he third title in THQ’s popular mixed martial arts series brings a number of tweaks and additions that promise to make it the best in the series yet. There’s a new submission system with new moves like the standing rear naked choke, as well as the use of motion capture to give certain fighters more realistic movement and strikes. A few new statistical values have been added for combatants, like footwork and ground grapple top/bottom for offense and defence. Featherweight and Bantamweight divisions will now feature, and the number of real-world fighters you can expect to see in the game’s roster is over 150. Fighters like Brock Lesnar, Tito Ortiz, Cain Velasquez and the legendary Royce Gracie will all star in the game. Other changes to the actual gameplay include: a new stamina system; stat decay has been removed from the career mode; fighters can now sway on the ground to dodge strikes; sweeps return with new additions; a new feint system; “Finish the Fight” allows you to continue striking until the ref pulls you off your opponent; and stamina depletion will now affect a fighter’s stats.

inal Fantasy fans generally agree that FFXIII was a little less than perfect. This is a direct sequel to XIII. Familiar characters like Snow Villiers and Hope Estheim will make a return alongside a host of new playable characters, including Lightning’s younger sister Serah Farron who teams up with a time traveller named Noel Kreiss. A number of technical and gameplay improvements have been made to rectify complaints made about the previous game as well as those from the series in general. Most notably, the game will feature significant amounts of nonlinear gameplay through its time-travelling elements, as well as quest hubs for those who enjoy taking their time speaking to villagers and exploring the worlds. Updates to the combat system have been made as well, including a variation of the Active Time Battle (ATB) system and Paradigm Shift, and the ability to capture and tame wild animals for use in battle.

et between the events of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, Operation Racoon City will see players taking on the task of an Umbrella Security Service (USS) cleanup duty squad. Players will need to deal with all aspects of the famous zombie outbreak, containing escaped specimens and dispatching innocent civilians and law enforcement officials alike. Among those law enforcement officers will be Leon Kennedy, one of the main characters from Resident Evil 2 and 4. As an action game, Operation Racoon City will depart from the series’ survival horror roots to give players a more intense, combat-oriented experience that includes support for four-player coop gameplay in a special USS VS. US Spec Ops game mode. Each of the six playable characters will have a speciality, such as Vector’s recon and stealth abilities, Beltway’s explosives skills, Bertha’s allimportant medic abilities and Spectre’s sharpshooting talents. Players can expect the usual array of zombies from the series, as well as Bio-Organic Weapons (BOWs) such as the Hunters, Lickers and Tyrants. During specific parts of the game, players will also have the ability to control these undead creatures.

ith a single-player story set in the near future that takes place in locations like Norway, the Middle East and Asia, the elite team of operatives known as the Ghosts will take on an ultranationalist force that took control of Russia and have begun invading neighbouring countries. Future Soldier sees you taking control of a fourman team of Ghosts consisting of a commando, sniper, recon expert and an engineer. It’s primarily a third-person shooter, but will switch to a first-person view when aiming down the sights or hiding behind cover to provide better aim. Features like optical camouflage (which allows the Ghosts to become invisible to enemies, but has a few disadvantages like extremely limited use) and the ability to control drones will be in the game. Cover is destructible, forcing you to constantly adapt and change positions on the fly. Kinect support for Xbox 360 can be used with the extensive weapon customization feature, allowing you to use gestures and voice control to modify your arsenal. Players using Kinect will also be able to use gestures in-game: firing weapons, for example, is done by opening your hand and then closing it.

et 17 years after the events of Soul Calibur IV, this next title in the long-running fighting series will see a number of improvements, both visual and technical, to give fans of the series something to look forward to. While the core fighting system remains, a number of changes have been made including the removal of Critical Finishes and the Soul Gauge. Now, a more conventional gauge has been added that is charged during combat, and is used to execute Brave Edge and Critical Edge attacks – progressively more powerful super moves that consume energy on the gauge. There will also be an updated Guard Impact system that is more difficult to perform but is able to repel any unblockable attack, regardless of height. A range of new and returning characters alike will make the roster, and character customization has been extended to allow for more body type, voice, move list and clothing selection.

asily one of this year’s biggest and most important games is Diablo III. It’s once again up to a new generation of heroes to save the world of Sanctuary from the armies of The Burning Hells, with the old heroes of Diablo II having gone mad in the 20 years that have passed since this game’s predecessor. While it’ll be instantly familiar to series fans, it brings with it a number of interesting changes to the proven formula. In order to improve replayability, the quest system has been enhanced, levels are randomly generated and there are random encounters and set pieces that are generated as you progress. There’ll be class-specific quests for each of the five character classes (Witch Doctor, Barbarian, Wizard, Monk and Demon Hunter) in addition to the main story quests. Skill Runes can be used to augment class skills, often completely changing the effect of that skill or at least increasing its power.
