It gives me great pleasure to once again pen the welcoming words to this annual Aer Lingus event of science and communication. The young scientists we see here in these halls, who continuously amaze us with their energy and enthusiasm, have truly earned the name scientist as they pursue their goals in the interests of uncovering knowledge. I salute their bold visionary thinking and determined patience. In being scientists, and not alone technologists, will they have the skills to change and improve the environment in which we live.
As a contest that has been open to young people from all 32 counties since its inception in 1965, it gives us great hope to welcome young scientists to Dublin from every corner of the country in a new climate of peace and reconciliation. We especially welcome the Armagh Planetarium to the exhibition and hope that this is the beginning of greater co-operation and exposure to things northerly. As a company whose business involves crossing borders, overflying obstacles and uniting people of all cultures and differences, we are glad to be a guiding force in this powerhouse of youth scientific research that is the Aer Lingus Young Scientists Exhibition. The exhibition has always been a constant beacon of hope that embodied the positive attributes sought by the new Aer Lingus, and will continue to illuminate the way forward to continued success in serving Irish society.
Science, which knows no borders, nor is impeded by cultural differences, creates opportunities for many common goals to be shared by young people both internationally and here in Ireland. Aer Lingus looks forward to the role that it can continue to play in these important developments.

DESIGNyard, the Applied Arts Centre at Temple Bar for Aer Lingus, was designed by David Sisk, a graduate of the National College of Art and Design where he majored in glass. David has used recycled glass to make a form which reflects an environmental theme, a melting icicle with a trapped air bubble inside. Also suggested is a scientific instrument with graduated measurements. The shape is also representative of the first shoot that bursts out of the germinated seed, symbolising freshness and newness. Placed on a slab of Connemara marble, the uneven and heavily-veined green marble contrasts dramatically with the smooth finish of the handformed glass object. Sandblasted on the surface of the glass is the Aer Lingus Young Scientists logo. Barnardos Two awards for projects which contribute to our knowledge about the needs of children

Special Features of the Exhibition
Telecom Eireann Radio Communication
`Science at Work' Location: Main Hall
Radio waves belong to the family of electromagnetic waves. Other members of the family are x-rays, Gamma rays and tight. They all obey the same laws as light and can be reflected, refracted and diffracted. These properties allow radio waves to be used for communication without wires. Telecom Eirean will demonstrate this principal through use of Eircell and other telecommunications services via satellite.
This exhibition, within an exhibition, strives to demonstrate and explain the basic principals of science in industry, research, commerce and everyday life. Not only does it aim to encourage young people to consider science as a rewarding and interesting career, but will also give others an understanding of the value of science and its contribution to our lives. We are very pleased that the following important companies in Irish industrial life, represented by industrialists or research and development teams, have taken a key role in this year's Aer Lingus Young Scientists Exhibition.
The Meteorological Service Weather Radar Radar is an echo-sounding device by which the range of a

target is measured by the time taken for a small pulse of transmitted electro-magnetic energy to travel to the target and back again after reflection. In the case of the Meteorological Service, the targets are precipitation.
14
A series of composite radar images from sites in Ireland, the UK and Europe will be shown. The radar echoes will be colour coded to show the different intensities of precipitation and, as the systems can replay a sequence of images, the movement of any particular area of precipitation can be monitored. The display also features a dial-up facility which allows access to the main radar data processor in H.Q and the downloading of the latest images through a telephone
All vegetation reflects light at different wavelengths, both as visible colours and as invisible radiation. There are only small differences between the levels of visible light that are reflected by different types of vegeta-
tion but there are usually large differences between the levels of infrared and near infrared light reflected. Consequently, we can learn a lot more about different types of vegetation by studying the levels of infrared light that are reflected. From studying the Colour Infrared photographic film, it will be possible to identify different tree species, healthy and unhealthy trees, dead trees, and the effects of fertiliser. The three dimensional effects of overlapping photographs can be viewed through a stereoscope which allows onlookers to move around a three dimensional landscape.
Intel Production of the transistor and the Pentium processor. The microprocessor forms the intelligence of PC's and many other circuitry driven devices. The transistor is the main
building block of microprocessor design. Using a Computer Based Training (CBT) package on a PC, Intel will demonstrate a process through which the valence band characteristics of a semi-conductor crystal ie. silicon, are altered in order to create the transistor block. We will show how BI-Polar and CMOS transistors are formed and connected to create a microprocessor with very large scale integration (VLSI).
Newport Synthesis Ltd The significance of chirality in design and development of new drug compounds. The three-dimensional structure of organic molecules allows for chemical isomers which are mirror images of each other. These are known as optical isomers and they usually have very similar chemical and physical properties, making them difficult to isolate and
distinguish. However, when incorporated into drug compounds, optical isomers can have radically different medical effects. Newport Synthesis will demonstrate the processes they use to identify optical-isomer impurities, also how and why the different optical isomers have different biological effects.
The Blood Transfusion Service Board To evaluate the Immune System and select for minimal Graft versus Host reactivity in transplantation The Blood Transfusion Board will show how they evaluate and compare cell surface markers, cell to cell interactions and DNA profiles to select the most suitable donor for patients awaiting transplantation.
TEAM Aer Lingus The gas turbine engine, used on jet aircraft is based upon Newton's second and third laws. Newton's second law states that "a force equals mass by acceleration". That law, combined with Newton's third law, "every action has an equal and opposite reaction", provides for the basis of the gas turbine operation. A good example of the third law is a toy balloon. High pressure air escapes and the baloon moves in the opposite direction. The gas turbine's basic operation is much the some. The action is called jet exhaust, and the reaction is called thrust. Clearly we all have a limited capacity to do physical work. Humanity, through ingenuity, has developed machines, that greatly extend these limitations. By extracting the heat energy, when fuel is burnt in the jet engine, the large commercial aircraft can, take off, travel
great distances at high speed, power all the complex systems, and land safely on another part of the globe. On display is a modern jet engine called the PW4o64 engine, a cut-away model showing the construction of a typical power plant, and a flap unit showing the methods used to harness this energy, to do useful[ work, on a typical commercial aircraft. Location: Main Hall
Forbairt Plastics in Perspective This display, by the Polymer Development Centre, a division of Forbairt, demonstrates the wide-ranging role that plastics play in our modern lifestyle and how critical they are to a broad spectrum of industrial sectors. In recognition of the perceived waste/environmental problem, the exhibit will identify the key
15
methods used to recycle/reuse plastics and will use two Irishbased examples to illustrate how 'recyclate' can be reused. The Young Scientists and Commercial Development Last year, Forbairt and Aer Lingus selected a number of projects which had potential for further industrial and commercial development. During the last year, the young scientists and their projects were introduced to industrialists, manufacturers and the process whereby a scientific research project can become a marketable product in the industrial world. The projects were greeted with enthusiasm and we are pleased to report on the success of this initiative and to present an interim report on those projects which are close to commercial reality.
The Armagh Planetarium Starlab On entering the Industries Hall from the Main Hall, you will see a large grey igloo looming over the exhibitor stands. Enter the Starlab through the airlock entrance and you will find yourself in a strange spaceship which transports 30 people at a time through a tour of the heavens and the night sky. The tour lasts approximately 20 mins and provides an excellent introduction to the stars and the constellations. Location: Industries Hall
