SKY HOPINKA: FAINTING SPELLS
June 17-October 8, 2022 First Floor Gallery, BCA Center
June 17-October 8, 2022 Second Floor Gallery, BCA Center
More Than an Object presents the creative possibilities of the often overlooked still life genre. The exhibit explores the vitality and inventiveness of the still life tradition through a multiplicity of innovative approaches and media including painting, photography, video, and sculpture.
A member of the Ho-Chunk Nation of Wisconsin and the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians, Sky Hopinka is an internationally recognized multimedia artist who explores themes of language, culture, and homeland as he reflects on colonialism and nature of Indigenous identity. The exhibit Fainting Spells features two films from 2018. Fainting Spells is an imagined myth for the Xąwįska (or the Indian Pipe Plant) used by the Ho-Chunk to revive those who have fainted. This dream-like film is voiced through recollections of youth, learning, lore, and departure. When you’re lost in the rain considers experiences of loss and longing overlaid with images of the landscape, and was created in response to the 1965 Bob Dylan song, ‘Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues.’
Often relegated to the art of imitation, the humble still life is constantly being reimagined by today’s contemporary artists who use the genre to explore the personal, metaphoric, social, and unconventional. Featuring a group of prominent artists, More Than an Object reveals how the still life continues to evolve and resonate with artists, collectors, and viewers today. Participating artists include: Susan Abbott, Christina Erives, Oona Gardner, Ori Gersht, Libby Paloma, Mike Pelletier, William Ransom, Zachary Stephens, Christopher Terry.
Both short films include the near extinct Indigenous language, chinuk wawa, which, when combined with fleeting images of the land and memory, create a poetic, visual language.
More than an Object: The Contemporary Still Life and Sky Hopinka are sponsored in part by The Maslow Family Foundation, and by Leunig’s Bistro and Café. Hospitality sponsors, Farrell Distributing, Prophecy Wines, an Lake Champlain Chocolates.

VALERIE HIRD: THE GARDEN OF ABSOLUTE TRUTHS
WILLIAM MCDOWELL: ROXHAM ROAD TO NORTH ELBA
October 21, 2022–January 28, 2023 First Floor, BCA Center Opening Reception: Friday, October 21, 5-7pm
October 21, 2022–January 28, 2023 First Floor, BCA Center Opening Reception: Friday, October 21, 5-7pm
Vermont-based and nationally acclaimed artist Valerie Hird explores the connections between culture and environment as a meditation on the ambiguities of our contemporary world. In her first solo exhibition at the BCA Center, Hird presents a visual exploration of humanity’s shared myths using a diverse vocabulary of colorful patterns and iconic symbols gathered as well as reimagined to signify personal and collective identity.
William McDowell explores peoples’ relationships to place, history, and memory in a new photographic series, Roxham Road to North Elba. With more than 30 color photographs made in the documentary tradition, McDowell creates a powerful and prosaic photographic installation that encourages us to engage with the ongoing legacy of racism and social justice in America.
The Garden of Absolute Truths features largescale paintings, animated video, and threedimensional sculpture commissioned specifically for the exhibition. In these works, the artist envisions a mythic garden in which untamed and uncivilized nature becomes a metaphor for the pressures weighing on our societal systems. Moving forward and backward across time and memory, Hird reflects on the illusion, disruption, and disarray of today’s society.
By capturing images of current and past people, places, and events through his travels of the Northcountry—from the current exodus of asylum-seekers into Canada to the historic sites and leaders of the American Underground Railroad—the artist challenges us to consider complex ideas informing our present debates of borders, migration, privilege, and racism.
Valerie Hird: The Garden of Absolute Truths and Bill McDowell: Roxam Road to North Elba are sponsored in part by The Maslow Family Foundation and Rolf Kielman & Stephanie Spencer. Hospitality sponsors, Farrell Distributing, Prophecy Wines, and Lake Champlain Chocolates. Burlington City Arts is supported in part by NEFA through the New England Arts Resilience Fund, part of the United States Regional Arts Resilience Fund, an initiative of the U.S. Regional Arts Organizations and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, with major funding from the federal CARES Act and the American Rescue Plan Act from The National Endowment for the Arts, and by The Vermont Arts Council & The National Endowment for the Arts.
