BU HIGHLIGHT PARTICIPATING IN THE FIRST-YEAR STUDENT OUTREACH PROJECT (FYSOP)

“ When I was researching schools, I came across BU’s Center for Autism Research Excellence and decided to reach out to the lab’s director to learn more about undergraduate involvement in the lab. After talking to the director and researching Sargent College, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to attend a school where undergraduate research opportunities are so encouraged and abundant, especially in my exact field of interest. The resources, opportunities, professors, education—these are all things I would have never been exposed to if I hadn’t transferred. I am forever thankful that I made the switch to BU.”

“There were so many opportunities to become integrated into the larger BU community. Going to Splash, BU’s annual activities fair, helped a lot. Seeing all of the student groups to get involved with was amazing. Plus, I lived in West Campus my first year here. I was worried I would end up in a dorm with only first-year students, but there were actually a lot of sophomores as well. I made sure to talk to as many people on my floor as I could and got to know people in my major. BU does a great job making sure transfer students are included in the community and have access to all of the great opportunities here.”

“Applying to BU as a transfer student was easier than my first experience applying to college because I had a better understanding of what I wanted in a school. One of the biggest reasons I wanted to transfer to BU was because of the excellent neuroscience program here. I also knew that BU offers great research and internship opportunities, which I didn’t have at my previous school. Once I arrived on campus, I found the science classes more challenging than I anticipated, but it is very easy to interact with professors here. They were eager to help me and made my transition go smoothly.”

TRANSFERRING TO BU: THE NUTS & BOLTS.

WHO CAN TRANSFER?

If you are a high school graduate or passed a high school equivalency exam, and have completed 12 or more credits as a degree-seeking candidate at another institution of higher education, BU considers you a transfer student. Transfer students come to BU from private and public institutions, four-year colleges, and two-year community colleges. There’s no typical transfer student, but the ideal transfer student should be bright, intellectually inquisitive, and ambitious—like all of our students. Sound familiar? Great! We look forward to reading your application.

WHAT FACTORS DO WE CONSIDER?

For admission, BU most heavily considers your academic performance from your college coursework, any outside activities, and your personal interests and skill sets.

HOW DO I APPLY?

1 Determine if your school or college of interest offers transfer admission for the fall and/or spring semester. Visit bu.edu/ admissions/majors for more information.

Transfer students must apply to a specific school or college, and declare a major. Once you are enrolled at BU, you will have many opportunities to explore courses outside your major or even change your program of study through an Intra-University Transfer. View the list of available majors on pages 2–3.

2 Complete and submit the Common Application to be considered for admission.

3 Provide the required supporting credentials:

• College or university transcript(s) (International students must submit documents in their original language with translations by a licensed translator.)

• Transfer College Report(s)

(From every institution at which you have been a degree-seeking student)

• High school transcript and proof of graduation or results of a high school equivalency exam

4 Submit syllabi for all completed and current college coursework for which you wish to receive transfer credit as early as possible. We begin the transfer credit review process when we receive your syllabi, which enables us to provide you a complete credit evaluation. See details about transfer credit at go.bu.edu/ admissions/crediteval.

WILL I GET CREDIT FOR MY COLLEGE COURSEWORK?

Knowing that you have already completed significant college coursework, the BU Hub—Boston University’s innovative general education program—offers a specially tailored Transfer Student Curriculum. You will build on the work you’ve completed while developing the capacities required of all BU graduates and fulfilling Hub requirements through BU coursework. Learn more about Hub requirements at bu.edu/hub/ transfer-requirements.

Students who have completed liberal arts courses at an accredited institution with a grade of C or better are often awarded transfer credit toward graduation. Transfer credit is awarded at the discretion of the BU school or college to which you are admitted.

For coursework completed in the US, a credit evaluation will be posted online after an admissions decision is released. For coursework completed outside the US, a credit evaluation will be posted online after an enrollment deposit is submitted.

WHAT CREDITS TYPICALLY TRANSFER?

Our transfer equivalency site provides information on how some classes taken at other colleges or universities may transfer to BU. Visit the transfer equivalency tool at go.bu.edu/admissions/transferequivalency.

The basic unit of credit at BU is the semester hour. A full-time course load is 16 hours per semester, or four courses. BU accepts up to 68 credits from either two-year or four-year institutions.

FINANCIAL AID.

We aim to make BU affordable and accessible, and we encourage all students interested in transfer admission to apply for need-based financial assistance. To do so, submit both the CSS Profile™ and Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Applying for financial assistance by BU’s established deadlines ensures that you will receive full consideration for all aid for which you are eligible.

If you are eligible for need-based aid, we’ll develop a customized package for you that may include BU need-based scholarships as well as a combination of federal and state grants, federal loans, and/or on-campus student employment. If your financial aid package includes a BU need-based scholarship, the BU Scholarship Assurance guaran-

tees that your BU need-based scholarship will not be reduced in future years.

Complete financial aid information can be found at bu.edu/finaid

MERIT-BASED SCHOLARSHIPS.

Members of the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) National Honor Society may be eligible for a PTK Scholarship if nominated by their chapter advisor. For more information on the PTK Scholarship and other scholarship opportunities for transfer students, visit go.bu.edu/admissions/transferscholarships
