And talking about the season What’s So Special About February? Black History Month
We owe the celebration of Black History Month, and more importantly, the study of black history, to Dr. Carter G. Woodson. Born to parents who were former slaves, he spent his childhood working in the Kentucky coal mines and enrolled in high school at age twenty. He graduated within two years and later went on to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard.
The Super Bowl is the championship game of the National Football League
(since 1967), the premier association of professional American football. In most years, the Super Bowl is the most-watched American television broadcast. Many popular singers and musicians have performed during the event’s pre-game and halftime ceremonies. The day on which the Super Bowl is played is now considered to be a de facto American national holiday, called Super Bowl Sunday. Washington’s Birthday is a United States federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday of February. It is also commonly known as Presidents Day (or Presidents’ Day). As the first federal holiday to honor an American citizen, the holiday was celebrated on Washington’s actual birthday, February 22. On January 1, 1971 the federal holiday was shifted to the third Monday in February by the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. Chinese New Year or Spring Festival is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. It is often called the Lunar New Year, especially by people in mainland China and Taiwan. The festival traditionally begins on the first day of the first month (Chinese: pinyin: zhng yuè) in the Chinese calendar and ends on the 15th; this day is called Lantern Festival. Chinese New Year’s Eve is known as Chúx. It literally means “Year-pass Eve”. The Chinese New Year By the Chinese Calendar 2010 is the Year of the Tiger, Feb 14th. Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) Mardi Gras arrived in North America as a sedate French Catholic tradition with the Le Moyne brothers, Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville and Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville, in the late 17th century, when King Louis XIV sent the pair to defend France’s claim on the territory of Louisiane, which included what are now the U.S. states of Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. The expedition, entered the mouth of the Mississippi River on the evening of March 2, 1699, Lundi Gras. The party proceeded upstream to a place on the west bank about 60 miles down river from where New Orleans is today, where a small tributary emptied into the great river, and made camp. This was on March 3, 1699, Mardi Gras day, so in honor of this holiday, Iberville named the spot Point du Mardi Gras (French: “Mardi Gras Point”) and called the small tributary Bayou Mardi Gras. Bienville went on to found the settlement of Mobile, Alabama in 1702 as the first capital of French Louisiana, and in 1703 the Mardi Gras tradition began with celebrations by the French settlers in that city. By 1720, Biloxi had been made capital of Louisiana. In 1723, the capital of Louisiana was moved to New Orleans, founded in 1718. Since the Community Club & Conference Center started offering the BBQ at the Patio it has undergone many changes to fine-tune the needs of customers. Patio umbrellas were purchased, then, the setting was moved from the parking in front of the building to a side of the parking that has a grassy area with fully grown trees, and most recently a large deck with access to the Borinquen Bar and Lounge was constructed. In the local Puerto Rican community there is a trend for outdoor bars, and an all time preference for grilled food in informal settings where extended family members can participate. Traditionally, locals enjoy sharing with friends informally at places where they can watch passer-bys who can join in at will. In a tropical island with average daily temperatures of 85 degrees Fahrenheit year round and lush greenery informal outdoor dining is the way to go. This has been demonstrated by the Club’s loyal group of BBQ participants that meet every Thursday after 1600 to share with friends and family their grilled favorites at a very affordable price. Many stop for takeouts and enjoy the grilled Ribs, Pinchos (Kabobs), Angus Burgers, grilled Sweet Potatoes and Corn on the Cob (and more) at home after a long days work. Be there next Thursday and taste grilled delicacies!

Discovering Puerto Rico and it’s Attractions
Rincón “The grandeur of a country is not measured by the extension of its territory, but by the greatness of its people.”, said a wise Puerto Rican. Puerto Rico’s west coast has sand, sun and sea, but so far, it’s avoided the overdevelopment that can turn beach towns Above: a romantic sunset at the beach into generic megaresorts. Instead you can find friendly cafes, funky surf shops, small towns and tranquil beaches on the byways. Rincón, on Puerto Rico’s northwest coast, has the laidback vibe of a surfer town. But the chirping of the coquis — tiny tree frogs that sing dusk to dawn — leaves no doubt that you are in Puerto Rico. In the early 1800’s Rincón was frequently attacked by English and French invaders, corsairs and pirates, who would plunder and kill at will. The key ocean-view property in Rincon was a watch station on its highest peak, aptly named Atalaya (watchtower). Our most famous native pirate, Roberto Cofresí, loved Rincón and supposedly buried the bulk of his treasure in our shores and hills. After the pirate era, things went quiet in Rincón, except for small smuggling operations that continued for centuries. In 1892, the Spaniards built a lighthouse to mark the westernmost point of the Island and to warn passing ships of the shallow reefs that stretched out for miles. After four hundred years of Spanish rule, Puerto Rico became a U.S.Territory, at the end of the Spanish- American War. For Rincón, life under the new regime continued to be idyllic and sleepy. At the height of the economic depression of the 1930’s and during World War II, most of the young men were forced to leave Rincón, either to work abroad, or because they were drafted into the U.S. Army, for combat duty. The population hardly increased (from 6,641, in 1899 to 9,094, in 1970). The current population of Rincón is around 15,000. In the late 1950’s, the Sea Beach Colony became the first tourist destination. Later in the 1960’s,Villa Cofresí became the first beachfront hotel. Rubén Caro, then a young teacher, saw the merits of tourism in the area and became the visionary who jump-started the industry in Rincón. He went on to occupy the Mayor’s office. To this day, Villa Cofresí continues to be a popular spot with international and local tourists. The 1968 international surfing competition literally put Rincón on the map (up to then, you could not find Rincón on some maps). Shortly after, a trickle of surfers decided to become permanent guests and began to invite their friends over. Several of them opened successful businesses. Local trepidation about the “Hippie Gringo” colony was dissipated, when they adapted to our island lifestyle and remained neutral about local affairs. Today, it’s all good in Rincón. During the Winter season, over 1,000 accommodations are usually filled. During the Summer season, local tourists travel from the big cities for weekend and holiday stays. The new municipal government, led by a proactive mayor with a solid plan to bring tourism to the next natural level, has already obtained funding for infrastructure and capital improvements that will help create and maintain a higher level of interest towards Rincón as a unique destination. While the language of Puerto Rico is Spanish, many in Rincon speak English. It helps to initially learn at least two phrases: por favor (please) and gracias (thanks). It is also good to learn the Spanish names of your favorite drinks and dishes.
Rincón offers the most whale sightings in all of Puerto Rico during the prime season (January through March, peaking in February). The observation park at the historic El Faro Lighthouse serves as a prime vantage point for whale-watching, with binocular-wielding tourists lined up most every day. Also known as Parque El Faro de Rincon (Rincon’s Lighthouse Park), the site is located at the western edge of the town, attracting locals and tourists alike. Courtesy of: gotopuertorico.com

Some historians believe that Valentine’s Day originated with the ancient Roman feast of Lupercalia, which was celebrated on February 15th in honor of Lupercus, the Roman god of agriculture and shepherds. On the eve of this festival, the names of Roman girls were written on slips and placed in jars. A young man would draw a slip, and the girl whose name he chose was supposed to be his sweetheart for the year. Another legend tells of St. Valentine, a priest. Emperor Claudius II had decreed that no man could marry or become engaged because the Roman Empire needed dedicated soldiers. Valentine defied the decree and secretly married a number of young couples. He was arrested, imprisoned, and put to death on February 14th, 270 AD, the eve of Lupercalia. He was regarded as a Christian martyr. Christians honored his memory by doing away with the pagan festival and absorbing it into St. Valentine’s Day.

Choosing a Romantic Valentine Gift Men, women, teenagers or even youngsters are always looking forward to celebrating St.Valentine’s Day. On this very day people can show their affection and respect towards each other, talk about their love and give loving hearts. Also it is nice to give presents which reveal your deep beautiful feelings. Traditional Valentine gifts Both men and women become very scrupulous while trying to find something special for this particular occasion. This situation might turn to be a challenging task for everybody. The main and important idea of giving gifts on such a day is to express your intense feelings and love that is why this romantic gift does not have to be that expensive. Simple gifts are the ones the most women and men remember the most and moreover very expensive gifts can put the receiver in a confusing situation. Usually people give flowers, chocolates, wine, and valentine’s heart shaped cards with a nice romantic some love poem. Sometimes men and women exchange personalized gifts. To make your search for a really wonderful and appropriate valentine present for your beloved one you
can use the following tips. Be original If you really want to astound your sweetheart with the gift you’ve prepared let it go beyond the usual ones like giving teddy bears, chocolates, personalized mugs and likewise. If it is your first Valentine you can give your girl-friend beautiful flowers that she is fond of. Using the delivery service send the bouquet to the place where she works. It will be a wonderful surprise for her to receive the gift. Experienced master florists can help you a lot in choosing the right flower arrangement for this day. If you know that your beloved loves house plants such as Boston fern or Peace lily then this would be far better than any ordinary flower bouquet. Some house plants will flower for most of the year. Thus insuring this gift will be kept for ever. Another idea of giving a stunning Valentine present to your sweetheart is something that can be always in his or her sight, making the place beautiful and cozy. It can be any digital image on canvas. It looks fabulous like a real masterpiece. You only have to think what photo will be the best for this canvas printing. If you do not have any image to
be printed on canvas you can purchase any of canvas prints which are available and to your taste. Long-lasting canvas print is a good thing to give a person you adore as a keepsake showing your boundless love and infinite devotion. Be careful... Someone who tries to be extra original at giving Valentine gift, but choosing a pet as a present you have to be double scrupulous. Do not buy an animal until you are sure it is desirable by the receiver. Otherwise your eccentricity can make them both unhappy: the poor animal and the receiver. This confusing situation can cause “certain” feelings which are unnatural on such a special day. Remember Buying a Valentine gift for your love one you should think over the way you are going to give it to her or him. Your feelings and the way you tell about them play more significant part than the gift itself.

Bowling Tips You Can Practice
By: Sean Lannin If you are like me, you love to practice bowling as much as playing. Not only does practice improve our skills for when we play a real game, but there is something to be said for being able to focus on what it is we want to improve… and loose ourselves in the act of perfecting our skills. The Christmas tree pattern is not something many bowlers know about, certainly your average recreational bowler will not concern themselves, and shows there is a lot more to the game than meets the eye of the casual observer. To the untrained observer, bowling itself is merely a game where players use a heavy ball to knock down a number of obstacles that are placed on the other end of a long, flat corridor. However, there is a little more to the game than that, and as it stands, bowling is an international pastime with a large number of aficionados who all have their own tips and tricks to score higher and win over the other competitors. When listening in to the conversations between seasoned bowlers, you will soon learn that there is so much more to this game than meets the eye.
Did you know? The Bowling Center opened on August 28th, 1992. It was last renovated in May 2007 when the Bowling Pinsetters and Scoring Systems were changed to state of the art equipment. Fort Buchanan’s Bowling Center currently has the best equipment available in Puerto Rico. There are a total of 10 bowling centers in the Island and only two can compete with Fort Buchanan. Attendees can enjoy 18 lanes of bowling, Disco Bowling, Bumpers, music, video games and a great selection of food from the Snack Bar.
One such item that rarely factors into the mainstream perception of the game is the oil pattern. The bowling lane will need to be cleaned and the wood or synthetic material preserved. To this end, many proprietors use a specific kind of oil that not only protects the floor material, but also adds the glossy shine that is so pleasing to the eye. Experienced bowlers know that there are different kinds of patterns that emerge when the oil is applied, and during tournaments bowlers work long and hard to find out the patterns that have been laid down; one such pattern is referred to as the Christmas tree pattern. I am always looking for ways to improve my game, and I learned about this bowling tip some years ago that has increased my scoring. The name comes from the shape of the pattern and it’s resemblance to a Christmas tree if you were to look at it from above, and reflects the fact that the oil is laid down in a Christmas tree shape pattern, leaving certain areas of the lane dry. The new machines used by bowling alleys make it easy to repeat this pattern from one day to the next and is making this pattern more popular. These bowling tips will help with your Christmas tree pattern practice: 1. For right hander’s, it is important to move the ball closer to the right side than you might ordinarily do. The goal is to take advantage of the fact that there is not much oil laid down to help your ball to project to the pins. If you are a left hander, obviously you are aiming for the other side. 2. Experiment with your desired breakpoint. You may need to move your stand point more than you might need to move your target. Before changing your aim by three boards, decide instead to move your feet, and adjust your aim by only one board. 3. Do not be afraid to waste a ball or two in trying to find out how far the oil pattern reaches. Novices wrongly believe that the oil pattern will reach all the way to the pins, whereas in reality it may only go as far back as 35 feet. This is the reason that practice play is so important before you decide to keep score! 4. If the oil is very heavily applied, be sure to use a ball with a dull finish. A shiny ball will make adjustments to the Christmas tree pattern harder since the ball will be more inclined to roll the direct line. It is important that you practice being able to recognize this patter, and devote practice time to this pursuit. The most important aspects of playing this pattern are - for the intermediate bowler - to fist of all recognize the pattern in the first place, and then gain a feel for the length to which it is applied. Experiment with different approaches and find something that works for you, so when you see the pattern in league play you are able to easily make your adjustments and improve your scores.

SPORTS
Ways to keep Yourself Fit By: Cali Smith Make it hard to give up early - whether you are walking, running or biking, go out a certain distance, not in circles or around the block or a track. If you go out a certain distance then you will be forced to at least walk back. Pick a reasonable distance and commit to it, then increase the distance slowly every other day. Do this 4 to 5 times a week (3 is not enough) The Exercise Bike is one of the most distinctive pieces of household physical exercise equipment. They have been improved over the years so that they are no longer giant alloy frames that get in the way. They are now slick, easy to transfer and have a potpourri of features such as: a choice of resistance degrees, heart rate monitors, an assortment of displays, and some even come with a built-in magazine rack. Stretching exercises are great. Sitting in front of a computer all day eventually leads to sore shoulders, back, and neck. For the back, stand with your feet slightly apart and reach with your arms to the ceiling then down to your without bending your knees toes. For your neck and shoulders, link both hands behind your back and stretch your arms back while looking up at the ceiling. Starting a fitness training program for your child can be very easy if you just use some initiative. You don’t have to get them to the gym which is boring for them and expensive for you, but you can use other methods. Make sure that they don’t watch TV for more than 1 hour at a time. If they are watching a movie, make sure that they don’t get to watch anything else or play computer games that day. Rather encourage them to play outside. Plan your meals. Don’t eat whatever thing and the whole thing that you get your hands on. Even while grocery shopping, read the labels and dietary values. Make the stylish choices. Eat unmarked fruits and vegetables as an alternative of packaged provisions. Use foodstuffs completed up of complete wheat to a certain extent than wheat flour. Reduce salt and sugar drinking and boundary the eating of coffee, tea and cold drinks. Instead, go for hose down. To perform pushups lie flat on your stomach. Bend your elbows and bring your hands with your palms on the ground to shoulder level. Your toes should be tucked under your feet so the top of your feet will not be touching the ground. Now you will straighten your arms and push your body off the floor. Keep your body straight and hold this for a couple seconds. Finally, lower your body back down so your chest touches the floor. To boost your cardiovascular system, you may find treadmills, exercise bikes, and elliptical trainers valuable. These are staples for those who want to burn the fat and develop the lower limbs. In fact, everybody find these the most important equipment for fitness training. These can never be absent from any gym and can even have their own space in a home. These makes jogging and similar exercises possible even in the most uncooperative weather.
Acai Side Effects
By: Patrick Ray Acai berry juice is at the top of the superfruits category. In my work as a nutritionist, I have studied quite a few superfoods and acai berry is impressive. It has a great range of nutrients, essential fatty acids, and an awesome antioxidant profile. Definitely a product to look into if you are following a healthy lifestyle. In todays world of prescription drugs, people have started assuming that natural substances like fruits and vegetables may also have adverse side effects. Especially if they are marketed as being healthy. Acai berries have been consumed by the people of Northern Brazil for thousands of years. In fact, it is such a respected food source, acai berries and acai juice are a part of the folklore of the indigenous people of the rainforest. There are no known adverse acai side effects. Higher energy levels, better nutrition, increased stamina have all been reported by thousands of people on the internet. No acai side effects. I think if a person tried really hard, they could eat enough acai berries or drink enough acai juice to get a little sick to their stomach. That isn’t any different than any food, though. I have researched it extensively and still can’t find any hint of natural acai products having side effects. This doesn’t carry over to all the acai supplements. There are a great many opportunistic, and slightly predatory, supplement manufacturers making products guaranteeing weight loss and other unsupported benefits. These “miracle” supplements are the only products that are likely to have side effects. That’s because they add a bunch of other stuff that isn’t purely food. Avoid products that have caffeine. Also avoid products that are promising instant or amazing results overnight. The ideal thing to look for is acai products that are pure acai juice or freeze-dried acai berry powder. Stick to them and you’ll get all the good acai offers without any acai berry hype or acai side effects. As with all choices, I encourage you to do some research. Look around on the internet and ask qualified professionals. The more informed you are about the subject, the better you’ll be at making the best choice of which acai product is right for you.

Featured Book of the Month:
The Fort Buchanan Post Library celebrates National Black History Month Black History Month is a national annual observance for remembrance of important people and events in the history of the African diaspora. It is celebrated annually in the United States and Canada in February and the United Kingdom in the month of October. The remembrance originated in 1926 by historian Carter G. Woodson as “Negro History Week”. Woodson chose the second week of February because it marked the birthdays of two Americans who greatly influenced the lives and social condition of African Americans: former President Abraham Lincoln and abolitionist and former slave Frederick Douglass. Woodson also founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, now the Association for the Study of African American Life and History.

Dear John
by Nicholas Sparks
Dear John by Nicholas Sparks is available as a traditional book as well as audio format on CD and Playaway. An angry rebel, John dropped out of school and enlisted in the Army, not knowing what else to do with his life until he meets Savannah, the girl of his dreams. Savannah helps John deal with his father by explaining that John’s father’s obsession for coin collecting is related to Asperger syndrome. John and Savannah’s mutual attraction quickly grows into the kind of love that leaves Savannah waiting for John to finish his tour of duty, and John wanting to settle down with the woman who has captured his heart. But 9/11 changes everything. John feels it is his duty to re-enlist. And sadly, the long separation finds Savannah falling in love with someone else. Dear John, the letter read, and with those two words, a heart was broken and two lives were changed forever. Returning home, John must come to grips with the fact that Savannah, now married, is still his true love and face the hardest decision of his life.
