Page 9 Independence Day

Thomas Jefferson wrote the first draft of the Declaration of Independence and presented it to the Continental Congress on June 28, 1776, in Philadelphia, Penn. Four days later (after some editing), only nine out of the 13 colonies voted in favor of it. On July 8, the Declaration was publicly read aloud twice in Philadelphia’s Independence Square to cheering crowds and pealing church bells. The Province Bell in Independence Hall was rung as well and was renamed the Liberty Bell. The signing of the document was not completed until August. The first July 4th celebration took place the following year. By the early 1800s, the holiday traditions of parades, picnics, and fireworks were established.

San Juan Night at the WaterSpout The traditional San Juan Night was celebrated on June 23rd from 7:00 pm – 1:00 am at the Water Spout. Even though it rained, attendees could not miss out the opportunity to leave bad luck behind and jump in the pool for good luck! Live steel band played tropical music for all to enjoy while they had delicious BBQ food from our Community Club & Conference Center. We want to express our sincere appreciation to our event sponsor, Coors Light, for its participation and contribution to MWR’s activities enjoyed by our Armed Forces and guests.

Coping with Grief and Loss • Your are not Alone By: Melinda Smith, M.A., Ellen Jaffe–Gill, M.A., and Jeanne Segal, Ph.D. Helpguide.org

Losing someone or something you love is very painful. After a significant loss, you may experience all kinds of difficult and surprising emotions, such as shock, anger, and guilt. Sometimes it may feel like the sadness will never let go. While these feelings can be frightening and overwhelming, they are normal reactions to loss. Accepting them as part of the grieving process and allowing yourself to feel what you feel is necessary for healing. There is no right or wrong way to grieve — but there are healthy ways to cope with the pain. You can get through it! Grief that is expressed and experienced has a potential for healing that eventually can strengthen and enrich life.

What is grief?

Grief is a natural response to loss. It’s the emotional suffering you feel when something or someone you love is taken away. You may associate grief with the death of a loved one – and this type of loss does often cause the most intense grief. But any loss can cause grief, including: • A relationship breakup • Loss of health • Losing a job • Loss of financial stability • A miscarriage • Death of a pet • Loss of a cherished dream • A loved one’s serious illness • Loss of a friendship • Loss of safety after a trauma The more significant the loss, the more intense the grief. However, even subtle losses can lead to grief. For example, you might experience grief after moving away from home, graduating from college, changing jobs, selling your family home, or retiring from a career you loved.

Everyone grieves differently

Grieving is a personal and highly individual experience. How you grieve depends on many factors, including your personality and coping style, your life experience, your faith, and the nature of the loss. The grieving process takes time. Healing happens gradually; it can’t be forced or hurried – and there is no “normal” timetable for grieving. Some people start to feel better in weeks or months. For others, the grieving process is measured in years. Whatever your grief experience, it’s important to be patient with yourself and allow the process to naturally unfold.

Myths and Facts About Grief MYTH: The pain will go away faster if you ignore it. Fact: Trying to ignore your pain or keep it from surfacing will only make it worse in the long run. For real healing it is necessary to face your grief and actively deal with it. MYTH: It’s important to “be strong” in the face of loss. Fact: Feeling sad, frightened, or lonely is a normal reaction to loss. Crying doesn’t mean you are weak. You don’t need to “protect” your family or friends by putting on a brave front. Showing your true feelings can help them and you. MYTH: If you don’t cry, it means you aren’t sorry about the loss. Fact: Crying is a normal response to sadness, but it’s not the only one. Those who don’t cry may feel the pain just as deeply as others. They may simply have other ways of showing it. MYTH: Grief should last about a year. Fact: There is no right or wrong time frame for grieving. How long it takes can differ from person to person. (Source: Center for Grief and Healing) Coping with grief and loss tip 1: Get support The single most important factor in healing from loss is having the support of other people. Even if you aren’t comfortable talking about your feelings under normal circumstances, it’s important to express them when you’re grieving. Sharing your loss makes the burden of grief easier to carry. Wherever the support comes from, accept it and do not grieve alone. Connecting to others will help you heal. Coping with grief and loss tip 2: Take care of yourself When you’re grieving, it’s more important than ever to take care of yourself. The stress of a major loss can quickly deplete your energy and emotional reserves. Looking after your physical and emotional needs will help you get through this difficult time.

When grief doesn’t go away

It’s normal to feel sad, numb, or angry following a loss. But as time passes, these emotions should become less intense as you accept the loss and start to move forward. If you aren’t feeling better over time, or your grief is getting worse, it may be a sign that your grief has developed into a more serious problem, such as complicated grief or major depression. If you are a family member of a Fallen Soldier and would like more information call us today (787) 707-3692. You are not alone!

Join Outdoor Recreation’s Scuba Trips held monthly. Call 787-707- 3734 for details.

Beautiful beaches, forest, and bird-watching areas are located in Culebra, Puerto Rico. The Island measures 7 miles long by 3 miles wide and its main settlement is Dewey, with a small shopping district and a row of guest houses with restaurants along a channel from the ocean. Many of the restaurants and bars are spread out, some around Flamenco Bay and along the coastal roads running outside town. Culebra has a nature reserve with stunning coastal areas. For a tiny island, Culebra has tremendous number of spectacular beaches. Once you see Flamenco Beach, you might not want to go anywhere else. Zoni Beach faces east and on clear days you can see out to St. Thomas. Culebrita is the largest of the many small cays surrounding the island and has beaches and is ringed with coral. It is especially popular with boaters traveling around

the Caribbean. Malone is another great snorkeling beach and can be reached by foot from town. In addition to beaches, Culebra offers fantastic opportunities for diving and snorkeling. Culebra is surrounded by 50 dive sites and excellent snorkeling can be found right off its beaches. One of the best sites is Playa Carlos Rosario and Cayo Luis Peña Nature Reserve, which feature a long coral reef rich with sea life. The waters surrounding the islands are also a sailor’s delight, and vessels from across the world tie up in the sleepy sheltered coves of both islands. How to get there? The Puerto Rico Port Authority offers a daily ferry service between Fajardo and Dewey in Culebra. The Ferry can get crowded especially on weekends and holidays. Reservations are not accepted, but tickets can be purchased in advance. There is also a cargo/ car ferry from Fajardo to Culebra. Finally the fastest way to get to Culebra is by Air. There are several small airlines that fly to Culebra from the main island and are quite inexpensive.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon (PG-13)

Thursday, July 15 at 5:30 pm The Twilight Saga’s second installment finds Bella and Edward feeling pretty good - or at least a little less broody - about the state of things after having ironed out some of the finer points of interspecies dating. Naturally, it doesn’t last long. Bella’s 18th birthday party turns into a bit of a fiasco when Edward’s brother nearly kills Bella in a fit of bloodlust. It’s an awkward situation, to be certain, but while Bella is willing to forgive and forget, Edward elects to leave town permanently. The decision sets off a chain of miscommunications that lead to, among other things, cliff diving, a visit with vampire royalty, a supernatural love triangle, and a close call with a scorned vampire whose mate met a gory end at the hands of the Cullens.

Dear John (PG-13)

Thursday, August 19th at 5:30 pm John is a soldier home on leave who meets Savannah, a college student. The two may not have been looking for love, but love finds them anyway. Then the September 11 attacks happen, and John is torn between love for Savannah and duty to country. Because this is an adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks novel, there will be drama and heartbreak, and Dear John doesn’t tread lightly in this emotional battlefield.

Indoor Cycling… a Great Way to Exercise

Indoor Cycling was created by Johnny G in 1986. In preparing for a Race Across America, he needed to find a way to continue his Cycling program under all types of weather conditions. That is when he set up a stationary bike with a weighted flywheel. This invention has caused a great impact as it is practiced all over the world. There are a several Indoor Cycling programs out there, but in general they have very similar philosophies, Spinning being the household name. In Fort Buchanan Indoor Cycling was introduced in the year 1999. At that time, not knowing the impact it would have, only 16 bikes were purchased. In the next couple of months ten more bikes were purchased due to the high demand in classes. In the beginning there were only four classes and as the popularity grew there was a need for more instructors. Some positions were opened to fill that void and also the recruitment of volunteers started to supply the demand. After eleven years, four generations of bikes, certified employees and dozens of dedicated certified volunteers, the program at Fort Buchanan has 30 bikes and has grown to 16 classes a week, without including special requests from units or other groups. Classes range from 45 minutes to an hour and on special occasions can be of 90 minutes or more. This has been a trend that has continued over the years and seems to be attracting more customers to join in and achieve their fitness goals. An Indoor Cycling class can benefit anyone if the right steps are taken and the person is seriously about a training program. Benefits from a Cycling program are as follows: 1. Improved aerobic capacity 2. Can burn between 400-600 calories (45 min ride) 3. More energy 4. Tone lower body & core muscles 5. Releases stress & tension 6. Rider is in control 7. No complicated movements 8. Fun factor involved as it is done with a group At Fort Buchanan the wellness of our community is a concern and the Fitness center has established some rules for the enjoyment and safety of all; If you are fifty and over or have health risk factors a medical certificate is required. Signing in is a must and can be done a day in advance. Water and towel are a mandatory for the class. Towels will be placed in the back of the bike. You must arrive at least five minutes before the class, if you’re a beginner even earlier. No one will be permitted five minutes after starting time. Shoe laces should be tucked inside the shoes. No cell phones or electronics devices are permitted in class to avoid distractions and competing with instructor’s voice. Other rules may apply. If you are interested in joining the Fort Buchanan Indoor Cycling program or need more information call 787 707-3767 or visit our facilities located at building 167 Chrisman Road. Learning thru Play… Water Play

For young children, water isn’t just for getting clean. In fact, water play for toddlers is rarely about getting clean. For them, dumping, pouring, filling, mixing, playing with sponges, corks, cups, bowls, ice cubes, food coloring, bubbles and so on is a lot of fun. Water play encourages discovery and stimulates interest in the physical world.Toddlers have at least one water-play activity daily: bath time. A few suggestions to help your child have fun out of every bath: • Supervised carefully your child at all times/turn off your phone • Put a few inches of water in the tub, place your child in the water, then let the tap run slowly so your child can fill up cups, play in the stream of water, and so on • Add as many plastic kitchen utensils as you can spare to your collection of bath toys • Sponges (plain or cut into shapes) are fun for the bath • Young children love filling up small containers with water • Ping pong balls are great to play with in the water (try to keep it under the water... it will pop up) • Poke few holes in the bottom of a plastic container. Children will enjoy filling it with water and watching the water drip and dribble out the bottom • Include bubbles in your bath time Safety note: Drowning in a water-filled bucket or a few inches of water in the bathtub is a very real possibility for young children; please supervise any water play carefully.

Summer is a time for adventures, for trying out new things and for renovation. That is precisely what is going on at buildings 1142 and 1143. Feeling encouraged by the great success and compliments received when the Teen Center was remodeled in February of this year, the MSP program staff has decided to undertake a much needed renovation of the building which houses the Middle School Program. Renovation plans include a new color scheme, new furniture, flat screen TVs and many other things that will remain a surprise until reopening day. The MST world will keep improving. We have received notice that the construction for our new MST building will soon start. Hopefully within a year we will be inaugurating a brand new building with all the state of the art equipment that our youth and teens look forward to using. We will keep you posted of upcoming plans. If you would like to come and help us in the project for Fort Buchanan’s youth please stop by Building 1142 or call 787-707-3628.

CDC/SAS New Building’s Grand Opening Ceremony Will be held on July 9th at 10:00 am, Bldg. 1000, Coconut Grove. Everyone is invited!

Why Take Golf Lessons or By: Jim Doulin any other lessons?

As with any sport or activity, we can all learn to play without professional instructions. The difference is how well do you want to play? How well implies, do you want to improve, play without injury, learn the proper techniques and probably make the game easier to play. Many golfers’ take great pride in being self taught. I have heard numerous times in my career that “I have never taken a lesson”. When asked about how they learned the reply is routinely; I have read a lot of books, subscribe to golf magazines and get tips from friends. Knowing several of the Tour Players and following golf for many years, I have yet to hear any of the top players say they have never taken a lesson and that they were self-taught. Tiger Woods again made the news when his Swing Coach decided not to coach him. The number one ranked player in 2009 needs a swing coach? So does the number 2 and number 3 and number 500th ranked player. No matter how good your game is, taking golf lessons should help you see an improvement in your game. Most professionals take great pride in helping people improve their golf game and subsequently enjoy playing much more. Qualified instructors understand physical capabilities and restrictions, help set realistic goals and help you achieve those goals. When taking a golf lesson it is best to remain openminded. I have had many golfer’s take a lesson only to start with “I hit everything great except my driver”. Normally the driver only magnifies the errors in the swing due to the length of the club and the normally longer shot. The student plays an important part in the golf lesson. Students should be willing to listen and be able to visualize the proper movements. Be patient as it takes time and practice to improve. It can be frustrating to not see immediate results, but give it time and practice routinely to realize improvements. The following are my top ten reasons for taking golf lessons: 1. Learn basics of golf correctly. 2. Learn about golf equipment. 3. Become familiar with golf terminology. 4. Learn how each type of golf club is to be utilized. 5. Learn to hold different types of golf clubs. 6. Learn how to improve your golf swings, pitching, chipping, driving, takeaway, downswing, and others. 7. Learn about fitness, stance, posture, and other biomechanics. Individual, Couples 8. Become familiar with golf and Group Lessons drills and other practice Now available at Fort methods. Buchanan Golf Club. 9. Learn to be more consistent. Class fees range from 10. And finally, once you reach $25.00 - $60.00 For details and to register the level you want… be able call 787-707-3852. to maintain that level.
