Blessed Trinity Catholic High School

School Acclamation God the Father: Enlighten our minds God the Son: Transform our hearts God the Holy Spirit: Inspire our works May the Blessed Trinity be praised: Now and forever!

From the Principal

Dear Friends of Blessed Trinity: Another wonderful year has passed, and we have sent the 227 members of the Class of 2012 off to college, having made their final decisions from the 981 college acceptances they received from 194 different colleges throughout the United States and Australia. Those students earned $14.9 million of scholarship offers as well; quite a tribute to the graduates, their parents, and the guidance counselors. We are constantly looking for ways to keep our facility fresh and up to date, and your support of the Annual Fund is a huge help in achieving those goals. Technology in the building is always on a three-year replacement cycle, and we have just completed a project to dramatically expand our wireless capabilities, as more students are accessing our network with their personal technology. Expansion of the school store, installation of high-efficiency lighting, and carpet replacement have all been made possible in part through your generous donations to the school. We are now entering year two of our four-year “This is Our Moment” Capital Campaign. We are close to “turning dirt” for the installation of artificial turf on three playing fields, a project that will save the school tens of thousands of dollars a year on field maintenance and generate income from the local club teams that have wanted for years to rent our fields. We hope that shortly after that, we can start construction of the Fine Arts Annex, the locker/restroom building near the tennis courts, and the gym expansion. Enjoy this report. See how you have helped take Blessed Trinity to a level only dreamed of a few years ago. If your name does not appear on our donor list, please prayerfully consider a tax-deductible donation to the Annual Fund and Capital Campaign. To use an oft-quoted phrase: Your support of the Annual Fund helps the school to GO, and your support of the Capital Campaign helps the school to GROW! Our students deserve all that we can do for them. God bless you for all you do for Blessed Trinity Catholic High School. Yours in Christ, Frank Moore Principal

From the Development Director

Dear Blessed Trinity Supporters: What an exciting time to be a BT Titan! During the 2011-2012 school year, Blessed Trinity launched the “This Is Our Moment Capital Campaign to fund much-needed major facility improvements. These improvements represent the largest expansion of this kind since the school opened in 2000. The campaign is a four-year campaign, and in year one over $2.2 million dollars were pledged - representing over 40% of the four-year goal. For a school the age of BT and with limited alumni support, this was quite an undertaking, and our success so far reflects the generosity of all our families. When a young school takes on a campaign of this magnitude, one of the concerns is what it will do to the support we receive for our Annual Fund. I am happy to report that the number of gifts to the Annual Fund increased from 499 in 2011 to 528 in 2012. The financial results of both are outlined in the financial section of this report. Thanks to everyone who supported both of these initiatives this past year. Participation is the key word for the upcoming year. We need the support of all our families in order to continue to make BT one of the premier high schools in the Atlanta area. If you did not participate in the Annual Fund or Capital Campaigns last year, we ask that you prayerfully consider supporting both in the upcoming school year. The 12th Annual Auction Gala was the most successful ever. Under the leadership of Chris Jasinski and Karen Reyhan and all of their volunteers, the event was sold out and set the bar high for future auctions. Thanks to all who participated as sponsors, volunteers and attendees. Finally, I want to thank all the parent volunteers. Whether you served on a board, coached, provided food, worked a concession stand or ticket gate, your contribution to the overall success of Blessed Trinity was very much needed and appreciated. Once again, thank you to all of our supporters for everything you did to make 2011-2012 such a successful year. Sincerely, Chuck Oliver

Director of Development

Father Augustine Tran... on a Catholic Education The word education comes from the Latin “e ducere”which means “to be led out of.” Hence, to be educated is to have been led out of the darkness of our ignorance into the light of truth and beauty. God is the One, the True, the Good, and the Beautiful. This is why God is integrated into every aspect of a Catholic education.

There is no “religion wing” in a Catholic school, because the Catholic faith permeates every inch of that school. Every teacher is a religion teacher. Because one cannot understand the universe without understanding its author, the Catholic tradition has handed down this wisdom to the school systems.

Plato, the father of Western philosophy, said that an education should save the soul and enlarge the mind. One can have one’s mind enlarged at any school, but the primary purpose of a Catholic school is to save the soul. Our purpose is to help get our students into Heaven, not Harvard. These things are not mutually exclusive. One can and does get a great academic education at a Catholic school, but that education is pointless if we have not saved the soul.

Faith is not just giving lip service to a belief, but putting our money where our mouth is. Faith requires a response. It is not just that one-hour we give to God on Sundays, but rather it permeates every aspect of our life, every decision that we make from the mundane (What movie should we watch tonight?) to the sublime (Should I marry this man?). Our response to the gift of faith, i.e., our actions, is what molds us and forms our character. The parents of our students understand this well, which is why they chose a Catholic school for their children.

The world in which we live is filled with temptations to choose pleasure over happiness. In fact, the advertising industry is based upon blurring this distinction between pleasure and happiness. Once we realize that pleasure does not always lead to happiness, once we realize that our home and our happiness are in Heaven, then, we shall ask ourselves before every conscious choice, before every human act, “Would this bring me closer to Heaven?” These are the questions students learn to ask in a Catholic school so that they may enlarge their minds and save their souls.

4

“Education is integral to the mission of the church to proclaim the Good News. Pope Benedict XVI

5

“Our Catholic schools are a living witness to the unity we have in Jesus. We celebrate the legacy of Catholic school education and embrace a future with great expectation for the future leaders of our Church emerging from our Catholic schools. Most Reverand Wilton D. Gregory, Archbishop of Atlanta

GRACE Scholars Program Blessed Trinity Catholic High School participates in the G.R.A.C.E. Scholars program, a state-approved Student Scholarship Organization (SSO) established by the Archdiocese of Atlanta. In 2008, the state of Georgia passed legislation which allows Georgia residents to re-direct a portion of their state income taxes to a private school of their choice for use in providing financial aid to students coming from public schools. The students must qualify for the financial aid based on need. Last year, 221 participants in the G.R.A.C.E. program selected Blessed Trinity as the recipient of their funds. As a result, Blessed Trinity received over $350,000 and was able to provide financial aid to eighteen new students who otherwise might not have been able to afford a quality Catholic education. These students will continue to receive financial aid for the next four years provided they continue to qualify. This year, Blessed Trinity was able to fully fund the financial needs of 100% of the students coming from public schools who qualified for financial aid through G.R.A.C.E. Because these funds came from G.R.A.C.E., it allowed regularly budgeted financial aid dollars to go farther in supporting the financial needs of the students coming from our Catholic feeder schools and other private schools. We want to thank the following families who chose to participate in the G.R.A.C.E. Scholars program and hope that they continue to choose G.R.A.C.E. as part of their tax planning strategy for years to come.

While GRACE participation addresses the school’s critical need for targeted financial aid funding, it should not be considered a donation. It is, rather, a re-direction of tax monies already owed to the state. We continue to be grateful for your much-needed contributions to the school’s Annual Fund as they help us meet overall budgetary obligations.

For further information or if you have questions relating to the G.R.A.C.E. Scholars program, please contact Chuck Oliver at 770-255-5125 or coliver@btcatholic.org

Capital Campaign Donors Last year, BT launched the “This Is Our Moment” Capital Campaign to raise funds for major capital improvements at the school. This will be the first major facility expansion since the school opened in 2000. Each year, funds from the Annual Fund drive are used to make improvements to the school but now the enhancements which are needed are just too large to accomplish without a dedicated fundraising effort. During the first stage of the campaign, over $2.2 million dollars were pledged, which is 40% of the overall goal of $5.6 million. We want to say Thank You to all the families who made pledges to the campaign and helped to get this effort off the ground. Anonymous (2) Mr. and Mrs. Daniel P. “...and that in the present order of Providence, since God has revealed Himself to us in the Person of His Only Begotten Son, who alone is “the way, the truth and the life,” there can be no ideally perfect education which is not Christian education. “ Pope Pius XI

Ways To Give Each and every gift that is given to Blessed Trinity Catholic High School, regardless of the amount, holds an immeasurable level of importance to the school. All gifts are tax-deductible as allowed by law. Careful planning of your gift can not only help to maximize the gift that you make to the school, but also your personal goals as well. Legal and financial advisors can best help you determine the type of gift most advantageous and appropriate for you to make. There are several opportunities for faculty and staff, alumni, parents, and friends to financially support our school. ANNUAL FUND - The Annual Fund is the most important fundraising effort each school year. At BT, tuition revenues cover the basic operations of the school. Additional requested budget items can only be funded through a successful Annual Fund campaign. Each year, there is a gap between revenues from tuition and the amount needed to fund the entire school budget. Our goal is to have 100% participation in the Annual Fund from our faculty, staff and parent community, regardless of the amount you are able to contribute. Please help to increase our overall participation rate by making a contribution. AUCTION & GALA - The Annual Auction & Gala, held in March, is the single-largest fundraising event for the school. In order to have a successful Auction & Gala, we need volunteers, donated items, sponsorships and attendees. To learn more on getting involved in the Auction, please contact the Development office. FINE ARTS ASSOCIATION - Different levels of membership are available for the BT Fine Arts Association. Each membership has its own set of benefits, including tickets and apparel. All proceeds help pay the expenses for the school’s arts program. ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION - Different levels of membership are available for the BT Athletic Association. Each membership has its own set of benefits, including tickets and apparel. All proceeds help pay the expenses of the school’s athletic program. FUNDRAISING PROGRAMS & EVENTS - The Development Office raises additional funds for the school through partnering with select merchants, the BT Fine Arts Association, and the BT Athletic Association. SCHOLARSHIPS & ENDOWMENTS - The school has several endowed scholarships, awards, and funds. Only the interest of these gifts is awarded each year. With the principal’s approval, donors may contribute any amount to an existing endowment, or endow a scholarship of their own with a minimum gift of $20,000.

There are many different methods that donors may choose to fund their gift: Monetary - Your gifts provide immediate tax savings through deductions and provides the school with funds for current use. Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express are all accepted. Securities - Some donors choose to transfer stock to BT as their gift each year. Contact the Development Office to make these arrangements. Matching Gifts - A matching gift is when an employer will match the charitable contribution made by an employee or the spouse of an employee. This can multiply your gift to the school by simply completing the appropriate form from your company. Check with your Human Resources Department about their matching gifts policies and procedures. Gifts in Kind - These non-cash gifts include items that the school needs and uses including, but not limited to, furniture, office supplies, or printing services. Planned Gifts - The most common planned gift is when a donor leaves a gift to the school as part of a will. Other planned gifts include life insurance, charitable remainder trusts, and annuity trusts. Establish a Scholarship or Endowment - The school has six endowed scholarships: Goizueta Foundation, Robert White/ UPS, Jessica Turner Memorial, Kevin Mann Memorial, Devon McKniff Memorial, and the Elizabeth Huffner Memorial Scholarship. Donors may endow a scholarship of their own for a minimum gift of $20,000.
