FOREWORD Aer Lingus has always been to the fore in Ireland in making advances in Science and Technology. With further significant progress in recent years we are also well to the fore among international airlines. We have bought the best new high technology aircraft to expand and renew our fleet as we cater for the tremendous growth in passenger numbers. We have recently installed an advanced 737 flight simulator which brings Aer Lingus pilot training into the 21st century and also provides training for other airlines. Airmotive Ireland -ourjetengine overhaul subsidiary has quickly established itself as a world class company. Devtec is engaged in product design and manufacture forthe aerospace industry, and Toptech Ireland a joint company with the ESB supplies special processes to the computer industry.
The way in which the Young Scientists Exhibition has evolved would not have been possible without considerable and freely given assistance which Aer Lingus receives in organising the annual exhibition. I thank our many sponsors listed in this catalogue for their generosity and practical help. In particular, I thank the Taoiseach and the Minister for Science and Technology for the grant being made available though EOLAS - The Irish Science and Technology Agency. Our thanks to the Westinghouse Corporation and to the European Commission office In Ireland, who sponsor our top winners in international science fairs; and to the RDS for their co-operation and assistance. A special tribute must be paid to the panel of judges who work closely with Aer Lingus in planning the exhibition and judging the projects. Their expertise and dedication is the cornerstone of the exhibition.
The airline's most recent and ambitious project is the expansion of our Maintenance and Engineering business to take advantage of the upsurge in world aviation. New hangers are being built at Dublin Airport and 600 additional skilled people will be recruited to gear up a maintenance base which will service aircraft from around the world.
A warm welcome to this year's exhibitors, their teachers and their parents. Are Lingus is proud to provide a platform for your endeavours and to give public recognition to the work you have done.
Ireland is becoming a significant supplier of services and skills to the Aerospace industry and Aer Lingus is at the centre of that development. We will continue to recruit large numbers of pilots and other skilled staff in the next decade to cater for growth in our main air transport and in our engineering business.
Q:)', ^^t kw^ Cathal Mullan Chief Executive
Through our annual Young Scientists Exhibition we seek to stimulate interest in science and technology and help create a pool of talented young people who are comfortable with a hi-tech world choosing careers accordingly. The key factor in Ireland's success in attracting international industries in new technologies to Ireland, has been the availability of a highly educated young workforce.

YOUNG SCIENTISTS OF EUROPE Britain, Denmark , France, Germany , Italy, Netherlands, Ireland. Location: Main Hall Last year the Commission of the European Communities inaugurated a science contest for the top young scientists of Europe. The contest, which was held in Brussels in October, was set up to promote the ideals of co-operation and exchange between young scientists and to provide a stimulus for the development of promising young scientific talent There were 53 finalists from the twelve member states and from Austria. Norway and Switzerland. Ireland's entry by Sinead Finn and Grace O'Connor shared first prize in the contest (See page XIII). To mark Ireland's Presidency of the EC, Aer Lingus invited six of the top winners from the European event to Dublin as guest exhibitors. Their work is featured in a special area in the exhibition and we are delighted to welcome them to Dublin.
Britain MARK MATHIESON (Age 16) Voice-Intensity Feedback for Speech-Handicapped Mark Mathieson set out to aid handicapped people who are able to articulate speech correctly but are unable to maintain adequate speech intensity. An example is patients who are suffering from Parkinson's disease. The chosen method, which is known in principal from similar applications, is a voice-intensity feedback system, which requires a careful selection of sensors, a sound electronic and ergonomic design and well thought out experiments to obtain conclusions for clinical applications. The system designed and demonstrated by Mark was considered by the international jury, to be a remarkable achievement for a boy of his age.
Denmark MOGENS MARKUSSEN (Aged 20) Eyewriter, An Eye-Operated Control Unit Mogens Markussen has developed a system by means of which a severty handicapped person can communicate with a computer and. via a computer, with other persons.
France CHARLES COURTIN (Aged 20) OLIVIER HIGELIN (Aged 20) HUGUES NODET (Aged 19) Measurement of Rocket Speed This team has sought to measure by means of the Doppler effect the speed of the rocket which they built and launched during the French amateur rocket launching campaign at Mourmelon in August 1988. This is done by comparing the output of two high frequency oscillators, one of which is in the rocket and drives a transmitter, and the other which is on the launching pad and used as a reference for a ground based receiver. The team have shown an excellent ability to build high accuracy instruments. Germany STEPHAN SCHLITTER (Age 19) Investigations on Conducting Polymers used as Electrodes in Storage Batteries. Most storage batteries used today have electrodes made of inorganic materials, as for instance in the traditional lead storage battery. It would clearly be an advantage, both economically and from the point of view of avoiding pollution, to use polymeric materials which may nowadays be made with'T` - electronsystems which make them intrinsic conductors of electricity. Stephan has carried out investigations of conducting polymers with this purpose in mind. It is a very interesting piece of work with obvious possible practical applications. Italy LINA TOMASELLA (Age 21) Investigation on the Toxicity of Different Dyes used as Tracers Lina Tomasella has conducted a research project of considerable biological importance by studying the effects of certain fluorescent dyes on aquatic animals. The dyes, dissolved in water, are frequently used by geologists and hydrographers to study flow velocity in rivers or subterranean water currents. So far, these dyes have been considered to be harmless to animal life and to ecosystems. This study shows that some of the dyes do indeed have an effect on the aquatic fauna, even at low concentrations.
Systems already exist which permit this kind of communication when a person can operate. with some part of his body. a suitably placed switch. Mogens Markussen has considered the problem of permitting such communication to people who are able to use at least one of their eyes. Mogens' work represents a significant example of the application of information technology in permitting handicapped people to exercise a vital function such as communication.

Netherlands MENNO BOLT (Age 19) ERIC TOONEN (Age 20) PASCAL STEVELMANS (Age 17) Wind Energy Project The contestants have carried out an extensive construction program on a new type of wind turbine (scale mi with a vertical axis designed to blend into a landscape with dunes or gentle hills. They also built a tunnel to test the turbine.
EOLAS - The Irish Science and Technology Agency EOLAS - The Irish Science arid Technology Agency stands at the heart of the development of Irelands technological infrastructure. Exhibitors, students and parents are welcome to visit the EOLAS information stand where experienced staff will be pleased to deal with general and specialised questions relating to science, technology and opportunities for careers in these fields.
In their project they have combined mechanical, electrical and computer directed principles.
Location: Industries Hall.
The contestants combined exceptional mechanical skill with the capacity of using interactive computer methods in an optimised design that presents various novel features.
Videotel Eireann Screenphone Service Demonstrations
Ireland Grace O'Connor (Age 17) Sinead Finn (Age 17) Ursuline Convent, Thurles, Co. Tipperary A Crop Fractionation Industry
As part of the emerging electronic living, new telecommunication and computer based services will occupy an increasing role in our lives. The new SCREENPHONE SERVICE planned to be introduced in the current year will play a significant part in advancing the widespread availability of such services. In France where there are over 5 million users theycall them 'Minitels'.
The project by Grace O'Connorand Sinead Finn isthe product of three years of dedicated and careful scientific study. It was designed to utilise bio-mass products such as grass and other farm crops for purposes other than animal feed. To utilise the land and associated human resources no longer required in the production of raw materials for food, new uses must be found if we are to maintain the economic and social balance of many parts of Europe. Alternative outlets for farm crops are urgently needed. "Whole Crop Fractionation" offers the opportunity to divert surplus crops or crop residues into alternative products currently imported into the Community including Ireland viz protein for foods and feed upgrading; fuel ethanol: pigments for poultry and animal feed; citric acid, biogas and leaving a residuethat may still be used for animal feed. The most ambitious outcome would be as a feedstock for a biorefinery process.
Lncalinic Industries Hall
Demonstration services at the Young Scientists Exhibition will include: ■ airline timetables ■ telebanking ■ teleshopping ■ CAO applications and courses '89 ■ and a selection of the French services. The Videotel Eireann consortium comprises a group of leading Irish business interests together with Telecom Eireann and France Telecom. The project is being supported by the European Community under the Regional Fund.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION - ARE BIOSCRUBBERS THE SOLUTION
Over the past two years Aer Lingus has recruited thirteen hundred people and we expect to be able to provide more jobs in future years. The jobs are varied. One thing that they do have in common is that the airline is an exciting place to work in and the opportunities for development and promotion are good. Jobs likely to arise include: trainee pilot, cabin crew (air hostess and steward), craftworkers, apprentices, operatives (aircraft loaders, storepersons, drivers, catering workers) and a wide range of jobs which we advertise under the heading of'Careers in Aer Lingus'. This latter group covers working in our ground passenger service areas, reservations and travel shops, administration, financial and planning functions and secretarial work.

How to apply : Aer Lingus recruits for all positions strictly in response to advertisements in the public press. Please do not send us uninvited applications. These advertisements will appear in the national press at the start of our recruitment programmes. All jobs are open to both women and men. Do not rule yourself out for any job because it was traditionally seen as being done by one sex only. Aer Lingus Employment Section January 1990
