Buckingham Friends School Annual Report 2023-24

ANNUAL REPORT 2023-24

FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear members of the Buckingham Friends School community,

Each year as we prepare the Annual Report, my reflections center on innumerable experiences of our students, accomplishments of talented teachers, stewardship of our

trustees, engagement of parents and families, and the generosity of the extended BFS community. This report presents the story of all of those gifts, each deeply valued and appreciated, and I extend heartfelt appreciation to all who gave so generously.

Giving to BFS came from all directions. Annual Fund gifts provided program support, funded new materials and books, and helped us to increase faculty salaries. Proceeds of the Auction enhanced financial aid while benefiting the entire community. Significant giving through Pennsylvania’s EITC program boosted financial aid and the operating budget. Special gifts added to the JEM Fund, new athletic equipment, and much more. Every gift, each an expression of care and support, and the participation of so many members of the BFS community had an important impact on all that we valued, pursued, and accomplished.

This year, though, it’s impossible to overlook the extensive physical changes that amounted to a collectively envisioned, mission-guided renewal of our campus that positions the School for a vibrant and purposeful future while honoring the spirit and character that have been hallmarks of BFS for 230 years. Thoughtful renovations of the Main Building have improved teaching and learning in the Upper and Middle Schools and provide increased connections between classes in each division. They also have created two new expanded learning commons and smaller spaces for collaborative work and

MISSION

Buckingham Friends School honors the Light within each person, inspires scholarship and spiritual community, and instills the value of caring for others and our world.

student support. A new properly sized Gymnasium is resplendent with natural wood and ample windows that are beautiful without being extravagant. The new Science Building moves the program from a box in a building to a destination nestled in the woods, where students have greater access to the natural world on our 44acre, wooded campus. A Community Connector building creates a bridge from the Arts Building to the Gymnasium and improves accessibility. Two new playgrounds and a bus canopy/pickup area greatly improve the student experience.

It’s extraordinary for a school as small as BFS to undergo this much capital improvement in so little time. Incredibly, all of the improvements—all of the future-focused, curricula-centered transformations—have been accomplished without using tuition dollars or money from our modest endowment. On behalf of the

entire BFS community, I extend heartfelt thanks for the breadth of vision and the depth of giving provided by so many community members.

One project, one final phase of our vision for BFS’s campus, lies before us. This year, we will harness the momentum we have experienced and continue to move forward regarding the renovation and expansion of the Arts Building. In doing so, we will further improve opportunities for students to express their originality, develop creative abilities, integrate more fully with other subjects, learn how the arts inspire and enrich our lives, and enhance their capacity to reflect our world and the human experience. I am pleased to share with you the enclosed booklet presenting the vision and plans, which are aligned with the campus plan we created as a community in 2020, and refined during an engaging process with our faculty, community members, and architects.

It is beyond evident to me that people, regardless of their affiliation with BFS, care deeply about this special school and everything we stand for. Thank you for your generosity and support of Buckingham Friends School.

Gratefully yours,

FROM THE SUPER SEVEN TO THE FANTASTIC FIFTEEN…

Faculty, family, and friends celebrated the graduating Class of 2024 in the historic Buckingham Friends Meetinghouse on the evening of June 6. Sentiments of gratitude were shared, performances as unique as each child were displayed, and the sense of wholeness was ever-present in the room. This

year’s selected speaker, English teacher Jack Knetemann, spoke about the many strengths and accomplishments the graduates possess as individuals and as a group with stories showing how these qualities enriched their personal BFS experiences as well as the whole community. There were themes of embracing change,

having courage, and remaining focused on personal priorities as Jack reminded the graduates to “stay gold.” Following personal testimony about each student delivered by the dedicated faculty, the BFS Class of 2024 received their diplomas and made their final address to all in attendance with the traditional “As We Leave This Friendly Place.”

Congratulations to the BFS Class of 2024!

We are proud to share this list of secondary schools that our most recent graduates have chosen to build upon their BFS education: George School, The Pennington School, Solebury School, The Hun School, and Holicong Middle School.

THE FRIENDS COLLABORATIVE

Through our membership with the Friends Collaborative, EITC program participants will enjoy easier access to enrollment and benefit from the Collaborative’s support team, streamlining this process for you to receive tax credits while supporting financial assistance for BFS students!

Qualifying individuals and businesses have the opportunity to receive tax credits for supporting financial assistance for BFS students. Individuals and businesses in Pennsylvania can participate in the Friends Collaborative by making a minimum contribution of $3,000 per year for two consecutive years to support tuition assistance at BFS and fellow Quaker schools. In turn, participants receive a PA state tax credit for 90% of their contribution amount. As an example, a $10,000 Friends Collaborative gift to support tuition assistance has a net cost of just $1,000 to the donor – making this truly a win-win for donors and BFS! BFS receives at least 90% of every contribution from BFS donors, and the remainder supports scholarships at other Quaker schools in our area.

ENDOWMENT GIFTS

Buckingham Friends School invests its endowment funds with Friends Fiduciary, whose practices are in unity with Friend’s views on peace, social justice and the environment. The value of Buckingham Friends School endowment was $6,352,675 as of June 30, 2024.

Endowment Funds provide long-lasting financial security and stability for the School. Contributions are permanently invested, the principal of these funds remain intact, and the School draws from the interest and dividends to support donor-directed causes.

The following details the variety of endowed funds of BFS and we gratefully acknowledge those who have contributed to these funds over the course of the year. This support will create a perpetual source of income and an enduring gift to Buckingham Friends School.

General Endowment Fund

The revenue generated from these investments is used throughout the school year, if and as needed.

Elizabeth Todd Haines Fund

Betty Haines was a beloved teacher at BFS from 1937 to 1966 who touched many young lives. To honor her teaching excellence, a BFS alumnus established this fund in her honor in 2004. Proceeds are used for financial aid and scholarships.

Faculty Enrichment Endowment Fund

This endowment provides necessary funds for advanced study, seminars, workshops, and trainings for the ongoing professional development of BFS Faculty.

Raymond and Elizabeth Bell

Financial Aid Endowment for Quaker Children

This fund provides financial assistance to qualified Quaker children based on financial need and is awarded at the school’s discretion.

Drew Augenblick

Gordon G. and Allaire Wallace Fund

The Wallace Family established this fund in 2001 in memory of Gordon and Allaire, mother and sister of the Wallace brothers, all BFS ‘60s graduates. The fund augments the school’s existing scholarship fund.

Scott Wallace ‘65

Grandparents Scholarship Fund

Established through a bequest from an anonymous donor, this fund provides emergency tuition aid for families encountering unexpected financial difficulties during the course of the year.

James Iden Smith Quaker Financial Aid Award

Established in 1998, the purpose of this fund is to provide financial aid to Quaker students each year based upon merit. Financial need is considered on a secondary basis. Applicants are considered based upon recommendations from the Clerk of their Monthly Meeting and other Friends who know the student.

Bethann Morgan ‘77

Jonny Baldwin Fund

A scholarship is awarded each year to a student who applies for financial aid.

Peter Steward ’52 Fund

A scholarship is awarded each year to a student who applies for financial aid in memory of this alumna.

Sarah Mook Fund

Sarah was a BFS 3rd grader when she died of a heart condition that had gone undetected from birth. A scholarship fund was named in her honor to help make BFS affordable to a broad spectrum of students and to memorialize her brief life.

Scott Family Fund for Friends Education

Established in 2019, this endowed fund provides financial aid assistance annually to enrolled BFS students whose families have demonstrated and verified need for tuition assistance and who are members of the Religious Society of Friends. Extra consideration is extended to families who are members of Buckingham Monthly Meeting.

SNOWFLAKE FESTIVAL

This annual event serves as a great opportunity for community building and, in 2023, raised $7,444 to benefit the operating budget of Buckingham Friends School. We would like to acknowledge and thank the following volunteer leaders for making this possible:
