Broad Channel Island Waterfront Initiative Professor: Angela Co, Fall 2018 Partner: Emily Yuen

Focusing on the daily tidal cycles and FEMA/NYC Planning Department guidelines for waterfront construction in the five boroughs, my partner and I devised a scheme in which community blocks on Broad Channel Island in Queens could retain a waterfront lifestyle while meeting the these enacted guidelines for resiliency in coastal communities. Following the events of Hurricane Sandy, New York City at the recommendation of the FEMA raised it’s design flood elevation to twelve feet resulting in a new city initiative to raise all existing homes on the island and in other waterfront communities in Queens and Brooklyn to this twelve footmark as a means of escaping any storm surge and prolonged coastal flooding. With that we devised a strategy for individual cul de sacs on Broad Channel to tailor make their own waterfronts. Built on top of sea wall which conforms to the natural topography of the site is a twenty-fivefoot-wide boardwalk which sits at the new design flood elevation. Acting as a berm, the combination sea wall and boardwalk preserves the natural lowland marshes of the bay adjacent to the water and the backyards of the broad channel residents. In this specific demonstration, we devised a community waterfront in which tidal pools are situated within the marshes of the bay. These pools are actively filled based on the daily high tide and slowly drain throughout the day until the high tide rolls back in and refills each pool. A single filtrated pool is situated along the central stretch for families who are concerned about young children swimming in Jamaica Bay. A boathouse is situated along the eastern edge of the site, following the same tidal activation principles. This would provide the community with safe storage of car-top sides boat or watercraft. On the interior of the berm are two leisure facilities, a single dedicated to relaxation through an indoor spa and thermal bath, the other an rec center featuring ping pong tables, shuffle board courts, and a private yoga studio. The renders provided show the activation of the project based on the daily tidal cycle

Auburn Public Theater Cayuga County, NY
Professor: Terrence Goode, Spring 2019 Partners: Razan Bairagdar, Christian Onada

Focusing on the small town of Auburn, New York. The studio prompt challenged us to design a theater for Cayuga County that could be accessible to the community, particular the local community college which would call the facility its home. Embracing the nature of the space as performative, we devised a facade arrangement in which the brick identity of the neighborhood would be bisected by the program. In this case, the facade becomes a literal curtain, which appears to lift itself revealing several entrances into the building. Drawing a parallel between the ceremonial act of raising the curtain and the opening of the building. Window box penetrations on the Northern facade aim to frame the movement and interaction of the theater goers as they manuever the space and await the performance to start or return from its intermission. The building is then split into three sections, one of the social exchanges of the community, in which atrium transcends four floors. Visitors to the theater most engage with the atrium walkways as they provide the primary access to the theater space. Creating a vertical dynamic of interaction between the public performance space on the interior of the atrium and the visitor. The second section is the practice and study space, located on the Southern face, catering towards the students of the local performing arts programs and resident faculty. Providing dance room and library space for all who are passionate about the performing arts. And the third and final space being a two tiered theater, which holds roughly two hundred and fifty theater goers. The slope of the theater provides all in attendance a near perfect visual onto the action. While the stage’s bracing reflects sound onto the orchestra and mezzanine. On the interior of the stage is a flywell system, housing the various sets and curtain systems, thus requiring the space to be rather tall to account for the necessary clearance.

Private Academy Campus Somers, NY Professional Experience, Summer 2019 All Work Authorized by KG+D Architects

Tasked with reimagining a multi-million square property in Eastern New York. Our firm worked to develop a private school which would cater towards a new generation of course work expressing a deep routed interest in preparing students for the emerging STEM fields and industries. Divided into five interconnected buildings on the site, the core building would house the administrative offices, cafeteria, gym, and the specialized classroom spaces (featuring a robotics and aeronautics lab). While the remaining four buildings would be arranged in a two-and-two system, in which the bottom two floors are an intermixing of classroom, study rooms, and faculty spaces. With the upper two floors serving as the dormitory and leisure spaces for students and resident faculty. Utilizing the central atriums of each building to draw ample amounts of natural light into the building cores.
