FESTIVAL GUIDE ★ SUNDAY DECEMBER 31 2017
THANK YOUHHAPPY NEW YEARHENJOY THE SHOWS! This marks our 35th year of bringing our community together on New Year’s Eve for an accessible, healthy, responsible celebration centered on the arts.
....................................................................................................................................
A Message from Julia Austin
Chair, Board of Directors, First Night Burlington Welcome to the 35th annual First Night Burlington festival of the arts. It’s a delight to offer our community an amazing selection of 91 fun-filled performances, events, and activities throughout downtown Burlington on New Year’s Eve. Thanks to our terrific new collaboration with Burlington City Arts, Artistic Director Zach Williamson has programmed something for everyone at First Night: Great music. Exhilarating dance. Captivating theater. Highflying circus performances. Hilarious comedy, the colorful Dancing Dragons Parade, spectacular fireworks, and more. And thanks to an enthusiastic community who flock to First Night year after year, First Night Burlington has grown and prospered for more than a third of a century! First Night would not be possible without the stellar commitment that our sponsors make to our community. Sponsors provide us with funding to present world-class performances in an accessible, affordable, healthy, and family-friendly environment each New Year’s Eve. The extraordinary generosity of our business community, civic leaders, and donors make this a very special place to live, work, and raise a family. Special Thanks to our Title Sponsor, NorthCountry Federal Credit Union, whose generous support for First Night Burlington is now in its tenth year. Heartfelt thanks to our Sustaining Sponsors – Farrell Vending Services and Farrell Distributing. Their abiding encouragement for the arts, cultural tourism, and a healthy community have also sustained First Night and its mission for many years. We salute these organizations and the more than 100 other businesses, community groups, and individuals who make First Night possible through their gifts of time, spirit, and financial support. Come with us to celebrate the 2018 First Night Burlington with your friends, family, and loved ones. Happy New Year!
......................................................................................................
A Message from Doreen Kraft Executive Director, Burlington City Arts Dear Friends, Burlington City Arts is honored to be partnering with First Night Burlington this year to produce a vital community event that highlights the core of our mission—to connect community through the arts. For 35 years, we have had the good fortune of gathering together and celebrating on the final day of the year through First Night’s lively programming. While BCA has always been a hands-on making site at the BCA Center for First Night, this year we have been completely immersed. With 91 acts spilling into 19 venues city-wide this year, First Night is not only one of the single biggest performing arts days in the state, but it also uncovers the incredible breadth of talent present here in Vermont. And of course, we love how it showcases Burlington, a city that adores opening its doors to an enthusiastic audience, and we are thrilled to play a role in connecting artists to this audience. First Night reminds us how important music, dancing and the arts are to celebration, to gathering, to life and to our humanity. It is a wonderful way to reflect on a challenging past year and welcome the new with neighbors and friends. We hope you will join us on December 31st with your bells and buttons on!

ESPECIALLY FOR KIDS & FAMILIES Kids, strollers, cold weather – it can be a challenge! First Night works to schedule family performances in venues nearby one another in the heart of downtown. This minimizes the running around that creates challenges for parents and children attending First Night. Or, find a venue and take your coat off and stay awhile! We’ve also scheduled these activities and performances at family-friendly times between 11 am and 8 pm.

Addie is part of a thriving creative, independent music scene in the Burlington area. She is someone highly respected and admired by her artistic peers. Addie was a winner at the 2017 Young Tradition Weekend Contest in May at Waterfront Park and performs when inspired for friends and special occasions and celebrations large and small at Radio Bean, the Lamp Club Shop, Shelburne Farms, and other public and private gatherings. She writes, sings and plays with rare depth, freedom, and commitment for the people and things she knows and cares about.

Adlai Waxman
Phoenix Books, Lower Level | 4:00 - 4:40 pm
5
Eclectic singer-songwriter, musician, and composer from Williston, VT. A must-see for ardent music lovers of Randy Newman and Tom Waits. “Adlai Waxman is a songwriter’s songwriter. He’s got an emotional side, a melodic bent, lyrics that leave lyricists questioning themselves, and piano chops that define piano-ism. The left and right sides of Adlai’s brain have coffee together often and afterward; they write songs together. These songs sound a lot like Randy Newman and Marc Cohn rode the rails together on a pilgrimage to a Steely Dan concert and, upon arrival, decided to just go home and write more songs,” Dave Morriale, “Sunday Night All Folked UP!,” Baltimore, MD.
Aikido Storytelling & Performance

Aikido of Champlain Valley | 3:00 - 4:00 pm

Discover the Japanese martial art of Aikido in a creative performance that integrates conflict resolution, storytelling, and humor. The show includes a demonstration of this dynamic martial art by adults and youth. Terry Dobson, Vermont resident, former Marine and direct student of Aikido’s founder, once said “Aikido is a lot like dancing.” Experience the martial, playful and flowing aspects of this beautiful art. Aikido of Champlain Valley is a 501(c) 3 educational organization that provides scholarships to low-income youth. Visitors are always welcome!

Performed in style reminiscent of Vaudeville, Andrew Pinard presents Alejandro’s Olde Tyme Magik Showe– a wonder-filled one-man stand-up show with an emphasis on audience participation, visual magic, and physical comedy guaranteed to amuse the whole family. AmerikanaBlue
College Street Congregational Church | 8:00 - 8:40 pm

“AmerikanaBlue” is an acoustic trio that features the type of music you might have heard in a Greenwich Village coffeehouse in the late 60s. Folk songs, protest, plantation Blues, country anything that someone with a Sears guitar and an ounce of courage might get up and sing during a hootenanny!
Andric Severance Xtet
H
The FlynnSpace | 4:00 - 4:40 pm
14
From New York City to Ri De Janeiro, then to Havana, and home again to Vermont. The Andric Severance Xtet takes a Salsa-centric jazz journey, playing original music as well as significant classic salsa tunes arranged for quartet. This isn’t your grandmother’s Latin Jazz. A fiery rhythm band featuring Caleb Bronz on drums, Scott Dean on percussion, Giovanni Rovetto on bass, and Andric Severance on piano. It’s all about the rhythm.
‘Come Dance with Me!’, pianist Annemieke McLane First Baptist Church | 4:00 - 4:40 pm
H 16
This concert will present the piano in the fullest form! Music from the 1700s till the present time, filled with dances and surprises. Pianist Annemieke (Spoelstra) McLane will perform a selection of pieces by composers like Couperin, Bach, Chopin, Debussy, Granados, and Tera de Marez Oyens. Space will be filled with melodies and rhythms of joy, whispers, and stories; all with 10 fingers on the keys and some pedal effects.
Audrey Bernstein
H
The FlynnSpace | 5:00 - 5:40 pm
14
Jazz singer Audrey Bernstein embraces her longtime love and propensity for singing, pulling from her years of experiences, she fuses together her love of music with her lively spirit to create a unique and utterly fun jazz experience. “Audrey’s pitch and tone are impeccable. But it’s the emotional content that comes through. I believe her when she’s singing.” says World Class jazz musician Joey Sommerville, “it’s a genuine artistic communication with her, not one that’s scripted or choreographed. Audrey is a very sincere artist.” Described as “classic” and “endearingly sexy,” with “the chops to deliver an emotional wallop,” Audrey is spontaneous, nuanced, and swings like crazy. Rob Morse will join Ms. Bernstein on bass, Geza Carr on drums, Joe Capps on guitar, and Patricia Julien on Flute.

H
First Unitarian Universalist Meeting House | 4:00 - 4:40 pm
2
Stephen Kiernan plays guitar as you’ve never seen before. On 6-string, 8-string baritone, and 12-string guitars, he uses styles as varied as banjo picking, classical, jazz, slide, drumming, and playing with both hands on the neck. But the technique is all about producing great instrumental songs -- from toe-tapping to lyrical Irish ballads. The act is called Large Guitars because he coaxes vast sound out of acoustic instruments so that they often sound like more than one guitar is playing.

Jane Kittredge and her father, Charlie, began performing together in 1999. Upon collaborating with John Dunlop and Laura Markowitz, fellow artists with the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, their duet grew seamlessly into a quartet. In an exciting return to First Night, Tumbleweed offers a new crop of songs.

The Vermont Jazz Ensemble
Contois Auditorium, City Hall | 3:00 - 4:30 pm
H 11
The Vermont Jazz Ensemble is a 17-member instrumental music group that performs music, most of which is in the Jazz or “Big Band” style, although the repertoire also includes “Latin,” “Rock,” “Fusion,” and music which is currently “Popular.” Every performance features ensemble work, sectional and individual solos, and improvisation. The original idea of assembling an ensemble like “VJE” came about as early as 1974 when some of the current members observed that there were too few opportunities then available for musicians to express themselves through this type of group.

Wheezer & Squeezer
8
Fletcher Free Library | 7:00 - 7:40 pm
Jeremiah McLane and Timothy Cummings are a high-powered, one-of-a-kind duo who share music rooted in the traditional dance repertoire of Northwestern Europe. Masters of the piano accordion and quieter, bellows-blown bagpipes (and also whistles and piano), they create a beguiling blend which utterly subverts the typical stereotypes of their Old-World instruments. They draw from an ‘Auld Alliance’ repertoire that includes bourrées from central France, the hanter dro from Brittany, triple-time hornpipes from the Scottish Border region, and compelling originals reflecting these influences.
Whitesell Brothers Quartet
The FlynnSpace | 6:00 - 6:40 pm
H 14
The Whitesell Brothers Quartet presents original jazz music inspired by beauty, joy, and introspection. Twin brothers Jake & Sam Whitesell (saxophone & piano) have been playing music together for over two decades. They are joined by Vermont talents Robinson Morse (bass) and Geza Carr (drums).

Woodchucks’ Revenge
College Street Congregational Church | 5:00 - 5:40 pm
7
Performing this evening as a duo, Woodchucks’ Revenge “warms the audience with sparks of bluegrass, country, and blues.” Husband and wife Peter and Kristina Cady have played with a trio, quartet or as a duo for twenty-five years in performances all over Vermont and in surrounding states. They present an engaging mix of old and new folk songs on guitar and fiddle, ranging from Carter Family songs to western ballads, from New England fiddle tunes to their zany parodies of musical standards.
Young Tradition Instrument Petting Zoo Fletcher Free Library | 2:00 - 2:40 pm
H 8
A collection of instruments with the express purpose of letting people play them: the sign says ‘please touch the instruments!’ Instruments can often be the keys that help open doors to the world of traditional music and dance for children, which is at the heart of what Yong Tradition Vermont is about. The zoo is designed to facilitate the discovery of instruments, the music they can make, and the movement that goes with the music.
