THE BUCKLEY SCHOOL 2018–19 ANNUAL REPORT ON PHILANTHROPY
1
2
THE BUCKLEY SCHOOL MISSION The Buckley School is a dynamic, nurturing learning community committed to equity and inclusion. Our innovative teachers and challenging programs inspire creativity, courage, and collaboration. By promoting a balanced development of mind, body, and character, we encourage each student to find joy and meaning in life and make an impact in the world.
THE BUCKLEY SCHOOL HISTORY The Buckley School, founded in 1933 by Isabelle Buckley, is the oldest K–12 independent co-educational day school in Los Angeles. Dr. Buckley developed the 4-Fold Plan of Education with equal emphasis on Academics, the Arts, Athletics, and Moral Education. These four pillars remain the foundation of our school and are continually updated to reflect current research in teaching, brain science, diversity, and a globalized world. 4

The Buckley School gratefully acknowledges all of our donors. Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of this report. If you uncover an error, please accept our sincerest apologies and contact Advancement Database Manager Isaac Moore at (818) 461-6705, so that we can correct our records. The fiscal year covered in this Annual Report on Philanthropy is August 1, 2018 through July 31, 2019.
FROM THE HEAD Someone once said that the key to happiness is gratitude. Every day, I am grateful to lead this incredible community and every day I have an opportunity to thank the people who make Buckley a special place. That brings me great joy. I am extremely grateful for our parents who are actively engaged in their children’s education, supporting and encouraging them and communicating regularly with their teachers about their children’s learning and growth. I am grateful for our caring and talented faculty who know our students and who challenge and inspire them—teachers who peak our students’ curiosity and creativity and transform learning into energizing and empowering experiences. I deeply appreciate all that our administrative and professional staff do to go above and beyond— taking care of the support functions so teachers and students can focus on teaching and learning. I am thankful to work with Buckley’s Board of Trustees. Trustees put in countless hours to ensure that Buckley thrives—not only for today’s students, but for generations of students to come. I am grateful to our students who put smiles on my face. When I see our students discovering, creating and making connections, I know that they will make the world a better place. Our alumni make me proud as they become leaders in their professions and find ways to make a difference in their communities. Finally, I am grateful for the skill with which Interim Head of School Andrew Wooden guided The Buckley School last year. His leadership undergirded the accomplishments and progress celebrated throughout this Annual Report. William Arthur Ward said, “Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.” To all of the donors and volunteers listed in this publication, thank you from the bottom of my heart for the positive impact that you have on our students! With gratitude,
Alona Scott Head of School

FROM THE BOARD CHAIR Each year the biggest accomplishment for The Buckley School is the exceptional education it provides for its students. Last year, 830 students were challenged and nurtured to find their passions and reach their full potential. Seventy-six students graduated, prepared for college and beyond. For the board of trustees, our biggest accomplishment was hiring Alona Scott as head of school, after a comprehensive national search. Alona’s wealth of experience is already evident, and we are confident that under her leadership the school will remain a leader in independent school education. We also want to acknowledge and thank Andrew Wooden for serving as Interim Head of School for 2018–19. His steady leadership made a positive impact on Buckley and ensured a smooth transition for Alona. In addition to hiring the head of school, the board of trustees is responsible for ensuring that the school has the financial resources it needs to fulfill its mission not just today, but for generations to come. As a board we spend more time on the school’s finances than on any other area. Our rigorous budget process challenges the administration of the school to cut costs when appropriate, justify increases to existing programs, and fund new initiatives. We do bench marking and financial modeling. We look at demographics that might impact our applicant pool. We address issues such as deferred maintenance, keeping faculty salaries competitive, and having sufficient reserves. On the revenue side, we set tuition each year based upon the budget that we need to be an excellent school, not simply a good school. As we have worked to balance the budget, it has become increasingly clear that we must strengthen our philanthropic support through the Annual Fund. A strong Annual Fund ensures we have the resources to continually innovate, to take existing programs from good to great, to provide robust financial aid, and to invest in faculty professional growth and development. Many are making Buckley a philanthropic priority (THANK YOU!!!), by not only giving, but by giving generously. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, and more importantly our students, I want to express our deepest appreciation to everyone who is listed in this annual report for their investment in Buckley and for sharing our belief that education is the greatest gift of lasting significance that can be given to our children. You truly make a difference. As we approach the 2020 year, let’s commit individually and as a community to build a stronger culture of philanthropy by growing the Buckley Annual Fund. Our 2019–20 Annual Fund theme says it all: we are BETTER TOGETHER! Sincerely,
Valeria Rico-Nikolov Chair, Board of Trustees

2018–19 ENDOWMENT FUNDS The general endowment at the Buckley School is a significant source of support for the school and its mission. A gift to the endowment secures Buckley’s future and supports investments in the school’s infrastructure, faculty and professional development, student-centered programs and technology, and, importantly, financial aid for new and continuing students.

SENIOR CLASS LEGACY FUND DONORS Each year, parents are asked to support the Senior Class Legacy Fund to honor their graduating senior, and to support the general endowment at Buckley. Founded in 2006, the Senior Class Legacy Fund continues to grow as alumni give in honor of their class year and as subsequent classes establish their own legacy funds. The combined impact for future generations of Buckley students will be tremendous.
The Class of 2019 set an ambitious goal to raise $119,000 for the 2018–19 school year. Under Bridget Smith’s leadership, families of our seniors raised over $120,000 in support of faculty and staff professional development.

PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION What a great year it was for the Parents’ Association! President Caroline Macaulay kicked off the year by welcoming the sun at the Back to School Bash. Spirits were high on Gilley Field as we ushered in a new start to the school year with great food, entertainment, and of course Buckley’s finest bakers at the annual Bake-Off competition. The year continued with the beloved Party Book event series, offering a range of parties and gatherings including fitness and home decor classes, a memorable night at SoHo House, a baking class with Gesine Prado of Baked in Vermont, and the PA Poker Night All in for Buckley. Party Book brought together students, parents, guardians, alumni, and friends from all three divisions and a wide range of decades to build community while supporting Buckley. In February the PA gave way to the Boutique, which welcomed over 30 vendors to the Mulholland Tennis Club for a fun day of shopping and togetherness. The PA closed out the year with the Boldly Go Fair at the Santa Monica Pier. It was an epic evening on the edge of the ocean featuring the annual silent auction, great food, the fun adult lounge, and of course unlimited rides for everyone brave enough to give it a try. In addition to these wonderful events, the PA also had a record breaking year with the Nearly New Uniform sale, supported the Drama and Dance and Music Departments through Buckley Backstage, and supported teachers and staff throughout the year with a lot of teacher appreciation. The school community spreads far beyond the walls of campus to the parents and guardians whose time and effort make so much of what the PA does possible. Thank you to everyone who volunteered at an event or with a committee, as a room parent, purchased Nearly New Uniforms or Buckley merchandise, or attended a PA meeting-your support is what keeps it going!

THE STANSBURY SOCIETY:
PLANNED GIVING AT THE BUCKLEY SCHOOL Members of the Stansbury Society are a special group of generous alumni, parents, and friends who have chosen to remember The Buckley School in their estate plans. Leaving a legacy is vital to the future of The Buckley School, and, through their planning, members of the Stansbury Society are honoring the past while ensuring the Buckley experience is viable for the next generation of Griffins.
REMEMBERING DR. MARGARET MASON It can be said that the heart of the Buckley community lies within its dedicated teachers— and none more truly embodied the depth and soul of the Buckley commitment and what it meant to be an exceptional educator than Dr. Margaret Mack Mason, world languages department chair, truly embodied the depth and soul of the Buckley commitment and what it meant to be an exceptional educator. Buckley’s World Languages department thrived under the leadership of Dr. Mason for more than 20 years. Having arrived at Buckley in 1983, Dr. Mason’s presence was felt everywhere on campus. She taught French, Latin, English, Humanities and went on to work for the college counseling department. She even put in time on the weekends to help students with their college essays. “She did everything,” recalls current World Languages Department Chair Patrick Gomez, who also recalled that Dr. Mason was “super supportive as department chair.” As remembered by her former colleagues, Dr. Mason loved cats, collected cookbooks, and completed a crossword puzzle every day. Dr. Mason was “good to talk to,” and students loved her—in 2006, the graduating senior class dedicated their yearbook to her. Today Dr. Mason’s rich legacy lives on through her incredible bequest to Buckley. Through her generosity, the Dr. Margaret Mason Endowment Fund for Professional Development was established in 2019. Her gift, combined with the additional match from a handful of Buckley families, totals more than $1 million dollars for faculty and staff professional development, that will leave a lasting impact on generations of Buckley students to come.

THE BUCKLEY PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION FELLOWSHIP One of the most important factors for making good schools even better is to encourage good teachers to continue to work on their craft and to continually become better teachers. This would not be possible without The Buckley Parents’ Association Fellowship, which allows Buckley teachers to apply and receive funding for professional development opportunities across the globe. One recipient of the Parents’ Association Fellowship for the 2018–19 school year was English teacher, Maria O’Driscoll, who traveled to attend the ten-day Corrib Ireland Theater Tour summer course in July of 2019. With a background of teaching Performing Arts in London, Maria notes that attending the course helped her “to reconnect on a personal level, and also on a professional level, to [her] background in drama in theater.” At Buckley, Maria teaches 10th Grade English II (Regular and Honors), as well as 12th Grade AP English Literature. She is also a Faculty Advisor with fellow Buckley teacher Mitch Kohn for Buckley’s Literary Journal The Oxford Comma. Maria is also a qualified UCLA Mindfulness Teacher and runs a drop-in mindfulness center at Buckley. Among the many events scheduled, Maria attended performances each in Galway and Dublin that included private meetings with playwrights and other theater artists, as well as lectures on the cultural influence of Irish literature.
Aaron Island off Galway, Ireland (Dún Aonghasa Fort)
Maria noted the connection between the summer course and her ability to reinforce Buckley values in her classroom. Maria views “theater as a cathartic means to connect people and communities,” noting that “the plays that are part of this literary discovery connect to what we hold dear in the Buckley community: race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status and tolerance.” Attending Galway International Arts Festival. Maria notes that “the dome is created by the community of Galway and is cardboard.”

the Corrib Ireland Theater Tour was instrumental in providing her with the knowledge, tools and experience to continue to utilize this multi-field discipline design in her classroom.
On the set of The Unmanageable Sisters by Deidre Kinahan at The Abby Theatre in Dublin
When reflecting on her experience, Maria notes that “having the opportunity of see one to two performances a day, every single day, was incredible and meeting up and coming playwrights, and meeting producers, talking about theater, and talking about setting a stage was just wonderful.” And with her focus on helping students to understand cultures outside of their own, Maria comments that “intercultural relations involve, at a fundamental level, learning how to see oneself and the world through the eyes of another.”
Innovating teaching is limited only by our imaginations, and the imaginations of our teachers are enhanced when they know that there is support for their inspired ideas. The Parents’ Association Fellowship has a direct impact on the creativity of our instructors and the experiences of our 830 students.

WAYS TO GIVE Philanthropy—your gifts—is what turns a good school into a great school! The Buckley School is grateful for the long history of philanthropy and generosity of spirit that exists among members of our community. Financial support from parents and guardians, grandparents, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends provides exceptional opportunities and outstanding resources for our students and programs. Buckley’s continued excellence depends on regular support from generous members of the community. Every gift to our school—regardless of size—sends a strong message that we are committed to our students, their education, and the future of The Buckley School. There are several ways to make a taxdeductible donation to the school.
CASH, CHECK OR CREDIT CARD
MATCHING GIFTS
Contributions made by check, cash, or credit card are tax deductible in the year the donation is given. Please make checks payable to “The Buckley School.” To make a donation with your credit card, you can use our online donation form or contact the Advancement Office.
Your gift could be matched dollar for dollar. Many companies offer matching gift programs that will double or even triple a donation’s value. Some companies match gifts by spouses and/or retirees. Contact your human resources department for eligibility information and to obtain a matching gift form and follow your employer’s matching gift procedures.
STOCK GIFTS Contributions of appreciated stocks, or other capital assets that have increased in value, can result in significant tax savings. The current full value of the gift can generally be deducted on federal and state income tax, and the capital gains tax on the amount of appreciation is avoided. We recommend that donors consult their financial advisor before making any final decisions.
PLANNED GIVING Wills, charitable trusts, bequests and life insurance policies offer the opportunity for a lasting legacy to benefit the future of The Buckley School. Whether you would like to put your donation to start today or benefit us after your lifetime, you can find a charitable plan that lets you provide for your family and support Buckley. Visit www.buckley.org/plannedgiving for more details.
For more information on any of the ways to give, please contact Director of Advancement Shelly Schroth at (818) 461-6747.
