Take Action in the New Year It’s that time of year again when we start talking and thinking about New Year’s Resolutions even though they’re old hat and we instinctively know they don’t work. We know that within a few days or weeks, the Resolutions will be forgotten, nothing will have changed and yet for some reason most people still worry about them. So why do we still bother with New Year’s Resolutions? First, they’re a custom and a New Year ushers in a new start, so what better time than now? There’s even a small chance that we may stick to our Resolutions this year, so we have a go. The main reason some people think about New Year’s Resolutions is because they want to change things in their life. There’s the usual New Year’s Resolutions, such as I want to lose weight or earn more money but they tend to be the same ones you’ve had for years and they’re still incomplete. These types of Resolutions are too vague. For Resolutions to work, they need to be well thought out and have real meaning. If not, they become a vague item on your wish list instead of actually doing something concrete about them. The word resolution comes from resolve and means to make up one’s mind or decide firmly. Prior to New Years Day you may think of Resolutions you want to make and probably feel you’ve made up your mind, but what happens? Probably, very little or even nothing at all. Even though you know that Resolutions don’t usually work, it seems that most us still want to make them, perhaps you feel you should follow suit because there are things in your life which you want to be different. The end of a year is a time for clearing out and completing things, to leave
us with a clean slate ready to start a New Year. There’s something about a New Year, a new beginning, and a fresh start which encourages us to make New Year’s Resolutions. It’s a powerful feeling to know you have a year ahead of you and you can choose what you do with it. It’s a time for reflection about where you want to go next. What about committing to New Year changes and actions, rather than Resolutions? The key to achieving what you really want in life and business is to take action to achieve those changes.
• More time in your personal life
• Less stress and more fun
• Greater business and career success
• Balance between work and home
• Altering your management or leadership style
You may think about life and business separately, yet they’re inextricably linked. The key point is that you may want to focus on your professional life, yet this is directly related to your personal life. Thinking about New Year’s Resolutions may have made you aware that there are some changes you want to make. Take steps on a consistent basis to make these changes, rather than vaguely tossing Resolutions around and not doing anything about them. Source: Article base
Discovering Puerto Rico and its Attractions Lake Guajataca
Excerpts from Wikipedia.org
Lago Guajataca is a reservoir located between the municipalities of San Sebastián, Quebradillas, and Isabela at the West of Puerto Rico. This man-made lake was created in 1929. The lake receives flow from the Guajataca River and can be used for fishing. The reservoir provides water to the inhabitants of northwestern Puerto Rico. It is also the location of Camp Guajataca, the Island’s main camping grounds of the Boy Scouts of America. The lake area is 10 degrees cooler than the rest of the Island and provides year round recreational opportunities and outdoor activities including fishing for bass, tilapia and catfish, kayaking, nature watching and relaxing in general.
The name of the lake comes from the area where it is located. Guajataca comes from the Taíno Indian word Guajataka for the area (northwestern Puerto Rico) prior to the arrival of Cristobal Colón. The river, Río Guajataca, also carries the name. Lago Guajataca was built by the United States Army Corps of Engineers by building a dam across the river Río Guajataca and is owned by the Puerto Rico Electrical Authority. Many schools, businesses, and organizations, including a parador, Boy Scout Camp, and kayak excursion company are named for the area and water way as well.

Team Members Highlight
This Year’s Holiday Celebration Boricua Style was unique in it’s own way. A community parade opened the event followed by children swirling around in the skating rink, taking pictures with Santa, and adults enjoying typical Puerto Rican food and music. It was a celebration with the traditional native flair, and the backstage crew that made everything happen were DFMWR Team members. Each one deserves to be recognized for their outstanding dedication in order to provide fun leisure time events to the people of Fort Buchanan.

What are You Reading?
The Fort Buchanan Post Library celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday with a display of various reading materials available for check-out.
Featured Book for Dr. King’s Birthday:
A Call to Conscience
The Landmark Speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Edited by: Clayborne Carson and Kris Shepard
A Call to Conscience is a milestone collection of Dr. King’s most influential and best known speeches. Compiled by Stanford historian Dr. Clayborne, and by contributing editor Kris Shepard, this volume takes you behind the scenes on an astonishing historical journey from the small, crowded church in Montgomery, Alabama, where The Birth of a New Nation ignited the modern civil rights movement; to the center of the Nation’s capital, where I Have a Dream echoed through a nation’s conscience; to the Mason Temple in Memphis, where over ten thousand people heard Dr. King give his last, transcendent speech, I’ve Been to the Mountaintop, the night before his assassination. In twelve important introductions, some of the world’s most renowned leaders and theologians – Andrew Young, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Senator Edward M. Kennedy, and Mrs. Rosa Parks, among others – share with you their reflections on these speeches and give priceless firsthand testimony on the events that inspired their delivery. Expressing a deeply felt faith in democracy, the power of loving change, and a self-deprecating humor, A Call to Conscience is Dr. King speaking today. It is a unique, unforgettable record of the words that rallied millions, forever changed the face of America, and even today shape our deepest personal hopes and dreams for the future.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon (PG-13) Thursday, January 20th at 5:30pm The Twilight Saga’s second installment finds Bella and Edward feeling pretty good - or at least a little less broody about the state of things after having ironed out some of the finer points of interspecies dating. Naturally, it doesn’t last long. Bella’s 18th birthday party turns into a bit of a fiasco when Edward’s brother nearly kills Bella in a fit of bloodlust. It’s an awkward situation, to be certain, but while Bella is willing to forgive and forget, Edward elects to leave town - permanently. The decision sets off a chain of miscommunications that lead to, among other things, cliff diving, a visit with vampire royalty, a supernatural love triangle, and a close call with a scorned vampire whose mate met a gory end at the hands of the Cullens.

Dear John (PG-13) Thursday, February 17th at 5:30pm John is a Soldier on leave who meets Savannah, a college student. The two may not have been looking for love, but love finds them anyway. Then the September 11th attacks happen, and John is torn between love for Savannah and duty to Country. Because this is an adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks novel, there will be drama and heartbreak, and Dear John doesn’t tread lightly in this emotional battlefield.

Brain Health and Fitness New Year’s Resolutions: Train your Brain You have survived the 2010 shopping and eating season. Congratulations! Now it’s time to shift gears and focus on 2011...whether you write down some New Year resolutions or contemplate some things that you want to let go of from last year and set intentions and goals for this year - as is a friend’s tradition on the winter solstice. To summarize the key findings of the last 20 years of neuroscience research on how to “exercise our brains”, there are three things that we can strive for: novelty, variety and challenge. If we do these three things, we will build new connections in our brains, be mindful and pay attention to our environment, improve cognitive abilities such as pattern-recognition, and in general contribute to our lifelong brain health. Here are a few potential New Year’s resolutions, perhaps some unexpected, that will help you make 2011 a year of Brain Health and Fitness: • Reading habits: If you usually read nonfiction, try something new this season. Pick up a good fiction book, or vice versa. For bonus points, subscribe to or simply read a new magazine, perhaps one that your partner craves? It will help you understand another perspective.
• Learn about the Brain: Pick up one of the books in the Science section in your library. In the unlikely scenario that you read as many brain-related book, pick up some Russian poetry book and let’s discuss this instead. • At work: Find, or create, an intellectually and socially stimulating new job for yourself at your current workplace or a new one. Engaging work has been shown to contribute to lifelong cognitive performance. At the very least, go out of your way to make whatever job you have more stimulating: try talking to a new colleague or client everyday and learn a new thing about them. You will not remember everything, but surely more than if you don’t even try. • Gratitude vs. the Subprime mess: With increasing coverage of economic woes, the subprime mess, and recession, it is easy to lose perspective and become depressed. To put things in perspective, it pays off to devote some time to keep a Gratitude Journal and simply scribble a few notes a day. For bonus points: do this while you are watching TV news and share your notes with your partner. • Participate in creating a better environment: Our planet, our families, our communities, our schools, all can benefit from our help. What

project do you care enough to commit some of your time to in 2011? If you have school age kids, have you considered joining the school board?. • Computer-based programs: With the growing number of brain training products, you may be thinking of giving one a try, either for you or for a loved one. As mentioned in point number 2 above, it makes sense to do some research before making a purchase. Where to start? OK, now you have read these suggestions, resolve to keep at least one of them...which one will you choose?

Three Kings Day
By: Guilliana E. Hernández, twelve year old CYSS, MSP Program youth
Three Kings Day is a tradition that Puerto Ricans have done for a long time, even longer than Santa Claus’s day. Here I write something to show what the day of the Three Kings is, and why it’s a huge tradition in Puerto Rico. Three Kings Day is celebrated on January 6th, it is known as the day of the Three Kings. According to an old legend based on a Bible story, these three Kings saw, on the night when Christ was born, a bright star, followed it to Bethlehem and found there the Christ child and presented it with gold, frankincense and myrrh.
In order to qualify to become an FCC you must meet the following: • Be at least 18 years of age. • Hold a High School Diploma or GED. • Must reside in government quarters. • Will have no conviction of admission to, or evidence of family violence, child neglect, alcohol abuse or use of illegal drugs by any person working within a FCC. • Must be able to speak, read and write the English language to the extent that they are able to execute health and safety directives and implement developmental activities for children effectively as determined by the CYSS Coordinator. • May not hold another job either full or parttime during the hours the FCC home is in operation.
On the evening before Three Kings, traditionally there were prayers, blessed dried herbs would be burnt and their aromatic smell would fill the house. Doorways would be sprinkled with Holy water and the master of the house would write with chalk C + M + B and the year above the house and barn door and say: “CMB, protect us again this year from the dangers of fire and water.” C + M + B has traditionally been translated with Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar, however, according to the Church it stands for “Christus Mansionem Benedictat” (Christ bless this home).
Interested In Yoga For Kids?
Certainly! A practice that’s thousands of years old, yoga has been recognized as an essential practice for physical and mental health. The benefits of yoga are countless. Why not let your children experience these benefits too? Our kids can adopt this practice immediately which leads to increased flexibility, coordination, increased strength, enhanced concentration and stress relief, which would provide a lifetime of benefits for your children! Contrary to generally held opinion kids are NOT just pint-sized adults. They require a different strategy... a different environment. The benefits of yoga for kids exceed even those that adults realize. It can help with weight loss, flexibility, concentration and strength, but yoga also helps with more kid specific problems. For example, yoga has been show to be helpful with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorders in children. Yoga provides the motor and sensory stimulation that kids desire. Practicing yoga at an early age helps kids to develop confidence and improved body awareness. Since yoga is noncompetitive, it develops a sense of cooperation and compassion, rather than competition. This creates a more giving and caring kid. This year SKIESUnlimited will be offering new classes to their curriculum Yoga for Kids and Modern Dance will be some of the new courses that will be offered. SKIESUnlimited encompasses instructional programs for children and youth from infancy to adolescence. For information about SKIESUnlimited, available classes, and how to register, please contact CYSS Parent registration Office 787-707-3432
In Puerto Rico tradition states that on the Eve of the Epiphany children collect hay, straw or grass and place it in boxes or containers under their beds. This gesture is a gift of food for the Kings’ horses while they rest in between deliveries. If a child has been good for the past year he will receive candies, sweets or toys. If the child was misbehaved or naughty he would instead find a lump of dirt or charcoal in his box. For us this tradition is not only to remind us of the Three Kings, but also to be together, as a family, the way Jesus and The Three Kings would have wanted. I hope you have a wonderful holiday, and not just think about the gift and presents, but also think about the real reason of this special holiday.
