The Army Volunteer Corps mission statement reflects the Army tradition of caring for its own and encouraging care for others in the pursuit of a cohesive community. Closely related to this tradition are central Army concepts regarding volunteer service: • Volunteer programs promote selfless service across generations • Volunteer programs promote personal and Professional development • Volunteer programs provide improved well-being and quality of life, a sense of belonging and ownership Value Added: • During times of crisis and increased need for homeland security, strong, vital volunteer-based organizations bring confidence to Soldiers that their families will have the support and resources to manage during deployments. • Army volunteers provide a special link between installation organizations, Army communities and the civilian community. Through daily activities and personal experiences, volunteers often become aware of situations and
conditions that require formal attention and official consideration. • When resources are stretched and stressed, volunteers sustain and add vitality to programs that support Soldiers and their families. • Volunteers help market Army programs and services by sharing their knowledge with community members. These volunteers lend credibility to these services because they are also members of the community. • Volunteers learn or improve skills and gain work experience that can increase self-confidence and improve marketability for paid positions. • Army volunteers learn about community resources making them more self-reliant. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Advises Consumers with New Resources on What to Do if Their Identity is Stolen Identity theft has been the top complaint consumers reported to the FTC for the last several years. There are a few new twists on ID theft that the military community might be interested in child, tax, and medical IDT. Knowing what to do is important because an identity thief can hijack your tax refund, alter your medical records, or prevent you from getting credit or a job. They can even borrow money in your child’s name. FTC has just announced some new free publications that explain how to protect your child’s information and your own, and the immediate steps to take to limit damage from identity theft: • Taking Charge: What To Do If Your Identity Is Stolen http://www.ftc.gov/ bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/idtheft/ idt04.pdf is a handbook with tips about protecting your information, and instructions, sample forms, and letters to help recover from theft.
• Safeguarding Your Child’s Future <http://ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/idtheft/idt08.pdf> is a guide to help parents and guardians protect a child’s information and repair damage caused by theft. • Identity Theft: What To Know, What To Do <http://ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/ consumer/idtheft/idt01.pdf is an easy-to-copy brochure covering the basics: how to avoid and respond to identity theft. Servicemembers can download these materials or order copies in bulk. (http://bulkorder.ftc.gov.) We also have 3 new 1-minute Videos <http:// www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/microsites/ idtheft2012/> see them and all the materials at http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/ edu/microsites/idtheft2012/ All of this content is free and in the public domain - people can use it and share it far and wide: they can link to it, hand out copies, or use the content in newsletters, websites, social network pages. The NCO Journal After 9/11, when the nation was still in shock over the unprecedented attack on U.S. soil, Shannen Rossmiller, a country judge and mother of three in rural Montana, was formulating a plan. Soon she was devouring literature on Islamic culture, teaching herself Arabic, and preparing to infiltrate the central nervous system of global terror: online networks. Her efforts succeeded beyond imagination. Posing as an Islamic terrorist under dozens of screen aliases, she joined forces with the FBI and started trolling jihadist chat rooms, striking up conversations at 3am with men as far away as Pakistan, and amassing evidence against an array of suspected terrorists both at home and abroad. Her work laid the foundation for the online searches so crucial to law enforcement’s fight against terror today. Shannen’s husband, Randy, uncovered her double life after a chat room terrorist wiped out the family computer and reports rolled in that the Rossmillers were being targeted for reprisal. Undeterred, Shannen started working with the FBI on sting operations, involving everything from jihadist cells to weapons caches to bomb plots, and bringing many of her targets to justice, as well as pioneering the digital entrapment tactics that are at the forefront of today’s war on terror. This is the story of one woman’s unexpected courage and how it changed the face of this global struggle. 8

Recreation Events: August Trip to Culebrita Island
Hot Weather Training Tips In recent weeks on the island, and one of the main topics in the news, have been the extreme heat we have been experiencing topping 90 degrees and very little rain. For those that practice Outdoor Activities here are some tips to keep in mind: 1. Use light fabric and light colored clothing: These repel the heat better. 2. Drink plenty of fluids: Preferably water, if exercising for more than an hour electrolytes drinks are recommended. If running, 4 or 5 ounces per mile is recommended. 3. Do not consume alcohol or caffeine drinks: These contributes to dehydration. 4. Consume fruit throughout the day: They should be part of our everyday diet anyway as they contain water. 5. Wear sun protection: SPF 15 or above and reapply when necessary. 6. Pay attention to the weather forecast. 7. If possible get in the shade as often as possible. 8. Try exercising early in the day or later in the afternoon or night when it’s cooler.

We have various leagues like the Adult Bowling Leagues, One Senior League, a Ladies League and a junior program now called USBC Youth League. The Junior league started in 1993 and eventually grew to over 200 kids ages 4 to 21. The league’s first years were very successful. In 1996 Jorge Toledo, a youth bowler from Fort Buchanan represented Puerto Rico at The National Coca Cola Tournament in Ohio and finished in 5th place, in this tournament kids from all over the United States compete. In 1997, Iris Vega participated at Tennessee and finished 15th place. In 2000 at Las Vegas Nevada, Debbie Acevedo finished 1st Place at the National Level. For the last two years 2011 and 2012 we’ve won the Copa Orlando A Izquierdo Muñoz at the Bolera Caribe in Ponce Puerto Rico and on July 2012 the League went to the Dominican Republic to compete in the 9th Torneo Internacional Infantil-Juvenil at the Sebelen Bowling Center and won First place in the Category C on teams and Doubles. The league plays every Saturday from 10:00 am to 1:30 pm from August to May every year. The Bowling Center has also been recognized by the Army and in 2003 the Business Manager, Mr. Luis R. Torres was selected the Excellence In Management Award for Army Wide Medium Size Bowling Center.

DFMWR Happenings
A Celebration of Our Freedom!!! This year Fort Buchanan’s 4th of July Celebration was attended by those who would not let the rain showers stop them from enjoying the games, music, dancing, food and fireworks. Most of all, those who value the importance of remembering the historic events that made possible the freedom our Nation enjoys today. Top notch musical entertainment such as Batukealo, Back to the 80’s Music Band and NG-2 transformed the parking lot into a dance floor. Children had an awsome time with the rides, crafts and games and to top it all the fireworks at the end of the evening were spectacular! Garrison Commander, COL Caryn S. Heard, with 24 hours in command, presented her message to attendees as a preamble for the fireworks display. Thanks to all our sponsors for contributing greatly to the success of the event!
Top Photo: Live bands kept everyone entertained throughout the day. Photo (2nd from top): Attendants were not muted by the rain. Photo (3rd from top): Post Command staff: Magda Figueroa, Executive Officer; Command Sgt. Maj. Derrick T. Simpson; Garrison Commander Col. Caryn S. Heard; Deputy to the Garrison Commander, Mr. Gunnar Pedersen and Deputy Commander, Lt. Col. Kenneth M. Hammond. Photo (bottom left): Hipólito Serrano at the Center (Air Force Veteran) is surrounded by his family, Hipólito, Jr. and his wife Ivette Santiago, Amanda (daughter in law) and her brother Ronald as they waited to see the Fireworks display.
Thank you to our sponsors for all their support and commitment to our community:
