BTC Egypt’s leading watch retailer’s interview in

Europa Star Magazine Talking About Brand Boutiques

PROS AND CONS Watch brands of all sizes continue to open up monobrand boutiques around the world. Europa Star investigates this trend and talks to opinion leaders on both sides of the issue.

Ayman Nassif, president, BTC (Egypt): “PR plays an enormous role in proliferation of the brand. A brand boutique creates the brand personality, mystique and emotional values. I think in the short term, sales may decrease in retailers’ shops, that’s why for retailers to remain in competition, they must buy large quantities to maintain their margins and to always have stock like the boutique. The independent retailers benefit from the advertising and PR that the boutiques do for the brand. “It can still help to carry a brand that has its own boutique. For example, here in Egypt, we have a Tissot monobrand boutique and next to it our retail shop BTC, which carries Tissot, and in front is another retail shop that carries Tissot as well. We all sell well. “An independent retailer can make offers and discounts on the prices of watches which will attract the customer, or to do some offers or liquidation in order to finish old stock. But in a boutique there are rules that you have to follow. Tissot Boutique, Sun Stars Mall, Egypt “Independent retailers have a lot of choices for customers, but for the boutique if customers don’t find what they want they won’t buy anything. “I believe that big brand watches will only be available in their own boutiques in the future.”

Master Ultra Thin Perpetual Prodigious slimness

the production of ultra-thin watches. Their encounter marked the start of a fruitful collaboration that would culminate several decades later in joining their names for posterity. It gave rise in 1907 to the introduction of the Calibre 145 pocket-watch movement meeting Parisian designers’ wish for discretion and refinement. Its stupendous 1.38 mm slenderness earned it the title of the world’s thinnest watch movement, a record it still holds in its category. Produced for half a century, it nurtured the tradition of ultra-thin Haute Horlogerie watches that Jaeger-LeCoultre still cultivates today. The history of these minimalist timepieces was soon enriched with complications, such as Calibre18/19RMCCVEP, a pocket movement comprising a chronograph and a minute repeater while measuring just 3.55 mm thick. In 1976, when quartz was shaking the very foundations of Swiss watch watchmaking, the Grande Maison in the Vallée de Joux boldly developed a high-frequency ultra-thin movement with date display and measuring a mere 3.25 mm. Named Calibre 900, it paved the way for the automatic movements equipping the models of the Master Ultra Thin line and distinguished by their exceptional reliability and sturdiness.

Smooth handling now and always

The understated beauty of the Master Ultra Thin watch collection is a magnet for devotees and connoisseurs. These aesthetes view the formal and mechanical purity of a timepiece as embodying the very essence of horology. Nonetheless, producing ultra-thin calibres represents a major technical challenge that is all the more daunting when these movements comprise additional complications. In this particular field, Jaeger-LeCoultre fulfils a long-cherished dream of brand aficionados by unveiling its first ultra-thin automatic perpetual calendar watch. The watchmakers and designers of the Manufacture have united their endeavors in creating an extremely slim mechanism equipped with a complete calendar, and in arranging the entire set of indications on a dial that retains the collection’s minimalist elegance while ensuring perfect readability. The successful result definitely lives up to expectations and the new Master Ultra Thin Perpetual watch is already taking centre stage in its pink gold, white gold and steel versions.

Aesthetic and mechanical purity A single glance is enough to confirm that the new Master Ultra Thin Perpetual watch belongs to a prestigious lineage. It features the same pure design combining classical elements with the aesthetic inspiration of the Grande Maison. The clear and self-evident layout avoids any risk of confusion. In addition to the hour, minute and central seconds hands, it comprises three counters dedicated to the perpetual calendar displays: the first at 9 o’clock for the day of the week; the second at 3 o’clock for the date; and the third at 6 o’clock for the month. Jaeger-

LeCoultre’s distinctive signature appears below the moon phase. In addition to this comprehensive range of information, a perpetual calendar function must also indicate the current year, and on the Master Ultra Thin Perpetual, a full four-digit display appears through a small aperture at 7 o’clock. In this paragon of visual equilibrium and absolute harmony, that which is clearly thought out is clearly expressed – a precept admirably confirmed by a careful scrutiny of the Master Ultra Thin Perpetual. The new model comes in three variations distinguished by the material or color of the case. The first features an 18-carat pink gold case framing an eggshell-white dial, while the 18-carat white gold version comes with a grained silver-toned dial. Finally, the steel model available exclusively from Jaeger-LeCoultre boutiques is graced with a sunburst silver-toned dial. Whatever its color, the case with its comfortable 39 mm diameter will be first and foremost examined sideways by connoisseurs and collections. While they will note the streamlined lugs and the slim bezel endowing this watch with a peculiar grace, their attention will doubtless focus on the amazingly diminutive 9.2 mm thickness – a new tour de force designed to house Calibre 868, the Manufacture’s ultra-thin automatic perpetual calendar movement.

A single corrector located on the side of the case is enough to change all the indications in accordance with a remarkably simple principle: one press moves the perpetual calendar one day forwards, while any additional changes required to keep step with the vagaries of the Gregorian calendar take place automatically. The watch mechanism is so sophisticated that it takes account of the unequal length of months with 28, 30 or 31 days. Every four years, it will just as naturally display the 29th of February that is associated with leap years. It will thus require no manual adjustment before March 1st 2100, since century years are an exception to the four-year cycle governing leap years. Meanwhile, the moonphase display will faithfully portray the various states of our satellite over the next 122 years. Finally, just above the dial centre, a small rectangular window, generally in the same shade as the background, turns gradually red as evening falls. It indicates the period during which it is preferable to avoid any adjustments in order to avoid potentially damaging the gear wheels that are already engaged in preparing the change of indication that takes place daily at exactly midnight. Nonetheless, well before the alarm awakens its owner at the dawn of a new day, the opening will have regained its usual shade and melted seamlessly into the dial background.

Ultra-thin calibres and perpetual calendars from Jaeger-LeCoultre In the early 20th century, Jacques-David LeCoultre took up the challenge presented to Swiss watch manufacturers by the French industrialist Edmond Jaeger, who wished to develop

Marine Chronometer Manufacture Ulysse Nardin defies time by extending its iconic collection of marine watches with a timepiece powered by Caliber UN-118, a technological gem In the 19th century, to protect its marine chronometers from the corrosive effect of the salty sea air and to overcome the technical challenges of a floor in constant motion, Ulysse Nardin decided to invest in time. The treasures of audacity and ingenuity it deployed have endured over the centuries. Today, Ulysse Nardin Manufacture not only pays homage to this spirit of innovation and independence that prevailed over its creation, but celebrates it with pride, perpetuating the legend. And so, the new Marine Chronometer Manufacture is the latest addition to the Ulysse Nardin collection of marine watches. Its Caliber UN-118, manufactured entirely in-house with its beating heart of silicon and DIAMonSIL, reminds us that traditional knowhow and confident inventiveness reflects the ideology of Ulysse Nardin: to ensure its creations have the touch of eternity they deserve. The cornerstone in the brand’s development and the key to its

independence, this self-winding caliber is a real technological gem, and offers hours, minutes and direct-drive small seconds, a power reserve indicator at 12 o’clock and the date at 6 o’clock. Able to run autonomously for 60 hours, the Marine Chronometer Manufacture has a date that can be adjusted either backward or forward, and it also benefits from the Ulysse Nardin Certificate. Based on COSC tests of the performance of the movement alone, the Ulysse Nardin Certificate goes further by rigorously checking the quality and craftsmanship of the watch as a whole. Available in 18 ct. rose gold or in stainless steel, the Marine Chronometer Manufacture bears the classic hallmarks of marine instruments: a generous case with a 43 mm diameter for excellent readability, a fluted bezel, solid lugs to ensure excellent stability on the wrist and a screw-locked crown guaranteeing complete water resistance to a depth of 100 meters, as well as a rubber finish for perfect handling. Displaying Arabic numerals, the dial is available in a choice of black, blue or silver. The timepiece comes mounted on either an alligator or rubber strap, or a 18 ct. gold, stainless steel bracelet.

Introducing the Black Toro Ulysse Nardin Launches the Industry’s Best Perpetual Calendar Timepiece to Date For centuries, perpetual calendar timepieces have existed. Yet it was in 1996 that Ulysse Nardin brought to market the world’s most functional perpetual calendar. Created by the master of watch innovation, Ludwig Oechslin, the timepiece, named the Perpetual Ludwig, marked a major milestone in watchmaking history. It allowed the forward and backward adjustment of all calendar displays over a single crown, eliminating the need to return the watch to the manufacturer in case of setting mistakes. Unlike the standard lever system, the timepiece revealed the very first perpetual calendar mechanism driven by wheels and gears. An icon of sheer watchmaking perfection, the movement has appeared in Ulysse Nardin’s most significant timepieces, including the GMT+/Perpetual with dual-time function, the mighty El Toro, and now, the Black Toro. Industry-wide, the 2013 launch of the Black Toro represents the best perpetual calendar timepiece developed to date. Stunning in 18-karat rose gold with its black dial and ceramic bezel, it offers the simplest setting capability of the calendar functions. The Black Toro is a stellar representation of Ulysse Nardin’s unrivaled ability to create technically innovative timepieces of great design, and superior function, precision and ease of use, while continuing the legacy of its most important inventions.

BOVET 1822 and Artists for Peace and Justice Festival Lunch

Pascal Raffy By Marco Cattaneo (Tribune des Arts)

On the table in front of him, the assorted papers, pens, files and documents are carefully aligned and spread around the arc of a circle, with each object placed at the exact same distance from its neighbors and thus forming a set of rigorously identical angles. There is simply no room for luck or chance in the vicinity of Pascal Raffy, and even less so for disorder. Within this perfectly controlled environment, it is thus almost astonishing to see the smoke rising from his cigar in random twirls. One would almost like it to follow the rules of the place just as everything else does, floating upward at successive right angles. “How can you expect to assemble a beautiful movement, if you aren’t obsessed by details?” says Pascal Raffy. He has short-cropped hair and bright eyes that shine with a special sparkle when he speaks of his three children, or of a particular dream watch. This is a man who resembles his timepieces, driven by a concern for details, by an obsession with perfect finishing and rigorous demands, but also by a form of harmony, of exuberance and of controlled passion. He loves genuine luxury and displays a different preference for haute couture over off-the-peg wear, and for small series rather than mass production. He is in complete symbiosis with Bovet, the company he took over in 2001 and of which he is steadily rebuilding the heritage, brick by brick. He has revived the collections, passionately creating complicated models and one-of-a-kind dials adorned with miniatures painted on enamel or mother-of-pearl. He has restored it to its rightful status as an authentic manufacture by buying up the company that supplied its complications and which he has christened Dimier 1738. He has even given it an historical heart by installing part of its activities in the Château de Môtiers of which he became the proud owner in 2007. He was still a child when he first discovered Switzerland, after leaving Beirut where he was born 13 years earlier in the summer of 1963. His family, which originally hailed from the French Ardennes region, had been established in the “garden city” for two generations, but the war put an end to this Lebanese episode. The Raffys, or “Raffins” as they were still called in the 17th century, travelled to Switzerland to join a family member in Sion. They only stayed for one year before setting off for Paris, where Pascal Raffy learned lessons in both independence and law during his university studies there. The 18 year-old was determined to cope on his own and rented a studio in the Saint-German-des-Prés district: a 15 square-metre kingdom on the 7th floor of a building with no elevator on the Rue des Saint-Pères. He studied by day and worked at a pizzeria by night, where he served tables while signing classic Italian songs and leading Japanese, American and German tourists in rousing and heavily accented choruses

of “O sole mio”. It was in Paris that he met his wife and decided to follow in his in-laws’ footsteps in the pharmaceutical industry. “I ran a medium-sized laboratory”, he recalls, but after around ten years he decided to give up his career to devote more time to his children. The youthful (38 year-old!) “pensioner” settled in Givrins, a charming village in Canton of Vaud overlooking Lake Léman. Why Switzerland? “We are rootless”, explains Pascal Raffy. “I returned to Beirut in 1994, but the city had changed too much and I couldn’t live there any more. It was in Switzerland that I wished to set up home”, driven among other factors by the memory of having fallen under the spell of the tiny village of Vernamiège, perched around 15 kilometres above Sion. This relocation took place in the early 2000s, and his banker presented him with several opportunities, including various watch companies looking for investors. He was fascinated by this field, and remembers that “as children already, we enjoyed weekly Sunday master classes in fine watchmaking, taught by my grandfather André”. And as soon as his financial means permitted, he began building his own watch collection. When he discovered Bovet, with its bow and its crown at 12 o’clock and its delightfully curved case, he fell in love with the company he immediately referred to “as the last princess of fine Swiss watchmaking”. Pascal Raffy nonetheless decided to invest massively from 2001 onwards in order to give his teams the means required to develop the Bovet and Dimier houses on both the manufacturing and commercial sides. Within less than 10 years, he had secured the loyalty of an international retail network and thus advanced in pursuit of a fundamental objective: that of returning to China, where the history of the company set up by Edouard Bovet in 1822 first began. The young man from Neuchâtel emigrated to Canton and set up a watch business which prospered rapidly, to the extent of seeing its timepieces marking off time at the very heart of the Forbidden City. One simply could not dream of a more prestigious past.

BOVET and APJ add new stars to the Haitian firmament. Like every significant episode in the history of the House of BOVET, it was a meeting of like-minded men - Pascal Raffy and Paul Haggis – that gave rise to the partnership between BOVET 1822 and the Artists for Peace and Justice Foundation, which for five years has been carrying out important work in Haiti. A school has been opened in the country to provide basic education for children, as well as an Art Academy for adults. “We believe that Education has the Power to change a Nation” has become the Foundation’s maxim and perfectly sums up the values shared by BOVET and APJ. Art at the service of education and an entire nation. A cause close to the heart of Pascal Raffy and BOVET. The event which took place on the fringes of the Toronto Film Festival brought together many of the actors appearing in “ The Third Person ”, Paul Haggis’s latest film which he produced, wrote and directed, and also personalities from the world of TV and music, as well as 300 guests determined to support this noble cause. An auction raised the exceptional sum of US$600,000 which will allow APJ to continue developing its activities on a long-term basis, educating more students and building new infrastructures. The highlight was the auction of a timepiece specially manufactured for this cause, a unique piece from the Château de Môtiers Collection displaying on its dial a gardenia, the symbol of purity, sincerity and beauty, painted by hand by one of the artisans of the House. The sum raised by this timepiece alone will provide for the schooling of 50 children for an entire year. Moran Atias

Piaget’s first Middle Eastern ambassador honors the Piaget Rose collection

news

At Piaget, every jewel is a symbol of love whose inspiration is translated into a thousand and one bouquets of light dedicated to feminine beauty. So it was completely natural that the rose, the most frequently gifted flower in the world became a motif dear to the House whose collections were inspired by plant life. Thirty years earlier, Yves Piaget was honored with the unique and voluptuously vibrant winning rose at the Geneva International Competition of New Roses, being christened after him; the Yves Piaget Rose. Capturing this emotionally beautiful moment forever, the exquisite brand regularly pays homage to the stunning flower, having dedicated an entire collection of spectacular watches and jewellery pieces to diversely representing the elite flower. Piaget’s Rose has lived a saga of beauty and love and its 30th year was commemorated around the world in inimitable ways that symbolized splendor and grace. As the celebrations made their way to the Middle East, the strikingPiaget Rose collection was honored in a special way by the brand’s first Ambassador for the Middle East, Yara.

19

In light of Yara’s recent collaboration with Piaget, the singer provides an idyllic reflection of Piaget’s values as her elegance and grace make her the brand’s perfect ambassador. Venerating the Piaget Rose collection’s 30th anniversary, Yara partook in an iconic shoot that saw hersensual and exuberant pieces from the gorgeous Piaget Rose collection. Every piece from the Piaget Rose collection is a message of seduction, sensuality andfemininity. Both Yara and Piaget perfectly offset each other’s beauty as she attired herself in dreamy, romantic and dazzling jewellery along with delicately luxurious timepieces in the commemorative photo shoot. Akin to Yara’s tribute to the milestone moment, the 30th anniversary of the award-winning Yves Piaget Rose was distinctively memorialized all over the world. Heralding the momentous occasion,Piaget took their commitment to preserving the history of the Rose a step further by becoming a patron of the project to restore the former Rose garden of the Chateau de Malmaison. Piaget has sponsored the renovation project of one of the most famous and enviable Rose collections in all of Europe, bringing one of the most beautiful testimonials to the love of roses back to life.Additionally, the 105th edition of the International Competition for new roses at the Bagatelle Rose garden saw Piaget honor its commitment and times past by partnering with the renowned competition and creating a dazzling trophy for the laureate, a true display of love for the queen of flowers.

Summing up his dedication and adoration for the delicate and immaculate flowers, Yves Piaget said, “I have always been in love with roses, fascinated by the work done by breeders, whose imagination is matched by their absolute discipline. They seek only beauty and performance. In 1982, when the rose peony was christened the Yves Piaget rose, it was an extremely emotional moment for me. I love these graded shades from pink to mauve, I love its exceptional perfume. It’s a true delight. To celebrate this joy daily, all you need is a little row of a dozen rose bushes.”

Chrono Hawk Hollywoodland

A Star is Born Girard-Perregaux celebrates the art of cinema with a special edition of the Hawk Collection: the Chrono Hawk Hollywoodland. This special timepiece highlights once again Girard-Perregaux’s passion for the cinema, and its engagement to celebrate movies. The all-new Chrono Hawk Hollywoodland takes centre stage clad in gleaming gold and black ceramic case and bezel, a material whose very existence is emblematic of the progression of time and science. The watchmakers pay playful homage to Hollywood with a keen eye toward the materials they used with alternating matte and gloss finishes accentuating the relief carving of the case. The dial works mightily to increase the depth of field. Luminescent keys (all the better to see in a dark cinema, if you must), a worked flange, counters and strikes carved in relief fit together, inspired by the shape of the bridge. The chronograph functions are traditional but its performance is pervasive, thanks to the mechanical, self-winding GP03300 manufactured calibre, whose visible oscillating weight by the sapphire recalls the Brand’s identity codes. The all-new Chrono Hawk Hollywoodland, of course, was designed in tribute to Hollywood: a dream of a watch paying fealty to the industry that makes dreams spring vividly to life. This timepiece also highlights the Brand’s commitment to celebrate movies. In 2012, GirardPerregaux announced it would be the Exclusive Timekeeper and a Founding Supporter of the new Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, to be located in Los Angeles.

Tourbillon with

three gold Bridges The design of the famous Girard-Perregaux Tourbillon with three gold Bridges not only balances aesthetics with technical prowess: it establishes a new vision of watchmaking - symbolic and eternal - creating a burst of emotion, nourished by a fantastic story and born in the hands of talented watchmakers. After more than 125 years of existence, the mechanism, which was patented in 1884, is still making the news. Available in a pink or white gold case, the mainplate is now sanded to enhance the three gold Bridges and the openworked barrel drum opens onto the micro-rotor. The new fine features of the Girard-Perregaux Tourbillon with three gold Bridges underscore this architecture over which time has no command. Born in the hands of Constant Girard-Perregaux in the nineteenth century, the three Bridges movement is a revolution in the history of fine watchmaking. With it, the mechanism becomes a design feature in its own right, extending beyond a solely technical function. The Tourbillon with three gold Bridges won supreme recognition in the form of a gold medal at the Paris International Exhibition in 1889 for bringing together all the know-how of Girard-Perregaux with an entire chapter of watchmaking history.

Within a 41 millimeter diameter, which fits the wrist perfectly, the three, arrow-shaped parallel Bridges form the perfect balance. Their geometry allows for no mistakes as any imperfection would be revealed. Entirely hand-made, the finishings require such dexterity that they can only be done by a handful of craftsmen. The Bridges are “rounded-off”: the bevelling gives them a domed shape, along their entire length, a perfect curve. Light glides and reflects off their “mirror polish” finishing, offering a captivating contrast with the matt mainplate. At 12 o’clock, the barrel drum is meticulously skeletoncrafted to reveal the oscillation of the elegant and ingenious platinum micro-rotor. The tourbillon system is also the subject of particular care as its 80 components need to be assembled in a 10 millimeter diameter. The cage, like the escapement and pallets bridge are chamfered and hand-polished as are the gold adjustment screws. The GP09600 self-winding movement operates in the background. Entirely designed and assembled in the Manufacture’s workshops, it offers the qualities of the greatest fine watchmaking mechanisms: those that strike the perfect balance between art and technique.

HM5 RT, A Watch Full Of Surprises!

For MB&F founder Maximilian Büsser, growing up as a child in the 1970s meant living in a constant state of awe and wonder. Supersonic jets flew through the air and through space; American muscle cars dominated the silver screen in road movies and fuelled the imagination. The Lamborghini Miura launched a new genre of supercars that looked as though they could break the sound barrier while standing still (creations that led the young Max to dream of being a car designer). Lasers, transistors, microwaves, hovercrafts and jet-packs gave the impression that the difference between science fiction and science fact was just a matter of when, not if. And with the arrival of quartz wristwatches, watch designs were transformed from looking like something your grandfather wore, to something Captain Kirk might wear on the Starship Enterprise. HM5 RT takes these childhood dreams and gives them a new lease of life by putting them On the Road Again. In the HM5 RT, hour and minute displays look straightforward, but they are bi-directional jumping hours with indications inversed, reflected 90° and magnified 20%. HM5 RT has a futuristic case design, but it’s from the 1970s. HM5 RT has a mechanical movement, but inspired by an era when quartz was King. The unmistakable wedge-shaped case of On the Road Again

34

news

is direct homage to the plucky Amida Digitrend. However, it also has unmistakable references to the low-slung supercars of the epoch. The purpose of the louvres on these awe-inspiring cars was to restrict sunlight (and heat) from entering the near horizontal rear window. The functional louvres on HM5 do the opposite in that they open to allow light down onto the SuperLumiNova numbers on the hours and minutes indication disks to charge them. The disks are actually flat on top of the movement (under the louvres), not vertically at the front of the case where they appear to be thanks to some optical magic. Opening and closing the louvres also changes the dial’s light intensity. The louvres are opened and closed by a slide set into the side of the case. Another distinguishing feature of supercars are large dual exhaust pipes that are usually seen accompanied by a roar of engine noise and smoking rubber. But HM5’s exhausts are not there to expel combustion gases in a throaty roar, but to drain water in case – like James Bond’s Lotus in ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’ – HM5 RT gets wet. And no futurist icon of the 1970s is complete without a jet. HM5 RT’s ergonomically sculptured crown – inset with the MB&F battle-axe motif – looks as though it could just as easily power a rocket to the Alpha Centauri, or the Batmobile, as it powers On the Road Again into the future.

for the new emperors

CLASSIC QUANTIEME The launch of the new DeWitt CLASSIC collection marks an inspired change for the Geneva workshops, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. While introducing a resolutely classic style and extremely pure lines, this new design remains faithful to the DeWitt DNA. Offering a subtle blend of character and elegance, the new CLASSIC collection is balanced and understated. The case is thinner than on the Academia and Twenty-8-Eight collections, and features a refined and understated version of the iconic imperial column motif. The 40 mm-diameter rose-gold case and the soft, curved lines of the horns give an impression of extreme lightness. The watch is equipped with a self-winding mechanical movement. The CLASSIC Quantieme watch offers a power reserve of approximately 42 hours. In addition to indicating the hours, minutes, and seconds, the movement has a calendar with days of the week in the aperture at 11 o’clock, months at 1 o’clock and the date using a central hand. Constantly pushing the boundaries of watchmaking technology in pursuit of aesthetic perfection, a mother-of-pearl moon

phase indicator positioned at 6 o’clock is delicately placed on a “goldstone” sky. Goldstone is a glittering glass discovered in Venice in the seventeenth century, which later developed into the famous Murano glass. Ranging from black to white, through a delicate shade of midnight blue, the sunray dial allows light and shadow to subtly interact with shape and colour. The CLASSIC Quantieme is a paragon of traditional watchmaking expertise with its sunray dial, embellished with apertures, a moon phase indicator and appliqué markers, and openwork sword-shaped hands. It meets the high standards of finish adopted by the DeWitt Manufacture since its creation: satin-finished, polished and chamfered surfaces. The high quality of finishing work also applies to the oscillating weight embellished with “Côtes de Genève”, signed by DeWitt, which can be seen through a sapphire crystal. There is also a “W” engraved on the rose-gold fluted crown. Designed with the artistry and expertise of traditional Swiss watchmaking, the new CLASSIC collection by DeWitt is the result of a constant pursuit for harmony and aesthetics. btcwatches.com

revolutionary by tradition

Arnold & Son is proud to announce the DBG winner of the ‘Best Multi-Time Zone Watch’. Awarded during the 9th Edition of the Middle East Premier Awards 2013

Arnold & Son was among the winners of The Arabian Watches & Jewellery (AWJ) Magazine’s - the Middle East Premier Awards. The winners were announced in a glittering ceremony For the ninth consecutive year, Arabian Watches & Jewellery (AWJ) Magazine hosted the Middle East Premier Awards, presented alongside Jewellery Arabia 2013. The award ceremony was accompanied by a grand dinner reception at The Ritz Carlton, in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The event was attended by over 300 distinguished high profile guests. Arnold & Son is proud to communicate as winner in the category ‘Best Multi-Time Zone Watch’ the DBG. A masterpiece of perfect symmetry, the Instrument DBG Equation GMT features two separate time displays, each driven by its own barrel and gear train with its own escapement and balance. This highly unusual technical specification permits the two displays to be set independently of each other. Although it is a standard feature of watches displaying two or more time zones for the hour hands to be set to different times, being able to set the minute hand as well opens up other possibilities. It means, for instance, that the display can be set to show the precise time in zones that differ from Greenwich Mean Time by a fraction of an hour, such as a quarter or a half. In addition, a subdial at 12 o’clock shows the equation of the two time zones on a 24-hour basis. This enables the wearer to see the time difference between the two zones and also to ascertain whether it is day or night in the second zone. Both time zones share a common permanent seconds in the shape of the long slender hand emanating from the centre of the dial, which is a hallmark feature of the new Arnold & Son’s Instrument collection.

40

Watches with a double barrel and escapement have a tradition going back many years in horology but are rarely found today. The principle is ideally suited to the Arnold & Son’s instrument line because a separate barrel/gear train and balance/escapement enable the watch to house different complications without having one influencing the accuracy of the other by draining its energy. It is therefore perfectly adapted to be used for a second time zone, as in the DBG Equation GMT. Another practical advantage of having a double barrel/gear train and a double balance/escapement is the fact that it allows to house two completely different technical solutions and characteristics for each complication in one and the same movement.

ROYAL COLLECTION ROYAL COLLECTION

No less impressive than the watch’s technical features is its aesthetic appeal, and in particular its symmetry, which is largely determined by the positioning of the elements in the dual movement. The view from the back reveals a pleasingly balanced arrangement of bridges, barrels and gear trains. From the front, and highlighted against a backdrop of Côtes de Genève stripes on the lower half of the dial, are two triple-armed balances secured in position by the two balance cocks, which face one another and fuse together to create a circle. Completing the overall sense of balance are the two crowns, one in the conventional position at 3 o’clock, the other at 9. The two mainsprings are both wound using the crown on the right. However, the time in each of the two selected time zones is set using its own crown, which ensures that neither of the zones is moved or changed advertently. The time zone on the left is set using the crown at 9 o’clock and the time zone on the right by the crown at 3 o’clock.

Despite a relatively quiet gold medal game, by his own highstandards, scoring 12 points and adding 3 assists, it was Parker’s performances throughout the tournament which deservedly earned him the MVP Award presented by Tissot.

T-Complication Squelette

Tissot PRS 516 Extreme The Tissot PRS 516 Extreme is a modern take on the famous Tissot PR 516 timekeeping legend of the 1960s. At that time already, the PR 516 was a tribute to motorsport and Tissot’s related deeprooted passion for those fast machines. The original model was famous for its bracelet that integrated cut-out circles illustrating steering wheels of pioneering race cars.Today, you may find a model with that option, reminiscent of those times. However, it is today’s cars that take the lead in the Tissot PRS 516 Extreme. Its straight case line takes from the smooth and somewhat futuristic bodywork of the ultimate modern car, while the details on the dial and bezel illustrate its sophisticated dashboard. Extreme The Tissot PRS 516 Extreme definitely takes it to the limit. There is no stopping suchdynamism. Its honeycomb bracelet that illustrates the sophisticated ventilation system of a modern car keeps the engine cool while it fires up with its dynamic stripe around the bracelet hands down, leaving a smoky trace on the date display, which, with its screws, reflect its mechanical nature with the fast wheel on the caseback to show for it.

LATE NIGHT GLAM ESSENTIAL GLAMOUR IN DAZZLING NIGHTS For the holiday season we light up the nights with sparkling stars and a sprinkling of snow. Two New Gents take up the season’s colour themes with shimmering gold and black surfaces, dazzling and mysterious at once. An original Square offers a new form of elegance dressed in black lace, an unspoken promise of what the night may bring, enticement embedded in a transparent bangle. These three are the epitome of style for the holidays. Essential elegance and glamour in black and gold.

TROMPE L’OEIL THE ART OF DECEPTION TAKES A PLAYFUL TURN “Trompe l’oeil” turns heads. This art demands a double-take, a second look that belies the first glance and rewards the viewer with a smile. Swatch celebrates this playful tradition with image-watches that pretend to be one thing and turn out to be another. FOLLOW UP (GO701) appears to be a zipper ready to unzip, while SVEGLIA (GT105) is an old-fashioned alarm clock (not). STOP THINK TALK (SUOG104) offers a word to the wise, its advice appearing on the dial one word at a time. Friends of the art of haute couture will delight in the visual sleight-of-hand that turns leather, metal and pearl bracelets into playful tributes to legendary brands—and they tell the time, too: FEEL MY SOUL (LK330), SOUL2WATCH (LK333) and SEE MY SOUL (LK332), respectively.

Size Matters, But Style Makes The Difference The Irony Chrono from Swatch is a high-performance time machine. The nine debut models capitalize on the big new case in stainless steel (43 mm, up from 40) to exhibit clear, essential design and fine-tuned, split-second accuracy. Men will doubtless appreciate the bigger format, pure performance and precisely calibrated chronograph. That said, what makes the Irony Chrono such a fine machine isn’t the technology – it’s the style. Up front and centre in the inaugural Irony Chrono collection are two powerful models that speak of performance with casual fluency. Black and silver dashboard dials, a classic symmetrical subdual array, tachometric scales engraved on the bezel and – a masterful touch – seductive mesh steel bracelets, supple and undeniably sexy. They are flanked by seven models featuring richly detailed dials, brushed, polished or PVD stainless steel cases and a range of casually elegant bracelets.

FLIK FLAK FALL NEWS COLLECTION 2013 Flik Flak – Hello Kitty Delicious doughnuts and glamorous glitz Hello Kitty and Flik Flak have the ingredients for melting moments The friendship story between the world’s number one children’s watch and the iconic Sanrio character adds two new chapters this season. A duo of Flik Flak Hello Kitty watches presents the yummy side of life – and snows the seeds for answering the question of whether diamonds are a girl’s best friend. Both have what it takes to add ticks to little girls’ wish lists and act as the perfect tokens of friendship during the season of giving. In the words of Hello Kitty herself, “You can never have too many friends”.

Hello Kitty Café The Hello Kitty Café watch is a refreshing invitation to think pink. Bows and all, the cute cartoon character is surrounded by sweet surprises along the fashionable and practical textile strap. Doughnuts, muffins and shakes are timely reminders that it is always good to be punctual for café play dates to avoid encountering a plate of crumbs and sticky straws. Color coding in two different shades of pink are more than references to the prospect of strawberry or raspberry ice cream. They help young misses to tell the time with ease with the clever separation of the minutes and hours. Cookie dates have never been so educational.

Hello Kitty Turquoise Diamonds So is bling the thing? Or are diamonds a girl’s best friend? Hello Kitty Turquoise Diamonds suggests there is an element of truth in both. Sparkling gemstones circle the watch’s dial while Hello Kitty is sitting pretty on a huge pink diamond pictured on the textile trap. Even the translucent blue case contributes to the playful razzle-dazzle as it catches the light. Mirroring the blue and pink of the precious stones featuring in the strap design is helpful color coding on the dial to make sure that the owner does not miss out for a minute. This watch doubles as a sparkling gift and a coveted possession, bringing a shine to the eyes of little girls everywhere.

Flik Flak – Spider-Cycle Is it a watch or is it a web? For Flik Flak and Marvel™ it’s time to spin out a new Spider-Man adventure Spider-Man may be 15 times more agile than a regular human and able to lift 10 tons, but the world’s favourite children’s watch rises to the challenge 24/7. Every second counts for a super hero and Spider-Man is again entrusting his timekeeping to the Swiss precision of Flik Flak. Spider-Cycle is a new watch for small adventurers with big ideas. It’s no surprise Spider-Man doesn’t carry any weapons with devices like this at his fingertips… A spooky spider lingers on the bold turning bezel of Spider-Cycle, but is guaranteed not to bite, unlike its ancestor encountered by schoolboy Peter Parker all those years ago. An intriguing web winds its way around the watch as the searching eyes of the iconic Spider-Man mask stare out from the dial’s centre. Black and white colour coding enables accurate time telling, even in moments of adventure-induced pressure. Spider-Man’s unrivalled skill in leaping from skyscraper to skyscraper, to heroically defeat a powerful thief, gangster or megalomaniac, turns into a talent for scaling the soft textile strap of this watch. Whether Spider-Cycle is given or received, it will always retain its performance powers with robustness to match.

Rado D-Star Ceramic Chronograph A strong and elegant statement that stands the test of time

Rado introduces four new ultra-suave and sophisticated models to its eye-catching Rado D-Star collection. These new automatic chronograph additions to the Rado D-Star family are a handsome group. In black, or plasma high-tech ceramic, these timepieces exude masculinity. As with every Rado, each watch in this new mini-collection has just as much substance as style. From the materials used, to the technology behind their construction, this is what Rado is all about. Incorporating a specially developed movement, these watches boast an extended 60 hour power reserve. With this longerpower reserve, the Rado D-Star Ceramic Chronograph will be running on time ready for you to head back to the office or hit the gym after a relaxing weekend. With two chronograph counters, these watches have everything needed in a timepiece for the man who dares to be different. The model with a leather strap and plasma high-tech ceramic uniquely dapper style suited to a gentleman about town. The use of black high-tech ceramic lends the only black watch in the group a sporty touch perfect for stylish dressers with an active

lifestyle. Although the four models vary in their details, they all hold the same material benefits: extreme scratch-resistance, hypoallergenic properties and exceptional wearer comfort. Twenty-first century technology for a modern, manly look Plasma high-tech ceramic lends three of these watches a striking and mysterious metallic brilliance, without the use of any metal. The plasma carburising process is patented and exclusive to Rado and is a form of modern alchemy. Gases activated at 20,000˚C alter the composition of high-tech ceramic without affecting its essential properties. Although only the surface color of the ceramic is changed as the platinum color emerges from each piece, it will not fade over time, instead retaining its naturally scratch-resistant shine for years to come. The addition of a ‘monobloc’ one-piece case created using ground-breaking technology confirms that the latest Rado D-Stars are true Rado creations. The evolution of the conventional oval-shaped case maintains the DNA of the brand: material mastery and dedication to design.

Subtle, minimalistic and chic are the key words when it comes to the design of these simple, pared-down ceramic beauties. The new face of Rado has a new face of its own: large open dials for easy readability and an unobscured view. The ladies collection comprises eight classy quartz models. The collection offers something for every lady – regardless of style. For those who like to look white hot there is an all white model with white ceramic case and bracelet. Black ceramic features on two models and there is a glittering metallic-look model in plasma high-tech ceramic, with 93 Top Wesselton diamonds on the dial. Brilliant. For gents there is a full range of quartz and automatic models to choose from, each offering clean lines and large, open dials. The plasma high-tech ceramic case on leather strap offers a daring mix of modernity and old school chic. There is also a set of five manly, supersized chronographs presented in polished black, or plasma high-tech ceramic, as well as a bold and breathtaking full matt black model. With one of these on your wrist time will always be on your side.

The Rado Hyper Chrome Automatic Chronograph Gold Limited Edition Black gold Rado is famous for its use of high-tech ceramic and the latest additions to its Hyper Chrome family show exactly why. Combining lustrous, sleek and shiny high-tech ceramic with 18k luxury, Rado has struck watchmaking gold. With its groundbreaking monobloc case and gleaming integrated full ceramic bracelet, the Hyper Chrome Automatic Chronograph Gold Limited Edition is a stylish heavyweight which is surprisingly light due to the use of high-tech ceramic. What better material to offset brilliant black than 18k yellow or rose gold? The two materials form a perfect fusion for a look of undeniable prestige. But prestige is never present at the expense of practicality at Rado and each Limited Edition is not only super stylish but also highly comfortable to wear. Each model is limited to just 333 individually numbered pieces and everything you can see that looks gold, is gold. Dial, indexes, side inserts, hands, and pushers: nothing is less than precious.

Rado HyperChrome UTC The Ultimate Travelling Companion The world is becoming a smaller place and many of us are travelling more for business and pleasure. But what does the twenty-first century traveler really need when hopping on a plane? There are only a handful of essential items that no travelers should be without and an accurate watch is one of them. But what is more important: knowing the time at your destination or the time back in your home country so you know when it is OK to call friends, family and business contacts without waking them up? With the new Rado HyperChrome UTC there is no decision to make as the watch can show two different time zones at the same time. UTC stands for Coordinated Universal Time and is a more accurate take on the traditional ‘GMT’. At Rado, two different time zones also ensure double the style, making this the ultimate travelling companion for fashionable jet setters. A second time zone on a Rado watch is a rare feature, appearing only on multifunction models and one watch from the 1960s. So, the UTC movement marks a rare foray into complications for the Swiss master of materials.

Rado HyperChrome UTC Wherever you decide to travel, the Rado UTC is the ultimate travelling companion. And, as it can show two time zones simultaneously, you can celebrate New Year wherever you are but be sure that you don’t miss out on New Year at home. The focus may be on the function, but this doesn’t mean that the materials have taken a back seat. Not only is the Rado HyperChrome UTC practical and useful, it also benefits from a high-tech ceramic case with the ground-breaking Rado monobloc construction. This ensures lightness, scratch-resistance and comfort, all of which make for a pleasurable travel experience. With three of the four models sporting plasma high-tech ceramic cases materials really are still at the forefront of the collection.

Hamilton Khaki X-Landing Aviation shows its true metal The Khaki X-Landing takes the emotions on a nostalgic journey back to the first all-metal aircraft of the 1920s, and the rationale on a trip co-piloted by a feature for measuring the top of descent (TOD). The Khaki X-Landing provides pilots with precision and style in a sophisticated GMT chronograph, with design touches reflecting the materials and structures of the early metal planes. This duo of limited edition watches passionately tells the story of an aviation tradition in the language of today.

Timely start of descent The TOD marks the transition from the cruise phase of a flight to the descent phase. Pilot wearers simply mark the aircraft’s cruising altitude in feet at the 9 o’clock position, using the crown located at 10 o’clock. Integrating a standard descent angle of 3°, the Khaki X-Landing then reveals the number of nautical miles before the final destination that marks the start of the optimal descent in a small, dedicated window. The language of aviation continues on the bezel’s surface where 24 different time zones are printed. On one model these are represented by place names, on the others by terms from the military or name time zones, appealingly taking in hotel, tango and whiskey.

Aviation style True to form, the brand with a long and proven aviation history, demonstrates an astute eye for detail in all of the Khaki X-Landing pieces. One model has a distinctive dark grey PVD case that complements the predominantly black and white colour scheme and contrasts with a red GMT hand. Sections of its dial resemble the corrugated metal panels of the aircraft that took to the skies in the 1920s and 1930s. True class is certified visually by an elegant integrated black leather strap reminding of traditional sporty perforated gloves with holes of different sizes. The other version, with an impressive round-the-world tour logged around the bezel, has a brushed stainless steel case and choice of metal or integrated brown leather attachment. Subtle touches of red add dynamism, standing out against the dial’s background with a woven metal effect that catches the light as the sky makes sure it has the final word.

JASMINE ROSE GOLD The jasmine collection presents its totally new flower. A symphony of rose gold PVD and steel, this new model embodies simplicity, delicacy and refinement, once again paying homage to the heroine of the Puccini opera, Turandot, whose splendor is associated with jasmine. Available in 29 and 35mm case diameters, this timepiece will adorn the wrists of ladies from the East to the West. Created by RAYMOND WEIL in 2011, the jasmine collection will now display its newfound finery. With a jasmine flower enlargement decorating the center of the dial, enhanced with the arc-shaped “RAYMOND WEIL” logo, the jasmine has never been so feminine. Thus, with its curves that are reminiscent of the delicacy of the flower that lends the collection its name, the jasmine comes in steel, steel and rose gold, diamond set versions, on a metal bracelet or leather strap. A blue sapphire lacquer dome, in the guise of a crown, adds the perfect finishing touch to the setting, worthy of a princess. Available as an automatic or quartz, in a 35 or 29mm case, each model in the collection will stir the hearts of the ladies in our lives. In the all rose gold version, the jasmine’s polished steel bracelet, case and crown are coated with 5N PVD. Its dial providing a silver contrast is punctuated by black Roman numerals. The blue leaf-shaped hands underline the collection’s classic aspect. The rose gold fillet surrounding the date at 3 o’clock provides it with enhancing emphasis. The harmoniously rounded, voluptuous bracelet links sit snugly on the wrist jasmine remains, as always, the most beautiful flower a lady can receive.

Emporio Armani presents the new Meccanico Collection:

a seamless match of mechanical innovation and timeless style. Functionality, interpreted through sophisticated design, is the key element: the self-winding movement of the Meccanico watch undergoes a wear-in process, running for 1000 hours before completing quality control. This process promotes a longer-lasting life of the movement, and ensures the watch will run with increased efficiency and precision over the years. Attention to detail is quintessentially Armani. The Meccanico watches feature a round or rectangular case in stainless steel, black or rose gold IP. All the watches have visible movements. The straps are available in both croco printed and smooth leather. Bracelets in stainless steel are ergonomic with butterfly deployant buckles.

EA FALL/WINTER JEWELRY COLLECTION The new Emporio Armani jewelry collection is a play of charming juxtapositions that creates a timeless style. The modern and iconic design merges classic Armani elements such as clean lines and textural geometries with romantic accents. In the women’s collection, stripes are declined in a series of striking rose gold and stainless steel pieces alternating bands made of gunmetal, black epoxy and rhinestones. Whimsical rose gold plated chains are used in clusters for delicate earrings, bracelets and necklaces. The men’s jewelry collection delivers a modern, masculine look via smooth steel seamlessly mixed with mesh. Perforated details are another key point, together with gray rubber and black metal in addition to stainless steel cufflinks and rings. The Fall/Winter Emporio Armani jewelry collection is available worldwide through the Emporio Armani boutiques and select retail partners.

Understated and elegant, the Emporio Armani Meccanico Collection ideally matches every aspect of the contemporary man’s life, from everyday casual to formal.

MASTER SERIES 94981 S-390 With this new Master Series model, TITONI has added another exceptional piece to a very exquisite collection. At its heart the dial of this model displays the graceful “Geneva Stripes”. The outer ring of the dial consists of fine rhomboids and is lined with elegant, trapezeshaped indexes. Both parts of the refined, black-coloured dial are linked together through an additional, 12-hour time zone and a dayand-night indicator positioned right next to the second hour wheel, ensuring its wearer never loses track of time. Finally, the big date indicator rounds off this beautifully balanced and very masculine timepiece. The elegance of this new Master Series model is further emphasized by the especially gradated bezel. A five-link bracelet and a double folded butterfly-clasp complete this new addition. The watch lover can additionally view the mechanical interior of this COSC certified masterpiece through the see-through case back. The Master Series collection, as does this model, stands for exclusive materials and the fine art of watchmaking. The Swiss family business has stood for these qualities for generations.

MASTER SERIES 94982 S-ST-387 TITONI presents a new model in its classical Master Series collection, adding another sterling piece to an already exceptional line. The dial of this chronometer displays a variety of exquisite features, starting with slender and elegant roman numeral indexes, accompanied by equally elegant hour hands. The heart of the dial displays the refined «Geneva Stripes» and is home to the power reserve as well as to a second hour display. Twenty-four additional hours allow the wearer to keep track of a second time zone whilst never losing sight of the present, marked by a classic date-display in arabic numerals. Finally, the dial is rounded off by a third, slightly slanted ring, marking every passing second. This Master Series model is accompanied by a black leather strap, making the timepiece one of a kind. The see-through case back allows the watch lover a clear view of the mechanical movements of this COSC certified timepiece. The Master Series is a synonym for outstanding Swiss quality and design, both equally reflected in this new Master Series model. The family business has stood for these Swiss quality standards for generations.
