Keeping the promise... Understanding Post-Traumatic Stress with

PTSD Coach

Combat deployments can sometimes result in exposure to traumatic events, such as losing a close friend, bodily harm, violent experiences or even extended separation from loved ones. Ongoing stress reactions to these situations may eventually, but not always, lead to the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The Department of Veterans Affairs’ National Center for PTSD and the Defense Department’s National Center for Telehealth and Technology collaborated to create a free mobile app to help service members and veterans learn about and manage the symptoms that commonly occur after traumatic events. PTSD Coach is a supplement to psychological health care and support received by service members and veterans experiencing signs or symptoms of PTSD. Family and friends of service members and veterans are also encouraged to use to the mobile app to learn more about PTSD and support resources. The app is currently available for Apple iPhone and iPad via iTunes, as well as Android-powered devices.

Life’s Challenges

Throughout the course of our lives, it is likely that we are going to encounter a time when we will have to manage special needs. The definition of special needs is, any need that requires the attention of a specialist other than a general practitioner. As we develop in life, the idea of having a special needs revolves in our mind and we start to adjust the likelihood degree. Then we start to think about people who were able to cope with the news of a physical, emotional or intellectual limitation because of a disease, traumatic event or genetic condition. We also think about those extraordinary stories of people that did what their doctors, professional or love one said they will not be able to do. A person with Down syndrome handles a business, a person without upperextremities flying an airplane, a person with autism working or being a basketball assistant and a person without extremities being a motivational speaker and demonstrating resilience despite the challenge of having a disability.

Army Family Covenant

You can download the PTSD Coach app anonymously, and if you share your data with a health care provider, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) laws maintain your privacy. For peace of mind, you might consider adding a strong password to keep your mobile device secure.

by identifying people who can provide the user with emotional support and add contact info to the phone. When a service member or veteran is in need of immediate support, the app can link the user directly to the Veterans Crisis Line for immediate intervention and care. The app also features educational information about trauma, PTSD and care resources for on-the-go needs.

How the App Works

The Benefits Knowing the facts about PTSD can make a real difference in the lives of those who need support. PTSD Coach provides service members, veterans, their friends and families with dependable resources they can trust. Many service members who experience PTSD symptoms can benefit from care and support, but some fear that they may be considered weak or that leaders or unit members might lose confidence in their abilities if they seek care. The information available through the PTSD Coach app can help service members and their loved ones overcome those concerns and obtain accurate information about PTSD and find the support they need.

Service members and veterans can use PTSD Coach to learn more about PTSD, conduct a self-assessment, manage symptoms and find support resources. For example, when the user completes a self-assessment of PTSD symptoms, the app will provide individualized feedback with the option to track symptom changes over time. While PTSD Coach does not formally diagnose PTSD, it can help the user manage their PTSD symptoms by providing suggestions on coping skills and assistance for common symptoms, including relaxation and self-help techniques. The app can also be used to create and connect with a support network

There is abundant evidence that demonstrates that you choose to overcome or to surrender to your special needs. At first, you may have to dispute or debate your ideas or other’s affirmations similar to: “I will never be able to overcome this limitation”, “Because of this limitation, my life will be miserable” or “You will not have to do anything, I will take care of your needs”. Improve your resilience by loading your mind with ideas related to resources available, alternatives, new technology, programs, support groups, support organizations, new approaches, and innovative scientific findings. Learn a new skill, learn how to use other parts of your body, calibrate techniques, and connect with people that had overcome the limitation. Build a plan, use new strategies, learn about the law and organizations that provide assistant or advocate for you. When you focus your mind on these thoughts, you will notice a boost in your enthusiasm and energy. Yes, it is time for a new perspective; focus your mind on the optimism panorama. Challenge yourself by working

on new possibilities and developing other areas you had on hold. Remember that what you keep or bring to your mind will trigger emotions or actions. It is not the event or a condition that triggers your emotions or actions. If you interpret the circumstance as there are no options you may feel hopeless and decide to be isolated. There is no magic, just the view of the reality as it is. Many people start to live a more plentiful and satisfactory life after they were confronted with a special needs. They opted for resilience after the adversity. Therefore, any activity that helps you build self-awareness, self-control, optimism, relationships, mental agility, and identify and use your strength of character will affect your resilience and prepare you to confront life’s cycle events, nature’s challenges, accidents and adversities. The Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation works constantly to bring you choices for resilience. By: Raymond Morales, Exceptional Family Member Program Manager

Community Recreation Division New Year’s Fitness Resolutions That Really Work!

As we begin a New Year, most of us have some things that we would like to improve upon or not repeat this year. The most popular New Year’s resolutions include achieving a stronger, healthier more youthful body through diet and exercise. This year do something different as you sit down to write your New Year’s resolutions and goals for 2012…”This year I am going to focus on just one or two goals and make those my New Year’s resolutions.” If you can do that and one of those is to lose weight or tone up your body for a new and healthier you… consider setting up a home gym or adding to your existing home gym using affordable but effective fitness products. Make sure that the exercise equipment that you use targets the areas of your body that you wish to improve. But sometimes diet and exercise can be routine and boring! So you may ask yourself: “How do I stick with this New Year’s resolution and make it work?” First focus on changing your attitude and write down the positives of why you need to include diet and exercise in your life. Second, change your routine! Since we are all creatures of habit, change your lifestyle: Find something physical that you enjoy doing and switch it up each day so that you get a variety of exercise by combining various fitness products with aerobic exercise. Next follow a healthy eating plan, not a diet but a healthier fueling of your body and concentrate on portion control by using the suggested serving sizes. In summary in order to achieve your New Year’s resolutions for a healthier you, make it fun and part of a lifestyle that works for you by changing your attitudes about healthy eating and exercise. If you can accomplish this by the time you sit down to write out your New Year’s resolutions for 2013… Look in a mirror and say I did it! A balanced diet and exercise program is now part of your new healthy lifestyle! Source: articlebase.com

Martin Luther King, Jr. electrified the Nation when he delivered his I Have a Dream speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. King’s prophetic utterances started the long overdue process of changing America’s idea of itself. His words would enter the American lexicon, galvanizing the civil rights movement, becoming a touchstone for all that the Country might someday achieve. The Dream is the first book about Martin Luther King., Jr.’s legendary I Have a Dream speech. Opening with an enthralling account of the August day in 1963 that saw 250,000 Americans converge at the March on Washington, The Dream delves into the fascinating and little-known history of King’s speech. Hansen explores King’s compositional strategies and techniques, and proceeds to a brilliant analysis of the I Have a Dream speech itself, examining it on various levels: as a political treatise, a work of poetry, and as a masterfully delivered and improvised sermon bursting with biblical language and imagery. In tracing the legacy of I Have a Dream since 1963, The Dream insightfully considers how King’s incomparable speech “has slowly remade the American imagination,” and led us closer to King’s visionary goal of a redeemed America.

What Is Resiliency? Resiliency is the ability to cope with, adapt to, and overcome challenges. With resiliency training, children and families learn not just to meet challenges but also to become stronger in the face of challenges. Developed by a UCLA-Harvard team, FOCUS teaches military children and families affected by multiple deployments to understand their emotional reactions, communicate more clearly, solve problems more effectively, and set and achieve their goals. Parents and children—from preschoolers to teens—learn to use tools that will better prepare them for each new deployment. Families are directly impacted when a parent returns with significant levels of combat operational stress. A parent might return home and encounter deployment reminders in their daily life, leading to changes in their mood and behavior. These changes can be upsetting to children and spouses, and affect parenting and marital relationships. FOCUS helps families understand how reactions to deployment reminders can influence relationships and teaches skills to deal with them. For more information visit www.focusproject.org

FCC Care

The U.S. Army Family Child Care (FCC) Program is one child care option provided to military family members, Department of Defense civilians and Department of Defense contractors through the Army Child, Youth & School Services (CYSS). The FCC Program is provided by military family members or civilians working as independent contractors in individual housing units located on a military installation. The FCC program provides the same quality care of the Child Development Center and School Age Services program on a smaller scale. DFMWR News Reflections On A Year Of Challenges and Accomplishments At The Golf Club Thank you to the Community Members that came to Give the perfect Gift

As we look forward to a great golfing year in 2012, I also reflect on 2011. During 2011 we accomplished many additions and improvements as well as suffered some challenges. Year 2011 was an extremely wet year with much rain. The conditions caused many challenges with maintaining the course at a consistent level. There were many times we were unable to mow and on occasions the roughs were extreme.

of the locker rooms, pro shop and snack bar. We will focus on aesthetics and sincerely hope the changes will make all of our customers proud to play at Fort Buchanan. Work has also resumed on the installation of a new irrigation system. Completion of the project will allow for better treatment of the course through proper fertilization and other aspects. Our 2012 tournament schedule is complete and available at the golf shop. Make your plans early as we are expecting a very successful and busy 2012.

We were able to make some improvements such as the replacement of the Driving Range net, new hitting mats and replaced the cover so we can practice in the shade. Our greens are improving and the focus this year is to continue to improve the condition of the greens.

For more information please contact the Golf Pro Shop at 787-707-3980 or visit the Golf Course Complex.

We are looking forward to some improvements including some remodeling

By: Mr. Jim Doulin, Golf Manager / PGA Certified

The Golf Course staff looks forward to seeing everyone often this year and wishes all a Healthy and Happy 2012.

Once again Fort Buchanan’s Community members stepped forward to help others in need at the American Red Cross Blood Drive held on December 15th, 2011. The blood bank was able to add over 50 donations to their supply. Thank you to all!
