Bainisteoir Ginearalta
Implicit in our wish to encourage young people to take a greater interest in science is the hope that more and more of them will adopt it as a career and so give Ireland the biologists, chemists, geographers, mathematicians, physicists and other scientists that she will most certainly need in the future. In this context, the winning of awards must be of less importance than the knowledge and experience that exhibitors gain in the course of preparing their projects. This holds good equally for those who win prizes and for those who do not. In any event, there can be no winners without losers and frequently the difference between the two is very small. So, when this year's winners are being deservedly congratulated, the unsuccessful competitors may also and justly share in the plaudits. Prizes amounting to ÂŁ1,150 will be available to forty-five competitors in this year's Young Scientists' Exhibition. Other competitors, whose work is deemed to be sufficiently meritorious, will receive certificates of commendation. It will be agreed that the awards are generous, in particular those that are to be won by the Young Scientist of the Year and by the boy and girl who prove to be runners-up. However valuable an award may be in the monetary sense, it is a reward of far smaller importance than the satisfaction which a competitor must derive from the successful accomplishment of a difficult task. For many of our judges this will be the fourth successive occasion on which they have been asked to discharge an onerous and difficult task. To all members of this distinguished panel, we wish to express our gratitude for their help so readily given as well as our appreciation of the honour they do us in consenting to act in this capacity. We wish to say a special word of thanks to competitors who, despite the set-back caused by the unavoidable postponement of the Exhibition, have shown such commendable perseverance in presenting their projects.
