FINE ART Mix Media

Experimenting with ink allowed me to create abstract piece of images. Instead of getting a brush and panting with ink, I challenged myself to mono printing. I just did some basic shapes and lines with the ink. As an outcome i had a few prints which looked very contemporary and stood out. I chose mono printing as it’s an interesting way to create images or even explore the relationship between the ink and the paper. Plus it allows you to think more creatively. Even though the final results can be messy, you can develop them buy re-using the ink over and over.

FINE ART Mix Media

These pages consist of a mixture of media. From ink and paint to monoprinting. Inspired by Will Ashford and Dieter Koth I chose to incorporate illustrative imagery on top of old book pages. I really liked Ashford's technique of using ink on book pages as they blend in perfectly with the text. I kept the colour a minimum to only black. However by adding a bit of colour you can instantly feel a more up beat emotion. However black and white gives different interpretations, especially through the different tones.

FINE ART Mix Media

For this experiment I chose to do abstract collage making. This experiment really gave me a lot of ideas. As you can see I done collages where I’ve incorporated text. Also using my own edited images from a previous experiment. Instead of cutting pieces and placing them over each other, I decided to obscure aspect of the image out with the text and in return managed to successfully create an abstract piece of work.

FINE ART Mix Media

Here I have experimented with Bill Zendal’s collage technique as well as Chaidalis. I combined it with my own images. These collages were created digitally as I felt I could get his inspiration across more vividly. I used Photoshop to create these and as an outcome for artist response they worked well. I like that there is a lot more going on in the centre of the images rather than the entire space as it makes it more interesting to focus on and take in. You can see I combined mixtures of colour and shapes. I believe they all contrast well together, especially with the shapes I added to obscure parts of the image out. My favourite is the black and white one in the upper right corner. It seems very mysterious and in a way rebellious. I feel that because to me it seems as if it is trying to tell me something with the shattered glass surrounding the text.

FINE ART Mix Media

I enjoy painting in general and one of the experiments I had to do was based on the theme covert and obscured. Here you can see I have decided to play around with the paint. It was one of the ideal materials to obscure parts of images out and to keep it hidden from the naked eye. The images are of mix media, some are from magazines and some are my own photography. The range of paper gave different textures in general. I looked Gerhard Richter’s use of paint on the images and took his idea of scraping paint. By dragging the paint from the corner makes it look like the images are stuck within the pain and are more like trapped. Thus bringing out the feeling of claustrophobia. I loved the way the paint complimented the images in the background.

Photography Burning Experimentation

I went on a visit around London and came across a few attractions. One of my experiments were to burn images inspired by my chosen artist. As you can see I burnt the images from the back and then around the sides. Since one of my themes was to look at vintage photography, I opted to burn my images as it gave them an ancient vibe. As well as burning, I edited them on Photoshop to play with the hue and saturation. Reason being was to experiment how to make the burning effect look more real.

Photography Scratching Experimentation

These images illustrate the Calais beach in France. I’ve scratched on the image to make sharp marks. I’ve used a scalpel to create these marks and as a result they look bold and the entire atmosphere of the image changes. As a simple old picture they would look more pleasant and show more of a holiday theme. However inspired by the artist E J, I scratched all over which gave them a more depressing and dull mood. Even when I edited the images they spoke in a whole new way.

Graphics Collaborative Project

ROLES: ANNIE: i will be focusing more on the book layout and ways to create our final piece. As we tend to put together a book with all our work in it. I will also be taking some photo’s editing them too. There are so many vintage artists and photographers who i will have to look at and record experiments off. PALAK: Palak will be focusing more on the actual photography it self. She will be editing photo’s and picking out a few high quality ones to use in the final book. She will look at photographers who focus on our theme as well as those who don’t so we have a variety of good photo’s JAMES: James, will contributing his illustration techniques into our project. We will provide him with some photos that myself and Palak would have taken so he can do some illustrations of them. We want to keep colour in the book pale and not too bright so therefore all illustration will be black and white. However if possible we will include some colour versions.

Graphics Collaborative Project Understanding Photoshop i was able to experiment with the photo’s i had taken when i went to oxford street. You can see in the first image that the image is more centred towards the right. Reason being is that it’s on a A3 spread. I set up the paged on Photoshop as it would be easier to work on. Then adding a ruler to the middle (21cm) i was able to find the centre. A quarter of the image is on the first half of the page because it just allowed it to look more neat and contemporary. The next set of images show the steps i worked in. At first it was hard and tricky to the alignment of the images correct but it worked out fine in the end. This is just a rough copy or an experiment of what initially the final might look like. We decided that we will keep text very limited and only on the pages we feel like we should add it. For example the page im working on right now. The left page is pretty much empty so to add something to it, we decided maybe a quote. In the centre of the page most likely as it will balance out and look very chic.

Graphics Collaborative Project These two pages show two different style for our digital book. One is portrait, and one is landscape. In a way it’s more like a photo album rather than a normal old book. We didn’t want to keep the outcome too cliché. So I decided it’s the best one. The layout includes us using more than one image on a page, allowing a lot of space between them so they have their own atmosphere. This way the pages will look sophisticated and organised, rather than a rushed project. Most of the image layout and text idea’s have been inspired by the artists i have researched about. I like the idea of having a single image as a background with 2 or 3 over lapping it. It just makes it look much more contemporary and modern. Which is our aim, even though our theme is vintage.

Graphics Collaborative Project This is initially what we wanted for our vintage theme. The positives about the final is the layout. It is now a lot more elegant and it shouts “vintage unlike before. The colours work well, the pale pink and greys really balance of each other. If i could developed the work on further i would like to add more pages, as i think i want to turn this digital book into a blurb, but in order for that too work i think i need a few more pages rather than just having 16. Also if i get the opportunity to make it better, i would go out to places like south Kensington, Camden, Embankment etc. to take a lot more images of London. As the book now is about the capital city and its glorious architectural buildings. The ancient buildings also really blend into our theme of vintage photography. The final is also successful, i think working in a group has had its downs but it was the only way to see how big artists today work. It was a way for us to combine our ideas together to create something extra-ordinary.

3D Design Beach House I like the way the boxes are repeated as it makes it much more complex. I experimented them in two way. The first images on the right of the model, shows that I laid the boxes in different levels to one another. However the second image, shows that I laid them aligned together. Thinking of the idea of having a view that’s in elements, such as in a framed box, I created a few boxes similar to the image above and structured them across in different ways to experiment and see what potential it has for it to be transformed into a beach house. Here I took the idea of a pull out bed and converted it into a seating area which comes out from the exterior wall. This allows the space to look abstract and ideal for people to relax and socialise in the summer.

Beach House

Development of the first ink drawing.

Taking the idea of shells and wave, I decided to experiment with material and sources to see other possible forms and structures. Here I used Indian ink and a bamboo stick. The process allowed me to repeat and develop lines and create a more urban structure. This again links back to shells. In the first images I used a piece of paper to recreate the forms of an actual shell. I believe it worked well, as it gave me more ideas, also when I placed more layers on top to develop. The outcome of this task shows a structure, that’s roof is much more abstract compared to the overall building.

Thinking of it as a structure for a beach house, I added shell like texture to create a roof. Just another rough idea

First model

3D Design Beach House

Small balcony area on top for the framed view of the ocean ahead.

I replicated the same images over and over, while I changed the colours and temperature of them. This brought my building to another level. It made it more abstract. Experimenting with layers and colours, I developed my idea based on the shell more. Similarly to the image on the right of the shells repeating, I decided to do the same to my model. When I look at it now I can see more potential between the two images. I kept this space more open purposely. Seeing as the exterior of my beach house is a lot more abstract and vivid, I wanted to keep the inside more calm and peaceful to fit with the sea life and natural surrounding. You can see in the plan view, the function of the space. I divided the space with a single wall but kept it fairly open and connected. The kitchen is big and convenient for dinner, and house parties. Also the space will be highlighted with big windows to allow light to travel through and give it the harmony that I want for my model.

3D Design Beach House

Different views of the beach house inspired by Dyer Grimes architects. The space is more open and spacious. I personally love the idea of allowing space to the be the main objective. However I do want to obscure the building. Possibly with the environment and the materials I use. Leaves are perfect to use as an example for natural forms and shapes. No one made them or bent them, they are just naturally the way they are, which makes them much more appealing and interesting to work around. I wanted to include these factors for my beach house. Leaves are a good use of shelter in the rain. They are strong and can withhold the strength of the rain. For my beach house I incorporated the leaf idea as a form of shelter for the house. It will obscure away the building but add more beauty. Also because I plan to have the leaf structures made of glass or of a similar material which can support its structure. I developed my idea. Here I added two leaf like structure to support the exterior of the home. Also the entrance to the roof is based outside rather than the inside. This makes it more open, thus allowing you to connect to nature more freely.

3D Design Beach House

For my final design I’ve included what I found the strongest aspects of each model I made through out the project. This allowed me to make sure I could create the perfect design for my beach house, also to ensure it would be as successful as I aim for it to be in the project. Throughout the model making process I had to make sure I was sticking to my structure plan and it was as accurate as It could get. To sum it all up, I feel as though the final outcome was successful. Reason being it showed how and where from I developed my model, to create the contemporary and abstract beach house. Location wise I believe it would fit perfectly in Southend-on-Sea near the coast line.

3D Design Performance Theatre

In the past when abstract buildings were being constructed, you would notice that most the shapes were linear and basic triangles or even arches. I can see the relation between the shapes created. I took my artist’s technique to turn into a potential design for my chosen building. As you can now see I’ve decided to keep my building simple yet contemporary. Reason why I’ve chosen to work with triangles, is mainly because of their strength and adaptability to hold a structure up no matter its mass. I’ve also done a drawing response using Indian ink. Looking at my structure, I thought it was too simple so I challenged myself to develop it through my drawings. I’ve now linked the shapes together, and added a lot more texture and depth. This will allow my design for a Performance Theatre to be more clear and bold.

3D Design Performance Theatre

The geometric shapes really help emphasis the structure and give it a much better quality. You can see that as a performance theatre it works well and given the climate it blends well. I like the contrast there is between each structure as now there is much more of an urban feel. The windows will mostly fit into the triangular shapes. This way the building will consume more light and energy and also allow the interior too look spacious.

3D Design Performance Theatre

As a development I’ve started to use different materials. I’ve still in co-operated the use of toothpicks into my experiment with glass. To do this, I first broke the glass to get natural forms. After I joined them together to create this building design. You can see now I have added more curvaceous shapes into the form. Glass is a potential material usage in the 21st century for any new building. If you look at the modern architects like Frank Gehry, he uses weird and curvy structures for his buildings and they all work out successfully. Glass is used more purely because of the beauty and benefits behind it. It can help control the weather inside the building as well as allowing light to flow around the space more evenly.

Adaptability Experimenting with natural objects I particularly love the interesting shapes and patterns inside natural objects. For example flowers. We see them as pretty house decorations, however once you look inside more closely there’s a lot more to discover. The shapes and textures of the object allow you too create more complex structures as the inside itself is a lot more defined compared to the exterior. As you can see I took an old rose and painted across the surface with it. As a substitute to a brush the marks left were a lot more interesting. I feel like the experiment allowed me too explore painting in a different level too. I chose to use the two primary colours and white. Purely because the contrast between them is very urban. Meaning it screams new rather than old. Also it’s a very diverse combination of colours and attracts people easily.

Thinking of this as a space I would probably include it into a room. In the performance theatre I want a space where the public can interact artistically. So as a wall design I would include this pattern so it brings the room s vibe up.

Response to Artist

Inspiration

3D Design Performance Theatre I chose to create a similar structure to my previous one but out of a different media. I chose foamboard purely because of its strength compared to paper. Here I have structured the building horizontally so there is more of a definition of space. Although it does feel like there is nothing much going on in the exterior, and around it; I still think that it works well for a contemporary design.

Here the space is only on the ground floor, and therefore not a lot can be added. As I don’t want to overcrowd the interior. Looking back at how spaces influence us, the more spacious the more empty but if its heavily loaded, it can feel claustrophobic. To incorporate the idea of a roof top garden I will add another layer into the structure. This will allow the building to be much more abstract and contemporary. Also linking back to my idea of creating an urban space where you can socialise.

3D Design Perspective Drawing

Perspective in drawing is an approximate representation on a flat surface of an image as it is perceived by the eye. It is the view from a particular viewpoint. Here I have chosen to explore with one and two point perspectives. You can see that drawings like this help give you a more detailed explanation of the space you are looking at. The space is more geometric and make’s it much easier to add changes. These drawings give more depth to the buildings design/interior.

3D Design Performance Theatre Inspired by the Shard and my own model of stacked materials, I chose to create a structure that’s more portrait and linear like the ever so famous Shard. As you can see through my development process I went through a few different designs until I finally hit the perfect one. It’s similarities to the shard is the structure however, instead of a precise layout, I’ve opted to keep the performance theatre more contemporary by different sizes of forms. A significant building in my chosen location will make it a lot more interesting. In contrast to the Pioneer Point just 5 minutes away; I think the building will give Ilford a whole new identity. The building will have sections made of glass so that it gives the visitors on public transport a view of what’s inside to attract them in, also glass is a statement material being using in so many designs around the world by famous architects.

What really stands out in the structure is that the main performance hall will be in the centre where the structure is at its strongest point. Right above that is the restaurant. Its both designed to be inside, and have an exterior space to allow people to get a good view over the town.
