bread, so that sandwiches were easy to create. Until that time, consumers would buy solid loaves or bake their own bread at home. Bread portions were often just torn off the loaf in random shapes. Now, with perfectly sliced pieces of bread, the sandwich had come into its glory. From long ago to present day, sandwiches are fun. To enjoy a predecessor of those first sandwiches, you can visit the Community Club & Conference Center from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm Mondays through Fridays. You get your choice of cold cut sandwich with a soup or salad for only $5.00. More information at 787-707-3535. Another option for a tasty sandwich is the Fort Buchanan Golf Course Snack Bar where you get your choice: Loaded Cuban Sandwich, Spicy Reuben, Tuna Melt or Meat Ball (only Wednesdays) for only $6.00, including chips and soda Mondays through Fridays from 10:00 am - 1:00 pm. Dedicate the month of August to sandwiches; from peanut butter and jelly to a thick juicy club. The word sandwich actually refers to John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich in 1762. He was a freespirit kind of guy who loved games and gambling. Since he was always in a hurry going from game to game, he never stopped for a full meal. He requested a piece of meat between two slices of bread to eat on the run. Others saw how practical this new way of eating was, and thus the sandwich was born. The sandwich hit the United States in 1827, when Elizabeth Leslie published her cookbook that included a ham sandwich. It was immediately popular with the population of the states, giving an easy, portable meal for workers and school children alike. By the 1900s, bakeries started selling pre-sliced

Ongoing MSP renovation During the last month, there have been many people in and out of buildings 1142 and 1143, carrying bags, paint, cleaning and eliminating old equipment among some other things. These are the CYSS staff members who have taken to task the renovation of these facilities. The process has been through and time consuming. A plan was developed and executed. CYSS personnel has re-tiled Bldg. 1142, painted both buildings in happy, new colors, and a major cleanup is being done. Most importantly new arts and crafts projects and sports equipment has been bought so that our youth can enjoy new and different activities. The computer lab has acquired a new “green” wall which will allow youth the ability to explore the magic of video filming with special effects.

You might wonder who has been working so hard so that our youth can have an almost brand new club? Well, all of the MS/T staff (Keyla, Danny, Evelyn, Carmin, Hector, Sebastian, Camille and Melba) has been taking turns painting, cleaning and re-arranging. We’ve also had help from Mr. Hector Rosado, Isaac and Ana Suero, who has a very artistic concept of painting. In addition, on the July 22nd, all of CYSS joined forces and staff from Youth Sports (Isaac , Ana and Arlene), Kitty Hamberg and even Ms. Carmen Dieppa showed up to help with the painting and other cleaning activities. It was a productive day and we thank everyone involved. A special thank you for Mr. Luis Andino who has been instrumental in making sure the program is completed in time to receive our youth when school starts on August 12th. He has worked long

hours tiling, painting, moving heavy objects and anything required. We truly would have been in trouble without his help. The renovated MSP will open on August 12th, 2010. Please join us to have a look-see and to enjoy the upgraded facilities anytime after that. If you have a youth, are a youth or know of any youth that might want to meet or make friends and have a great time while at it, please stop by the program and check out for yourself what we have to offer. A special thanks to Master Paints who has sponsored all paints and wall sealers for the new MSP facilities. Eco Pure is the new environmentally responsible, odor-less, low VOC, mold and mildew resistant paint line from Master developed for a safer and healthier environment for all. The US Army does not officially endorse sponsors.

Five fast selling products to sell at a Flea Market

By: Melanie Marten

Vendors are always searching for hot products to sell at a Flea Market. Many start by hauling their own junk to the market for some extra money. Once the flea market bug bites, sellers have to find other products to sell at a flea market that will make good money. While the selection of products to sell at the flea market is virtually endless, there are some hot choices that stand the test of time.

• Sunglasses

Flea markets take place outdoors, and the most people shop on sunny days. Not only are sunglasses popular products to sell at a flea market, they are great impulse buys for people who forgot their shades at home. If you want to profit with sunglasses, you should offer both expensive designer styles and inexpensive generic ones.

• Dollar Toys

Many parents give their kids a dollar or two to spend on whatever they want at the flea market. Dollar toys, or those under five dollars at the very most, are good products to sell at a flea market. Kids are the ultimate impulse shoppers.

• Pet Products

• Used Clothing

People spend a lot of money on their pets each year. This includes everything from food and medicines to toys, beds, clothing, and leashes and collars. Selling pet products at the flea market makes good business sense. Not only are they popular products to sell at a flea market, competition is usually low.

When searching for products to sell at the Flea Market, you should consider used goods. While some people shy away from buying used clothing, the average Flea Market shopper is looking for a bargain. If you have good quality, clean and undamaged used clothing to sell, you can earn a lot at the flea market. Products to sell at the flea market should be readily available and cheap to attain. Used clothing fills both requirements.

• Purses and Hand Bags

Handbags in different fabrics and colors are hot sellers at many Flea Markets. Whether is a new or vintage purse it’s always a great feeling when you find one, specially at a low price. Buying vintage purses is a hobby for many and finding a really retro and cool purse is like finding a treasure chest full of gold. These products to sell at the Flea Market are eye-catching, useful, and inexpensive enough to entice many shoppers. Call today and get a table on our August Flea Market. Reserve your table by calling 787-707- 5062.

Dear John (PG-13)

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (PG-13)

Thursday, August 19th at 5:30 pm

Thursday, September 19th at 5:30 pm

John is a soldier home on leave who meets Savannah, a college student. The two may not have been looking for love, but love finds them anyway. Then the September 11 attacks happen, and John is torn between love for Savannah and duty to country. Because this is an adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks novel, there will be drama and heartbreak, and Dear John doesn’t tread lightly in this emotional battlefield.

The sixth installment of the Harry Potter series begins right where The Order of the Phoenix left off. The wizarding world is rocked by the news that He Who Must Not Be Named has truly returned, and the audience finally knows that Harry is “the Chosen One”--the only wizard who can defeat Lord Voldemort in the end. Dark forces loom around every corner, and now regularly attempt to penetrate the protected walls of Hogwarts School. This is no longer the fun and fascinating world of magic from the first few books—it’s dark, dangerous, and scary.

Relaxation as a way to rejuvenate By: Samantha Miller

Just for the reason that you have already retired from word, you as well now need to take a break from life. When you do this, you need not say goodbye to happiness and good health forever. In order for you to have more fun on what you currently have you have to lead a more vigorous life. To achieve this, ensure that you make exercise as a regular habit so that you can keep your body healthy and vigorous. In the natural secretion of human growth hormone or hGH actually exercise acts as a major stimulus. This helps manage the endogenous causes of disease and aging. Of course, grown-ups have the right to benefit from a more dynamic life. All they must do is to be more vigilant of the lifestyle they lead. There are in fact a number of anti-aging exercises that promote relaxation as well in which are perfect for the older generation. Nowadays,Yoga and Pilates seem to be all the rage. If wish not to lose your strength, you have to make sure that your muscles are kept moving the same as anybody else. These forms of exercises are advisable for you for the reason that it does not place to much stress on your body. Nevertheless, the movements that you will be using will make you stay stronger and healthier, especially against illnesses that may come as your body comes to age, and thus, more vulnerable to sickness. To have a good feeling you have to be in motion. To begin with, you have to know all of the necessary movements. Both types of exercises tell you to start by deep breathing and counting as you take in air to your lungs. This helps by bringing fresh air in to your brain. Take a number of deep breaths and build up different muscles of your body. To focus on the different parts of your body should be main goal. Make sure that in the entire regime you work all of your muscles.Yoga concentrates on breathing while Pilates strengthens your back and stomach muscles. Its benefits are for everybody, young or old in similar way. These give a total scheme of physical strength. You will definitely distinguish a great development on your strength and energy levels in a little while. Begin with one step at a time, step forward only when you are at ease with the procedure. Unless you’ve been doing it for years, you must remember to take it slow or else you will strain your muscles and injure yourself. Back and joint pains, weak bones, cramps, osteoporosis, and decreased mobility are just some of the adverse side effects of someone who lives their life as if they had another one to spare. When you overwhelm yourself in inactivity, you found out your health will be in decreasing level. The secret here is doing things slowly and gradually. You will find out in no time that you have tougher muscles and better circulation. Years of doing your new routine is not a requirement in order to form its anti-aging benefits. To be successful with it you a strong determination is needed.

Golden Age Program On August 17th 2010 the Golden Age Program (GAP) started their second session of the year. This program is tailored for customers ages 50 and over, but the reality is anyone who has the time on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 am to 10:00 am can participate. The only requirement to join the program is a medical certificate, a filled GAP form and a screening process done by one of our staff members. The program includes activities such as walking, water aerobics, body toning, indoor cycling, tennis, circuit training, seminars, a healthy food day, among other special events. This program is also a great way to meet new people who share common interests. When the GAP logo was created it had the purpose of representing the goals of our program, in other words what the program focused on. The logo is a triangle that on each end has the words physical, mental and social; all this combined contributes to a total well being. It means that to have a better quality of life and to improve health an individual cannot only focus on the physical aspect, but a mental and social aspect as well. This is the 12th year of the program, created in 1998 with hundreds of participants signing in through the years. Its first coordinator was Mr. JosĂŠ PĂŠrez who worked at the Fitness Center for five years. His charisma set the pace with the energy that today you can still can perceive, now with its current coordinator is Mr. Federico Lavarini. Mr. Lavarini has maintained the unity of the group by creating different and challenging programs. At the Fitness Center we would like to give a special thanks to the GAP representative Mr. Ubaldo Bocanegra, a retired LTC from the Army National Guard, who is their spokes person when it comes to coordinating events for the group and to make their concerns be heard. He has greatly contributed to keeping the group focused on exercise activities. Remember, this program is open to everyone that has Tuesday & Thursday available. Come out and have some fun while you exercise.

Army Community Service History of Army Community Service From the pioneer days to the all-volunteer Army of today, the concept of humanitarian concern for the welfare of others exists as a foundation of the Army way of life. Army posts, familiar to the pioneers, were oftentimes isolated and located in hostile and dangerous environments, seldom located near a civilian community, and had limited and infrequent communication with the world outside its protective fortifications. The early day Army existed as a closely knit, distinct and generally self-sufficient society. The pioneer Army wife knew hardship in her environment, but she established an enviable pattern of personal sacrifice and compassion still found in the Army spouse of today. For years, Army wives operated lending closets, thrift shops, and nurseries; raised funds to help the needy; assisted in emergencies; taught and trained the inexperienced; provided care and comfort to the ill and bereaved; and through a grass roots understanding of the Army community, contributed significantly to its stability. An adverse aspect of these social service activities was that they often disappeared or stagnated when their originators transferred or left the service. Army Community Service (ACS) was designed to eliminate this adverse aspect and provide a flexible framework for the operation of a viable system of social services. Changes in the Army community have been substantial and significant, and reflect the changes of the larger society which it serves; however, the major impact of these changes has been most apparent since 1940. In 1940, the active Army numbered 269,000 of whom only 25 percent were married. The advent of World War II (WWII) rapidly altered this picture. The rapid buildup of U.S. defensive forces, and their deployment worldwide had a devastating impact on American Family life. Long separations, lack of communication, meager pay, fear, and reports of casualties brought disruption and insecurity to Army families who shared this experience. An important resource for the alleviation of social welfare problems of Soldiers and their Families came in the 1940s in the form of Army Emergency Relief (AER). Funded by donations of the American public and proceeds of the Irving Berlin Broadway hit “This is the Army” AER offices were located at Army posts throughout the United States in 1941. One large metropolitan AER office, and the only one so established, was located in New York City on February 5th 1942. Staffed by military and civilian personnel, and a large number of civilian volunteers, this unusual quasi military organization operated under the supervision of the 1202nd Service Command Unit. In March 1944, the AER office was redesignated “Personnel Affairs Branch”, but continued its same operations with a slightly altered but effective relationship with AER funding. In operation until the end of WWII, this organization through an interesting coincidence provided the framework for development of ACS more than 20 years later. In providing assistance, the New York AER not only had access to AER funds, but also drew on a network of resources from Salvation Army, Department of Welfare, Navy Relief, Catholic Charities, and many other civic organizations to ease the problems and hardships of Soldiers and their Families. Civilian psychiatrists, social workers, lawyers, and the police donated their professional expertise to assist in difficult cases, free of charge. The first of a series of two articles. To be continued in the next issue of DFMWR Live & Explore.

Gross Motor Skills

From: Family Advocacy Educator

Gross motor skills are those that involve movement of the whole body or large parts of the body. Children develop gross motor skills in the same order (for example, crawling comes before walking); however, each child has his or her own pace for development and learning. As you play with your children and observe their indoor and outdoor activities, you learn a lot about the physical skills they have acquired and the rate at which they learn new skills. A great deal of physical development occurs in the preschool years. Most preschool children love activities that involve the use of their gross motor skills. For most schoolage children, acquiring physical skills is closely tied to feeling accepted by peers and developing a positive self –esteem. At this age, children are perfecting coordination of large and small muscles and eye hands coordination. They also develop a sense of rhythm and enjoy dancing. This month, the Bowling Center is your best choice to go with your children and with the Family. By bowling you are giving your child the opportunity to enhance his/her gross motor skills, provide opportunities to enhance their social skills, language and the most important: you will be sharing Family Prime Time, after all this is your Family…

Bowling Tips on How To Bowl a Perfect Strike

By: John Tenn

Every time a bowler throws their first ball in a frame, there is ONE hope in the forefront of his mind, “Please let it be a STRIKE!” Knocking down all ten pins with a single bowl is the best possible outcome and the goal to which all bowlers aspire. Where do you begin? Right where you stand; Literally.Your foot placement is absolutely fundamental to your success. Even if you do everything else correctly, if your feet are not where they need to be, the ball won’t go where it needs to either! Are you right or left handed? If you are left handed, aim your right second toe at the 1-pin. If you’re right handed, aim your left second toe at the 1-pin. It may feel odd at first, but make no mistake... it works! Watch the foot placement of pro bowlers and you’ll see they do it too. Keeping your proper foot aimed at the head pin allows your shoulders to relax and square up with the foul line, making the ball more likely to go where you want it. Cradle your ball and retract your arm.

Fort Buchanan Ten Pin Bowlers

Fort Buchanan’s Ten Pin Bowlers that reperesented us in the 7th Youth International Tournament are listed below: (photo above) 1. Zoriani Reyes, 7 years old (Gold in singles, Silver in teams and Bronze in doubles) 2. William Eaton, 7 years old (Silver in teams) 3. Edgar Jeriel Burgos, 6 years old (Silver in teams) 4. Astrid Lopez, 12 years old (Silver in singles, Bronze in teams) 5. Yarelis Mar Burgos, 12 years old (Bronze in singles and teams) 6. Steven Eaton, 11 years old (Bronze in teams) 7. Marangela Moczo, 14 years old (Bronze in teams) 8. Erick Guzman, Eliezer Morales, Krystal Reyes and Camille Burgos played in the 16 to 19 category. These players although didn’t get any medals all of them played way above their average.

You’re just four steps away from bowling your first strike ball! If you are right handed, step with your right foot, then with your left foot. As you step with the left foot your ball arcs downward. Take your third step with your right foot as the force of the ball lifts your arm upwards. Release the ball and use your left leg as a counterweight to keep your balance. Release the ball. It’s important to release the ball at the proper time. If you release too soon, your ball will start rolling too soon and it won’t have enough energy to knock the pins down. The best time to release the ball is just as centrifugal force begins to guide the ball upward. Be sure your wrist is straight and relaxed and that you’re aiming for the strike zone (the little “x” on the lane in between the arrows). Follow it through. As you release the ball, remember to NOT look at it. Your eyes should remain fixed on your target and your arm should continue its upward arc until after the ball has been released. Where your eyes are looking is where your shoulders and feet are usually pointing. And we know that to bowl a strike, they all need to be facing forward! By following these easy to learn techniques, you’ll be bowling strike after strike.

Fort Buchanan Ten Pin Bowlers is a youth bowling league from 5 to 19 years of age. This is our first international bowling tournament; but for the past 2 years our youth bowlers have competed in local tournaments at Aguadilla, Ponce, Cupey and Carolina winning gold, silver and bronze medals also. Last year was the 1st Puerto Rico Youth Open in which we won gold, silver and bronze medals in different categories. It has been a long road for us but we have accomplished this with the help of our great coaches Aníbal Reyes, Angel Morales, Yamitza Burgos, Iza Marrero, Francisco Laureano, Carmelo Ortiz, Mariaida Maldonado, and Rafael Burgos; also with the support of the parents and the dedication of our players and board of directors (Yolanda Asencio, Bengie Lopez and Sara Suero). Our league meets every Saturday from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Bowling Center. Our new season starts on August 7 at 10:00 am at the Buchanan Bowling Center.
