Hello friends and family and, most importantly, hello 2017! What a year it’s been here at Beyond The Stage. We’ve had some of our biggest issues yet, including some of our favorite interviews such as LANY, Nothing But Thieves and Jordan Fisher, just to name a few. It’s hard to believe all of the things we were able to take you along for this year - from The 1975 having one of the biggest album releases to date to seeing Zayn Malik officially heading off on his own. We’ve had a blast putting together this very special issue of our Best of 2016 picks. From single releases to the biggest technical tour productions of the year, we made sure to talk about it all. The team we’ve built this past year has done some incredible work - all with you, our readers, in mind. We’re continuing to build our team into the best it can be, and we’re so excited to be able to take you guys along. It’s been an incredible year at Beyond The Stage and we’re looking forward to everything that’s to come in 2017. So stay tuned, friends. It’s going to be a special one. Enjoy! Tove Lo: BTS: You just put out your second album, Lady Wood, what was that process like for that one versus the second one? TL: Well it’s kind of like how they say you have your whole life to write your first album and then you only have a few months to write your second one. But I, after finishing Jingle Ball last year, I had maybe a week off and then I went straight into the studio and started writing and putting together the demos I have. I write a lot when I’m on tour, just like small demos and stuff, so I kind of just put together what I had in the studio and went into a bubble with my producers and turned myself inside out and put all of my emotions on paper. It was a very, people talk about the second album angst, but I kind of feel like it wasn’t hard to write, but it was really emotional and intense. It kind of just flowed, I had a great flow. BTS: Who are you obsessing over music wise right now? TL: I’m obsessing over, I love The Weeknd’s new album, Trove Sivan, Alessia Cara, I think she’s absolutely amazing. Who else? Justice’s new album, a lot. I stand for the music I listen to. BTS: What’s next for you in 2017? TL: I’m starting my next tour in the states in February. I’m rehearsing in January. I’m shooting the next chapter for my album Lady Wood, Fire Fade. What else am I doing? Festivals and a lot of announcements!

Backstreet Boys BTS: You guys have some of the most dedicated fans in the world, what do you want to say to your fans? AJ: That we are forever grateful. Nick: That we love them, we love them. We have a great fanbase, they’re passionate, we’re passionate about them. We’ve had a great relationship with them for the past 24 years. Kevin: They keep us coming back. Nick: They’re a great army.

BTS: What’s it like being on the Jingle Ball tour?

BTS: What’s next for you guys in 2017? What can we look forward to?

LG: It’s been amazing, we’d do this every year. It’s an amazing way to end the year, we’ve been so busy and this is kind of relaxed and we get to meet a few of the other artists. It’s a little more relaxing because it’s a shorter show, so we get to have a little bit more fun and be a little bit more loose.

LG: Touring, touring, touring. Seeing more countries. We’re going to Japan and playing there, we’re going to Greenland. We’ve got a lot of plans, we just can’t keep up!

BTS: Who are your musical influences right now? LG: Right now, we’re listening to a lot of Anderson .Paak. We’ve also been digging back to some Jim Morrison and Oasis, The Beatles, but definitely a lot of Oasis. But our musical catalogue is so big that we keep digging back and forth in time. Mark, you’re very much one of the guys who brings in newer music. Magnus and I kind of dig back to the oldies but goodies. BTS: Are you guys obsessing over any of the Jingle Ball artists? LG: I have to say I went into the audience for Tove Lo and we saw a bit of Diplo, MØ, Bruno Mars, we saw him when he was

Daya BTS: Your album just came out and it got a huge amount of support, so what was that like? Daya: It’s so cool! It’s something that I’ve been working on for the past couple of years with my co-writers and it’s an amazing feeling to have people be supportive of your work and relate to your songs. I’ve had so many people reach out to me and say that my album helped them, which is like the greatest thing ever to hear. BTS: Who are you obsessing over music wise? Daya: 2016 as a whole would be Chance The Rapper, I loved his album. I still bump it to this year. I think he is an incredible songwriter. BTS: Next for 2016, headlining tour, but are you going to continue to create content? Daya: I’m definitely pushing “Words,” my single, and a music video for that. Creating content always, hopefully new music in the new year. Everyone should stay tuned!

For our Best of 2016, we had a tough time narrowing the lists down. All of our staff here at Beyond The Stage voted our favorites for each of the categories and these are the results! 2016 was a great year for music, especially music comebacks. Our “Top Rock” category featured many artists that had been away for some time -- Blink-182, Green Day and Weezer just to name a few. We even featured a “Best Comeback” category that included Frank Ocean and A Tribe Called Quest too. Some big names were featured in our “Top Rap/Hip-Hop,” like Chance The Rapper, Drake and Kanye. This past year was a big one for Kanye, The Life Of Pablo was a huge success and in addition to “Top Rap/Hip-Hop” he appears on our best “Live Performance” and “Album of the Year” lists. Kanye wasn’t the only one with a huge year though, The 1975 also landed a spot on three of our lists. They claimed “Top Pop,” “Live Performance,” and “Album of the Year.” 2016 was also good to Beyonce, who also appeared on the same three lists for Lemonade. The top spots in “Top Country” were no surprise, including country superstars, Miranda Lambert and Keith Urban. Bon Iver, Modern Baseball and Two Door Cinema Club had a good year as well. They landed on our “Top Indie” list with their releases of 2016. We hope that you see some of your favorites on the list!

TOP ROCK

1. Panic! At The Disco, Death of Ramen

a Bachelor - Fueled By

Who says one of the first releases of the year can’t still be one of the best by the end? Panic! At The Disco continue to transcend movements in music and stay at the forefront of relevance with their latest album, Death of a Bachelor. Frontman Brendon Urie shows up anybody trying to make it in the pop, alternative and even jazz scenes by combining all of them at once and completely changing the game. And there’s a certain unity call within most of the songs on the album getting lost in the bright lights of LA, understanding who are as “a bachelor” and what happens once that dies. The emo boys of your dreams are back, ladies and gentlemen, and they easily slayed the entirety of 2016. - Madeline Shiffer

2. Blink 182, California – BMG California is the seventh studio album from Blink-182, the first without Tom DeLonge and with Matt Skiba. The return to their classic pop-punk sound got the band their first Grammy nomination for Best Rock Album. California is full of songs reflecting on where the band came from with tracks like “San Diego” referencing the relationship between the band and DeLonge then up the coast to “Los Angeles,” the band’s now adopted hometown. But it was the first single off the album, “Bored to Death,” that quickly became one of the more memorable songs on the radio this summer with it’s catchy chorus. Skiba held his own with his vocals and with writing some of the more memorable lines on the album, giving hope to the future of this band that was arguably questionable before this release. For most fans, this album was confirmation that the loss of one member was not a loss of Blink as a whole. - Marissa Sandoval

3. Green Day, Revolution Radio - Reprise Records What do you get when you take one of the biggest punk bands of our time, give them a hiatus and then drop them in 2016? By our calculations, you get Green Day’s Revolution Radio. The band took over the scene yet again after four years without a full release, and they came back with a vengeance. Green Day know how to

stay true to themselves, but they’re also incredibly sharp when it comes to keep up with what is selling across the years. Revolution Radio connects with fans who have only heard the stories of the influence Green Day had on the 90’s punk scene, and also with those fans who were lucky enough to be in the pit from day one. Thanks for sticking with us, Green Day, and for keeping us rocking. - Madeline Shiffer

4. Radiohead, A Moon Shaped Pool – XL Recordings Rock legends Radiohead released their ninth studio album, A Moon Shaped Pool in May of this year, stunning listeners around the world with their sound. Although fans of Radiohead were expecting a release sometime in 2016, the album wasn’t promoted before its release. Tracks like “Daydreaming,” showing the quieter side of Thom Yorke and co, with melodic piano, while tracks like “Ful Stop” show Radiohead’s ability to progress within their sound.Including singles like “Burn The Which” and “Daydreaming,” the album reached the top of dozens of Best of 2016 lists, earning it number 73 on the Billboard 200, number 28 in the UK, but ultimately peaking at number 1 on the US Top Rock Albums in 2016. – Addie Whelan

5. Weezer, Weezer (White Album) - Atlantic Records Weezer’s 2016 self-titled album, alternatively known as the White Album, reached serious critical acclaim and ultimately ended in Weezer receiving a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Album. The album’s style and lyrics perfectly embody Los Angeles. The rocking single “Thank God For Girls” is the perfect radio hit that you can find anyone jamming too. Not only did the album produce great radio hits but “Endless Bummer,” the last song on the album, transitions from a uniquely quiet acoustic track to a full-fledged rock song ending with a crazy solo. The mix of styles and the signature Weezer sound gives this album the title of one of the best rock albums of the year. - Alyssa Buzzello

TOP RAP / HIP-HOP 1. Kanye West - The Life of

Pablo, G.O.O.D. Music

In February, Kanye West held a mysterious fashion show at Madison Square Garden and unleashed his latest album, The Life of Pablo, that same day. Released as a streaming exclusive, West made edits to the album in real time in the months following its release. The unconventional release tactics are not the only thing that set the forward-thinking album apart, however. The album’s marriage of hip hop, gospel, and funk set a precedent for other artists break genre norms as well. Packed with moments of triumph, spirituality, depression, and confidence, The Life of Pablo is an engaging body of work that takes listeners into West’s brain. Spawning infectious hits such as “Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1” and “Famous,” the album is sure to be in rotation for years to come. - Charlotte Freitag

2. Chance The Rapper - Coloring Book, Independent In 2016, Chance The Rapper was transformed from an underground hero to a mainstream sensation. His rapid rise to fame was largely due to his appearance on Kanye West’s track “Ultralight Beam,” and his status as hip hop’s most intriguing new voice was cemented with the release of his free album Coloring Book. Characterized by the marriage of gospel and hip hop, Coloring Book is one of the most forward-thinking hip hop releases of the year. Chance’s boundless energy shines through on each of the tracks, bringing the album to life. The album is as much an ode to Chance’s hometown of Chicago as it is to joy and positivity. - Charlotte Freitag

3. Drake - Views, Cash Money Records As one of the most popular albums of 2016, Drake perfected his sound with Views. Shifting his focus from hip-hop beats to more pop and R&B melodies, Drake landed a few #1 singles on the charts this year. “Pop Style” “Controlla” and “One Dance” are among the trendiest songs off the album – the ones you’ve seen everyone post lyrics to on every form of social media. And let’s be real, the lyrics are not to go unnoticed. Drake mentions how this album is himself at his most honest. Whether it’s about his success, his struggle, or a relationship gone wrong, he masters the ability to be

raw and emotional in a charted radio track. Though most of the album feels similar with his relaxed, monotone vocals, the features add some flavor to Views. PARTYNEXTDOOR, Rihanna, and Future are just a few name that increase the album’s credibility and versatility. It’s evident that Drake knows what songs will do well and it’s no wonder why Views is on everyone’s favorite list for 2016. - Kristen Humphries

4. Anderson .Paak - Malibu, Steel Wool, OBE, Art Club, Empire Distribution

California-born rapper and singer Anderson .Paak is one of the most exciting breakout stars of 2016. Although his album Malibu was released way back in January, it continues to be a topic of conversation at the end of the year. Driven by a clear funk influence and created with vibrant, full instrumentals, Malibu stands out as one of the most memorable releases of the year. Paak’s stunning vocals serve as the album’s centerpiece, as he alternates between spitting devastatingly sharp rap verses and singing with conviction and finesse. The genre-defying release set a precedent for other new artists to bend the rules of the styles they work within. -Charlotte Freitag

5. Frank Ocean - Blonde, Boys Don’t Cry With the success of Channel Orange, the whole world anticipated Frank Ocean’s newest release. The album is Frank at his most honest – adopting meditative and atmospheric instrumentals, while still focusing on heavier issues. The opening track “Nikes” and its accompanying video bring light to Trayvon Martin. Blonde’s message, whether intentional or not, is the universal feeling of loneliness, struggle, sadness, love, and loss. Songs like “Self Control” and “Ivy” are feel good songs about things that don’t feel good to talk about: still having feelings for someone, but everything is different now. This album proves Frank writes songs for himself and it’s an added bonus if others can relate. The risky production moves and nonstandard song structures paid off for Blonde – and we certainly think Frank deserved a Grammy nom for it. - Kristen Humphries

1. Ariana Grande - Dangerous Woman, Republic Records

Although Ariana Grande had previously been barred from her elite popstar status due to her Nickelodeon image and childish reputation, her new album Dangerous Woman has catapulted her to new heights and cemented her as a pop queen that’s here to stay. Her previous two albums, Yours Truly and My Everything, droned on with dreamy ‘90s R&B ballads that definitely matched her voice, but not the persona she was ultimately aiming for. With Dangerous Woman, Grande has transformed herself into exactly that - a fierce woman who is no longer afraid of what critics say or how well she is received; she is herself, unapologetically, churning out track after track of bangers that reminds us why we love her so much. “Into You” is pure pop perfection; “Side to Side” is a funky, mature collaboration; “Be Alright” is a powerful EDM explosion. Grande finally has the ability to explore herself and her abilities on Dangerous Woman, and that’s what makes it so lovable. - Maya Alfia

2. Beyonce - Lemonade, Parkwood Entertainment and Columbia Records

It’s no surprise that Beyonce’s Lemonade made this list. The album, along with the short film that accompanied it, took the world by storm. Lemonade combines influences from Beyonce’s roots and other artists that surround her. Artists such as Jack White and The Weeknd collaborated on songs for the album. The intentionality of the music and lyrics in each track show a glimpse into Beyonce’s life. The uniqueness of each track made the listening experience unforgettable. This album was refreshing from the sugar coated pop that usually is released in any given year. Beyonce pushed the boundaries with this album and proved that she will forever be Queen Bey. - Courtney Cook

3. The 1975 - I like it when you sleep for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it, Interscope Records

For anybody looking to be a “sycophantic, prophetic, socratic junkie wannabe”, this album is probably pretty high on your top 2016 picks too. The 1975 take every opportunity they can in their sophomore

album to validate and then immediately confuse their genre placement. The stark contrast of electronically manufactured sounds and bare acoustic vocals within minutes of each other are what make this album so incredibly interesting. For any band wondering how to top a killer debut, look no further than The 1975. Fans can listen to ILIWYSFYASBYSUOI a hundred times, knowing every single lyric and still be able to find something new every time, making this one of our picks for Best Pop Album. - Maddy Shiffer

4. Lady Gaga - Joanne, Interscope Records The queen of pop, Lady Gaga, made one of the most epic comebacks of the 2016 music scene. Joanne combines all of Gaga’s classic pop elements with an added maturity that fans have been waiting for. Lead singles “Perfect Illusion” and “Million Reasons” set the stage for the smash album that Joanne quickly became, but still left some room for surprises. The initial hype vibe given off by the album melted perfectly into the more country-influenced tracks, giving almost everybody something they can enjoy. And if there’s one thing we know Gaga can do well, it’s writing through different genres while still making them her own. There’s almost no other universe where songs like “Come To Mama” and “A-YO” belong on the same album, but Gaga worked her magic and made it happen. Her variety and unapologetic approach to pop music is what makes Lady Gaga’s Joanne a true frontrunner for our Best of 2016. - Madeline Shiffer

Jon Bellion - The Human Condition, Capitol Records

Possibly one of the biggest up and comers of the year, Jon Bellion, completes our list of albums for best pop albums of 2016. Filled with some of the greatest tracks to sing and dance along to, Bellion defies genres across the entire album. “New York Soul Pt 2” (the second piece of Bellion’s “New York Soul Pt 1” released on an earlier album) showcases Bellion’s ability to rap, while “Weight of the World” shows off Bellion’s talent as a singer/songwriter. The Human Condition grabbed the attention of thousands of listeners worldwide, even a few big names, like Bea Miller and Calum Hood from 5 Seconds of Summer, who both conversed with Bellion via Twitter. The Human Condition completely defies genres, pushing it to be possibly one of the best albums of 2016. - Addie Whelan

TOP COUNTRY 1. Miranda Lambert - The Weight of the Winds, RCA Nashville

Miranda Lambert has been through a lot over the past couple of years. We haven’t heard from her since her 2014 album Platinum. Since her divorce, we didn’t hear much until her critically acclaimed single “Vice” hit the airwaves. Shortly after, Lambert announced the release of her sixth studio double album The Weight of These Wings, and it’s definitely a step up from her previous release. Lambert gets more personal on the album, which includes two discs called “The Nerve” and “The Heart”. Each disc tells her side of a very public story in songs such as “Vice”, “Tin Man” and “Use My Heart”. It’s an album that bittersweet, funny, rough around the edges but soft at heart. Some may say it’s Lambert’s best album yet as it showcases her brilliant knack at songwriting, and pushing the boundaries like she never has before. She doesn’t only sing about pain in a brilliant way but she embodies it in every way. - Kara Johnson

2. Keith Urban - Ripcord, Capital Records – Hit Red Records

If you don’t know it by now then you’re hiding under a rock because Keith Urban has been taking the world by storm since his 3-year stint on American Idol. His audiences have grown exceptionally and his album sales have skyrocketed. He’s made history more times than we can count and he’s continuing to do that with his 8th studio album Ripcord. The genre jumping release takes country music out of its comfort zone with Pitbull and Nile Rodgers, making the album next-level experimentation. The moving backward banjos, club synths and rhythmic beats make Ripcord the history making album that it is. The album went No.1 simultaneously for two weeks in America, Canada and Australia. His hits “Wasted Time”, “John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16”, “Break On Me”and “Blue Ain’t Your Color” aren’t all that make this album so great. The heartbreaker “That Could Still Be Us, the pop gem “The Fighter” and the sexy “Gettin’ in the Way” are just some examples of the heights the Grammy-nominated album goes to. It’s certainly the best in Urban’s career and one the greatest in 2016. - Kara Johnson

3. Maren Morris - Hero, Columbia Records Nashville Early in January of 2016 is when Maren Morris really began to get make a name for herself in the country music genre. 2016 has been her year. She made country radio

history with her debut single “My Church”. Morris went on tour with country icon and legend Keith Urban and released her chart-topping debut album Hero. The album is included her hit songs “My Church,” “80’s Mercedes,” and the sassiest of them all “Rich”. But these songs don’t do it justice. It’s a feel-good album with raw hits in the making including tracks like “Once,” “How It’s Done,” and “I Wish I Was”. It’s a nitty-gritty album inspired by everything from country to R&B. She is heroic in her candor throughout the entire album, saying things we’ve all thought at one time or another. It’s a good thing that Hero is a Grammy-nominated album. We would be confused if it wasn’t. - Kara Johnson

4. Sturgill Simpson - A Sailor’s Guide to Earth, Atlantic Records

Perhaps 2016 has been the year for Sturgill Simpson and his psychedelic twist to modern country. He’s been recognized by the Grammy Awards by receiving three nods with his latest album A Sailor’s Guide to Earth. The 2016 release is weirder and more adventurous than most albums in the country genre nowadays, forging a new way forward for Simpson and the genre as a whole. A Sailor’s Guide to Earth is a refreshing sound with a creative risk attached to it. It’s a concept album addressed to his son and wife, which might sound corny or cliché but the result is beautiful. The instrumentation alone makes Simpson a musical genius. This is evident in “Keep It Between the Lines,” “Breakers Roar” and “Oh Sarah”. It’s a starryeyed release that deserves the praise and nominations its received. Everyone in country music should be watching Simpson for inspiration because he’s a creative genius and could very well go down in history as one of country’s finest. – Kara Johnson

5. Aubrie Sellers -

New City Blues, Carnival Records

With the recent resurgence of authentic country music, Aubrie Sellers has come onto the scene as one of a kind. Her debut album, New City Blues, is full of blues-infused country music as well as some slower country ballads. Tracks such as “Light of Day” and “Sit Here and Cry” are catchy rock infused tracks that separate her from the average country artists. Aubrie Sellers also sets herself apart with the use of lyrics. The track, “Magazine”, discusses the culture surrounding superficiality of magazines and the thoughtlessness people can fall into by reading magazines. The quality of Aubrie Sellers’ debut album proves that she is here to stay. - Courtney Cook

TOP INDIE

1. Bon Iver - 22, A Million,

If you’re looking for an album that immediately gets trapped inside your brain and creates an obsession, Bon Iver’s 22, A Million is exactly what you’re looking for. After premiering the album in full at Justin Vernon’s own Eaux Claires Festival in Wisconsin, the album instantly drew thousands of listeners to hidden Reddit versions of the album. Finally, the album was released, topping charts worldwide. Filled with tracks like “8 (circle)” (premiered on Jimmy Fallon) and “33 ‘GOD’,” the album showcased Bon Iver’s talents to stretch across multiple genres. The album artwork even grabbed the attention of artists and graphic designers around the world with its distinct symbols and color palette. The album peaked the interest of millions of listeners and continues to maintain itself as a top album of 2016. – Addie Whelan

2. Modern Baseball - Holy Ghost, Run For Cover Records

We’re not going to lie, Modern Baseball has been one of our favorites since before 2016, but this year was really the icing on the cake. The highly anticipated third album, Holy Ghost, was released right off the tails of two emotional turnarounds for frontmen Brendan Lukens and Jake Ewald. The result is a full circle journey from both songwriters. Even “the most honest” lyrics they’ve ever written make the record, according to Lukens in their documentary Tripping In The Dark released earlier this year. There’s heartache, sadness and a dash of well deserved optimism throughout the album, and honestly, what else could you want in an indie album? Thanks for this one, Modern Baseball, you’re definitely one of our 2016 picks for Best Indie Album. - Madeline Shiffer

3. Local Natives - Sunlit Youth, Loma Vista Recordings California natives Local Natives released their third album, Sunlit Youth in September of this year, bringing indie fans together for another incredible listen. Supported by a nationwide tour, Local Natives

grabbed the attention of both old and new fans with their newest release. Completed with incredible artwork and a bonus 10” disc, Sunlit Youth topped lists of indie records through the end of the year. Big tracks include singles like “Past Lives” and Villainy,” both of which were released as singles, both of which were added to viral Spotify playlists. Filled with Local Natives’ signature sound and frontman Taylor Rice’s signature vocals, Sunlit Youth is sure to be an album to remember - Addie Whelan

4. Two Door Cinema Club - Gameshow, Parlophone If anything, 2016 has been the year of an 80s resurgence in the music industry. Two Door Cinema Club follows the trend with the release of the band’s third studio album, Gameshow. Reminiscent of M83 and The Naked and Famous, TDCC channels the 80s through the use of synths and distinctive pedals. Notable tracks include “Ordinary” and “Fever” with their grooving guitar riffs and pleasant falsetto vocals. It’s a different direction for the band, which was questionable following the success of Tourist History (2010) and Beacon (2012). With the risks taken by the band, this album feels fresh and eclectic. Gameshow is the album you put on in the car when you have a long night drive on the highway, and it’s worth multiple listens in its entirety. - Kristen Humphries

5. Banks - The Altar, Harvest Records Alternative R&B artist, Banks, gave us her sophomore album, The Altar, this year. The album encompasses more of Banks’ vocal talent as well as her deep songwriting. It’s a step up from her first album, Goddess. The Altar is a darker album, but musically and lyrically captivating. Tracks like “Gemini Feed,” “Fuck With Myself,” and “Mind Games” are a step up and more edgy. The sound in these tracks capture the alternative R&B sound that’s been stepping into the alternative music scene. The album shows off the alternative R&B subgenre that’s still seems to be invisible to the alternative community, but we’re confident in 2017 that will change. - Valerie McIntyre

LIVE PERFORMANCE

1. The 1975 is one of

the most aesthetically pleasing musical groups that we have seen in a long time, going back to their first album when everything they did was black and white. Debuting their second record, they took on the bold color scheme of pink and blue. With this, they also brought the color to their live show. Along with their powerful performance, they are also backed by full LED screens and towers. The towers display different imagery designed by Tobias Rylander. Above the group are their trademark rectangles that glow bright during the show. The band delivers such an amazing show, bringing out full range of emotions from their fans from crying at songs such as “If I Believe You” to dancing during “The Sound”. This band has one of the greatest live shows in 2016. – Stone Fenk

2. Twenty One Pilots put on a live show that you do

not want to miss. Even though there are two members in the band, they definitely know how to work the stage. The band even included their classic costumes of skeletons, alien faces and classic ski masks. To the production aspect of the show, strobes, visuals, flashy screen backgrounds, and crazy antics backflips, lots of jumping (band and crowd alike), crowd involvement, hamsterball crowd surfing and Tyler’s unforgettable stage-climbing were all a huge part of the show. Twenty One Pilots prove that it’s not only about the music anymore—it’s about the entire experience. The band is set to tour in early 2017 and we recommend on seeing their show because it’s one you will not forget. - Bailey Flores

2016, just like every year, has been Beyonce’s year. She started it out in February with Formation, her first new single in years, commenting on topics she feels strongly about, such as her culture and the problem of police brutality. This song, and especially its performance at the Super Bowl and its music video, caused a stir of controversy that only made Beyonce

more powerful. Her Super Bowl performance alongside Coldplay showed off her incredible skills and ethereal presence; it was arguably one of the most enjoyable Super Bowl performances ever. Afterwards, she announced the Formation World Tour, which began later in the year. The show was brought to the largest stages in the world and she put on carefully planned, entertaining shows. The show used a 60-foot tall LED monitor, a treadmill runway and a second stage. It’s not hard to see why people shell out hundreds or even thousands of dollars to see her. - Maya Alfia

With such a whirlwind of live performances in 2016, it’s hard to pick out a particular favorite - except for this one. Panic! At The Disco’s 2016 tour did anything but blend in, and we’re not really surprised. The band’s attention to detail and theatrically inspired performances made for a live show that impressed any fan from 2005 and newbies of today. A stacked lineup Weezer as a tour partner? Sign us up immediately - and amazing technical aspects throughout the concert add up to an ideal experience for the entire audience. And honestly, who wouldn’t want to jam out to I Write Sins in the middle of 2016? - Madeline Shiffer

there’s one standout tour (and set of headlines) this year it is definitely Kanye West’s Saint Pablo Tour. Not only was Kanye’s show a purely one man show without any opening acts, he managed to perform above the crowd. Yes, Kanye managed to build a floating stage where he performed on a platform that moved around the crowd. Complete with his signature light show, he pulled out hit after hit as the crowd went crazy. There were even mosh pits below on the general admission floor quite frequently during the show. Kanye West once again proved himself to be a legendary performer with this year’s Saint Pablo tour. - Alyssa Buzzello

Gallant, Ology, Mind of A Genius Records and Warner Brothers Records Gallant broke onto the music scene with the release of his single, “Weight in Gold”, in 2015. Ever since then, he’s been leaving audiences and listeners awestruck around the world. His debut album, Ology, was released in early 2016. This album can be classified as Alt-R&B with the use synth-pop influences. Along with a strong debut album, Gallant’s stage shows are unforgettable. His unforgettable performance and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon catapulted him into the limelight. With his amazing stage presence as well as amazing music, Gallant has earned the spot of Beyond the Stage’s breakout artist of 2016. - Courtney Cook

Our Breakout Artist, Gallant, toured more than just venues this year. Performing at President Barack Obama's first ever South by South Lawn (SXSL), Gallant played a few of his hits at the White House in Washington D.C.. As one of just a few artists that were chosen to perform, Gallant grabbed the attention of listeners worldwide with his show stopping performance. One of our editors, Gabi Talisman, even had the chance to attend the show, snapping a few quick photos!

1. Beyonce, Lemonade, Parkwood Entertainment Most likely one of the most dramatic releases of the year, Beyonce kept with her “out of nowhere album drops” with some hard evidence against husband, Jay-Z. Tracks like “Sorry,” and “Hold Up,” made news headlines just about everywhere and may have even brought the album more success. The album was very well received; both critics and fans alike were bowing down to Queen B. The album showed major growth and offered more versatility that wasn’t found with her previous efforts. The visual element that went along with the album was a great way to further showcase Bey’s artistic growth. “Formation” set the tone for the entire record and was a great entrance to a new era of Beyonce. - Lauren Klonowski

2. The 1975, “i like it when you sleep for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it,” Interscope Records

If there’s anyone that came out on top in 2016, it’s The 1975. The British indie-pop band pulled a complete one-eighty by taking a social media hiatus in 2015, worrying fans that a break up might be in the near future. But to everybody’s surprise and amazement, the band came back with a vengeance - and a completely new brand. The sophomore album contains everything fans have expected, and have totally unexpected, in a mix of total top pop charters and synth bass lines that are sure to be stuck in your head all day. We’ve had this album - and all of its neon pink glory - on repeat since it came out in February, and it still manages to surprise us, making it one of our picks for 2016 Album of the Year. 3. Kanye West, The Life of

Pablo, GOOD Music

Kanye West’s The Life of Pablo was one of the best albums of 2016. This eighteen track album, released via Tidal was already hyped up to begin with. Kanye went on twitter rants and started beefs with artists like Wiz Khalifa, in order to get more attention before he dropped his album. The album was delayed by Chance The Rapper and released exclusively on

Tidal until it was available on other streaming services. The album includes so many samples, including Desiigner’s “Panda” and Sister Nancy’s “Bam Bam.” The album debuted at No.1 at the top of the Billboard 200 Chart. The album hasn’t seemed to fade in popularity since its release and Kanye did a tour supporting the album until his recent mental breakdown, which he has been hospitalized for and taken care of. -Stone Fenk

4. Chance The Rapper - Coloring Book, Independent Chance The Rapper’s Coloring Book not only had a sizeable impact on the current landscape of hip-hop, but also on the music industry at large. Released for free without the backing of a record label, Coloring Book became one of the most popular releases of the year solely off the strength of its quality. The gospelinflected hip-hop album inspired the Recording Academy to change their rules so that free releases are eligible for nomination, a long overdue victory for independent artists everywhere. Coloring Book established Chance as a music industry mainstay, proving that pure talent will always get recognized, even without the promotion provided by record labels. – Charlotte Freitag

Ariana Grande, Dangerous Woman, Universal Records Unless you’ve been checked out of every genre of music this year - pop, hip hop and even musical theatre - you’ve seen Ariana Grande make 2016 her own. The release of the title single off of “Dangerous Woman” shook the charts and let everybody and their mother know that Ariana wasn’t playing any games this time around. With features from Lil Wayne, Macy Gray and even queen Nicki Minaj herself, there was no way this album wasn’t going to go through the roof. Ariana’s wide range of genre, as well as vocals, gave her the ability to leave everybody speechless with no excuse not to fall in love with her music. And the cherry on top? BEST COLLABORATIONS

1. “Closer” - The Chainsmokers Ft. Halsey 2016 was full of hits from The Chainsmokers, the year also gave us many collaborations. One of the collaborations that caught our eye was Closer, a track created by The Chainsmokers and it features indie pop artist Halsey. As soon as the single hit Top 40 Radio, it became almost impossible to get out of our heads. (We aren’t complaining though.) This collaboration holds a special place in our hearts for sure. The eccentric beats are unique and it makes the perfect song to dance too. The song describes a sexy love story, much different than your average love song. Each performance of the song live made the single itself even better. Just when we thought the song couldn’t get sexier, they released the steamy music video and it hit us right in the feels. “Closer” quickly became one of the best songs released in 2016 and there is no doubt that we will still be jamming to it in 2017. It is just that good. - Samantha Aneed

2. “Don’t Let Me Down” - Chainsmokers ft. Daya Months before “Closer,” The Chainsmokers were already saturating the radio waves with their massive hit “Don’t Let Me Down” with young singer songwriter Daya. While she had been a silent success before the feature, both The Chainsmokers and Daya quickly and rightfully became household names. With The Chainsmokers’ explosive beats and Daya’s smooth and soulful voice, this song is wonderfully catchy and completely a track that you can dance to. It is no wonder the song topped so many charts early in 2016. This is a perfectly non-abrasive party anthem hit that could not be ignored this whole year. -Alyssa Buzzello

“Different For Girls” – Dierks Bentley featuring Elle King When the country world heard that Dierks Bentley would be collaborating with “Ex’s and Oh’s” singer Elle King, it was a wonder what the track would sound like. “Different For Girls” isn’t what many were expecting from Bentley but it’s a great collaboration and one of the best tracks Bentley has ever done. The song discusses the differences between guys and girls

and how they mend a broken heart. “A guy gets drunk with his friends, and he might hook up / Fast – forward through the pain, pushin’ back when the tears come up / But it’s different for girls,” King and Bentley sing in the chorus. The lyrics brings true honesty but the vocals is the forefront. They both complement each other in the track, which allows the song to make a life of its own. “Different for Girls” was written by JT Harding and Shane McAnally and won a CMA Award for Musical Event of the Year. – Kara Johnson

4. Work – Rihanna (feat. Drake) The world truly can’t get enough of Drake & Rihanna together. That’s what made their previous collaborations so successful and especially why Rihanna’s “Work (feat. Drake)” jumped to the top of the charts almost immediately. After a 3-year break - after releasing albums annually for several years Rihanna came back with a vengeance to reclaim her elite status in the music industry. Work included Caribbean and dancehall influences that we haven’t truly seen since Rihanna’s debut way back in 2006. By reinventing her old self and creating a real club anthem that was easy to dance and mumble the unknown lyrics to, Rihanna made 2016 the year of Work (both literally and musically). The song maintained its position as the #1 song in the country for nine weeks, and it’s not hard to see why. – Maya Alfia

5. “Cheap Thrills” - Sia Featuring Sean Paul The track “Cheap Thrills” is one the most played tracks from Sia’s album This is Acting. What better way to make the song even more popular was adding rapper Sean Paul to the track. Having these two artists on a track just seem to go together. Plus, you caught yourself singing along in the car to this song. “Cheap Thrills” is catchy and it screams 2016 when we think of Sia, other than “The Greatest”. We can definitely say that Sia had a good 2016 with this track and we wouldn’t be surprised if this song is played at New Years Parties to ring in 2017. - Valerie McIntyre

BEST COMEBACKS

1. LCD Soundsystem The world thought that LCD Soundsystem was over when they announced their break-up in 2011; their electronic sound was a staple in the indie scene. People flocked to their “farewell” show at Madison Square Garden, paying any amount of money to see their favorite band ever perform just one last time. Luckily, old and new fans alike jumped at the sight of LCD Soundsystem’s 2016 return, reuniting just after releasing their first new single in five years - a Christmas song. They have since been touring and performing at high-profile festivals like Coachella and Austin City Limits. They have signed to Columbia Records and plan to release their new album in 2017. – Maya Alfia

2. Green Day Green Day has been a staple in the punk-rock scene, garnering mainstream success over the years. This year, they made their comeback with their twelfth album, Revolution Radio. Their comeback incorporated much of what they are known for over their 20+ years making music, though it’s their first album they’ve produced themselves. The music is recognizable— there is no question that it’s a Green Day album. They’ve definitely not shied away from their social and political commentary either, with their lead single, “Bang Bang,” commentating on gun violence. Green Day has been around a long time, and there is no doubt that Green Day will continue to be popular with fans new and old. - Delaney DeAngelis

3. A Tribe Called Quest Twenty years after the release of Beats, Rhymes and Life, A Tribe Called Quest returned to the public eye to share one more album with the world. Their new album, We Got It From Here… Thank You 4 Your Service, was incredibly well received upon its release and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. The thoughtfully constructed album serves as a triumphant finale to a long, fruitful career. Shortly after the album’s release, a street in Queens, New York was named after the

late Phife Dawg, a beloved member of the group who tragically passed away earlier in the year. Even after a twenty-year hiatus, the group proved to be as strong as ever. - Charlotte Freitag

4. Frank Ocean After a few years of silence, Frank Ocean took over 2016. If it was any indication that Frank was sick of the album release pressure from fans and the rest of the world, his visual album spoke to it. Endless, the visual album where you (seriously) watched paint dry on live stream video was one of two releases for Frank this year. At its core, the album is a bunch of demos and unreleased tracks. He used Endless to fulfill his label contract, but released the more popular Blonde by himself. The clear differences between his debut album Channel Orange and Blonde got the entire world talking. It’s Frank stepping in a new direction – one where he does whatever he pleases with production, lyrics, and song structure. It’s all him, creating his own rules on what he wants to sound like as a true artist. Though some critics don’t understand Frank’s thought process, the album landed the #1 spot on the Billboard 200. So despite some of the backlash for the randomness of Blonde, it’s clear Frank’s artistic endeavors got people talking about him again in 2016. - Kristen Humphries

You Me At Six After releasing and promoting their previous album, Cavalier Youth, You Me At Six went on a social media hiatus to record their newest record, Night People at Black Bird Studios in Nashville, Tennessee. Finally, in August 2016, the band returned, announcing a new album, Night People, and a song of the same name. Throughout the months, they released new tracks and even announced the album would come out a week earlier than expected. Their return has been met with much success from fans new and old, even with the more mature, stadium rock sound. Lyrically and instrumentally, the band has improved on their talents and there’s no doubt that their success will continue in 2017. - Delaney DeAngelis

“Heathens” by Twenty One Pilots, Atlantic, Warner Bros. There was definitely no shortage of great soundtrack songs in 2016, but the one that tops our list is “Heathens” by Twenty One Pilots. With the success of their singles “Stressed Out” and “Ride,” it’s no surprise that the track from the much anticipated “Suicide Squad” movie found mainstream success as well. Much like other Twenty One Pilots songs, “Heathens” is catchy, but still different from what is typically heard on the radio. Singer Tyler Joseph’s voice sounds altered, almost robotic, and it fits with the lyrical content of the song, as well as the movie it was written for. “Heathens” is almost like an extension of their album “Blurryface.” Given the vibe of both “Blurryface” and “Suicide Squad,” the band and the movie are a perfect match. - Delaney DeAngelis

“Can’t Stop The Feeling” - Justin Timberlake, Villa 40/RCA Records The song that was blasting through speakers everywhere this past summer, “Can’t Stop The Feeling” scored the number 2 spot with ease. Whether you made it out to see “Trolls” the movie or not, it’s safe a bet that you had this track stuck in your head. A little different that Timberlake’s typical smooth R&B pop, the track showcases just what all he can do. With its intensely catchy hooks and smart lyrics, this song was an easy crowd-pleaser. The upbeat vibe of the track made it a great fit for the whimsical animated movie. The fact that this song was a huge hit before the film had hit theatres and is still currently in the top 40 charts more than a month after it premiered, shows it’s resilience. - Lauren Klonowski

“Sucker For Pain” - Ty Dolla Sign, Lil Wayne, Imagine Dragons, Wiz Khalifa, Logic, X Ambassadors Suicide Squad was one of the most anticipated movies of 2016, so the soundtrack had to fit the movie just right, which means that the rap meets rock track “Sucker For Pain” definitely made our list for Best of 2016. so many big names in both the rap and rock scene. The song features Lil Wayne, Ty Dolla $ign, Logic, and Wiz Khalifa – alongside Imagine Dragons and X Ambassadors. The rockers sing an eerie chorus, which really sets out the vibe of the song in between each rap verse. The mix of hip-hop and rock blends together seamlessly to create an eerie song, which fits the mood of the film perfectly. - Bailey Flores

4. “How Far I’ll Go” - Alessia Cara, Walt Disney Records

Alessia Cara was one of our Breakout Artists of 2015 and she hasn’t slowed down in 2016. The Canadian pop-R&B singer-songwriter was brought on by Disney to sing her own version of the now Golden Globe nominated song “How Far I’ll Go” by Lin-Manuel Miranda for the soundtrack of the company’s newest film, Moana. Disney did something different with this film by casting a girl the same age as Moana to voice her; one of the great things about Cara’s take on this song is that her youthfulness shines through her vocalizations making sure to keep along the same vibe that Disney was going for when casting a younger actress to begin with. Despite only being released at the end of November, this catchy song is already being heard all around and the hype isn’t going to die down any soon. - Marissa Sandoval

Hamilton Mixtape, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Various Artists, Atlantic Records As if one of the most successful Broadway shows of all time couldn’t get any bigger, Lin-Manuel Miranda dropped the Hamilton Mixtape at the beginning of December. The star-studded album includes revamps of songs “My Shot”, “Satisfied”, “Burn” and even gives fans a look into some unreleased demos and B-sides. The Hamilton phenomenon continued to break records in 2016 and the Mixtape was the hiphop icing on the show tunes cake. Award-winning musicians The Roots, John Legend and even LinManuel himself provide the underlying music for each lyrically brilliant song - a dream team mix for our Best of 2016. - Madeline Shiffer

BEST TOUR PRODUCTION 1. When you go to a LANY show, it’s one you making the list for best tours. From old songs to won’t forget. LANT is a synth-pop trio, comprised of front man Paul Klein, guitarist/keyboardist Les Priest and drummer Jake Goss. Without even releasing a full album, the one thing you will first notice at a show is how strong and passionate their fan base is. They come out in forces and truly help make the show experience by dancing and singing at the top of their lungs. LANY shows truly make you feel like you dancing in another world, while making you feel calm and relaxed. Most importantly they make you feel like you are just living in the moment. - Bailey Flores

Starboy The Weeknd Republic Records The Weeknd’s career exploded into the mainstream with the success of his album, “Beauty Behind the Madness.” After the massive hit “Can’t Feel My Face” and having a song for “50 Shades of Grey,” he’s back with his new album, Starboy. Overall, it’s a good album. However, the 18-track album drags on just a little too long with a few unmemorable songs. While there are some forgettable tracks on this album, there are plenty of great ones. Starboy, “Party Monster” and “False Alarm,” are all great, fun songs. “Rockin’” is a song that is likely to become yet another massive hit for The Weeknd. While “Secrets” isn’t the greatest song of the album, it isn’t bad, and The Weeknd switches it up and lowers his voice a couple octaves. “True Colors” is not a cover of the Cyndi Lauper song, but an R&B ballad.

With this album, The Weeknd takes his blend of R&B and Pop and incorporates influences from the 80s, electronic music and more. Most notably is the clear influence of Michael Jackson in the tracks “A Lonely Night” and “I Feel it Coming.” “I Feel it Coming” is the final track of the album and arguable the best track of the album. The first single from the album, “Starboy,” became an instant hit. However, The Weeknd definitely missed an opportunity to create what could have been an amazing concept album utilizing the Starboy persona, instead focusing more on women and relationships. Overall, the album isn’t anything too different from his previous album. Though the album is quite long, stretching to just over an hour, it has some great songs that are sure to keep The Weeknd’s momentum with mainstream hits. 3.5/5 – Delaney DeAngelis

Night People You Me At Six Infectious Music

in “Take on the World” and “Give.” The latter song closes the album, a strong, emotional rock ballad, and is one of the best songs You Me At Six have released. “Spell It Out” pushes Franceschi’s voice, showcasing his strong vocal range. “Make Your Move” and “Can’t Hold Back” are quite heavy, but still have the catchiness of a pop song.

It’s been nearly three years since You Me At Six released their album, Cavalier Youth, and after a long social media hiatus, the band is back with their fifth album, Night People. This album is much more rock than their previous album, finding a more mature sound. You Me At Six isn’t a band that has gone through any major sound changes, but they’ve slowly gotten more rock over the years. This album is most similar to their third release, Sinners Never Sleep, but it’s still different, a more mature rock sound fit for a “stadium rock” band. It’s clear that the band put their all into this album, pushing themselves to create their best work yet. The title track, the first single of the album, opens the album, establishing the band’s new sound. It’s hard to ignore the raw emotion and passion that comes through each song as singer Josh Franceschi sings, particularly

The only downside to Night People is that it has only ten tracks, coming in at 35 minutes. While it’s only ten songs, it feels complete. Each track has a purpose that fits with the overall sound and theme of the album. The album is confident and unreserved. It’s exactly the album the band wanted to make—there’s no filler songs, no forced songs.
