Each stage of the journey culminates in a boss battle, during which everyone needs to work together in order to progress to the next section. There are more than 80 mini games to take part in, and because all players move simultaneously, nobody is left out of the action.

et ready for a darker, edgier Ninja Gaiden as Ryu Hayabusa becomes a true Japanese dark hero. Tasked with making questionable decisions for the greater good, Ryu must stop a mysterious attacker who has demanded the world’s immediate surrender. While previous Ninja Gaiden games have been sparse in plotline, Ninja Gaiden 3 promises to bring a new mix of visceral combat and deep, emotional storytelling that will “unmask” Hayabusa and reveal his true self. The series is definitely taking on a more real-world tone this time around, with Hayabusa working alongside the UN in order to stop this threat. You’ll visit locations like London and Dubai, and face off against militarised human opponents. While on the surface it appears as if the game might have forsaken its supernatural overtones, Team Ninja has promised that it hasn’t abandoned that series staple for Ninja Gaiden 3. Ryu has new moves at his disposal, like wall climbing thanks to the Kunai Climb technique, and one-shot stealth takedowns. Familiar combat mechanics such as Ultimate Technique and Ninpo attacks will make a return. Gameplay will stick to Ninja Gaiden roots with an emphasis on tight, polished combat and bloody gore. While tough-as-nails difficulty levels have been the hallmark of the Ninja Gaiden franchise, this time around Team Ninja is making things just a little more accessible for newcomers to the series. Fans of the earlier games will be catered for by a Hard difficulty setting, so don’t think the series has been defanged just yet. New to the series is the addition of multiplayer, with online, free-for-all deathmatches between eight players, and four-versus-four team deathmatches on offer. You’ll be able to customise your character’s appearance from the colour of your outfit to the different tools at your disposal. Developer Team Ninja has put a lot of work into making the combat feel more real, and they’ve approached the project’s fighting mechanics with a “steel on bone” mindset so that players will “feel like they’re cutting into a human, into flesh and bone”. PlayStation 3 owners can look forward to Move support because, as Team Ninja clearly wants to emphasis, “Ninja Gaiden 3 is all about slicing and chopping through flesh and bone and PlayStation Move brings players even closer to the game’s protagonist Ryu Hayabusa”. Needless to say this is a game you’re going to want to keep hidden from your mom; or if you’re a mom into gaming, then this is a game you’re going to want to keep hidden from your kids!

ommander Shepard’s trilogy reaches its climax as the sentient race of spaceships known as the Reapers invade Earth, threatening to wipe out humanity from the galaxy. At last, all of your imported decisions from the previous two Mass Effect games will play out to their completion as Shepard assembles a crew for an all-or-nothing defence against the biggest threat the galaxy has ever faced. Mass Effect 3 continues the tradition of cinemastyle storytelling with immersive gameplay, character customisation and meaningful player decisions. New to the game’s already star-studded voice cast is Freddie Prinze Junior who plays newcomer soldier James Vega. Additionally, videogame website IGN’s Jessica Chobot, will take on the role of Diana Allers, a news reporter who will come into contact with Shepard at some point during the game. Of course, most gamers know what normally happens to nosy reporters who get on the wrong side of Shepard, so hopefully Chobot wore protective headgear while doing the motion capture for Mass Effect 3. On top of the hours and hours of single-player gaming, Mass Effect 3 will include multiplayer for the first time in the franchise. This isn’t some tacked-on addition that BioWare produced for the sake of it; multiplayer will affect the course of your single-player game as well. It’s been promised that multiplayer will not, however, be required for a “complete” single-player experience. For those picking up Mass Effect 3 on Xbox 360, you can look forward to Kinect integration as well. You’ll be able to control your squad mates in combat by using your voice (you’ll literally shout commands to your team in the middle of a firefight) and you’ll be able to read aloud your dialogue options during interactions with NPC characters.

rom the studio that brought you the Persona series of JRPGs (Japanese Role Playing Games) comes Catherine, a bizarre mixture of Japanese dating simulator and horrorthemed puzzle platforming. Players take on the role of Vincent, a regular chap who’s dating a woman named Katherine. When his lady mentions the idea of marriage, however, Vincent begins to have strange nightmares involving pillows, climbing boxes and sheep. Then, when Vincent meets the drop-dead gorgeous Catherine, his morals are under assault and these nightmares of his ramp up to the next level. The game is split into two main components: daytime and nightmare. During the day, Vincent will spend most of his time hanging out at the Stray Sheep Bar. There, Vincent will chat to customers, order drinks, send and receive text messages to and from both ladies in his life, and partake in a mini-game called Rapunzel. At night, everything changes. Vincent must climb his way up giant mountains of blocks, dodging traps and other perils, and avoiding or destroying the deadly sheep that are out to kill him. The faster Vincent climbs up the blocks, the higher his score multiplier gets.

With a whole suite of new online features as well as the most robust Shot Setup system to date, there is plenty of new content for returning fans, and tons more for those new to the series. New online features include the ability to form your own Country Clubs. Once created you’ll be able to issue memberships to your online friends, formulate teams and take on other players’ Online Country Clubs in multiplayer competitions. Working with your Country Club members, you’ll be able to pool your skills in order to unlock further courses and competitions at a much faster rate than usual. The new Shot Setup mechanic enables you to swap between draw and fade shots by shifting feet position, and alter the launch trajectory by moving the ball forwards or backwards. Add to this the new Strike Meter, which allows you to pinpoint the exact position on the ball where the club will make contact, and you’ve got a system that allows for up to 62 million shot varieties on a single golf club. If that’s still not enough, you can drop your controller completely and utilise Kinect for Xbox 360 instead.

departure from the core series of Resident Evil games, Operation Raccoon City is a third-person shooter that forgoes survival horror in place of action. The game takes place around the same time as Resident Evil 2 and 3, and for a change will see players take on the role of an officer in the Umbrella Secret Service – a division of the pharmaceutical company responsible for keeping Umbrella’s viral outbreak a secret. The game features six playable characters: Vector the recon/stealth expert; Beltway the explosives guy; Bertha the medic; Spectre the sharpshooter; Four Eyes, the scientist who can program bio-organic weapons (BOWs – Resident Evil’s “zombies”); and the team leader Lupo. In addition, there will be a four-player co-op mode available which pits the USS against the US Spec Ops task force. Players will have to deal with a number of BOWs including the classic zombies, Hunters, Lickers and Tyrants. If the BOWs get too close and manage to infect the player, their character will initially be invisible to BOWs and will eventually turn on their own teammates.

he long-awaited next game in the massively popular Diablo series is finally almost upon us. It’s been in beta for a good six months to fine-tune the game mechanics and ensure that it’s the Diablo that everyone’s been waiting for. The story of Diablo III continues from the previous games, and once-again returns to the fantasy world of Sanctuary. Tristram has been rebuilt a short distance from its previous location and populated with merchants and tradesmen who feed off the constant supply of travellers and adventurers who pass through. All is going well until a giant star falls from the sky and crashes into the old Tristram Cathedral. Suddenly, the dead are walking the lands again and Tristram needs saving. There’s much more at stake than a simple army of the undead, however; the falling star is just the first stage in a prophecy that spells the end of Sanctuary, unless another brave hero steps up to save the day. Diablo III boasts a new 3D engine, restructured RPG mechanics and five playable character classes: the witch doctor, the barbarian, the wizard, the monk, and the demon hunter. Each offers a unique style of play, mixing melee combat, ranged combat and spell-casting. Players can also team up with human or AI-controlled NPCs.
