BCA CENTER SUMMER EXHIBITIONS

Falling into Language: A Travelogue, installation view, 2021

BUBBLEGUM POP

KAYLYNN SULLIVAN TWOTREES: FALLING INTO LANGUAGE: A TRAVELOGUE

Through October 9, 2021 First Floor Gallery, BCA Center Merging popular and consumer culture with fantastical themes, Bubblegum Pop presents a group of artists whose colorful work and playful imagery explore themes of nostalgia, youth, optimism, and material abundance as both a celebration and slanting critique on contemporary society. Using materials and subjects drawn from, or inspired by popular culture, the artists in Bubblegum Pop blur the distinction between high, low, and mass-produced forms of artistic expression. Bubblegum Pop encourages us to gaze beneath each work’s glossy veneer and consider the economic, environmental, and social mythologies we self-perpetuate as a society. Featured Artists: Pip & Pop, Matt Neckers, Jon Rappleye, The Smittens, and Kathryn Wiegers. Bubblegum Pop is sponsored by Higher Ground

Through October 9, 2021 Second Floor Gallery, BCA Center In Falling into Language: A Travelogue, Kaylynn Sullivan TwoTrees creates a mythical travelogue exploring a shared cosmic ancestry that connects us beyond the constraints of spoken and written language. TwoTrees’ immersive installation of paintings, soundscapes, and video feature contemporary vocables (a sequence of sounds and syllables without literal meaning) created in collaboration with musicians from Vermont, India and Japan. TwoTrees describes Falling into Language: A Travelogue as a visual manifestation of her experience engaging with ceremonial vocables that are deeply rooted in the oral tradition of her mixed Native American and African heritage. Combining score and imagery to create an immersive environment of visual vocables, Falling into Language: A Travelogue reveals the power of voice and imagery to reconnect us to an interdependent and vibrant world.

UNBOUND

BRADLEY BORTHWICK: OBJECTS OF EMPIRE

October 22, 2021 — February 5, 2022 First Floor Gallery, BCA Center Unbound features the work of three New England artists who explore contemporary approaches to abstraction as it relates to architecture, space, and materials. United by their use of geometric, shaped forms that push outside the boundaries of the ubiquitous rectangle, each artist considers the possibilities of abstraction with novel perspectives – unconstrained by prescribed expectations or rules. Featuring abstract painting, sculpture, and works on paper, Unbound includes the work of Rachel Gross, Rob Hitzig, and Kirsten Reynolds.

October 22, 2021 — February 5, 2022 Second Floor Gallery, BCA Center Bradley Borthwick’s sculptural installation, Objects of Empire, evolved from his research of the Dorset marble quarry of Vermont and the ancient Roman storehouses known as horrea, found throughout southern Italy. For his first solo exhibition in New England, the artist creates hand-carved facsimiles of headstone and amphora, as well as beeswax models cast from their likeness. While seemingly incongruent and separated by time, location, and culture, these objects become poignant symbols of the ascension and demise of their respective realms. Calling to mind notions of sustainability and impermanence, Objects of Empire thoughtfully ponders the shared cycles of civilization.

BCA Exhibitions are funded in part by a grant from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, and Vermont Arts Council.
