CURRENT EXHIBITIONS
VALERIE HIRD: THE GARDEN OF ABSOLUTE TRUTHS
October 21, 2022–January 28, 2023
First Floor, BCA Center
In The Garden of Absolute Truths, Valerie Hird presents a provocative visual exploration of humanity’s shared myths and favorite childhood stories. Through a diverse vocabulary of colorful patterns and iconic symbols gathered and reimagined in large-scale paintings, animated videos, and interactive sculptures, Hird explores personal and collective identity. A visual story teller, the artist weaves together social, cultural, and political themes into updated narratives that challenge our perception of truth and its inherent contradictions. In The Garden of Absolute Truths, Hird reveals how popular culture unconsciously shapes our view of the world.
BILL MCDOWELL: ROXHAM ROAD TO NORTH ELBA
October 21, 2022–January 28, 2023
Second Floor, BCA Center
Bill McDowell explores people’s relationship to place, history, and memory in Roxham Road to North Elba. With more than 50 color photographs, McDowell captures the current exodus of asylum-seekers into Canada via Roxham Road, an irregular border crossing near Mooers, New York. He contrasts these images with photographs of historic sites and leaders associated with the American Underground Railroad who spoke, advocated, and gave their life for racial equality. By linking present and past people, places, and events, McDowell challenges us to consider complex ideas informing our present debates of borders, migration, privilege, and racism.
