Chemistry or Applied Chemistry.

INSTITUTION OF ENGINEERS IN IRELAND Two prizes for projects in Engineering. THE INSTITUTE OF FOOD SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Two prizes for projects in Food Science. THE INSURANCE INSTITUTE OF IRELAND Two awards for the best projects in road safety and home protection. THE INSTITUTE OF PHYSICS Six prizes for projects in Physics or Applied Physics. IRISH ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY Two prizes for the best projects in Astronomy or Space Science. IRISH COMPUTER SOCIETY Two prizes for projects in computer studies (software). THE NATIONAL REHABILITATION BOARD Two prizes for projects devoted to the development of aids for disabled persons. OPERATIONS RESEARCH & MANAGEMENT SCIENCE SOCIETY IN IRELAND Two awards for projects exhibiting some or all of the following characteristics: (a) use of more than one discipline. (b) use of scientific methods and principles. (c) Innovation, particularly with new product or job potential. PROFESSORS OF BOTANY Two prizes for the best Botanically related exhibits. SOCIOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION OF IRELAND Two prizes to the best projects in Sociology.

SOLAR ENERGY SOCIETY OF IRELAND Two awards for projects dealing with Solar Energy. WATER POLLUTION ADVISORY COUNCIL Two awards for projects dealing with water pollution.

AWARDS FOR SCHOOLS YOUTH EMPLOYMENT AGENCY Five substantial cash awards for schools towards the purchase of scientific equipment. ASSOCIATION OF SECONDARY TEACHERS An award fora school with high success in the exhibition.

INSTITUTION OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS The Callan Medal - for the best individual or group project in Electrical Engineering. 10

SPECIAL FEATURES AT THE AER LINGUS YOUNG SCIENTISTS EXHIBITION COMPUTERISED INFORMATION SYSTEM Cara, The Computer people, an Aer Lingus subsidiary, provided the computerisation support for the exhibition. This enabled the organisers to plan the many aspects of the exhibition culminating in tha processing of results at the RDS.

TELECOM EIREANN This display will demonstrate a comprehensive range of the state-of-the art telecommunications equipment used currently int he network. There is also a representative selection of the most modern customer equipment, eg, digital telephones, viewphones, fascimile machines, electroic keyphone systems and electronic private automatic branch exchanges. ROYAL DUBLIN SOCIETY SCIENCE SERVICE FOR SCHOOLS Will provide a science and technology library. DUBLIN INSTITUTE OFTECHNOLOGY Will present an exhibition of Hdlographics. IRISH SHELL EDUCATION SERVICE FOR SCHOOLS Location: Main Hall What is a Refinery? Is it safe? Does it pollute the atmosphere? Both teachers and students and other interested groups can find the answer to these and other questions at the Shell Educations Stand where films on petro-chemicals and related topics will be shown; and where practical experiments on such subjects as chromatography and diffusion will be carried out.
