2009 Butler Football Returning Cast Fuels Butler Optimism Butler posted its highest victory total and its first winning record in more than a decade last season. With a majority of starters returning from that breakthrough squad, the Bulldogs are looking for another step forward in 2009. Head coach Jeff Voris has 36 lettermen, including 14 starters (seven on offense, seven on defense) back this season. Included in that group is a record-setting passing tandem, the league’s leader in quarterback sacks and a former league scoring champ. Voris can call on his top two tacklers from a year ago, four of his top five rushers and three of his top four receivers. And the Bulldogs boast seven All-PFL performers. “We’re really experienced on both sides of the ball,” noted Butler’s head coach. “We lost some key players, but we’ve had so many guys play and see action in key situations that we really can put experienced players at almost every position.” The Bulldogs compiled a 6-5 record and tied for fourth place in the Pioneer Football League in 2008. The six wins tied the second-highest total at Butler since 1993, when the Bulldogs moved from the NCAA Division II to the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). And the winning mark was Butler’s first since 1997, when the Bulldogs finished with a 6-4 record. Among the returnees from last year’s successful squad are quarterback Matt Kobli and wide receiver Dan Bohrer. Kobli set a school-record with 23 touchdown passes and a record 11 of them wound up in the hands of Bohrer. The two hooked up for nearly a thousand yards in offense. Also back are defensive end Grant Hunter, who topped the PFL in quarterback sacks with 14 a year ago, linebacker Derek Guggenberger, who’s led the Bulldogs in tackles for two straight seasons, and running back Scott Gray, who missed much of last season with injury but led the PFL in scoring two years ago.

“Matt is a special talent, and he can impact a game in a variety of ways,” noted Voris of his junior quarterback. “And Danny is our leader on offense. We won’t shy away from getting him the ball.” Bohrer won’t be the only target for Butler’s quarterbacks this fall. Five other returnees had at least 10 catches last year and four of them had more than 100 receiving yards. Junior Eddie McHale finished as the team’s third-leading receiver with 30 catches for 366 yards and six touchdowns, while sophomore Zach Watkins added 28 catches for 329 yards. Other top returning pass catchers are sophomores Stuart Harvey and Jordan Koopman. A pair of second-year players, sophomore Andrew Huck and redshirt freshman Calvin Blair, are the top returning back-ups at quarterback. Huck saw action in six games last season. The Bulldogs lost last year’s top rusher, Dionte Wiggins, but running back may have been the team’s deepest position. Gray led the team in rushing two years ago, when he scored a leagueleading 15 touchdowns. He’s the top returning tailback this season, but he’ll be pushed by redshirt sophomore Ryan Hitchcock and senior Ricky Trujillo. Hitchcock rushed for 342 yards and five touchdowns last fall, while Trujillo added a pair of rushing TDs. “We have several players who are solid PFL backs, and with the depth has come competition. We may play more than one back at the same time,” said Voris, who pointed out that the Bulldogs have regained an offensive balance since going to the spread offense last year. All of Butler’s skill players will be operating behind a veteran offensive line. Four of the five starters from last year’s offensive line are back this season, led by All-PFL guard Donny Gilmore, a starter in 22 consecutive games. Also back from last year’s front five are senior tackle Brian Crable, Offense junior tackle Mike Staniewicz It’s not a secret, the Bulldogs will and sophomore guard Pete throw the ball. Kobli turned in a banner campaign in his first full season as a Butler starter. The 6-3, 220-pound signal caller led the PFL in total offense (273.3 ypg) and ranked third in the league in passing efficiency. He passed for 2,518 yards, while completing better than 66% of his passes. He also finished as Butler’s second-leading rusher with 493 yards. Kobli was named Butler’s Offensive MVP, and he earned honorable mention allleague honors. Bohrer, one of two senior captains for the Bulldogs, became just the second player in Butler history to record more than 70 receptions in a season and just the third Bulldog with more than 900 receiving yards. His 71 catches and his 971 receiving yards were the second-most in the PFL in 2009. His performance earned him second team All-PFL recognition.

The same situation exists at the other defensive end spot, where juniors Rob Cosler and Jeff Poss each saw action in all 11 games. The defensive tackle spot will be manned by senior Tyler Skaggs and sophomore Larry Thomas. Junior Derek Bradford played in all 11 games and ﬁnished ﬁfth on the team in tackles last season, and he’s part of a solid group of returnees at linebacker. Also back are senior Brian Adika, junior Nick Comotto and redshirt sophomore Nick Caldicott, all of whom saw action last season. And they’re joined by Andrew Cottrell, a skilled transfer

from Grand Valley State who Voris says “plays the game the right way.” The defensive secondary features a pair of returning starters at cornerback, juniors Tadd Dombart and Jacob Fritz. Dombart tied for sixth on the team in tackles (42) and shared the team lead in pass interceptions with two. Fritz was eighth in tackles (40). A pair of redshirt sophomores, Mark Giacomantonio and Logan Sullivan, will contend for the free safety position. Both played in all 11 games a year ago. Voris also can call on sophomores Jack McKenna, Andy Dauch and Thorn Murphy, each of whom saw action in the defensive secondary last season.

Defense Hunter, Guggenberger and senior safety Spencer Summerville anchor a defensive group that has improved steadily over the past three seasons. “We’ve grown as a unit defensively,” said Voris. “We lost some guys up front from last year’s team, but we played so many guys that we still have experience there and we’re still strong across the board.” Hunter emerged as a force in his first season with the Bulldogs. His 14 sacks tied the second-highest total ever by a Butler player, trailing only the school-record 17 by Scott Cook in 1983. And he finished second in the PFL in total tackles for loss with 18. Guggenberger, Butler’s middle linebacker, tied for sixth in the league in tackles with 85, and he enters his final season with 153 career stops. Summerville, one of two team captains this season, finished second on the squad and 15th in the PFL in tackles with 66. All three players earned All-PFL recognition last season. Hunter will be flanked on the defensive line by several experienced returnees. Senior Pete Xander and sophomore Ross Teare shared the nose guard position last year and

Special Teams The Bulldogs have a couple of gaping holes to ﬁll on special teams. Gone from last year’s squad are placekicker and secondleading scorer Jordan Quiroz and punter Rob Blevins. Redshirt freshman Michael Wilson came out of spring drills as the team’s top punter, while sophomore David Lang emerged as the top candidate at placekicker. Lang handled team kickoff duties a year ago. Dombart, who led the PFL in punt return average (16.9) last season, heads up the punt return unit, while Koopman and Summerville were the squad’s top kick returners in 2009. Newcomers could play a key role on Butler’s special teams. 3

Head Coach Jeff Voris In just three seasons, Jeff Voris has taken Butler from an 0-11 record to the program’s first winning campaign in more than a decade! Voris, who improved Butler’s win total in each of his first three seasons, delivered the winning mark last fall by leading the Bulldogs to a 6-5 record and a tie for fourth place in the Pioneer Football League. The six wins were Butler’s most since 1997 and the second-most since the Bulldogs moved to Division I in 1993. Butler’s ffour league wins tied the Bulldogs’ highest PFL win total ever! The successful campaign came just one year after Voris guided Butler to a 47 mark in just his second season at the helm. The four victories were the most by a Butler football team since 2002 and marked another step forward for the program. In 2006, his first season as Butler’s head coach, Voris guided the Bulldogs to a 3-8 mark and a tie for fifth place in the PFL. His first victory at Butler snapped an 18-game losing streak by the Bulldogs, and the team’s three total wins matched Butler’s victory total for the previous three seasons combined. A former record-setting quarterback at DePauw University, Voris was named the 24th head football coach at Butler in December of 2005. He previously had served as head coach at Carroll (Wis.) College for five seasons, following assistant coaching stints at Edinboro, DePauw, Texas and Illinois. Voris spent five seasons rebuilding the football program at Carroll. His first team in 2001 had just 51 players. In 2005 with the squad size up to 111 players, he guided the Pioneers to a 6-4 record and a third place finish in the Midwest Conference. It was Carroll’s first winning season since 1996, and the Pioneers’ six league wins tied the school record for most MWC wins. During his five campaigns at Carroll, Voris coached one second team All-American, one honorable mention All-American, 11 first team all-conference players and 30 academic all-conference performers. He coached an all-conference quarterback in four of his five seasons. Carroll teams broke 10 school records for offense and special teams during his tenure, and his 2005 squad ranked fourth in the NCAA Division III in punt return average. Voris took the Carroll head coaching position after spending one season on the staff of head coach Lou Tepper at Edinboro. He previously served under head coach Nick Mourouzis at DePauw. During his four seasons as offensive coordinator at DePauw, the Tigers compiled a 29-11 record, won one conference championship and posted four consecutive wins over Wabash in the Monon Bell Classic. He coached an all-conference quarterback in 1996 and 1997, and DePauw ranked eighth in the NCAA Division III in passing offense in 1996. DePauw also ranked first in Division III in turnover margin in 1996 and eighth in turnover margin in 1998. He was the head junior varsity coach at DePauw in 1994-95, and he served as strength and conditioning coach for the Tigers in all six seasons. Voris began his collegiate coaching career in 1990 as a graduate assistant at Illinois. During his two seasons with the Illini, he assisted with defensive backs and outside linebackers. He later spent two seasons at Texas, where he worked with wide receivers and the offensive line. The Butler coach was a four-year starting quarterback at DePauw, 1986-89. He was a three-time team Most Valuable Player and a team captain in 1989. He earned honorable mention All-America recognition in 1988 and 1989, and he still holds 4

DePauw career football records for most passing yards (6,035), most touchdown passes (56), most pass completions (504), most pass attempts (910) and most total offense (5,754). He set single game records with 38 completions against Findlay in 1987 and ﬁve touchdown passes against Taylor in 1988, and he’s the only player in DePauw football history to lead the Tigers in passing for four consecutive seasons! He was inducted into the DePauw Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009. Voris earned a bachelor’s degree in health, physical education and recreation from DePauw in 1989 and a master’s degree in athletic administration from Illinois in 1991. He and his wife, Julie, are parents of three children, Jenna (13), Josie (11) and Jessy (8).

Assistant Coaches Neil Kazmierczak Defensive Coordinator Neil Kazmierczak is in his fourth season as defensive coordinator at Butler, after spending five seasons as the defensive coordinator at DePauw University. He helped DePauw to a pair of conference titles, and the Tigers’ defensive unit ranked first in the conference in fewest points allowed in 2004. Prior to joining the staff at DePauw, Kazmierczak served as linebackers coach at Saint Mary’s College (Calif.) for one season (1999) and as defensive coordinator for Ritsumeikan University in Japan for one season (1998). He also had coaching stints at Stanford University (199598), Oxnard, Calif., High School (1993-95) and John Marshall High School (Calif., 1990-93). Kazmierczak was a three-year varsity football player at Michigan State University. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State in 1998, a master’s degree from Azusa Pacific in 1995 and a master’s degree from Stanford in 1998. He and his wife, Frezewd, are parents of three children, Zach (7), Saron (7) and Caleb (5).

Frank Smith Offensive Coordinator Frank Smith, in his fourth season as Butler’s offensive line coach and his third season as offensive coordinator for the Bulldogs. He joined Butler’s staff after serving as a graduate assistant coach at Miami (Ohio) University, 2004-05. During his two seasons at Miami, the Redhawks won two Mid-American Conference East Division Championships and played in the 2004 Independence Bowl. Smith was a three-year starter as an offensive lineman at Miami. He was named the team’s Offensive Lineman of the Year in 2001, and he helped the Redhawks win the GMAC Bowl in 2003. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Miami in 2004. Smith and his wife, Kelly, will celebrate their ﬁrst anniversary next June.

Joe Cheshire Linebackers Joe Cheshire is in his fifth season as a full-time assistant coach, following one season with the Bulldogs as a part-time assistant. He currently handles the team’s linebackers, while also serving as Butler’s recruiting coordinator. Cheshire joined the Bulldogs in 2004, after spending two seasons as offensive backs coach at DePauw University. In his final season at DePauw, the Tigers led the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in rushing yards per game. The son of former Butler football player Jim Cheshire (75), Joe was a four-year football letterwinner at DePauw. He was the Tigers’ offensive Most Valuable Player in 1997, and he served as a football team captain in 1998. He earned all-conference recognition as a junior, when he led DePauw in pass receiving. Cheshire received a B. A. degree from DePauw in 1999 and began a brief business career before returning to the football field in 2002. He and his wife, Ashleigh, have two children, Griffin and Charlotte.

Ed Reed Running Backs Ed Reed is in his second season as Butler’s running backs coach. A Wellness teacher in Carmel Clay Schools, Reed boasts more than two decades of coaching expierence at the high school level. He coached running backs at Carmel High School for 20 years, while also serving as offensive coordinator for six years. He spent two seasons coaching at Noblesville High School before coming to Butler. Reed earned his undergraduate degree from Anderson University (‘82) and a master’s degree from Georgetown (Ky.). He and his wife, Lori, have two children, Jessica and Adam.

David Kenney Defensive Line David Kenney is in his fourth season on Butler’s coaching staff, and he has responsibility for the Bulldogs’ defensive line. He joined the Bulldogs after spending one season as head coach and defensive coordinator of the Washington Township Travel Team (IEFA) and two seasons as an assistant football coach at North Central High School. Kenney was a defensive tackle and nose guard for three seasons at Tuskegee University, where he earned a B. S. Degree in 1996. He and his wife, Kristen, are parents of four children, Devante (16), David (14), Khirra (9) and Dakari (8). He’s a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

Nick Anderson Wide Receiver Receivers Nick Anderson is in his third season with the Bulldogs, taking over this year as wide receivers’ coach. He previously spent two seasons as an assistant football coach at Indianapolis Manual High School and one year as an assistant coach at LaVille High School. He began his collegiate playing career at Eastern Kentucky University in 1997, before transferring to Quincy University, where he was a starting defensive back. Anderson, a 2003 Quincy graduate, has played semi-pro football for the past ﬁve years.

Danny Sears Cornerback Cornerbacks Danny Sears, a former standout wide receiver at Franklin College, is in his third season at Butler, and he’s responsible for the team’s cornerbacks. Sears was a threetime, ﬁrst team All-Heartland Conference wide receiver (2004-06) and a two-time conference Special Teams MVP (2004 & 2006) as a punt and kick returner. He ﬁnished his collegiate career with over 2,000 receiving yards and 20 career touchdown catches. The four-year letterwinner for the Grizzlies compiled over 5,000 all-purpose yards, 2003-06.

Chris Davis Tight Ends Chris Davis, who earned two varsity letters ers as an of offensive lineman with the Bulldogs, is in his second season on the Butler staff. He’s coaching Butler’s tight ends. Davis began his senior season with the Bulldogs as a starting offensive tackle, only to be sidelined by injury for the third time in his career. He was named to the Pioneer Football League Academic Honor Roll three times, and he graduated with a degree in secondary education in the spring of 2008.

Rob Noel Defensive Line Rob Noel, a four-year letterwinner with the Bulldogs (2005-08), has joined Butler’s staff as a student assistant coach working with the team’s defensive line. Noel, who played both guard and tackle for the Bulldogs, set a Butler career record for games played (44), and he was in the Bulldogs’ starting lineup in his ﬁnal 22 games. He earned All-League honors as an offensive lineman, and he was a two-time Academic All-League player. Noel earned his degree from Butler last spring.

Chart Climbing Wide receiver Dan Bohrer turned in one of the most prolific pass catching seasons in Butler football history in 2008, and his effort boosted him toward the top of Butler’s career receiving lists. Heading into his final campaign, Bohrer stands second on Butler’s alltime list for pass receptions and sixth on the school’s all-time list for receiving yards. He needs just two catches to tie the Butler all-time record of 142, held by Eric Voss (1990-93), and he’s 406 yards shy of the all-time Butler mark of 2,176 receiving yards, also held by Voss. Bohrer needs three touchdown catches to tie the Butler all-time record of 15, held by Mike Chrobot (1975-78).

Team Competition Champs: Butler’s off-season team competition was won this year by Team Summerville, led by senior captain Spencer Summerville. The returning seniors on this year’s squad drafted teams from among the remaining returning players, and those teams then held an off-season competition involving academics, community service, conditioning and weight training and spring practice. Points were awarded in each area to determine an overall winner. Football Support Services Sports Medicine Butler student-athletes have access to a comprehensive sports medicine program that focuses on the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic-related injuries. Under the supervision of a staff of certiﬁed athletic trainers, Butler’s athletes are served by an extensive team of physicians and health care professionals. The Bulldogs’ training room is located on the west end of Hinkle Fieldhouse. Renovation in the summer Ryan Galloy of 1998 allowed the training room to be divided into Head Athletic Trainer dedicated areas for rehabilitation/injury management and athlete preparation. Butler’s athletic training staff provides care for Butler studentathletes at practices and games, while also maintaining daily hours for treatment and rehabilitation. The staff also works to educate Butler’s student-athletes in the areas of injury prevention, nutrition and various wellness issues. Butler’s sports medicine program utilizes the extensive medical community in Indianapolis, which boasts one of the largest and most knowledgeable groups of sports medicine professionals in the nation. Butler student-athletes have access in Indianapolis to world-renowned medical facilities, as well as many of the leading physicians in the world of sports medicine.

Strength & Conditioning Butler athletes beneﬁt from an extensive strength and conditioning program under the direction of a full-time strength and conditioning coordinator. The purpose of Butler’s strength training program is twofold. One is to reduce the risk of injury and the second is to increase performance potential. By increasing the strength of each athlete’s muscles, bones and connective tissues, the chance of incurring an injury while performing lessens. The increase in functional strength is also an important step toward Butler athletes realizing their athletic potential. The strength and conditioning program stresses ﬂexibility, agility, jumping skills, speed and reaction time, as well as strength. The program utilizes free weights, strength machinery, manual resistance and additional innovative techniques to help maximize the chance for Butler athletes to succeed. The center of Butler’s strength and conditioning program is the 4,000-square foot weight training room located in Hinkle Fieldhouse. The weight room, which features an entire outside wall of glass, is stocked with free weights, weight machines, stationary bikes, stairmasters, and related apparatus, and allows Butler athletes to train in an open and comfortable environment.

Academic Support/Student Development Balancing the demands of NCAA Division I athletics with the responsibilities of a rigorous academic schedule is one of the biggest challenges facing collegiate student-athletes. To help ease that challenge Butler provides a dedicated academic support system. The Athletic Academic Support Ofﬁces are located in Hinkle Fieldhouse, where the staff is available to assist student-athletes in solving academic and nonacademic problems. Butler offers its student-athletes academic and career counseling, guidance in study skills and time management, and academic tutoring. The academic staff monitors each student-athlete’s progress toward Butler’s degree requirements. Support services for student-athletes are provided on a by-need or by-student/coach request basis. Butler teams and student-athletes have won numerous league and national academic awards. The football team had six players named to the Pioneer Football League Academic All-League team in 2008.

Butler Bowl

The Butler Bowl, home to Butler football for eight decades, received a major face-lift for the 2005 season. Located on the northeast side of Butler’s campus just east of storied Hinkle Fieldhouse, the Butler Bowl was renovated as part of a project to build new student housing along the east side of the stadium. The project began during the summer of 2005 with the removal of the Hilton U. Brown Theatre, located in the south end zone, and the demolition of the east stands. A new field turf surface replaced the former grass field and a new scoreboard was added to the south end zone. The field itself was raised by nearly eight feet and moved slightly to the south. The future plans for the Butler Bowl include additional permanent seating on the west (home) side of the stadium and portable temporary seating on the east (visitor’s) side. A design has been submitted for a new pressbox building, which would include public restrooms and a concession stand. The plan also has a provision for adding lights to the field. The original Butler Bowl was designed as part of a massive project developed to give Butler University one of the finest athletic plants in the nation. Construction on the Bowl was completed in time for the start of the 1928 football season, and Butler inaugurated the stadium by defeating Franklin, 55-0. The Bowl opened with seating for 36,000 spectators. The first major change to the Bowl came in 1955, when the Hilton U. Brown Theatre was constructed in the south end zone. The huge outdoor theater replaced 16,000 seats and gave Butler one of the premier open-air stage facilities in the Midwest. For years, the Hilton U. Brown Theatre served as the summer home for Starlight Musicals, which brought the best in off-Broadway performances to Indianapolis. The Bulldogs have compiled a 250-139-11 record in 80 seasons in the Butler Bowl.

The Butler Bowl currently has permanent seating for 2,500 fans, plus additional lawn seating. Future plans for the stadium include permanent seating for 6,000 fans.

Butler Athletics

Nike is the official provider of apparel, footwear and equipment for Butler athletics.

Butler was ranked as one of the “Top 50” men’s basketball programs since 1984-85 by ESPN in the summer of 2008. The Bulldogs have posted an 85-17 record and three NCAA Tournament appearances in the last three years.

Eighteen of Butler’s 19 intercollegiate teams compete in the Horizon League, along with Cleveland State, Detroit, UIC, Loyola, UWGreen Bay, UW-Milwaukee, Valparaiso, Wright State and Youngstown State. The Butler football program is affiliated with the Pioneer Football League, which includes Campbell, Dayton, Drake, San Diego, Valparaiso, Davidson, Morehead State and Jacksonville. All of Butler’s teams compete at the NCAA Division I level. It was clear from the earliest days that athletics was destined to play a major role in shaping Butler University. When the school moved to its current Fairview Campus location in the 1920’s, two of the first structures completed were a 15,000seat fieldhouse and a 36,000-seat football stadium. The fieldhouse, which was the largest of its kind when it was completed in 1928, is now a historical landmark. The Butler Fieldhouse, renamed Hinkle Fieldhouse in 1966, came to symbolize not only Butler athletics, but also “Hoosier Hysteria” in Indiana. The building became the combined home of Butler basketball and the Indiana High School State Tournament. The legends of Indiana basketball, from Oscar Robertson to George McGinnis to Larry Bird, all played in the Fieldhouse at one time or another. The football stadium, named the Butler Bowl, was down-sized from 36,000 seats to a 20,000-seat stadium in the mid-1950’s, and then underwent another

major overhaul, including the addition of a new Pro Grass surface, in the summer of 2005. Currently, the Butler Bowl is home to Butler’s football and soccer teams. While Hinkle Fieldhouse provided a nationally acclaimed setting for Butler athletics, it was Paul D. “Tony” Hinkle who brought national recognition to the school as a coach and athletic administrator. He came to Butler in 1921 and remained with the University until his death in 1992. Hinkle served as a teacher, coach and athletic administrator for nearly half a century, and he compiled more than 1,000 victories as coach of Butler’s football, basketball and baseball teams. He made a particular impact on Butler’s basketball program, winning 560 games from 1926 to 1970. Hinkle is enshrined in the James Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. The Bulldogs have carried on the winning tradition set forth by Hinkle. In the past decade, Butler teams have captured 41 conference championships. The Bulldogs have made appearances in NCAA National Championships in men’s and women’s basketball, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, lacrosse, men’s tennis, men’s and women’s track and baseball. Butler captured the James J. McCafferty trophy, awarded annually by the Horizon League for all-sports excellence based on conference championship points, in six of the last 14 seasons.

Barry Collier, former men’s basketball coach at Nebraska and Butler, was named director of athletics at Butler in August of 2006. The appointment returned Collier to his alma mater. Collier began his head coaching career at Butler in 1989. In 11 seasons, he guided the Bulldogs to a 196-132 record, including a school-record ﬁve 20-win seasons. He led Butler to ﬁve league regular season and tournament championships, three NCAA Tournament bids and two trips to the NIT. He was named league Coach of the Year four times. Collier was a two-year basketball letterwinner at Butler, 1974-76. He was a team captain, all-league performer and co-MVP in 1975-76, and he was inducted into Butler’s Athletic Hall of Fame in the summer of 2006. He earned a B.A. degree from Butler in 1976 and a Master’s Degree from Indiana State in 1977.

Butler’s Lauren Showers became just the second player in Horizon League history to be named to the women’s golf All-League team for four consecutive years.
