Where, Oh Where Can My Little Dog Go? Here’s the scoop! Dogs and their humans are welcome in all of our parks as long as the pets are on a leash at all times and owners clean up after them. However, make no bones about it! We can’t sidestep the issue of pet waste. Pet waste is a subject everyone likes to avoid, but it’s more than just smelly and unsightly — it’s a health risk to pets and people, especially children. When it rains, pet waste left on trails, sidewalks, and grassy areas can wash into the nearest waterway. Even if you can’t see signs of water near you, the feces wash into storm drains and then travel to your neighborhood resaca, the river, and ocean untreated. Out of courtesy to others using the parks, pet owners must take responsibility and help keep our parks clean. Please bring a scooper and/or a bag when you enjoy the parks with your furry friends. We are also piloting a new initiative since the “doggy bags” often get stolen, re-use your plastic shopping bags for pet waste use and help others leave no pile behind… there are stands throughout many of our parks - you can bring a small amount of plastic bags to restock if you see them empty. Appreciation and thanks are extended to responsible pet owners who, along with their pets, respect other park users and the park system.

Hike and Bike Trails

Discover Brownsville on foot or on a bike or by paddle in our resacas or as part of the Caracara Trails. Brownsville has an extensive bike trail system that includes Brownsville Historic Battlefield Trail. Paseo de la Resaca Trails, Monte Bella Mountain Bike Trail, Belden Trail, Brownsville Sports Park Hike and Bike Trail, Resaca de la Palma State Park Trails, and Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge Bike Trail. Additional information and maps are available at the Brownsville Convention Visitors Bureau (650 Ruben M. Torres Sr. Blvd.) and Scale House Visitors Center (1700 E. 6th St.). If you are sponsoring an activity that includes the use of bike trails, there are guidelines that need to be followed. Please call (956) 546-HELP for more information.

Miscellaneous Information

To combat the damaging effects of secondhand smoke COB PARD parks and facilities are smoke free. Consuming of alcoholic beverages must have approval, usually for a special event. If you plan on having a gathering of 10 or more people at a park pavilion please contact Michelle Otero for a special events guide and application. We schedule our activities in cooperation within the City of Brownsville and local communities, but unforeseen conflicts do arise. Please be understanding when dates, times or locations have to be changed or canceled. Programs and activities come up during the year that may not be included in this guide. Look for information online at cob.parks.com or connect with us via social media @btxparks. 6

DDIVERSITY IVERSITY

Discover, Connect, Share and Enjoy! Bienvenido. Bienvenue. Willkommen. I want to welcome all of our residents, visitors, friends, and family to take part and enjoy our parks, programs, and trails as a means to improving your quality of life. Parks and Recreation plays a critical role in the success of a city’s culture; community development; individual and community health and wellness; natural environment; education and more. We work towards these goals everyday, and it is great team work. We are are very blessed to have a community who loves its parks system. Join the “PARDY”. Help us advocate for parks by participating in the 2020 Census starting March 12, 2020 all the way through July 2020. In the past 4 years we have had 5 park improvement projects because they were in areas eligible for funding - and that was because of Census data.

8

Many have benefited from funding from the Census too – Housing, Fire and Police, Historic Preservation, Special Needs, and so many more! Other ways you can advocate for parks is partner with us on our various initiatives; whether that be related to health, storm water, environmental, youth, adults, special needs, entrepreneurship, microbusinesses, and financial health - we have so many local partners and national collaborations that you can be involved too. Be sure to take a look the list of accomplishments we had in 2019 to see if our “why” aligns with yours! ---Damaris McGlone, CTRS* Director of Parks and Recreation *Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist
