FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL

As we begin the 225th year at Buckingham Friends School, and on behalf of the students, the faculty, and the staff, I extend heartfelt appreciation to everyone who gave so generously to BFS last year. Your support and participation had a meaningful impact on all that we valued, pursued, and accomplished as a community over the last 12 months. In this year’s Annual Report, we both celebrate our rich history, and look forward to realizing our plans for BFS’s future. When reflecting upon my own education, I recall salient moments that were transformative – each made possible by thoughtful teachers, coaches, and mentors. You also probably remember those occasions when someone took the time to help you to find your way, and they may be moments that you will never forget. An education at Buckingham Friends School is made up of hundreds of these special moments, and our children will, like you, hold them dear for the rest of their lives. You, our donors and valued members of the BFS community, made these moments and the quality of our programs possible. Yes, tuition pays 82% percent of a child’s education, but our donors help pay for the rest. During the 2018-2019 year, 11% percent of BFS’s operating budget came from the annual giving of our community. This means that 11% percent of faculty salaries, program costs, financial aid, campus upkeep, and scores of memorable moments were supported by donors like you. In addition to these annual gifts, special gifts and gifts to endowment help BFS expand its current programs and facilities, ultimately contributing to the long-term stability of the School. This extraordinary support is what makes each year at BFS a success, and the 2018-2019 school year was no exception. As you flip through the pages of this publication, you will be introduced to our new core values statements – what we stand for – while reading testimonials and seeing some of the highlights of the past year. We hope that this report reminds you of your own BFS moments, and demonstrates the deep impact of your generosity. Every single day, I see how many people, regardless of their affiliation with BFS, care deeply about this special school and everything we stand for. Thank you for being a member of our engaged learning community, and for all you do to support BFS. Gratefully yours,

Paul Lindenmaier Head of School

ANNUAL REPORT | 1

The final days of the 2018-2019 academic year were filled with great joy, gratitude, and anticipation! Alumni and Eighth Grade parents, Alison Mitchell ’81 and Andrew Garret ’82, addressed the soon-to-be graduates during the traditional Brick Ceremony held on June 4, 2019. Reflecting upon their years at BFS, both guest speakers talked about having a meaningful experience as a student at a school – where individuality is supported and community is celebrated – and the parallel of providing that gift to their own children while experiencing the BFS spirit as a parent. Students were then presented with their personalized brick by Head of School, Paul Lindenmaier and Head of School for the Day, Henry Liddell ’22. Their bricks can now be seen at the front of the school, making their “mark” permanent on campus.

BUCKINGHAM FRIENDS SCHOOL

On the morning of graduation, the community gathered for Meeting for Worship, recalling the year and the overall tone of unity. Following this most central experience of school life, Head of School Paul Lindenmaier took the opportunity to express gratitude to the community during the annual End-of-Year Assembly. With many raucous cheers, clapping, and smiles (and some tears), parent volunteers, faculty, and staff were recognized and thanked for their commitment, service, and dedication to BFS. As the sun began to set, the 2019 graduating class photo was taken in front of the main building before the community gathered once again to recognize and celebrate the seventeen Eighth Grade class graduates in Buckingham Monthly Meeting’s Meetinghouse, formally concluding their time at the school and Buckingham Friends School’s 224th year. Every graduate was individually recognized by a member of the faculty and presented with their diploma. Each Eighth Grader shared their own heartfelt reflections and humorous anecdotes about their experiences at the school. Director of Admissions Melissa Clayton delivered a moving speech filled with personal memories and words of wisdom for the graduates and all attendees to consider. These bright and talented individuals have gone on to attend a variety of independent and public schools including Abington Friends School, Delaware Valley Friends, George School, Germantown Academy, LaSalle College High School, Palisades, Pennington School and Berkeley Carroll School in NY.

What does it mean to be a BFS alum in the best sense? To me, it means so much but especially to be engaged in the world - to use our voices to make things a little better - whether that is in government or charities or other work that is about something more than ourselves. To care about what happens not just to those you know and love, but to the stranger you will never meet or the creatures you’ll never lay eyes upon. And to find reward in that.” –ALISON MITCHELL ’81, Parent

The students, parents, faculty, and alumni are the life blood of this great school. This fall, you will have a fresh canvas, but the next four years are going to go fast so make the most of it – you have an opportunity to change the world.” –ANDREW GARRETT ’82, Parent

We are the caretakers of our environment. We do not own the land we walk on, the sky is not solely for us to gaze upon, it is for all of life to enjoy. Everyone shares its resources, and as we take from it, we must also give back. It is our eternal responsibility to give service to the place we call home. I do this by cleaning up my local canal, and by trying not to use plastic. The environment has always been something I’ve been concerned about, and I’m so glad BFS takes strides to educate us on how to help care for the world we all reside on.

ENDOWMENT GIFTS

JAMES IDEN SMITH FUND

Buckingham Friends School invests its endowment funds with Friends Fiduciary, whose practices are in unity with Friend’s views on peace, social justice and the environment. The value of the Buckingham Friends School endowment was $5,250,100.00 as of June 30, 2019.

Established in 1998, this fund provides financial aid to a Quaker student each year based upon merit, and secondarily, financial need. Applicants are considered based upon recommendations from the Clerk of their Monthly Meeting and other Friends who know the student.

Endowment Funds provide long-lasting financial security and stability for the school. Contributions are permanently invested, the principal of these funds remain intact, and the School draws from the interest and dividends to support donor – directed causes. We gratefully acknowledge the following contributions that will create a perpetual source of income and an enduring gift to Buckingham Friends School.
