Discovering Puerto Rico and its Attractions
Hacienda Buena Vista
Hacienda Buena Vista, considered one of Puerto Rico’s best remaining examples of a coffee plantation, consists of an 87 acre agricultural complex constructed in the mid-19th century. The hacienda’s principle buildings, grouped together within a three acre area, include the hacienda manor house, a carriage house, horse and mule stables, a caretaker’s house and office, two warehouses, a hurricane shelter, a corn mill and slave quarters. A canal, beginning at the top of Vives Waterfall, goes through an aqueduct and on to the coffee mill, which is a two-story wooden building located to the northwest of the Hacienda Manor House. At its best times Hacienda Buena Vista produced and processed more than 10,000 pounds of coffee per year for shipment to Europe. The Conservation Trust of Puerto Rico purchased the land and buildings from the Vives family in 1984. Hacienda Buena Vista Photo courtesy of the Puerto Rico Office of Historic Preservation
Hacienda Buena Vista is located in Barrio Magüeyes, on State Rd. 10 north of Ponce, Puerto Rico. The Conservation Trust of Puerto Rico completed restoration of the hacienda complex for use as a living museum. Reservations are required for two-hour tours offered Saturday and Sunday at 8:30 am, 10:30 am, 1:30 pm and 3:30 pm. Group tours can be arranged for Wednesdays and Thursdays. There is a fee for admission. Call 787-722-5882 or 787-722-5834 or 787284-7020 on the weekends. Source: National Park Service, www.nps.gov /nr/travel

Operation Rising Star
is the annual singing contest for U.S. military personnel and Family members. The production begins with local competitions on installations and at garrisons around the world. A panel of judges selects 12 semifinalists who travel to Fort Belvoir, Va., for a weeklong competition televised by the Pentagon Channel and webcast worldwide on the Internet. Viewers get to vote online for their favorite performers, who are narrowed to three finalists by the third of four shows during finals week. Following that show, the winner is announced at a reveal show. Operation Rising Star champions earn a trip to California, usually during Grammy Week, to record a three-song demo album at Firehouse Recording Studios in Pasadena. The contest is open to all Military and their Family members, 18-and-older. For more information visit www.oprisingstar.com.

On a summer day in 1848, a gathering of women in Seneca Falls, New York, gave birth to a new revolution in American history – the fight for women’s rights. In the 1800s and earlier, most people believed that a woman’s place was in the home. Despite the overriding opinion, some women saw that their lives were limited by this view. These women decided to bravely fight the norm. Created Equal is the story of this struggle – women’s struggle for the right to vote.

Golf
Fitness and Conditioning
Golf is an athletic sport and thus requires a certain amount of conditioning and fitness in order to improve or continue playing at a certain level. Strength, flexibility and endurance are areas of fitness that all golfers should be aware of. Balance and core stability are also important aspects to consider. Golf fitness is for all golfers regardless of age. Many golfers who have begun a golf fitness program have found improvements in general health. Just as in other sports, a golf fitness program should focus on areas that improve your game. Below are some basic fundamentals to work on. Remember, before starting any exercise program, consult your physician. Also, most local gyms have professionals available to assist you in your goals. Improvements may be slow and often unnoticed but do not give up. Working with weights is always beneficial but keep the weights manageable. Always warm up before using weights. Too much weight can cause injuries and possible build muscles that can restrict a good golf swing. Use lighter weights and more repartitions. Dumbbell curls, squats, reverse barbell wrist curls and barbell lunges are some of the exercises with weights that should improve performance. Work on the smaller muscles such as the hands and wrists areas for strength training. Focus on the larger muscles to improve endurance. Stretching is necessary in the golf swing. The more flexible we are, the easier it is to hit the ball further. The shoulder stretch is an excel-
ENTERTAINMENT lent exercise for golfers. Place one arm straight across chest. Then place the other hand on the stretched elbow and pull arm towards chest and hold. Repeat with other arm. Remember, do not tug or jerk the arm. Keep the pulling pressure constant so you do not incur and injury. The back stretch is another good exercise. Simply start kneeling on the ground with your arms out in front of you. Then slide your arms further away and slowly shift your hips back towards your feet until a comfortable stretch is felt. Now slide your hands to the right until a stretch is felt down the side of your torso. Repeat to the left. These are just a few easy techniques to help you achieve your golfing goals. Again, your local fitness professional can better assist you with your physical training. By Jim Doulin, Golf Course Complex Manager
What is iPlay iWin Bingo Program?
It’s fun, exciting and something new! It’s Electronic bingo at it’s best. It’s played by customers at their leisure in the Community Club. It is played on a touch-screen handheld device with a variety of games. The devices are located at the cashier counter and are checked out to customers pre-loaded with the number of bingo cards they request. Customers play as long as they like and then return the unit to the counter to collect their bingo winnings. Ask one of the Community Club employees and try your luck.
