Continued focus is needed on developing Ireland as a knowledge economy. We believe that our investment in, and commitment to, this exhibition encourages schools throughout the island to have a passion and interest in those very skills that will help Ireland advance and thrive. The success of the event endorses our investment and commitment. A record number of projects were entered this year from 31 counties across Ireland. And previous winners have gone on to enjoy success at a European level with BT Young Scientist of the Year 2007, Abdul Abubakar, winning First Prize in Mathematics at the 19th European Union Contest for Young Scientists in Valencia, Spain last September. It is also gratifying to note that, under BT's stewardship, the volume of projects entered into the Young Scientist competition has almost doubled over the past six years. This is even more remarkable if we consider that the number of students taking science subjects at second level has declined during the same period.

There are a number of people I would like to acknowledge, for without their input there would be no Young Scientist.

Ar an gcead dul sios ba mhaith liom buiochas a ghabhail leis na m6inteoiri a thugann an oiread sin spreagtha agus c6naimh do na daltai oga. Chomh maith leo si6d, ba mhaith liom buiochas a ghabhail leis na mic leinn iad fain as ucht a ndiograis agus as ucht a bhfiosracht ar an saol mor-thimpeall orthu, agus ni feidir dearmad a dheanamh ar na tuismitheoiri a thugann cabhair agus misneach doibh i gconai.

Firstly, I would like to thank the teachers for their positive support which provides the necessary motivation to stimulate young minds. Next, my thanks to the students themselves for their enthusiasm, drive and questioning of the world around them and also to their parents and guardians for giving that all important encouragement.

Ar deireadh, cuimhnimis ar na breithimh a d'oibrigh chomh than sin thar na blianta, agus is da bharr si6d a thainig rath ar an gcomortas le 44 bhliain anuas. Ta na breithimh neamhspleach go h-iomlan agus tagann said o reimse leathan d'institiuidi leinn agus on earnail tionscail ar fud na tire. Gabhaim buiochas leo go lair mar go gcuireann said a gcuid ama agus a gcuid ndiograis ar fail d6inn go flaithi6il.

Lastly, we should not forget our judges, as their work has helped the competition survive and flourish for 44 years. The judging panel acts completely independently and is drawn from academia and industry across Ireland. I thank them all most sincerely for their dedication and for giving their time so generously.

Ba mhaith liom mo bhuiochas a ghabhail leis an Aire, Mary Hanafin agus a comhghlachaithe sa Roinn Oideachais agus Eolaiochta, agus in a dteanta sin, na h-urraithe eile agus gach einne ata bainteach leis an taispeantas. Is buaiteoiri iad uile na mic leinn ata ag leiriu a gcuid tograi anseo san RDS an tseachtain seo, agus gabhaim comhgairdeachas leo go lair go bhfuil said cailithe don bhabhta cheannais. Gach rath oraibh anois agus amach anseo sa todhcai.

I would also like to thank Minister Mary Hanafin and her colleagues at the Department of Education and Science, plus all of our co-sponsors and exhibitors for their support. The students who are showcasing their projects this week in t R.D.S. are already winners. I would like to congratulate them making it through to the finals here in the R.D.S. I wish you e

Winners of the intel Student Award at the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition receive an all expenses trip to the USA to represent Ireland at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). This is a fabulous opportunity to network and create friendships with other young people from all over the world. Ardit Kroni won the Intel Student Award in 2007 and can be seen here with his teacher Jim Cooke, representing Ireland at the Intel ISEF in Phoenix, Arizona.

This Student award is presented to an Individual or Group for outstanding work exhibited in the Technology category. The prize consists of a trophy plus an all expenses paid trip to America, visiting the Analog Devices Headquarters in Boston and our plant in San Francisco as the guest(s) of Analog Devices. During this trip, students have the opportunity to visit third level institutes at the cutting edge of technological research and sample the diversity of American culture. Finally, Analog Devices will donate â‚Ź2500 to the winning student(s) school, towards its science laboratory equipment fund. Through education programmes such as the Intel ISEF, intel works to inspire and educate children in communities around the world in the areas of science, mathematics and engineering.

January. In their project, entitled 'Moto Xtra Safe' they developed a unique design that aided the safety of anyone driving a quad bike. The students had carried out research into the cause of accidents from the riding of quad bikes, a popular activity in their area. From their research, three principle reasons of serious injury from quad bike accidents were identified, namely driving without a helmet; pillion passengers falling from rear of bike; and bike continuing to run after a rider had fallen from bike in an accident resulting in rider being rolled over. The project then provided safety measures to prevent these types of accidents from happening.

Analog Devices also recognises the dedication and hard work of the educator through its sponsorship of the Analog Devices Educator of Excellence Award. This award is presented to the teacher whose commitment and encouragement has consistently enables their students to participate successfully in the technology section at the exhibition . The winner will receive the Analog Devices Trophy plus an all expenses paid trip to America Ms. Lisa Kiely from Castletroy College, Castletroy, Co. Limerick took the award in 2007. in December. Enter a world of swirling whirlwinds and giant smoke rings. Less explanation; more exploration. Visualise the beauty of science is a mischievous mix of live science demonstrations, physical theatre, projected images-and music. See ordinary objects behaving in extraordinary ways, as the laws of nature are captured, explored and pushed to the. limit to create a unique visual spectacle.

How not to set your violin on fire! presented by Pluck

Almost 100 projects will be on show from Primary Schools across the country over the three days of the Exhibition. The Fair reflects the broad and balanced primary science curriculum and this years participants have been encouraged to think about safety as it relates to their projects. The initiative forms part of a wider strategy which is targeting safety programmes at younger workers and workers of the future.

Three of the most silly (but talented) musicians in the world, Pluck, present a hilarious show about music, energy and the history of audio equipment

For the first time prizes will be awarded to the top students and teachers on a daily basis. A Special Primary Science Awards Ceremony will take place in the BT Arena at 1.30p. m. and will be preceded with a science show from W5.

The merits of the wind up record player, the car battery powered 8-track cartridge player, the battery powered walkman and USB powered iPod are discussed in detail to humorous effect. But when the trio breaks into Purple Haze by Jimi Hendrix, it's 'holy smoke' for the violin'!

The Air Corps currently operate twenty fixed wing aircraft and nine rotary wing aircraft with an additional two Agusta Westland 139 helicopters on order, scheduled for delivery in mid 2008.
