2009 Outlook Bulldogs Look For Continued Success In 2009

Butler’s march forward in men’s soccer took a huge leap last season when the Bulldogs tied the fourth-highest win total in school history and became the first Horizon League team since 2003 to finish with an unbeaten league record! The Bulldogs posted a 13-3-4 overall record, a 5-0-2 Horizon League mark and cracked the “Top 25” in the national soccer polls, reaching as high as No. 21. That level of success has created a new dynamic for the Bulldogs as they head into the 2009 season. Butler won’t be flying under the radar. “Expectations are high and we’re excited,” said Butler head coach Kelly Findley, who has delivered back-to-back winning seasons for the Bulldogs. There’s good reason for optimism in the Bulldogs’ camp this fall. Findley has 22 letterwinners back from last year’s successful squad, including eight returning starters. The Bulldogs, who set school records for fewest goals allowed (16) and goals against average (0.76) in 2008, have their entire defensive back line returning, as well as the two goalkeepers who helped Butler to a school-record 10 shutouts. Findley also returns a solid corps in the midfield. But the fourth-year head coach does have a couple of major holes to fill. Frank Patano and Eduardo Garcia combined to score better than 40% of Butler’s points last season and both are gone. Patano tallied 12 goals and 13 assists, and he led the Horizon League in scoring for a second consecutive season. Garcia finished third in the NCAA Division I with a schoolrecord 13 assists, and he wound up second on the team in scoring with 19 points. “Frank and Eddie were exceptional players and they’ll be missed,” noted Findley. “But we have very talented players returning and a strong group of new guys who can contribute.”

Kyle Pateros tallied six goals and tied for third on the team in scoring a year ago.

Goalkeeper Nick Hegeman recorded seven shutouts and a 0.77 goals against average in 2008.

As the scoring options develop, Findley can rely on a strong defensive presence led by a pair returning All-League performers, senior goalkeeper Nick Hegeman and sophomore back Matt Hedges. Hegeman, a second team All-League pick last season, was Butler’s starting goalkeeper in 16 matches, and he posted seven shutouts. He ranked third in the Horizon League and 28th in the NCAA Division I in goals against average (0.77), and he finished fourth in the league in save percentage (.783). Hedges, who was named to the league’s All-Newcomer team, started all 20 matches in his initial season with the Bulldogs. Also returning to the backfield are senior Kyle VondenBenken and juniors Conner Burt and Brett Heinz. All three started all 20 matches a year ago, and each contributed to Butler’s stingy defensive yield. Additional backfield help could come from senior Austin Evans, junior transfer JC Aikenhead, sophomore Ben Kissick and freshmen Jared Isenthal and Jordan Burt. Evans started 20 matches for the Bulldogs two years ago, and Kissick saw action in 14 matches last year. Aikenhead played in 27 matches at Northern Illinois over the past two seasons, while Burt was named Northern Indiana Player of the Year at Concord High School last fall. Isenthal earned AllState honors at Carmel High School last year. Findley further can call on a trio of returnees, seniors Adam Burch and Jared Gillespie and sophomore Scott Vail, on the back line or at midfield. The goalkeeper position behind Hegeman is equally deep. Senior Fabian Knopfler started four matches last year and posted three shutouts. He has 20 starts, five shutouts and a 1.33 goals against average for his career. Redshirt freshman Nick Powell and freshman Jon Dawson add talent and depth.

Offensively, the Bulldogs will look first to a pair of returning All-League players, senior Boris Gatzky and junior Kyle Pateros. Gatzky earned second team All-League honors for the second straight season, while starting 19 of 20 matches as a midfielder for the Bulldogs. He tied for third in the league in assists with six and added four goals. Pateros, another second team All-League pick who started 19 matches, was second on the team in goals scored with six, and he tied with Gatzky for third on the squad in scoring with 14 points. “We expect Boris to play a larger role in our points this season,” noted Findley. “And Kyle has shown an ability to score goals.” Additional scoring support should come from a host of returnees, including juniors Ben Sippola, Jacob Capito, Troy Blewitt and Matt Sall. Sippola finished fifth on the team in scoring last year with three goals and four assists, while Capito added a pair of assists. Blewitt saw action in all 20 matches, while Sall played in 19. Other returnees who could challenge up front are juniors Dustin Mares and Michael Clayton and sophomore Lucas Eichhorn. A trio of talented newcomers are contending at the forward position and any or all could be major contributors this season. Freshman Tyler Pollock, who led the Dayton area in scoring last fall, was a high school All-American at Beaver Creek, Ohio, High School, while freshman Julian Cardona was named Soccer Player of the Year at Shattuck-St. Mary’s High School in Minnesota. Freshman Blake Leyden was named All-American and National Player of the Year for the National Christian Schools Athletic Association (NCSAA) after scoring 27 goals at Covenant Christian High School in Indianapolis last year.

Why Bulldogs? Prior to 1919, Butler’s athletic teams were known as the “Christians.” But numerous losses in the 1919 football season caused Butler followers to grow weary of that nickname. During the week leading up to Butler’s football game with the heated rival Franklin “Baptists,” Butler Collegian editor Alex Cavins and his staff, which included cartoonist George Kickson, decided something hot needed to be conceived for the school’s weekly pep session. About that time, the mascot of a Butler fraternity - a bulldog named Shimmy - wandered into the Collegian office. The idea was born! The next day, the school paper came out with a big page one cartoon showing Shimmy the Bulldog, labled Butler, taking a bite our of the pants seat of a figure labled “John the Baptist.” The caption was: “Bring on that platter, Salome!” (Butler lost the game to Franklin, 14-0, but the name “Bulldogs” stuck.)

Head Coach Kelly Findley

Kelly Findley is in his fourth season with the Bulldogs, and he’s coming off the best campaign of his young head coaching career. He was named Butler’s fifth men’s soccer coach in December of 2005, following a five-year stint on the men’s soccer staff at Charlotte. Findley guided the Bulldogs to a tie for the fourth-highest win total in school history in 2008. The 13-3-4 Bulldogs topped the Horizon League in wins and posted Butler’s highest winning percentage since 1998. Butler won the season-opening Louisville Tournament, became the first Horizon League team since 2003 to post an unbeaten (5-0-3) league record, placed runner-up in the Horizon League regular season race and earned a “Top 25” ranking in the national soccer polls. Among Butler’s 13 wins was a 1-0 victory over #4-ranked and eventual league champ UIC. It took less than 24 months for Findley to deliver a winning season. He guided Butler to a 9-7-4 record in 2007, the team’s first winning campaign in three years. The Bulldogs tied for fourth in the Horizon League with a 4-2-2 mark, Butler’s best league record since 2004. Along the way, the Bulldogs picked up a championship at the Courtyard By Marriott Flyer Classic and a runner-up finish at the Northern Illinois adidas/Baymont Inn Invitational. Butler ended the season with wins in five of its final six matches. In his initial season at Butler, Findley guided the Bulldogs to a 7-11-2 campaign and a sixth place finish in the Horizon League. The Bulldogs were involved in six overtime matches and seven of the team’s 11 setbacks came by a single goal. Butler won two of its final three regular-season matches, with the lone setback over that stretch coming to No. 20-ranked Indiana, 4-2. Butler’s biggest win of the season came nine days earlier when the Bulldogs upset No. 17 UIC, 1-0. Findley came to Butler from Charlotte, where he served for three

seasons as an assistant coach and for two seasons as associate head coach. During his tenure at Charlotte, the 49ers compiled a 42-40-14 record, including an 11-7-1 mark in 2004. In his third season at Charlotte, the 49ers reached the finals of the C-USA Tournament for only the second time in school history only to lose the title on penalty kicks. Findley served as head coach at Mars Hill College for two seasons, 1999-2000. He guided the Lions to a 17-22 mark over the two seasons, including a 10-8 overall record and a runner-up finish in the South Atlantic Conference in 2000. He also spent one season as an assistant coach at Miami (Ohio) University, two seasons as an assistant coach with the Charlotte Eagles professional soccer team and one season as an assistant coach at Judson College. During his tenure with the Charlotte Eagles, the professional club won two South Atlantic Division Championships, made two playoff appearances and posted a national runner-up finish! Findley was a four-time Most Valuable Player as an undergraduate on the men’s soccer team at Judson in Elgin, Ill. He was a three-time NAIA All-American, a three-time NCCAA All-American, and a two-time NSCAA All-American as a midfielder. He was named the Northern Illinois Intercollegiate Conference Player of the Year for three consecutive seasons, and he was named Judson’s Athlete of the Year in 1990. Findley helped Judson to its first NCCAA National Tournament championship in 1991, and he finished his collegiate career in fifth place on Judson’s all-time assist chart with 48 career assists. He was named to Judson’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005. Following his collegiate career, Findley played professional soccer with the Charlotte Eagles for six seasons. He helped the Eagles to three South Atlantic Division Championships, five divisional playoff appearances and two trips to the national finals. Findley, a former North Carolina ODP State Team coach, holds a USSF “A” license and a NSCAA Premier Diploma. He and his wife, Joanne, have five children, Gabriel, Elysia, Corinne, Stephen and Keane. Assistant Coaches/Support David Costa

Assistant Coach

David Costa is in his fourth season as an assistant coach for the Butler men’s soccer team. He serves as the Bulldogs’ recruiting coordinator, while assisting head coach Kelly Findley in all areas of the program. Costa joined Butler’s staff in 2006 after spending one season as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. In addition to his soccer coaching duties at Charlotte, Costa served as Community Services Coordinator in the Charlotte 49ers Athletic Academic Center. He also served as a Soccer Trainer/Game Coach for the Charlotte United Futbol Club, 2004-06. Costa was a four-year varsity soccer player at Charlotte, 2000-03, during the time that Findley was serving as an assistant coach for the 49ers. He played in 42 matches during his collegiate career, and he received the David Schlee Memorial Award for determination and desire to succeed as a member of the men’s soccer program. In his senior season, Costa helped the 49ers reach the finals of the Conference USA Men’s Soccer Championship for just the second time in school history. During his tenure on the men’s soccer team, Costa assisted with the NCAA-sponsored Youth Education through Sports (YES) clinic three times. In addition to his coaching duties at Butler, Costa serves as the head coach for Carmel United in Carmel, Ind. During the summer of 2008, he guided Carmel United to the U. S. Soccer Development Academy Finals Week U-15/16 Championship at the U. S. Soccer National Training Center in Carson, Calif. His team finished the summer season with a 25-2-7 record, including four consecutive victories in California to claim the national title. Last summer, he led the Carmel squad to the 2009 U. S. Soccer Development Academy Finals Week U-17/18 Championship in Carson. In two trips to the Academy Finals Week, Costa’s squad’s compiled a 6-0-2 record. Costa earned B.A. degrees in psychology and history in 2004 and a Master’s Degree in Liberal Studies from Charlotte in 2005.

Bryce Cooper Assistant Coach

Bryce Cooper, former head coach at Roncalli High School in Indianapolis, is in his first season as an assistant coach at Butler. He serves as the team’s primary fitness, strength and conditioning trainer, while assisting with other coaching duties. Cooper was at the helm for the two best soccer seasons in Roncalli school history, guiding the Rebels to a two-year, 35-10-0 record, two sectional championships and two regional titles. He was named the Indianapolis Star Super Team “Coach of the Year” in 2007. Prior to taking the position at Roncalli, Cooper served as head assistant coach at Bloomington North High School, helping the Cougars to a 2005 Hoosier Cup title, a sectional title and a regional crown. In addition to his high school coaching work, Cooper has been active on the club level. He’s coached club teams in Evansville, Greenwood and Noblesville and has been involved in the Indiana ODP for the past two years. He’s currently the ‘96 Indiana ODP boys assistant coach. Cooper was a member of the men’s soccer team at Southern Indiana, helping the Screaming Eagles to three conference tournament appearances and a 2003 national ranking. He earned a B. S. degree in 2004, and he currently holds a USSF “D” license and a NSCAA “National” license.

Assistant Coach

Steve Cox is in his first season as an assistant coach with the Bulldogs. He was named to Coach Kelly Findley’s staff in July, and he handles the technical and tactical training of Butler’s goalkeepers. Cox boasts an extensive background in coaching, both on the collegiate and club levels. He is the founder and director of USA Goalkeeping Academy, and he serves as the goalkeeping trainer for Noblesville United Soccer Club. He further was assigned as the Indiana ODP Goalkeeping Coach in the fall of 2008, and he previously served as an assistant coach for the ‘93 Indiana ODP boys state team. Cox also served as men’s and women’s assistant coach at Trinity International University in Deerfield, Ill. A four-year starter and two-year captain on the men’s soccer team at Houghton College, Cox earned NAIA honorable mention All-America recognition as a senior. He played in the Premier Development League with the Chicago Eagles, and the Toronto, Canada, native was a member of the U-17 and U-20 Canadian National Team programs. He currently holds a USSF “D” license.

Student Assistant Coach Frank Patano, who completed his college playing career a year ago as one of the all-time leading scorers in Butler men’s soccer history, has returned this season to help the Bulldogs as a student assistant coach. He’ll assist head coach Kelly Findley with game-day coaching, training and travel. Patano was a four-year letterwiner for the Bulldogs, 2005-08. He led Butler in scoring for three straight seasons and topped the Horizon League in scoring in each of his final two campaigns. He finished his career in fifth place on Butler’s all-time list for goals (36) and in sixth place on the Bulldogs’ all-time list for points (83). His 15 goals in 2007 are the fourth-most in school history, and he’s one of just nine Butler players to score three goals in a match. A forward from Franklin Park, Ill., Patano earned first team All-Horizon League recognition in 2008 and second team All-League honors in 2007. He was named to the All-Great Lakes Region team for two consecutive years, and he was named Butler’s Most Valuable Player in 2007.

Bulldogs Are Tabbed Third In Horizon League Preseason Poll Horizon League men’s soccer coaches picked defending champion UIC as the preseason favorite in the 2009 league race. The Flames received six of nine first place votes and 62 points in the annual poll. Loyola (56 points), winner of last year’s Horizon League Tournament, picked up two first place votes and was tabbed second in the poll, while Butler (49) received the remaining first place vote and was picked third. Cleveland State (44) was picked fourth, followed by Green Bay (38), Valparaiso (25), Milwaukee (22), Wright State (16) and Detroit (12).

The five faculty and 113 students present when Butler University opened in 1855 laid a solid foundation for 154 years of creative change and progress. Today’s more than 4,000 students continue to look ahead while treasuring the traditions unique to Butler. The young school, originally named North Western Christian University, was unusually innovative. It was the first in Indiana, and only the third in the nation, to admit women on an equal basis with men. With the appointment in 1858 of Catherine Merrill as Demia Butler Professor of English, the institution became the second in the country to appoint a woman faculty member, the first to establish an endowed chair specifically for a female professor and the first to establish a professorship in English literature. The school was also the first in Indiana to allow its students, with parental consent, to choose subjects under a new “elective” system. As Indianapolis grew, the city’s commercial district began to penetrate the heavily-wooded campus at what is now the corner of Thirteenth Street and College Avenue. In 1873, the board of directors decided to sell the downtown campus and accept a gift of 25 acres in Irvington, then a suburb east of Indianapolis. In 1877, North Western Christian University became Butler University, taking the name of its founder, Indianapolis attorney Ovid Butler. Butler moved again 50 years later, as the “Circle City” continued to grow. In 1928, classes were held for the first time in Jordan Hall, an imposing new Gothic structure erected on the beautiful Fairview Park Site, a wooded tract north of the city on the White River and the Inland Waterway Canal. Today’s students come from nearly every state in the nation and from many foreign countries to enroll in degree programs in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, or in one of four professional colleges -- Business Administration, Education, Fine Arts or Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Butler is one of only 21 private schools in the country offering a pharmacy program. True to the vision of its founders, the University continues to offer an array of professional and pre-professional programs within the context of a strong commitment to the traditional arts and sciences and to the values of liberal education. Butler continues to welcome highly motivated, intellectually curious men and women, and to prepare them for lives of professional and community service and creative, ethical action. McCafferty Trophy

The James J. McCafferty Trophy is presented annually to the Horizon League’s All-Sports champion. A symbol of a successful broad-based athletic program, the McCafferty Trophy is awarded to the league member compiling the greatest number of performance points in league championships. Schools earn performance points based on their finish in all 18 championship sports offered by the Horizon League. For the sports of men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and softball, points are awarded based on combined regular season and championship finish. In all other sports, points are based on finish in the championship. Butler was ranked as one of the “Top 50” men’s basketball programs since 1984-85 by ESPN in the summer of 2008. The Bulldogs have posted an 85-17 record and three NCAA Tournament appearances in the last three years.

Eighteen of Butler’s 19 intercollegiate teams compete in the Horizon League, along with Cleveland State, Detroit, UIC, Loyola, UWGreen Bay, UW-Milwaukee, Valparaiso, Wright State and Youngstown State. The Butler football program is affiliated with the Pioneer Football League, which includes Campbell, Dayton, Drake, San Diego, Valparaiso, Davidson, Morehead State and Jacksonville. All of Butler’s teams compete at the NCAA Division I level. It was clear from the earliest days that athletics was destined to play a major role in shaping Butler University. When the school moved to its current Fairview Campus location in the 1920’s, two of the first structures completed were a 15,000seat fieldhouse and a 36,000-seat football stadium. The fieldhouse, which was the largest of its kind when it was completed in 1928, is now a historical landmark. The Butler Fieldhouse, renamed Hinkle Fieldhouse in 1966, came to symbolize not only Butler athletics, but also “Hoosier Hysteria” in Indiana. The building became the combined home of Butler basketball and the Indiana High School State Tournament. The legends of Indiana basketball, from Oscar Robertson to George McGinnis to Larry Bird, all played in the Fieldhouse at one time or another. The football stadium, named the Butler Bowl, was down-sized from 36,000 seats to a 20,000-seat stadium in the mid-1950’s, and then underwent another

major overhaul, including the addition of a new Pro Grass surface, in the summer of 2005. Currently, the Butler Bowl is home to Butler’s football and soccer teams. While Hinkle Fieldhouse provided a nationally acclaimed setting for Butler athletics, it was Paul D. “Tony” Hinkle who brought national recognition to the school as a coach and athletic administrator. He came to Butler in 1921 and remained with the University until his death in 1992. Hinkle served as a teacher, coach and athletic administrator for nearly half a century, and he compiled more than 1,000 victories as coach of Butler’s football, basketball and baseball teams. He made a particular impact on Butler’s basketball program, winning 560 games from 1926 to 1970. Hinkle is enshrined in the James Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. The Bulldogs have carried on the winning tradition set forth by Hinkle. In the past decade, Butler teams have captured 41 conference championships. The Bulldogs have made appearances in NCAA National Championships in men’s and women’s basketball, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, lacrosse, men’s tennis, men’s and women’s track and baseball. Butler captured the James J. McCafferty trophy, awarded annually by the Horizon League for all-sports excellence based on conference championship points, in six of the last 14 seasons.

Butler’s Lauren Showers became just the second player in Horizon League history to be named to the women’s golf All-League team for four conscutive years.

Nike is the official provider of apparel, footwear and equipment for Butler athletics.

Barry Collier, former men’s basketball coach at Nebraska and Butler, was named director of athletics at Butler in August of 2006. The appointment returned Collier to his alma mater. Collier began his head coaching career at Butler in 1989. In 11 seasons, he guided the Bulldogs to a 196-132 record, including a schoolrecord ﬁve 20-win seasons. He led Butler to ﬁve league regular season and tournament championships, three NCAA Tournament bids and two trips to the NIT. He was named league Coach of the Year four times. Collier was a two-year basketball letterwinner at Butler, 1974-76. He was a team captain, all-league performer and co-MVP in 1975-76, and he was inducted into Butler’s Athletic Hall of Fame in the summer of 2006. He earned a B.A. degree from Butler in 1976 and a Master’s Degree from Indiana State in 1977.

Butler Soccer Facilities

BUTLER BOWL Butler soccer now plays the majority of its matches on campus at the Butler Bowl. The Bowl, located next to Hinkle Fieldhouse (510 W. 49th Street), underwent a major face-lift in 2005, with the addition of a new field turf surface and the elimination of more than 17,000 seats. The new field is large enough to accommodate both football and soccer. The Butler Bowl has been home to Butler football for more than seven decades. The stadium was completed in 1928 with a seating capacity for 36,000 spectators. Seating was reduced to 20,000 in 1955, with the addition of the Hilton U. Brown Theatre in the south end zone. The outdoor theater, which was removed in the recent renovation, served as the summer home of widely-recognized Starlight Musicals for more than three decades. Butler’s new all-purpose field is flanked on the east side by a new, apartment-style student housing complex, completed in the fall of 2006.

VARSITY FIELD Butler’s soccer program found a permanent home on campus in 1995 at Varsity Field. A practice facility since the program’s inception, Varsity Field was first used in game competition on Sept. 22, 1991. The Bulldogs celebrated the opening of the new home field by beating Valparaiso 8-0. Since then, the Bulldogs have compiled a 33-7-3 record at Varsity Field.

Two major steps were taken to make Varsity Field a first-class facility in 1994. Thanks to a generous donation by Dr. John McCarroll, an orthopedic surgeon with Methodist Hospital and Butler’s team doctor, the playing field was enclosed. Also, Butler imported covered “World Cup” benches from Sweden, which provide protection from inclement weather. That same year, Varsity Field served as the host for the women’s Midwestern Collegiate Conference championship. Improvements to Varsity Field have continued in recent years. A new scoreboard has been in place for seven seasons, and a new press box was added in 2003. Future plans could include the installment of lights, which would enable all Butler home matches to be played at Varsity Field. The Bulldogs currently use Kuntz Stadium for evening contests. Varsity Field has seating for approximately 1,000 soccer spectators. It is located in the neighborhood of Rocky Ripple, across the White River Canal from Butler’s Holcomb Botanical Gardens, and next to the varsity softball field and Butler’s intramural fields.

KUNTZ STADIUM Since soccer became a varsity sport at Butler University, the Bulldogs’ home away from home has been William F. Kuntz Stadium, one of the top soccer facilities in the Midwest. The Bulldogs have used Kuntz Stadium to host night matches, as well as several matches against nationally-prominent foes.

Constructed in 1987 for the soccer competition of the Tenth Pan American Games, Kuntz Stadium rapidly gained a national reputation for its first-class facilities and quality playing surface. The stadium was designed as a soccer-only facility, with both players and fans in mind. Since its opening, Kuntz has played host to numerous amateur, high school and collegiate soccer matches and has served as the site for several international competitions. It also was the home of the Indiana Blast, Indianapolis’ professional men’s outdoor soccer team. Butler’s conference tournament championship has been played at Kuntz Stadium seven times. Located at 1502 W. 16th Street, Kuntz Stadium has seating to accommodate up to 5,000 soccer spectators. Stadium seating is located on both sides of the field, with the press box and locker rooms located on the west side of the championship field. A second field sits west of the championship field. The stadium is located less than five miles from the Butler campus.
