SKIN EGO
FEBRUARY 22 – JUNE 9, 2019 1st floor, BCA Center Artist Reception: Friday, February 22, 6 - 8 p.m. Rebecca Weisman’s Skin Ego is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.
Rebecca Weisman examines subconscious and psychological spaces of identity. The artist combines video, sound, sculpture, and photography to create a large-scale, immersive installation. Skin Ego is comprised of several narrative threads that weave a story about the body’s corporeal nature. A central component of Skin Ego is the large-scale, eight by twenty foot sculptural recreation of a beached whale that visitors can enter and explore. Incorporating film and performance within her surreal environment, the artist spins a mysterious narrative between the fisherman and whale that expresses the nature of our impermanence. Project Vermont is a new series dedicated to experimentation by providing a setting for contemporary Vermont artists to push their artistic practice while creating new work. Presenting visual, performance, and interdisciplinary exploration from emerging to established artists, Project Vermont supports artists’ exploration of new ideas and challenges, enables innovation, and creates engagement between audience and artist.

Barbara Zucker, Adorned (Detail), Artist Studio, 2018
Barbara Zucker debut’s her new work, Adorned, featuring several black-and-white paintings and an installation of acrylic abstractions inspired by the stylized hairstyles of Tang dynasty tomb figures. Zucker is fascinated by the complex ways in which hair has been used by cultures to convey class, status, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and power throughout the world. Since the 1990s, the artist has explored the subject of hair in her sculpture – how it is shaped, removed, or adorned. In Adorned, Zucker transforms seemingly abstract forms into ironic, often humorous, observations on gender and culture.

Featuring film and photography, Imperfect Societies probes themes of history, trauma, and nationhood set within the trope of science fiction. In Icarus 13: The First Journey to the Sun, Kiluanji Kia Henda plunges viewers into parallel traditions at pivotal movements in Angolan history, from the politics of Marxism-Leninism to the practice of witchcraft, as told within sci-fi narratives of the Cold War. Henda employs a sense of humor and criticality in his videos and photography, which often investigates themes of identity, politics, and perceptions of post-colonialism and modernism in Africa. Vietnamese-born artist Tuan Andrew Nguyen’s work questions the individual’s relationship to history, nationhood, and cultural displacement. In Nguyen’s short film The Island, shot on the Malaysian island Pulau Bidong (once the largest and longest-operating refugee camp after the Vietnam War that also housed Nguyen and his family) we encounter a dystopian future focused on the last two people on earth.

Alm@ Pérez, Robopoem@ 1, 2016
Robopoems is an interdisciplinary project created by Alm@ Pérez (a pseudonym for Tina Escaja) that combines poetry, photography, sound, and technology that explores the intersection of robotics and humanity. Pérez creates interactive sculptures in the form of robots engraved with bilingual poetry written from the robot’s point of view. Her creations resemble insects or spiders embodying underlying anxiety and problematic relationship many of us have with technology. Through her robotic sculptures and large-scale photographs, the artist emphasizes the existential exchange between robots and humans, correlating technology with art and poetics.

NATURAL PIGMENT WORKSHOP ELIZABETH BUNSEN
In this 90 minute workshop, develop nourishing connections with others while building upon specific methods used to generate movement in Becoming Human, an exhibit currently on view at the BCA Center. This workshop offers the opportunity for non-dancers and trained dancers alike to explore creative movement in a safe, fun, and professionally guided manner. No training necessary, comfortable clothing recommended. Age 18 and over. Workshop taught by Pauline Jennings and Joshua Lacourse. Max Participants: 20.
Artist Elizabeth Bunsen will lead a workshop that explores the practice of using natural dyes to make fabric and paper creations. The session will incorporate several forms of natural materials, such as leaves, blossoms, rust, and insects demonstrating how they are used to create an array of colors. Open to beginners or avid enthusiasts, workshop participants will learn the basics of natural dyes and leave with a small work of their own. Age 18 and over. Max. Participants 12.

Students will work primarily on the potter’s wheel, learning basic throwing and forming techniques, while creating functional pieces such as mugs, cups, and bowls. Students will also be guided through the various finishing techniques using the studio’s house slips and glazes. No previous experience needed. For ceramics artists, glazing can be a daunting and mysterious process, part alchemy, part magic, and part pure luck. During this two-hour lecture, we will pull back the curtain to reveal the science behind this mysterious process. We will cover families or types of glazes, the breakdown of components in a glaze, common and less common raw materials, and the basics of what you can do to start making and troubleshooting your glazes

Discover a variety of techniques for transferring and printing images using hand-drawn, photographic or borrowed imagery. Precious Metal Clay (PMC) is a composite of 90% fine metals, 10% water and organic binder. When fired, PMC burns out the binder leaving a solid brass, silver or gold piece. In this fourweek course, a variety of techniques will be demonstrated showing the versatility of the material and students will be able to create several small pieces of wearable art, such as beads, earrings, and pendants. Do you shoot with black and white or color film and have a project idea to explore? This hybrid darkroom and digital lab class will help you refine your skill set to create the work you envision, either traditionally in the black and white darkroom, through scanning and printing in the digital lab, or both. This class will also explore ideas in contemporary photography and theory through select readings and will discuss the technical, aesthetic and conceptual aspects of your work through supportive weekly critique sessions. Class price includes darkroom and digital lab access during open lab hours. Bring a selection of recent images to the first class.
Learn the basics of making a great photograph from initial exposure to editing and printing in this comprehensive 8-week class. This class will start with an overview of camera controls and functions, including aperture, shutter speed, ISO ratings, shooting in RAW, lens choices, metering techniques and more. Organizing and editing files in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop will also be covered and students will leave with a selection of high-quality prints made on our archival Epson printer. This class will also include assignments and supportive critique sessions to discuss the composition, content, and concepts explored in your photographs. A DSLR or digital Mirrorless Rangefinder and a Mac-compatible portable hard drive or flash drive required.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECTS
Beat the winter blues! In this one-day workshop, students will create one-of-a-kind blue prints using the historic cyanotype method. Cyanotypes are made by placing negatives, large transparencies or objects on chemically coated watercolor paper, and then exposing this paper to UV light. This workshop will cover digitally preparing and printing digital negatives, hand-coating watercolor paper and making the final print using a UV light table. Chemistry, watercolor paper, and transparency film will be provided. Bring a Mac-compatible portable drive with a selection of images to the workshop.

STUDIO ACCESS MEMBERSHIP The BCA Studios at 405 Pine Street offers studio access for adults (18+) with basic experience who would like to work independently in our Drawing/Painting, Print, Clay, Jewelry, or the Darkroom/Digital Photography Labs. Each studio offers approximately 20-30 hours of open studio time per week. Trained studio assistants are on hand during all open studios hours for guidance and support. Onsite storage for supplies is included. Please contact the specific studio manager or more information or to schedule an orientation. The TAMARA EDDY CLAY STUDIO is a fully equipped, educationally-focused ceramics studio with 14 pottery wheels, three kilns, a slab roller, extruder and a wide variety of hand tools for wheel throwing, hand building and sculpting. Studio members get a personal shelf space to store their clay and work in progress. The studio provides slips, underglazes and over 100 glaze combinations. All clay must be purchased through BCA. The DARKROOM + DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY LABS offer a traditional black and white darkroom for film and print processing and a digital lab for scanning negatives and largeformat printing. The darkroom uses low-toxicity Eco-Pro chemicals and there is space provided for experimenting with alternative historic processes, matt cutting and zine making. The digital lab offers color-calibrated iMac workstations with Adobe Creative Cloud software, Epson V700/V800 film scanners and 3 large format Epson printers.
