Emotional Intelligence (EQ) And Its Impact In People’s Decisions Have you ever wonder the impact that your emotions have in your decisions? Many people believe that the success of their decisions is the result of seeing the big picture of the situation and also taking in consideration the longterm benefits that could be acquired from making those decisions at that precise time. I agree! Those in the psychology and life/career coaching field believe that our mind is the ultimate decision success tool. I also agree! All the great ideas, personal power, and creativity start in our mind, making it the most powerful tool and possession that human beings can posses. Even when human minds have varied “functions,” the least understood are the functions associated with emotions and feelings. According to Encyclopedia Britannica (2010),

emotions influence what people perceive, learn, and remember, and it also plays an important part in people’s behaviors and during decision-making processes. People sometimes behave, act, and react based on their current emotional state. Making important or crucial decisions based on emotions are one of the biggest mistakes we can make not only in our career lives but also in our personal lives. How many of you have reacted to a situation or taken an “out of nowhere” decision and after couple of days has passes, you realized that it was not a smart decision and you start asking yourself… “What was I thinking? I am sure that it has happened to all us before. When making important decisions, we need to understand the impact emotions can have in those decisions and try to manage our emotions and feelings and not let them control our lives. That is exactly what emotional intelligence refers to; the ability to understand and be aware of our emotions and use them to our advantages. Understanding our feelings and emotions and not letting them “sabotage” our decision making processes will allow us to manage relationships more effectively and not only to make better and successful decisions but also to learn how to take control of our lives by becoming emotionally intelligent individuals. One last thought, let your emotions come out but do not let them influence your decisions or you could be making a big mistake without knowing it is a big mistake. Written by: Marielys Camacho-Reyes. She is a graduate Psychology student at the University of Phoenix, a Career Coaching student at the Coach Training Alliance, and a military Spouse.
Discovering Puerto Rico and its Attractions PARQUE MONAGAS The Julio Enrique Monagas National Park is located right next to base on Road #28, km 4, Luchetti Industrial Center, Bayamón. During the Second World War it was known as the Buchanan Powder House, on which the Army stored ammo and powder. It was officially inaugurated in 1993 during the CentroAmerican and Caribbean Games. It has natural trails, a pony ride, and picnic areas for rent at $25 each per day. There are also multiple use rooms for rent and play areas for the children. It was dedicated to one of the early forefathers of sports in Puerto Rico, memorable Ponce citizen Julio Enrique Monagas who established the first track and field club on
the Island (the Ponce Athletic Club) back in 1929. Born in the Dominican Republic, at an early age Julio settled in Ponce where he was raised by his Puerto Rican parents. In 1928 he became the first and finest sports editor to work for a local newspaper (El Día). In the late 1940’s he created the Puerto Rico Amateur Athletic Federation, directed the Administration of Public Parks and Recreation and most importantly, formed the Puerto Rico Olympic Committee. He was the first of three Puerto Rican citizens (besides Germán Rieckehoff Sampayo and Héctor Francisco Cardona) to preside over the Central-American Sports Organization (ODECABE). In 1984, at the 87th Ses-
sion of the International Olympic Committee he was rightfully awarded an Olympic Silver Medal as the driving force and father of the Olympic Movement in Puerto Rico and founder of its National Olympic Committee. The Julio Enrique Monagas National Park is open to the public seven days a week from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. Call (787) 269-6600, (787) 269-6603 for more information or to reserve one of its picnics stands for a private activity.

Team Members Highlight Photos: DFMWR Team having fun in team building activities. At left: DFMWR Director’s desk with a creation from the activities.
The Whole DFMWR Team! People like to be recognized and appreciated for their efforts. This may be especially true in the workplace. That ‘s why on Friday, January 21st 2011, DFMWR hosted an Employee Appreciation Event at the Community Club & Conference Center. The event’s main objective was to bring together the workforce, offer an opportunity for management to express it’s appreciation for all the staff’s accomplishments, and also, just have fun together! That was exactly what happened in this event that started with an audiovisual presentation prepared by the HIRED! CYSS youth students. DFMWR Director, Mr. Dallas Petersen thanked all for their dedication and highlighted many ac-
complishments during year 2010. Trivias and team building activities followed, from where the Director got to keep a symbolic reminder of DFMWR’s mission, to decorate his desk (see photo). To top off the afternoon, food, beverages and a musical surprise by Pleneros Bombaya provided a latin flair that everyone enjoyed. All this left a question in everyone’s minds: When’s the next?

A Long Time Coming By: Evan Thomas
Since 1984, Newsweek has been renowned for its vivid, in-depth special election coverage of the ordeal of running for the presidency. A year before the election, Newsweek assigns reports to cover the presidential campaigns on an embargoed basis; anything they learn is kept confidential until the polls close on Election Day. In return, the reports receive remarkable access to the candidates, their handlers, and their families. They travel with the candidates, witness crucial turning points and confidential meetings, and unearth stories not covered in day-to-day reporting. The result is a story that reads like no other coming off the campaign trail. In A Long Time Coming, written by Evan Thomas, Newsweek shares the inside stories from the epic 2008 election. This riveting narrative charts the rise of Barack Obama, the comeback of John McCain, the long siege between Obama and Hillary Clinton, the explosive arrival of Sarah Palin, and Obama’s final road to victory. It offers intimate portraits of Clinton, McCain, and Obama as they fight and survive, suffer through times of vexation and self-doubt, and quarrel with their families and advisers. It reveals the Clinton campaign’s messy infighting. It details McCain’s grudging decision to abandon his free-wheeling style in favor of a highly disciplined, press-averse campaigning strategy. And it shows how Obama transformed himself from the consummate outsider to the confident leader of the biggest, best-financed get-outthe-vote campaign in the history of American politics. With a new chapter on the shaping of the Obama administration, its key players, and its prospects, A Long Time Coming tells the rich and complex story behind the transformative election of 2008.
Each month, prior to the movie event, copies of the selected title will be available at the Library. See the movie and receive a free bag of popcorn even if you haven’t read the book. For more information about Read the Book, See the Movie, visit or call the Library at (787) 707-3208.

The Grapes of Wrath (PG) Thursday, March 17th at 5:30pm Adapted by Nunnally Johnson from John Steinbeck’s classic novel, the film tells a simple story about Oklahoma farmers leaving the depression-era dustbowl for the promised land of California, but it’s the story’s emotional resonance and theme of human perseverance that makes the movie so richly and timelessly rewarding. It’s all about the humble Joad family’s cross-country trek to escape the economic devastation of their ruined farmland, beginning when Tom Joad returns from a four-year prison term to discover that his family home is empty. He’s reunited with his family just as they’re setting out for the westbound journey, and thus begins an odyssey of saddening losses and strengthening hopes. As Ma Joad is the embodiment of one of America’s greatest social tragedies and the Okie spirit of pressing forward against all odds. The Grapes of Wrath is one of the finest films ever made.

Inexpensive Alternatives to Exercise By Roberto Fernández, Fitness Center Manager
It’s the beginning of the year and most people’s New Year’s resolution is to get in better shape. Attendance to Fitness Centers, classes of all sorts, outdoor tracks & parks increase dramatically this time of year. There is always a percentage of customers who feel uncomfortable when exercising indoors with so many people around them. Some express even feeling claustrophobic with only a small space without bumping into one another or don’t have the patience to share a machine. The high attendance is mostly seasonal. It mostly occurs in certain times of the year like in January, close to the summer and around August and September. If you are one that would like to avoid these heavy crowds during those times a year or would like to work out in the privacy of your own home with inexpensive equipment here are some alternatives to consider: Walking – A natural exercise by nature. The only cost is really if you do not have the appropriate foot wear. Other than that it is really picking a safe area to exercise. Take water with you. Hiking – Mostly same as above. Be prepared as it is harder than it looks. Dumbbells – Cost varies due to the weight.
These are versatile and do not occupy much space. Jump Rope – Another tool that is cheap and can give you a good work out. Fit Ball – Comes in different sizes and can also be very versatile. Rent or Buy Videos – Especially if it is not a new video. There are options of Aerobics, Zumba, Kick boxing, etc. Resistance Tubing – Comes in variable resistance. Versatile as you can work every muscle with one. Also, easy to carry and to travel with. Yard or House Work – Depending on the task some of it can be considered a good exercise, even dancing with a broom. A Step or Steps – You can use a step to go up and down or combinations and even as a bench. A flight of steps can also be used. Body Weight Exercises – These can be done with no equipment; Pushups, squats, jumping jacks, pull ups, etc. Like with any exercise program a physician should be consulted before starting. If guidance is needed you can contact the Fort Buchanan Fitness Center and a certified trainer can help you with a program.
