DON PERIGNON (PUERTO RICO): Date: Saturday, February 9th Rhythm: SALSA As the tireless bandleader and timbalero of La Orquesta Puertorriquena, Don Perignon is one of the foremost exponents of big-band Salsa in his native Puerto Rico. In 2004, the high-octane powerhouse celebrated 20 years of music with Don Perignon Presenta a la Orquesta Puertorriquena: 20th Aniversario. NEW SWING SEXTET (NEW YORK): Date: Sunday, February 10th Rhythm: SALSA The band was to become very popular in the United States and Latin America, including the Caribbean, as exponents of an innovative new sound that emerged in the mid-60s known as Latin Boogaloo. Though the New Swing currently has 7 members, when the group first got together it was composed of 6 members (popularly called “Sextet”). During that era (1960s), so many young musicians growing up in New York were exposed and influenced by the Latin Boogaloo (which was in term related to the cha-cha-cha and guajira rhythms). During the boogaloo’s peak years of popularity, there was also a slight decline in the popularity of mambo and salsa. But the young new bands of that era such as: Willie Colon, Johnny Colon, Ricardo Ray and the Joey Pastrana Orchestra, as well as the New Swing Sextet, were responsible for creating a young fresh, joyful yet rebellious sound 5

Birdland announces the new Latin Live Jazz Shows this February The famous Latin Jazz’s Nightclub brings to their stage four renowned artists of the New York Jazz scene to present their biggest hits during this month Birdland kicks off the New Latin Live Jazz Shows with ARTURO O'FARRILL, a modern composer and pianist. He combines European harmony and instruments with those from India, Africa, and the Caribbean to bring a never heard ensemble sound to bear. “Resist” comprises a weaving together of different influences into a new fabric, partly rough-textured, but with an internal dialogue that honors of each musical idea. There is the combination of flute (Alejandro Aviles) and tuba (Earl McIntyre) - two ends of the tonal and pitch spectrum, in duet with one another plus trumpet (Adam O'Farrill). Sometimes they play the same notes, only octaves apart, and sometimes in counterpoint with one another. Latin percussion (Carlos "Carly" Maldonado) combines with African drums (Neil Clarke) and drum set (Zack O'Farrill), held together by the bassist Bambam Rodriguez. Special guest slam poet Baba Israel is also featured.

Edwin El Calvito Reyes Tócale la moña 2019 Edwin “El Calvito” Reyes, nació un 19 de Abril de 1974, tuvo su niñez y se graduó de la Escuela Superior Vocacional de su amado Trujillo Alto en Mayo de 1992. Luego se graduó con estudios en Tele-Comunicación en la Universidad del Sagrado Corazón de P.R. Desde niño, la música ha sido su pasión. Ya después de graduado, Edwin siguió mostrando su liderazgo y pasión por la música, y ya en el 1993, Edwin, comenzó a darse a conocer, al llevar su plena por todo el pueblo, y manteniendo nuestra cultura y tradición viva. En el año 1996, Edwin se unió al ejército estadounidense y comenzó a tocar y cantar salsa, Todo ello, gracias al Sr. Víctor París y al Sr. Godreau "Papo Salsa" quienes le ofrecieron la primera oportunidad de compartir su talento con la comunidad de Hinesville, Ga en 1996. Estoy emocionado por unirme a gigantes de la música clásica comoLeonard Bernstein, Maria Callas, Arturo Toscanini y tantos otros que abrieron el camino para la aceptación pública de la música clásica. Who could imagine that a child from a working class family in Barquisimeto could be standing here today on the Hollywood Walk of Fame as the first Venezuelan to receive a star? I am humbled to be joining the ranks of classical music giants such as Leonard Bernstein, Maria Callas, Arturo Toscanini, and so many others who paved the way for the public acceptance of classical music.

NAHITI ORTEGA, es una venezolana con un talento excepcional, más de 25 años como ejecutante de las danzas tradicionales venezolanas, esta vez International Salsa Magazine tiene el privilegio de conversar con esta artista de talla internacional. Inició sus estudios de Danza en los talleres de Cultura Popular de la Fundación Bigott, tomando clases en las diferentes regiones del país. También realiza cursos de otras danzas internacionales como: africanas, colombianas, cubanas, argentinas, dominicanas, bolivianas, brasileras, chilenas, entre otros. Amplía sus conocimientos tomando otros talleres de accesorios para la danza, expresión corporal, rítmica, análisis de la danza, teoría de la cultura popular, elementos anti estrés de la música y el canto, técnica vocal, maquillaje artístico, diseño de vestuario escénico, organización de eventos especiales, imagen corporativa, tradición en línea, formación de teleformadores, recursos pedagógicos de un aula virtual: moodle entre otros. 22

Augusto: ¿Qué significa para ti la danza en lo personal? Nahití: La Danza es vida… La vida comienza con una danza, desde que somos concebidos, danzamos cuando un niño está dentro del vientre de su madre, cuando la tierra gira sobre su propio eje, cuando las olas del mar llegan a la orilla, cuando el viento sopla y mueve las hojas de los árboles… en todos esos movimientos se produce una hermosa danza, así como la vida misma. “El Baile tiene tanta importancia que los héroes celestiales crearon el mundo con el poder de la danza, y toda la tierra es la obra mágica de los primeros bailarines. La propia existencia de los seres humanos es el resultado del baile. Por eso, bailar es asegurar la continuación de la existencia” (Morela Maneiro) Para mí la danza es una forma de vida que me conecta con lo más profundo de mí ser y me deja desnudarme y mostrarme tal como soy. Mis movimientos son la expresión física de todo lo intangible que me pasa. Al moverme pongo en evidencia la relación que tengo conmigo misma y con mi entorno. Augusto: ¿Existe o existió alguna guía que te inspiró a este arte? Nahití: Mi padre siempre ha sido mi inspiración y mi guía; desde pequeña siempre quise bailar, un día él me preguntó, ¿de verdad quieres bailar? y le dije que sí, fue entonces él quien me llevara de la mano a estudiar danza e introducirme este maravilloso mundo. A lo largo de mi carrera he tenido increíbles maestros, el cual debo mencionar al Profesor Freddy Medina quien por su disciplina, exigencia y dedicación aprendí a diferenciar y ejecutar gran parte de nuestras danzas tradicionales y a Omar Orozco quien me enseño que la danza, más allá de ser interpretada, nos sirve para la vida misma.

A lo largo de mi carrera he tenido muchas anécdotas te puedo contar algunas: Una de las que recuerdo en este momento fue en una presentación con el Maestro Cheo Hurtado donde me tocaba mostrar la diferencia en la ejecución de los Joropos Venezolanos, al llegar al camerino y sacar el vestuario me percaté de que tenía dos zapatos del mismo pie, es decir; tenía dos zapatos derechos, te podrás imaginar mi cara susto, después de esto me dio un ataque de risa y mi amiga Rossmary Rondón, también bailarina, viendo la situación y mi reacción, me preguntó que si estaba loca, que ¿por qué me reía? y yo le respondí “porque igual tengo que resolver y no hago nada con molestarme”. Finalmente bailé con mis dos zapatos iguales y nadie se percató de ese detalle sólo lo sabíamos ella y yo. Y todo salió bien. Otra fue en una larga gira por Asia, nos encontrábamos en Corea y realizamos 3

presentaciones diarias, recuerdo que en la tercera del día hacíamos el baile del mono, en este pieza invitamos al público a incorporarse, en la interpretación nos lanzábamos al suelo y después no nos podíamos parar rápidamente por el cansancio y nos daba mucha risa, el público debía actuar por imitación y como no sabían lo que estaba ocurriendo, terminaban contagiándose con nuestra la risa. Augusto: ¿Tu padre fue influencia en tu trabajo? Nahití: Indudablemente sí, admiro muchísimo a mi padre, es un gran artista uno de los mejores en su estilo, siempre ha sido referencia en el ámbito musical, he aprendido que con disciplina, constancia, dedicación y amor por lo que haces se pueden alcanzar las metas propuestas, mi padre en la actualidad tiene más de 50 años de trayectoria artística, ininterrumpidos, lo cual demuestra que su fórmula funciona. Augusto: Háblanos un poco de tu carrera como docente Nahití: En mis clases suelo enseñar la procedencia de la danza a trabajar, los principales movimientos corporales, pasos básicos y secuencias coreográficas, dependiendo del nivel, así como la respiración y la preparación física para cada danza. También introduzco al alumno en la búsqueda personal para que pueda conseguir su propio estilo y proyección. Nahití: Me gusta estimular mentalmente a los integrantes, creamos un mundo entre todos con algunas características y reglas. Para mí, cada cuerpo tiene una historia que contar, cada uno tiene movimientos particulares adquiridos a través de sus vivencias que puede aportar, de modo que trato de encontrar la formas en la que los integrantes puedan identificarse con la motivación, he involucrarse y se sientan con ganas de proponer. Lo que busco es encontrar durante el proceso, movimientos que se adapten a lo que me planteo. También me gusta trabajar mucho la memoria muscular a través de la repetición, para lograr que los movimientos no sean robóticos. Trabajamos profundamente, la gestualidad y la puesta en escena es importante que cada uno saque y proyecte su estilo personal. Augusto: ¿Tienes Proyectos a futuro? Inicia sus actividades en el ámbito de la Cultura Popular participando en la Agrupación la Patria y su Gente dirigido por el Profesor Freddy Medina durante tres años; en el año 1994 participa como invitada especial de la Agrupación Autóctono de la Vega en el “Festival de Barcelos”, pertenecientes al circuito de CIOF - UNESCO, en los países Portugal y España. En el año 1995 ingresa a la agrupación con Venezuela dirigido por el Profesor Oswaldo Lares en el cual trabajó durante cuatro años, participando en el “Festival del Caribe 95” en las ciudades de Cancún, Cuzumel, Playa El Carmen, Estado de Quintana Roo - México, en el año 1996 realiza el taller de percusión afro-venezolana en los talleres de cultura Popular de la Fundación Bigott dictado por el profesor Jesús Paiva, con una duración de tres años. Participó como bailarina en el videoclip de Oscar D´ León “Mírala Como se Menea”, así como en la película Venezolana “Juegos bajo la Luna”, dirigida por Mauricio Walerstein. En el área docente, ha impartido talleres de danza tradicionales a nivel nacional e internacional. Así como también de accesorios para la danza, expresión corporal, Bailoterapia, indumentaria, maquillaje básico para escenario, maquillaje artístico, puesta en escena, entre otros. Entre las instituciones en la cual ha impartido talleres podemos mencionar algunas tales como: Talleres de Cultura Popular de la Fundación Bigott - Venezuela Universidad de las Artes en Lima – Perú. Universidad Simón Rodríguez. Núcleo Barquisimeto -Venezuela Ha realizado trabajos como bailarina, coreógrafa, asesora de imagen y productora para diversas agrupaciones. En el año 1993 ingresa a la agrupación “Vasallos del Sol” de la Fundación Bigott bajo la dirección del Profesor Omar Orozco. En el 2000 ingresa a Danzas Itanera, como bailarina, diseñadora de vestuario y asesora de imagen de la agrupación. Ha compartido escenario con artistas como: Serenata Guayanesa, Un Solo Pueblo, Francisco Pacheco y su pueblo, Simón Díaz, Cruz Tenepe, Vidal Colmenares, Cristóbal Jiménez, Gurrufio, El cuarteto, Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil de Caracas, Orquesta de Cámara de las Fuerzas Armadas, Coco y Su Sabor Matancero, Oscar de León, Guaco, Amigos Invisibles, Aquiles Báez entre otros. Ha recorrido todo el territorio nacional presentándose en innumerables escenario con participación en festivales Internacionales. En el año 2009 participó como bailarina y tallerista en el X Encuentro para la promoción y difusión del patrimonio inmaterial de los países Iberoamericanos “Fiestas y Rituales” en Lima, Perú. El Alma de la cultura Latinoamericana ¿Sabías que la Salsa, Merengue y Lambada son ritmos que se han disfrutado en la última década? Bueno, este vínculo que los unen es la energía y la pasión por la vida, expresándose en la música, mostrándose en el romance de las parejas bailando en armonía y con la danza los une más aún de forma sentimental como de compañerismos. Estos ritmos nacieron de un ambiente muy urbano, donde cada bailarín puede mostrar su personalidad en el movimiento de manera libre, no obstantes, siguiendo ciertas normas que tiene cada género, donde puede uno seguir cada paso y técnica o hacerlo de forma espontáneo. Por ejemplo: * Nunca usar el mismo pie 2 veces, debe ser intercalado (derecho, izquierdo, derecho…). * Baile con su pareja como espejo, es decir si usted se va a la derecha, su compañero(a) va hacia la izquierda. * Transferencia del peso de un pie a otro a medida que se realizan los pasos.

La salsa es un ritmo que tiene originen de la síntesis del son cubano y otros géneros de música caribeña, con el jazz y otros ritmos estadounidense. Uno de los principales contribuyentes vienen de las rumbas africanas junto con la cumbia, el guaguancó, la guajira, son cubano, el mambo, e son montuno, el cha cha cha, entre otros. Se puede decir que la salsa es uno de los ritmos más importantes de la industria musical donde tiene muchas características de sus contribuyentes, por ejemplo, la “salsa” es cercana al “mambo” debido a los pasos ejecutados en conteos de ocho, sus movimientos y patrones son singulares, sin embargo, es un baile de lado a lado con diferentes giros. 28

El Merengue tiene su origen de República Dominicana y tiene un grado enorme de popularidad en la zona del caribe, es un ritmo lento que aumenta su velocidad al finalizar el baile, es similar al bolero pero se baile más que todo en grupos que con una pareja. Los secreto del baile se basa en la transferencia del peso de un pie a otro, donde cada género latino tiene una característica que los diferencia, el mejor ejemplos es la semejanza que todos creen que tiene la “salsa” con el “merengue” , donde la salsa tiene 4 tiempos, donde el primer tiempo se toca ligeramente el piso con la punta de pie de forma rápida, la cual es conocida como “TAP” y se repite este mismo en cuatro “4” y ocho “8”, en cambio el merengue no existe este “TAP” solo es de 2 tiempos, es un ritmo constante, muy sencillo, cuya rapidez de los pasos viene marcada por el ritmo musical.

Se propagó primero Bahía, Europa, Japón, USA y Medio-Oriente. Actualmente se baila en clubs nocturnos y de baile, desde su creación han evolucionado sus giros de jiv, merengue, rumba, incluso de sevillanas y maniobras de acrobacia. Es una baile de 3 tiempos (rápido - lento – rápido) donde el primer paso se da con el primer tiempo de la música, el segundo es el movimiento de uno de los 2 sentidos y el tercero es el traslado del peso de regreso al centro moviendo la pierna más despacio. Este baile se baila con todo el cuerpo, las mujeres bailan de punta, flexionan las rodillas y el tronco se mueven en dirección opuesta a la parte inferior del cuerpo, si la cadera gira en un dirección la caja torácica gira en dirección opuesta. Pero ambos géneros tienen que tener en el baile un movimiento de cadera, hombros y posición de las manos que los caracteriza marcando la sensualidad de los ritmos latinos. La “Lambada, un género brasileñoth que se originó de los pequeños cafés y bares que provino de la danza de garrafa, se creen que fue producto de los ritmos como el “Carimbo” y el “Merengue” con influencias traídas del “Forro” y la “Samba” por lo que tiene muchas influencias de la música del Caribe, pero la melodía es la combinación de tambores caribeños, metales y guitarras eléctricas con un toque adicional de elementos españoles y el sabor de los indígenas locales.

What's so special about a Salsa Marathon? A dance marathon concentrates, as the name implies, on dancing. A concept of an event that emerged from the tango scene and spreads quickly in the Salsa scene. Non-stop dancing from start to finish. No shows, no workshops that interrupt, but just dancing! Whether you dance the whole day or just throughout the day or evening, you choose your times and breaks, just as you like best. The marathon starts on Friday evening and lasts until the early morning hours. Immediately after the brunch, the afternoon continues directly until the next morning.
