The CYSS CDC-SAS Celebrated the Army 236th Army Birthday

New School Year after a successful Summer Camp After another successful Summer Camp, we at Fort Buchanan Child, Youth and School Services would like to welcome you and your children and youth back to our programs. As the new school year approaches we too are gearing up for autumn. Like many of you, we look to August as the natural time to re-register. In an effort to alleviate what can often be a long wait to meet with a representative, we ask that you call our Parent Central Services office prior to coming in so that we can let you know what forms and documents you may need to complete your registration for the coming year. We hope to limit the time spent waiting and completing the process by making sure that you are as prepared as possible for your appointment. Our Parent Central Services office is located at the Welcome Center, Bldg. 152, however it will be moving mid-July to Bldg. 1145 in Coconut Grove (near the Middle School Program). You may always reach the office at (787) 707-3787/3434. We thank you and hope to hear from you soon.

On June 17th 2011 about 170 children and staff participated in this activity. US Garrison Command Sergeant Major, Derrick T. Simpson, S3 Chief Officer CPT Patrick Vรกzquez, LTC US Garrison Chaplain Ray Alexander, CPT Chaplain Eric Miletti, Deputy Commander Health Clinic Mr. Eduardo Colรณn, US Garrison CSM Assistant SGT Nestor Correa and CYSS parent Ms. Denise Resto de Molina were invited to read to the children about the 236th Army Birthday. The activity was followed by a cutting cake ceremony. Inflatables were available for the children to have fun after the ceremony was over. Thanks to everyone that made this activity possible and for their continued support.

Most people do not think of golf as an active sport. For years it has been categorized as a leisure sport and not necessarily associated with good health. However, latest studies indicate that golf can be very beneficial to good health. Research conducted by Neil Wolkodoff of the Rose Center for Health and Sports Sciences (Denver, Colo.) was used to show roughly how many calories were burned playing an average 9-hole golf course. According to the article golfers who walk and carry their own bag burn 721 calories, golfers using a pull cart burn 718 calories, golfers walking with a caddie burn 613 calories and golfers riding in a golf cart burn 411 calories on average. Research has indicated that burning 2,500 calories per week can greatly reduce the risk of several medical conditions. Golf is a game where you can enjoy the company of friends, enjoy the outdoors and the exercise is a bonus. Walking a normal golf course is equivalent to walking approximately 4 miles. Not only are you walking but you are also swinging the golf club creating stretching exercise and improving motor skills. For those golfers that normally ride a golf cart, simply leaving the cart on the path and walking to your ball occasionally will also improve the health benefits. Even an hour on the Driving Range will help burn calories and improve your health. The next time you think you need to get some exercise, think about playing golf with some friends. Playing golf may not be equal to working out at the gym or playing basketball but it is exercise in a friendly surrounding, enjoying friends and nature. Remember, if you are planning to start any type of exercise program, consult your doctor first. By Jum Douling, Golf Course Complex Manager
