Foreword

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to the 33rd Aer Lingus Young Scientists Exhibition. Even before the curtain came down on last year's Exhibition the young scientists of 1996 were already planning their projects and work schedules for 1997. Twelve months on the results are before us. The unbounded enthusiasm, energy and of course hard work of the young scientists allows us to once again begin a new year in an atmosphere of pride and encouragement. The Young Scientists Exhibition is above all a clear demonstration of the creativity, vision and talent of the young people of Ireland

4

today. Their unwavering perseverance in pursuing their goals and working as scientists and technologists to prove theories and uncover new facts deserves the greatest admiration.Every year since 1965 students from all thirty-two counties have been bringing their projects to the Young Scientists Exhibition. The quality of their work is evident from the unrivalled record of our top young scientists in international competitions and exhibitions in Europe\eld. This year we welcome back some of our previous winners including our top award winners from last year. We know that their presence, advice and encouragement will be a great help to our young scientists in their pursuit of knowledge through scientific method.ln welcoming the young scientist 'Class Of '97', we salute them for their dedication and dynamism which have combined to make this year's Exhibition possible. We congratulate also their teachers and parents and all those

involved in the world's of education, commerce and industry who have given so freely of their time, knowledge and talents to assist and nurture the young scientists as they researched their projects. We extend a special welcome also to Apple Computer, Forfas, Dublin Zoo and The Department of Education who have all prepared special feature presentations for this year's Exhibition. Finally, a word of welcome to those of you visiting the Exhibition. I feel sure that as you walk through the halls and see the level and standard of work that has been put on display by our innovative young scientists you will be both impressed, and filled with a joint sense of pride and confidence that the future for our young people is very bright. We wish our young scientists every success.

Young Scientists are born.... the 1996 Aer Lingus Young Scientists of the Year, Elsie O'Sullivan, Rowena Mooney and Patricia Lyne pictured with An Taoiseach TO, Mr John Bruton and Aer Lingus Group Chief Executive, Gary McGann.

When we first started our work on our project "The Perfect Queen Bee", the idea of becoming Aer Lingus Young Scientists was for us an unattainable dream. We entered the Aer Lingus Young Scientist in January 1995, with our initial study on races of bees. Our project won third place in its section, and this win sowed the seeds of greater ambitions.During the year of 1995 we worked extremely hard on our project, but our hard work

knew what standards were expected. We examined other projects marvelling at their scientific content. Watching the judges as they moved from project to project we tried to forecast the winner. By Thursday afternoon we had concluded that we were not in the running and so decided to continue our project for yet another year. Friday still remains a bit of a haze in our memories. It was without doubt the best and most excit-

ing day of our lives. We could not believe that our work had been chosen as overall winner in such a prestigious competition.lt was a great honour to meet and be congratulated by our President, Mrs Robinson, the Taoiseach Mr Bruton, many Cabinet Ministers as well as Michelle Smith and our favourite television celebrities. The six o'clock news broadcast our victory to the country, and we shared our celebrations with family, friends, beekeepers and teachers who came to Dublin for the night. It was so strange for us to be the centre of everybody's attention, even signing autographs seemed weird. However, the RDS was only the start of a superb year of celebrations. Our school was overjoyed at our success and we will never forget the welcome we received on our return to school. Photographs of the three of us and details of our project won pride of place in local newspapers for weeks afterwards. The local County Councils held civic

receptions, AIB Bank and the Credit Union, our past National Schools and Beekeepers Associations all made presentations to us.The week in the

opportunity to exhibit my project at the International Science and Engineering Fair which was held in Tucson,

In fact, during the six years I studied, over one thousand earthquakes occurred there! In the course of my investigations, I discovered a very remarkable fact, that very few earthquakes occur in a large area of Scotland and part of the North Sea. After some research, I was able to suggest a model to explain this phenomenon, involving different temperatures of the crust beneath out feet. The major part of my prize was the

Arizona in May. This fair is like a huge international version of the Young Scientists Exhibition at which people from all around the world display their projects. Tucson is a relatively small city by American standards, situated in the middle of a desert south of the Grand Canyon. Attending this exhibition in the incredible situation of Tucson was a wonderful experience which I will never forget.

RDS was not all work. All the contestants were very friendly and the night life was great. The Aer Lingusstaff could not

do enough for us. Nothing seemed too much of a problem to them.

The excitement and adventures continued when we represented Ireland in the European Contest for Young Scientists in Helsinki, Finland. We had a wonderful time and were delighted to win third place and to be nominated to go forward to the 48th International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Louisville, Kentucky, USA in May 1997.

Proudly displaying his 1996 Best Individual perpetual trophy.

Last January I entered the Aer Lingus Young Scientists Exhibition for the second time. I knew I would have a brilliant week, but I little expected just what was in store for me! I won the Best Individual award, which meant I got to talk to all of the most important visitors to the exhibition, as well as the opportunity to display my project at the International Science and Engineering Fair, which is held every year in

In addition to the title of runners up, we were also presented with the Best Display Award and a special award from The Statistical Committee of Ireland for our use of statistics in our project. Our 14 months of hard work, preparation and dedication had eventually but definitely paid off. When we were called on stage to receive

celebrities including the President Mary Robinson, the Taoiseach John Bruton, Michelle Smith, Gerry Ryan, Ray Darcy, Pat Kenny and Ryle Nugent, not to mention the many other politicians who offered their congratulations. The judges who examined our project and all the other projects in the RDS with great interest and precision (even down to finding spelling mistakes), were especially encouraging and among the first to offer their congratulations. The

organisation and dedication of all associated with Aer Lingus especially Group Chief Executive Gary McCann and Jackie Mahon, was a credit to them. From the daily running to the evening activities for competitors and especially the opening and closing ceremonies (not to forget our little back stage party with Pat Kenny), the exhibition could not have been better.Part of

Winning a first prize at the Young European Environmental research (PEER) Germany was certainly beyond my wildest dreams. The fact that I was representing my country was a huge honour in itself and something for which I was very proud. Winning was the icing on the cake!l first touched down on German soil zest November. Fellow young researchers were also arriving at Bremen airport from every corner of Europe. After being guided to our hotel, my escort, Gerard Hughes and I walked to the i5th Century City Hall in the heart of Bremen. This

ideal setting for what is becoming a very prestigious event in the international scientific calendar. The opening ceremony was scheduled for Thursday evening. A total of 91 contestants from 35 countries provided a very international feel as we posed, flags in hand, for the group photo! That evening the contestants and escorts got to intermingle before a comparatively early night. The next morning everyone was up bright and early, eager to make a good impression on the members of the international jury. The majority of the next two days was occupied by judging. Time was taken however, to explore the

exciting historic city of Bremen. Evening activities were organised by the 'PEER Team' and were accepted as opportunities to relax and get to know as many new people

announcement of my win was overwhelming and came as a complete shock! Representing Europe at the International Science and Engineering Fair in Kentucky USA?!! ME!It took a while to sink in. The reception from fellow competitors, escorts and judges alike was terrific. This win crowned what had already been a brilliant few days. I look forward to travelling to the International Science Fair in America, proud to be carrying the flag for Ireland and indeed for Europe.

as possible. On Sunday morning we prepared for the Prize Award Ceremony. Everyone was giving their different opinions as to who would be the winner, personally I found it impossible to decide! All contestants assembled on the stage and the prizes were awarded. Soon all that remained were the two first prizes. At this stage I was resigned to the fact that I would not be a winner, so as you can imagine the

Triona O'Boyle St. Mary's Secondary School, Mallow, Co.Cork. Winner of the Roche Youth Prize Award held in Basle, Switzerland. My week at the Aer Lingus Young Scientists Exhibition 1996 was an experience I will never forget. For it was there I made so many new friends and met so many different people. I could never begin to describe how I felt when I discovered that my very own project "Pseudomonas Colonization in Cystic Fibrosis" had won the Roche Youth Prize for 1996. It all seemed so unbelievable. My prize, a week long trip to Switzerland was presented to me by Michelle Smith. I also got the opportunity to meet with our President, Mary Robinson, yet another moment I will never forget.ln July of last year, I flew to Basle in Northern Switzerland to participate in the "Roche Youth Science Seminar 1996". Roche, the research-based

company in healthcare, as part of its centenary celebrations were holding this event and were offering one place each to countries worldwide where the company has bases. Twelve other young scientists from countries all over the world, including Singapore and Indonesia, came together for a week of lectures, visits to research bases and cultural events. On the Sunday, we journeyed to Lucerne and saw snow at 240c from a cable-car. It was really quite amazing. On our final day we had the opportunity to present our own scientific research. It was rather like a miniature version of the Young Scientists Exhibition. Needless to say, many close friendships developed over that week in July, and I now have twelve new penfriends from all over the world.) know that my experience as an Aer Lingus Young Scientist will always stay with me. I hope the Exhibition continues to be a great success and I wish the very best for the

future. Thank-you Aer Lingus!

Siobhain Sims Winner of the 7th International Wild Animal Research Week in the Swiss Alps. Last year, I won the trip to Switzerland to represent Ireland at the Nature Research Centre. I was there for a week and took part in research carried out with the twenty-two other students from all over Europe. We were split into five different groups and given topics in the biology area. My group studied patterns of flowers surrounding Dryus Octopetala (Mountain Aven). This was very interesting as the flowers in Switzerland are similar to the flowers in the Burren (area I reasearched for last year's project). I really enjoyed my week in Switzerland, especially meeting new people and friends. I also have invitations to all parts of Europe which is a great opportunity to travel. When I arrived in Switzerland it took me a while to figure out the transport system but I

soon made it to the hostel with the help from locals and a very nice Japanese guy! The one thing I wish I had done was to learn more German. No matter what anyone says, they don't all speak English. Also I would have rather been at least eighteen years old as everyone else in the group was 18 - zlyrs and I felt a little left out but otherwise it was a great experience. The group leaders were particularly great and took care of me even when I came down ill. It was a bit nerve wrecking being in a

I must say the villa was brilliant and always made sure everyone was happy. Though, having breakfast at 6.30am and lunch at o9.3oam took me a while to get used to, all the same I never went hungry. I wish "Good Luck" to whoever wins the trip this year.

The food at the Villa Cassel was delicious and they are willing to cater for vegetarians or people with food allergies. Be warned, the food is very different to Irish food so be prepared to try different foods and their special cheese dish is delicious.lt took a lot of hard work with the project and it
