A Message from Bill Murphy CEO, Esat BT. Welcome to the Esat BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition 2003, the 39th year of the event, the 6th year it has been funded and organised by Esat and the first under the Esat BT brand name. The interest in this year's competition has reached an all time high, with an incredible 910 projects submitted from across Ireland. From these entries 480 projects have been selected by a panel of judges to appear in the finals. The students involved in these projects should be justifiably proud in getting so far, as it is a huge achievement this year just to be at the RDS this week. The Esat BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition is a showcase for Ireland's young people, providing them with and opportunity to demonstrate innovation, talent, creativity and enterprise. It also plays a more serious role by encouraging and developing the scientists and technologists of tomorrow which is of vital importance to the economic future and prosperity of this island. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all participating students the very best of luck with their projects and I am sure they would join with me in thanking both their teachers and parents alike for the encouragement and support that they have given. I hope that you all enjoy your experiences here throughout the week. From the student projects to the World of Science and Technology and not

forgetting the World of Robots, we believe that there is something to interest everyone at the Esat BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition 2003.

Professor Noel Sharkey builds genuine robots that think for themselves, learning from their decision and reacting to one another in an electronic community. His latest creation is a fleet of flying robots he calls Flyborg. Each Flyborg has several types of sensors. They use sonars (like bats) to detect obstacles and other Flyborg. They use gyroscopes and accelerometers for control and infrared detectors to recognise and possibly follow each other. Each Flyborg has three propellors which turn independently to steer. They are battery powered and use helium gas for buoyancy just like conventional airships. Four metres long and 1.7 metres tall, Professor Sharkey estimates that they cost almost EUR16 000 each to build.

The 'World of Robots' proved such a success last year that we had to bring it back - but this time bigger and better!
Making its first public appearance ever is the 'Robots of Destruction ' arena. This custom-built, octagonal shaped arena, will offer a great view of some of the stars from Robot Wars in action, behind the safety of its polycarbonate walls. Hosting in the arena will be Dublin's very own Diotoir, instantly recognisable with its red fun fur with large black dots. Diotoir has appeared in series 3, 4 and 5 of Robot Wars plus Robot Wars Extreme 1 and 2 and the World Championships 1 and 2. A former 'tag team' winner and runner-up in the 1st World Championships Diotoir has received the sportsmanship award on three different occasions. a Appearing at Young Scientist for the first time is Panic Attack the Robot Wars series 2 Champion, Chaos 2 a two times Champion of Robot Wars, King B ( series 2,3,4,5 and Extreme) and winner of 'Tag Team Terror Championship' for series 4 and Draven, a very powerful robot with a 4tonne titanium hydraulic jaw/lifter, six wheel drive and carbon-fibre/Kevflar chassis.
