Amelia & Tom "Being at my parent's house made the day even more special..." Two creative hearts style the perfect at-home wedding with a clear roof marquee and Moroccan chill-out lounge

T

om and I met on Tinder. We both enjoy travelling and hiking! He proposed on my birthday in a Moroccan restaurant in Cambridge. It was very romantic and yes, he went down on one knee! Personally I found the planning of our wedding rather easy. My very organised mum wanted to be very much involved! All our suppliers were easy to work with too. I decided to use local suppliers as much as possible and most of them came through recommendations. I had always wanted to make the most of my parent’s garden so we had a clear roof marquee and a Moroccan chill out area. Being at my parents house made the day even more special and personal. I tried on nearly twenty dresses before

choosing ‘the one’! I chose a 70’s inspired Sassi Holford dress called ‘Constance’ which was in the new collection at the time. Tom wore a navy Ted Baker suit with a classic green cravat. My bridesmaids wore a similar lace to my dress in a pretty, bright, coral colour with blush shoes. I wanted to keep our style relaxed so I chose the amazing Quintessentially Wild; a local business with a unique style of floristry I’d never seen before. The flowers really made the day incredible. We chose a semi naked cake with dark fruits from the Wistow Cafe. It was so delicious! I designed our stationery of course and paired it up as favours! Little rustic frames with a black and white photo of each guest. It took forever for 171 day guests but they did make for a

great talking point. My day began with a glass of Buck’s Fizz. I’d recommend anyone to pace themselves on the alcohol front! My maid of honour stayed with me the night before and she was amazing at calming me down. She played the ‘Mama Mia’ soundtrack on repeat! My dad seeing me in my dress was one of the most memorable moments of the day. That and walking down the aisle to meet Tom and of course our Rod Stewart tribute act! For our reception we wanted our food and drink choices to be informal and relaxed. There was lots of Two Birds gin. And I mean lots! The bar staff had to restock halfway through the night. We served plenty of wine too. Tom and I chose mixed paella as our main course with stuffed peppers, breads and salads. The atmosphere was quite informal, just how we wanted it and the funniest part of the whole day was definitely the speeches. Tom and I kicked off the evening, dancing to ‘Shipping Up To Boston’ by Dropkick Murphys. After our wonderful day we left to honeymoon in Antibes.

Buckinghams Wedding Magazine Page 19

ow did you two meet? We met on a night out in Derby town. I was out with my work friends and Ben was out with his friends. How long have you been together? 9 years. How did he pop the question? Ben is very good at surprises. He had my engagement ring for quite a while before he proposed. He’d bought it from ‘Veronicas’, a shop in Kefalonia, Greece. I had seen it whilst we were on holiday there one year and said “wow that’s so beautiful and different”. He agreed and sneakily got it whilst his family and I were having a drink at a bar. He told me he was going to the cash point! In December 2011 he took me to Belgium, to the Christmas Markets, as a surprise and an early Christmas present. That’s where he proposed. What was your favourite moment from the wedding? All of it! We had an amazing day and enjoyed every moment. How would you describe your overall wedding experience? Overwhelming, exciting and amazing. Everything we wanted it to be. What advice would you offer to other couples planning a wedding? Get everything sorted from the minute you start planning. Don’t leave everything until the last minute and

then you will enjoy it. The closer you get to the day an item on your initial ‘to do’ list will suddenly develop its very own ‘to do’ list; things you haven’t even thought of! Get a book to keep everything together…your lists upon lists! Also Post-it notes with guest names on and A4 paper for individual tables; brilliant when creating your table plan until you’ve got everybody, and every table in just the right place. Tell us about your dress. Where did you find it, how did you choose it, how did you know it was the one? It was the first one I tried on with my mum at Beau Belles in Borrowash, who were brilliant by the way. I actually saw a poster in the shop of what I wanted and they had it in! I wanted an ivory silk dress with no tulle or lace but diamanté detail. I was intrigued as to what Ben would expect me to wear so I asked him to send me a picture of what he thought. It was scary how similar my wedding dress was to what he sent. It made me feel great though and I looked forward to him seeing it. How was your experience with your photographer on your wedding day? I can honestly say Elen Studio Photography were absolutely brilliant. From the minute we met to now, Elena and her husband have been so supportive and lovely throughout the whole wedding process. The photos are amazing and overwhelming. Elena sent us one to look at and I couldn’t believe it was us! The venue was beautiful and the picture she sent was exactly what I wanted and envisaged before we got married. To see it for real with me in my wedding dress and Ben in his suit was quite emotional. I was so happy. Did you have an engagement session? Would you recommend having an engagement photo shoot to other couples? Yes yes yes! We had ours at our wedding venue which gave Elena some good ideas for the day and was so much fun. We got dressed up and had some beautiful photos taken, one of which we used within our guest signing picture frame for the wedding day. We love to hear about suppliers you love. Who did you have in your wedding team? Sophie and Kate from Imagine Invites and Events were amazing and created our invites, dressed our venue and helped conduct the day so everything ran smoothly. They have been brilliant and so supportive and as you can see from the photos the venue dressing looked beautiful and exactly what I wanted. Flowers were by Jo from Jo Beth Floral Design and they were stunning! Again, an amazing job and a lovely lady who did everything exactly how we wanted. Catherine and Hannah from The Red Olive Catering Company were brilliant. The food was outstanding and the service on the day was incredible.

Yolande, Natalie, Fliss, Rebecca and the team at Harvey Luke Hair. I couldn’t have asked for anything better. Getting ready at the salon was so much fun. We took breakfast and had a couple of drinks. We were ready at the time I’d requested. I will definitely continue to get my hair and beauty treatments done there. The prices were reasonable and the results were amazing. We booked our transport from Cupid Carriages, who were brilliant. From booking to getting to the venue, it was simple and on time. The drivers were great and made everyone feel relaxed. It was a fun journey. I found my wedding dress at Beau Belles. They stocked exactly what I wanted. The dress fitted beautifully and they helped get everything sorted on time. The women are lovely and made me feel comfortable too. What food did you choose for your reception? We had canapés, BBQ food and a trio of desserts by The Red Olive Company. They also prepared our evening food which was antipasti. What was the first song you danced to as husband and wife? Adore by Jasmine Thompson. Her voice is beautiful. What advice would you give to other couples? Take a walk with your husband away from everyone and just look at everything. See everyone from a distance enjoying your day. It’s a great feeling and makes it all feel real. Ben and I walked on our own from the ceremony venue to the marquee. It was lovely watching everyone and taking in how beautiful the day was, the venue and our guests.

Birdy - A glamorously fitted and semi sheer bustier is artistically decorated with intricate embroidery in magenta, kingfisher and green, all the shades least expected to be found on a bridal gown. Even more captivating is the way the intertwining branches, climbing roses and hummingbirds dance around the hemline of soft draping silk tulle. A couture bridal gown in every sense of the word.

The French Riviera meets the Quintessential English Rose for Buckinghams’ cover shoot at Hodsock Priory, featuring three magnificent gowns by Joanna Leigh Couture.

first met Joanna Leigh Couture at our wedding show at Belvoir Castle in the Autumn of 2017. Her designs are sensational and I knew we’d definitely want to work with her on a photoshoot. I called her after the show and asked if she would be interested. She said yes and we set about discussing dresses. Jo sent over detail shots of several gowns she was working on. The first was 'Florence' - or 3D Silk as we were affectionately calling her at the

time. After my initial gasp, my mind’s eye wandered instantly to the beautiful gardens at Hodsock Priory. We just had to shoot this dress at that location. 'Little Bow' followed along with immediate inspiration to pair her with a sharp suited Riviera styled groom. Last, but by no means least, 'Birdy'. A breathtaking humming bird gown so beautiful it is beyond words. So who would we ask to go behind the camera? Myself and Mandy Carter

Buckinghams Wedding Magazine Page 25

at Dottie Photography had been chatting for nearly a year about working together on a project and I had a feeling this would be the perfect one. When I showed Mandy the dresses and the venue, she was on board. Our backdrop was Hodsock Priory, the beautiful country house in Blyth, Nottinghamshire, once visited by Henry VIII in 1541. With the impressive Tudor Gatehouse, the Panelled Hall ceremony room, glamorous chandeliers and the

‘Florence’ embraces lavish textures, exquisite embroidery and the rustle of silk taffeta. A hand pleated silk bodice accentuates the waistline. Chiffon petals and floral detail delicately flutter revealing rich pearl and crystal adornments. The sheer, voluminous sleeves and veiled shoulders create a dramatic sense of romance as the floral embellishments softly trail away from the train.

stunning gardens with its own lake, we were spoilt for photo opportunities. I’d been praying for a dry day and although it was really overcast when we arrived, we took the risk and set up our first scene in the gardens. I’d been speaking to George Buchanan, owner of Hodsock, about what was in bloom and when. I wanted to create an al fresco double depth top table with the front table doubling as a dessert table with cake centrepiece. A waterfall of fabric was to froth onto the grass below it. I invited beautiful harpist, Soraya Vermuelen, to complete our scene. Mandy had recently launched 'Dottie Events & Hire,' her new marquee company. This was a great opportunity to delve into her extensive stock of hire items and she had the very pieces I was

Buckinghams Wedding Magazine Page 28

hoping for - gold cutlery, cut crystal and lots of candle sticks! We borrowed gold edged chargers and votives from our friends at Nerissa Eve Weddings in Market Harborough. Millie Stone UK designed our beautiful name cards for the table and the lovely ladies from Nuptia, set about adding sashes to our ceremony chairs and draping the backdrop, kindly assisted by Anna Straw. For cakes and favours I went straight to Lorien Storey from Storeybook Cakes. I haven’t known Lorien for long but she’s already in my little black book of go-to cake designers. Her attention to detail is epic and I was confident she’d totally smash it, and she did. Leading up to the shoot, Lorien sent me teaser shots of the cakes and favours she was working on. From the first photo I knew she'd taken what was in my head and turned it into sweet reality. When Marianne Slater at Frances & Rose checked her schedule and said she was available, we knew we were on to something special. Marianne’s combination of home grown ‘just foraged’ flowers were perfect for the table setting and bouquets. With Adele Coxon MUA and Kirby Blythe Hair on beauty, the stage was set. Our models, Sadie Straw and Josh Oxley Adams made the perfect couple. We styled Josh in a selection of suits from Christopher Scotney Mens Hire in Leicester. For gloves, there’s really only once place to go if you’re looking for the best. I approached the fabulous Cornelia James. I always love the moment their little packet of gloves arrives at my office.

‘Little Bow’ was designed especially for the Hodsock Priory shoot and inspired by a single pair of silk retro styled gloves which represent elegance in its simplest form. Appropriately named, it displays a delicate bow positioned in the centre of a clean cut and sensual bust line without interrupting the sophisticated décolletage.

Little Bow

Little Bow When creating timeless pieces Joanna introduces delicate, silk covered button and loops to fasten her gowns and nothing would be more complementary to a deep and contoured back as this gown. Light in weight and fitted to perfection to celebrate the feminine figure, created in luxurious, pure silk fading jacquard paying tribute to the glamorous and iconic years of Hollywood’s silver screen.

After several hours, scene one was set. The gardens burst into petal and bloom right on cue and the rain swept over us very briefly and promptly disappeared. Thank you to everyone involved in this project, especially to Hodsock Priory for looking after us. To Florence, Birdy and Little Bow - we love you.

The visionary genius creating ethereal gowns that dance with your very soul.

David Fielden began his creative life as a choreographer so it’s no surprise his designs are pure theatre. Each gown tells her own story and one could be forgiven for believing his gowns choose the woman, rather than the other way around. Such is the intimacy between a bride and her David Fielden dress. But stepping away from the leading ladies for a moment, we go backstage to discover the personal life of their creator. Likes, hates and the colour of Elephant's Breath.

t’s taken more than two years for us to get this interview. “He hates being interviewed” we were told. But when you admire legendary designer David Fielden as much as we do, we weren’t going to give up that easily. We’re incredibly grateful to dear Walter who helped us nag him, and of course to the man himself. It gives us great pleasure to include David in our ‘Designer Life’ series, where he talks exclusively to Buckinghams about his private life and the man behind the incredible label that bears his name.

What do you love least about running your business? Making the financial side balance with the creative. What do you love most? Working with young creative people. What’s the dream for your business? That it can continue as a creative force If you could go back to day one of your business what, if anything, would you do differently? Nothing Does the responsibility of your business ever scare you? Yes! How do you start your day? Press-ups What do you eat for breakfast? Nutty muesli with extra almonds Are you a morning or night person? Morning What do you do to unwind? I go to the theatre and I like to listen to new exciting music.

in their abilities to create your dream decorations. Don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions. Are they familiar with your reception and ceremony venue? Have they worked there before? Can you make changes to your order if you have another idea later on? What’s the cut-off date for changes? Bring pictures of flowers and arrangements that you like; magazine clippings, swatches, photos or website links. Try to have a good idea of the style, shape and types of flowers that will look perfect with your gown and bridesmaids' dresses and add to the style of your day. Have a list of all the flowers and decorations you’d like for the ceremony and at the reception venue. A good Buckinghams Wedding Magazine Page 38

ne of the most crucial decisions you’ll make when planning your big day is your choice of florist. It’s essential to feel confident your florist completely understands your vision. But how to choose the right florist? Where on earth do you start? Everybody likes flowers but maybe have little idea on varieties, seasons and names. Start looking for florists as soon as you’ve decided on your venue. Good florists get booked up very quickly. At your first visit with a florist it’s essential you ask to see a portfolio of their previous wedding work. It should be up to date and you should love it. Most importantly you should feel confident

Everything’s fancy with

Nancy

“Paint it the colour of elephant’s breath”.

ancy Lancaster (nee Perkins) was born into a wealthy American family on September 10th, 1897. During her lifetime she was married three times. It was her second marriage to Ronald Tree that first brought her to Kelmarsh Hall in 1928. The couple rented the fine Georgian mansion until 1933 during which time she made her mark. The story goes that the hand-painted wallpaper in the Chinese room was originally hung in a house many miles away but when Nancy saw it, she wanted it, purchased it and had it delivered to Kelmarsh. Set amongst 3000 acres of Northamptonshire pasture and woodland and close to the border of Leicestershire, Nancy created the perfect home for entertaining, both inside and out. A reputable gardener she also designed the stunning gardens including

the sunken garden where she hosted fine cocktail parties. Nancy’s inimitable style gave her the reputation of ‘having the finest taste of almost anyone in the world’. Indeed as notable style-maker of her time it was Nancy who set the bar for creating the perfect English country house style. In 1933 Nancy and Robert moved to Ditchley Park but the marriage ended in divorce in 1947. A year later in 1948 Nancy returned to Kelmarsh Hall having married its owner, Lieutenant Colonel Lancaster. Once again Nancy was back at her beloved Kelmarsh Hall and by now was partner in the revered interior design company, Colefax & Fowler. Noted for her instruction to a decorator to ‘paint it the colour of elephant’s breath’, Nancy Lancaster is the stylish hand behind the design at Kelmarsh Hall as seen today. It is with thanks to her that Kelmarsh can offer a wonderful Buckinghams Wedding Magazine Page 43

backdrop for weddings, whatever the season. “Kelmarsh Hall offers a romance and grace that will colour every aspect of your wedding day. The tranquil seclusion and exclusive use policy guarantees wedding parties the freedom to enjoy Kelmarsh Hall as if it were their own.” Guests are treated to a magnificent welcome in the Great Hall. With coral toned walls, a breathtaking gilt lantern and the entire space flooded with natural light, this double height room offers the grandest, yet somehow, most intimate, of welcomes to your wedding guests. Whether you opt for roaring fires in the winter or drinks on the lawn in the summer this ‘heart of the home’ room guarantees a ‘wow’ your guests will not easily forget. The Yellow Room is a haven away from the hustle and bustle. A chance

to reflect on the day and take stock. Prepare for your walk down the aisle in this room with comfy sofa, dressing table and mirror. Catch your breath for a moment’s private time away from your guests or simply enjoy the views whilst you step into your bridal gown. Saying ‘I Do’ in the Saloon means stepping into the grandeur of yesteryear. The high Georgian ceiling, striking cornicing and stunning view that stretches out across the garden and grounds to the lake below, via the floor to ceiling windows, promises to make the most important moment of your big day extra special. The Ballroom was designed for partying and to this day it is still holding true to its original purpose. Ladies of the house would host stunning parties and soirées in this room. It is only fitting then that families of today who choose Kelmarsh Hall for their special occasions are keeping the party atmosphere alive. Dine on fine food and toast your health, wealth and happiness in this stunning panelled room. After dinner the room is transformed into the perfect place for dancing the night away. The gardens at Kelmarsh Hall offer the perfect backdrop for your wedding photographs and a delightful location to entertain your guests. Host an elegant cocktail party al fresco or choose to lead your guests through the walled garden. You’ll find the outside space at Kelmarsh Hall as wonderful as the indoors. With their famous white cows and fine view overlooking the church, you could be forgiven for thinking you’ve somehow been transported straight into a painting by Constable. ‘Idyllic’ is a word that easily comes to mind when you visit Kelmarsh and it’s one of the reasons we are proud to add this truly fabulous venue to our portfolio. We have fallen in love with everything

this venue has to offer today’s bride and groom and we just know, when you visit, you’ll love Kelmarsh too. Book a private viewing of this superb venue and meet the wedding team who love the house as much as the family who have lived here for generations. Make Kelmarsh Hall your home for the day. We’re fairly certain Nancy would raise a glass to that. In Focus:

Neil Priestley at One Fine Day Productions

Neil Priestley, owner of One Fine Day Productions, specialises in producing contemporary wedding films.

I

’ve always been a huge movie fan. I grew up in the 80’s loving films such as ‘The Goonies’ and ‘Star Wars’. My interest in how films were made meant it wasn’t long before I was making films of my own. Soon friends and family would ask if I could film their wedding day. At first I found filming a live event quite stressful, (you only have one take to get it right) but I loved capturing and retelling the day and found I was quite good at it. I got a real buzz from hearing how everyone

loved my films. I went on to study Media Production at Lincoln University. I loved every second of it and, well, here I am. I firmly believe there is nothing like reliving your wedding day in film long after you’re back from your honeymoon. There’s so much you miss when you’re getting ready and chatting with friends. A video captures not only the moving images but the sounds of your day and in some instances, the voices of loved ones. It’s often the sound of that one voice, seeing how they moved and those

unique gestures, that we miss long after they’re gone. Video captures so much and it’s something to keep for generations to come. I truly believe having a wedding video is essential and social media makes sharing your film with friends and family so easy. This truly is the era of video. People often ask what is unique about my work. I guess the simple answer is, me. If two videographers shoot the exact same wedding, the videos would be completely different in terms of the shots, use of slow motion, colour grading, music and the all important edit. My style is modern, cinematic, discreet and ‘fly-on-the-wall’. I offer a natural re-telling of your wedding day story, capturing those unposed, candid shots in an unobtrusive manner. If you’re looking for peace of mind and the discreet and highly professional service with creative flare that I have become known for, then do give me a call and let’s talk about your special day.
