Mission
The Buckley School is a dynamic, nurturing learning community committed to equity and inclusion. Our innovative teachers and challenging programs inspire creativity, courage, and collaboration. By promoting a balanced development of mind, body, and character, we encourage each student to find joy and meaning in life and make an impact in the world.
THE BUCKLEY SCHOOL
History
The Buckley School, founded in 1933 by Isabelle Buckley, is the oldest K-12 independent allgender educational day school in Los Angeles. Dr. Buckley developed the 4-Fold Plan of Education with equal emphasis on Academics, the Arts, Athletics, and Moral Education. These four pillars remain the foundation of our school and are continually updated to reflect current research in teaching, brain science, diversity, and a globalized world.
The Head of School
Dear Buckley Friends and Family,
As I reflect on the 2021-22 academic year, I can’t help but feel a sense of pride and gratitude. Last year’s theme, “Making Connections,” was evident across the entire campus, day after day. After bravely working through the challenges of the pandemic, students were able to reunite with their classmates and teachers, and reap the myriad benefits of in-person learning. A year full of joy and excitement culminated with Commencement on Gilley Field. We are so proud of the Class of 2022 and are cheering for them as they embark on their next chapters.
The 2021-2022 school year was also the launch of our new vision—the Portrait of a Graduate—a shared understandingand of the specific skills students need to thrive. After a year of reflection, imagination, and consultation with universities, futurists, think tanks, and international employers, we are clear that Buckley students must graduate as Architects of the Future. Throughout last year, our students learned the skills outlined in the Portrait, how to “communicate with clarity and purpose,” “see strength in difference,” and “view challenges as opportunities.” We taught them to “ask a better question” and nurtured their sense of lifelong “experimentation, play, and curiosity.” Through newly created internships, the film festival, workshops, and beyond, Buckley established opportunities for students to explore their interests and “find joy in artistic expression.” This was all made possible for our students by your investment in our community.
The Annual Report on Philanthropy is one of the many ways we say thank you to each and every member of the Buckley community for your contributions. Our faculty and students rely on your generosity to create opportunities for educational progress and technological advancement. Through your philanthropic efforts, volunteer time, and partnership with the school, you have all impacted Buckley in a significant way. The Buckley community could not be what it is today without you, and for this we are incredibly grateful.
I would like to extend a special thank you to Chip Sellers, who served as the chair of the Board of Trustees for the past two years. Chip partnered with me to steward the school through the pandemic, navigating ever-changing Covid protocols, ensuring the school’s sustainability, and offering wise counsel throughout. A stalwart champion of DEI, Chip led the board to redeploy resources and increase financial aid by 40 percent. In addition, under his leadership, the school embraced the Portrait of a Graduate, and the Board approved both Buckley’s next strategic plan, which sets the course for the next six years for the school, and the “It’s Time” campaign, a fundraising effort to support facilities enhancements to the northern and southern ends of our campus. Chip’s impact will be longlasting and Buckley is better for his leadership.
This year, Buckley turns 90. One can’t help but reflect on the past and the generations of families, alumni, faculty and staff and friends who built the school we enjoy today, while we imagine the incredible possibilities ahead. Thanks to your generosity, Buckley is able to celebrate its dynamic history and provide a bold future for our students.
Thank you for your continued love and support of Buckley.
Alona Scott Head of School BuckleyLETTER FROM
The Board Chair
As Board Chair for the last two years, I was privileged to have a front row seat and see directly how deftly Head of School Alona Scott, the administrative team and the faculty and staff responded to the challenges resulting from the pandemic. Their commitment to our students is truly inspiring.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am proud and humbled by the generosity of so many of you during the 2021-2022 school year. Your impressive philanthropic efforts provide Buckley with the resources necessary to continue to provide our students with an outstanding education. Thank you to the entire of the community for strengthening the culture of giving at the Buckley School.
The composition of the Board of Trustees is stronger than ever, with highly dedicated and engaged individuals who bring a broad array of knowledge and expertise to help ensure Buckley’s long-term sustainability. I am pleased to share that Ben Vega, a trustee since 2019, stepped forward to serve as board chair. Ben has been a leader on the advancement committee, including serving as Buckley Fund co-chair for several years, on the committee on trustees, and on the executive committee, where he served as secretary. With Ben as board chair, I have no doubt that Buckley will continue to thrive as a community.
I would also like to thank three exceptional members of our board whose terms ended last year. Leslie Goetzman and Ron Wanglin are both trustees emeriti who returned to the board in 2018. Their understanding of board governance and the Buckley community were invaluable. Valeria Rico-Nikolov fulfilled her third three-year terms, including serving as Board Chair from 20182020. Thank you for your dedication and commitment to Buckley.
I am proud of the work accomplished last year and am certain that our community will ensure that Buckley remains a source of pride for all of us.
Thank you,
Chip Sellers Chair of the Board of Trustees, 2020-2022WELCOME NEW TRUSTEES

Our strategic plan is uniquely focused on:
The Board of Trustees approved Buckley’s 2021-2027 strategic plan in May 2022. It is designed to bring the Portrait of a Graduate to life, laying out plans to enhance educational programming, expand our commitment to wellness, and further strengthen community connections.
Developed through an inclusive process with significant input from faculty, staff, families, alumni, students, and friends of the school, we are excited to move forward with our 2021–2027 strategic plan, “Architects of the Future: Preparing to define, create, and imagine our world.” We will concentrate our efforts over
the next six years on three strategic priorities. Each priority is necessary for our students and our school to flourish and tied to our mission’s commitment to equity, inclusion, and the balanced development of mind, body, and character. Important now and for our future, our plans are set upon a core obligation to institutional financial sustainability. The strategies laid out build upon a strong educational program constructed by dynamic and nurturing educators in the context of a warm, and diverse community.

BUCKLEY FUND Donor Roll
Since its founding in 1933, The Buckley School has relied upon the generosity of parents and guardians, alumni, faculty and staff, and friends. The Buckley Fund is the cornerstone of those philanthropic efforts, providing critical financial support to the current operating budget. Unrestricted donations of the Buckley Fund ensure that Buckley has the resources to respond to challenges and opportunities as they arise, ensuring faculty and staff can provide the most relevant and compelling Buckley experience to all 830 students.
The Buckley School is deeply grateful to those who supported the 2021-22 Buckley Fund with unrestricted and restricted gifts. Over 100 donors opted to restrict their Buckley Fund donations, designating the gifts to financial aid, faculty and staff professional development, DEI, program and technology, the visual arts and science departments, health and wellness, the performing arts, and the new media program.
All investments in the Buckley Fund allow students to make unexpected connections, both in and out of the classroom, form a better understanding of the world around them, and discover new and exciting forms of expression.
Buckley would not be Buckley without your support. Thank you!

Senior Class Legacy Fund Donors
Each year, parents are asked to support the Senior Class Legacy Fund to honor their graduating senior, and to support the general endowment at Buckley. Founded in 2006, the Senior Class Legacy Fund continues to grow as alumni give in honor of their class year and as subsequent classes establish their own legacy funds. The combined impact for future generations of Buckley students will be tremendous.

HOOPLA Financial Aid Endowment
In 2004, the Parents’ Association planned HOOPLA: a basketball clinic, designed to bring together hundreds of young people to celebrate health, fitness and education with NBA and WNBA players along with motivational speakers to captivate, motivate and inspire. The event was so successful that the funds raised were able to establish the HOOPLA Financial Aid Endowment Fund for minority students.
Walter H. Baumhoff Endowment Fund
The longest serving head of school other than founder Isabelle Buckley, Walter H. Baumhoff retired in 1998 after a 20-year career at Buckley. Today, his legacy extends beyond the students he impacted and the campus he built to future Buckley students, who will benefit from his planned gift.
The Walter H. Baumhoff Endowment Fund for Financial Aid ensures that the best and brightest students benefit from a Buckley education, regardless of financial capacity. The Alumni Courtyard was dedicated as the Walter H. Baumhoff Alumni Courtyard in 2019 in appreciation for his leadership and commitment to the future of Buckley.

Margaret Mason Endowment Fund
It can be said that the heart of the Buckley community lies within its dedicated teachers. And no greater example of this dedication is Dr. Margaret Mack Mason. World Languages Department Chair, who truly embodied the depth and soul of the Buckley commitment and what it meant to be an exceptional educator.
Buckley’s world languages department thrived under the leadership of Dr. Mason for more than 20 years. Having arrived at Buckley in 1983, Dr. Mason’s presence was felt everywhere on campus. She taught french, english, humanities and went on to work for the college counseling department.
Today Dr. Mason’s rich legacy lives on through her incredible bequest to Buckley. Through her generosity, the Margaret Mason Endowment Fund for Professional Development was established in 2019. Her gift, combined with the additional match from a handful of Buckley families, grows each year, and will leave an impact on generations of Buckley students to come.

Last year, several faculty retired at Buckley and opened the door to a new chapter. Together they have taught at Buckley for more than 100 years.
AFSANEH NURY
Afsaneh began her career in 1995. She taught both Middle and Upper School, and every level of Spanish except 1A. Afsaneh hopes to use her time volunteering and continuing to serve the community. Ms. Nury’s warmth and kindness truly will be missed.
ELLEN MAHONEY
Ellen began her time at Buckley in 1981 when she was recruited by the Upper School Head at the time, David Arnold, to chair the visual arts department. Today, there is hardly a single Buckley alum who did not take one of her art classes. Ellen is looking forward to re-engaging her jewelry bench and potter’s wheel in retirement, and to working with warm glass, a passion she acquired while teaching it in Upper School.
MARTA CONLEY
Marta came to Buckley in 2003 as a Lower School physical education teacher and quickly became the coach for several Lower and Middle School athletic teams. Her goal was “to empower girls to have confidence in themselves, be supportive of one another, and have each other’s backs.” Students and teachers will miss Coach Conley, her positive attitude, and ready smile.
RANDEE BORGGREBE
Randee retired as Buckley’s longest-standing teacher and most senior Buckley veteran. Ms. Borggrebe began her career at Buckley in the fall of 1978 in Lower School, teaching Beginners (pre-K) and P.E. She became chair of the Upper School computer department and bought Buckley’s first round of Macs. Ms. Borggrebe went from teaching Upper School back to Lower School and also to Summer School, ending her career in the Lower School Library as a technology specialist. Always ready with a warm hello, Randee will be truly missed!

MESSAGE FROM Alumni Board Co-Presidents
Eli Goetzman ’08 and Marlen Grussi ’13
Hello Alumni,
We’re so grateful to have had the opportunity to serve as co-presidents of the Alumni Engagement Board (AEB). Observing the power and conviction of the alumni voice and spirit has had an incredible impact us and on the board. We have been inspired by watching so many of you put your intentions into action. It has been a really special opportunity to get to know the many constituencies of the community and to witness doors and opportunities open for alumni input and participation. Thanks for supporting us and letting us represent you all! We both hope to continue impacting and growing our alumni community in meaningful and necessary ways.
We are so excited for Grant Chang ’89 and Chad Lasdon ’97 in their new roles as president and vice-president of the AEB. We look forward to supporting their work as they lead us in growing and fostering Buckley’s alumni network.

MESSAGE FROM Alumni Engagement Board President
Grant Chang ’89
Dear Alumni,
First, let me wholeheartedly express my gratitude and admiration for the leadership and loyalty to the AEB and Buckley that previous Co-Presidents Eli Goetzman ’08 and Marlen Grussi ’13 have exhibited. They have led us through the pandemic via this crazy thing we all learned about called Zoom and brought us to the point where we can now get to the work of engaging with all alumni and making sure that Buckley’s past, present, and future are recognized and remembered.
My story is pretty simple. Buckley has always been a special place for me. I remember my mom telling me one day in September 1981, after I had already started school somewhere else, that I would be moving schools. My first reaction was no thanks, I’m good. She also said I would need to get a haircut and wear a uniform—a white collared shirt, neck tie, blazer, grey slacks, and black oxford shoes. Definitely, no thanks! But guess what? It’s been almost 33 years since I happily graduated from Buckley. And to top that off, my son is now a proud Griffin.
However, the gap between my graduation and today is why I wanted to be a part of the Alumni Engagement Board. I believe one of the strongest symbols of a school’s success and dedication to its students is when alumni are active and engaged and want to bring their kids to Buckley. This year I hope that, as a board, we can bring more of them back and remind them what made Buckley so special! Griffin pride is real and has long-lasting implications.
Today, probably more than ever, Buckley needs its alumni to help sustain and improve the Buckley experience. Thank you to every alum recognized in this year’s Annual Report on Philanthropy. Your investment in our alma mater makes an immediate and tangible impact on today’s students and, just as important, sets an example for all alumni to follow.
Stay healthy and as I’ve been saying a lot lately, LET’S GO!

Parents’ Association
Dear Buckley Community,
This year has been a rewarding experience to say the least, and I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to lead the Parents’ Association. In our “Year of Yes,” when we asked a lot of our community, we were inspired to see so many of you answering the call. From a memorable Under the Belltower Welcome Back Bash on Gilley Field, to the Roaring Twenties Gala and Auction at Vibiana, to ending the year with our Camp Buckley Fair - we can honestly say we shot for the moon and landed in the stars.
This year was not without its challenges, and I’d like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our PA Executive Vice President and fellow alumna Jessica Ekeberg Oakes ’00, Erin Fitzgerald and the Buckley parent liaison team, and especially our Parents’ Association Executive Board. The tremendous effort they put forth to accomplish all we did rallied our community and built it back even stronger than it was before the COVID-19 closures.
With their leadership, the hard work of our volunteers, and the support of our entire community, we are proud to share that the Parents’ Association raised over $300,000 to support teachers and students. Knowing that we are giving our children the opportunity to thrive in this amazing community, while supporting our faculty and staff in their work to create an unparalleled student experience, makes the time and effort all worth it.
Thank you all for supporting the Parents’ Association! I look forward to seeing what Jess and Ai-Vy have in store for the rest of the 2022-23 school year!

Ways to GIVE
Philanthropy– your gifts– is what turns a good school into a great school! The Buckley School is grateful for the long history of philanthropy and generosity of spirit that exists among members of our community. Financial support from parents and guardians, grandparents, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends provides exceptional opportunities and outstanding resources for our students and programs.
Buckley’s continued excellence depends on regular support from generous members of the community. Every gift to our school–regardless of size– sends a strong message that we are committed to our students, their education, and the future of The Buckley School. There are several ways to make a tax-deductible donation to the school.
CASH, CHECK, OR CREDIT CARD
Contributions made by check, cash, or credit card are tax-deductible in the year the donation is given. Please make checks payable to “The Buckley School.” To make a donation with your credit card, you can use our online donation form or contact the Advancement Office.
STOCK GIFTS
Contributions of appreciated stocks, or other capital assets that have increased in value, can result in significant tax saving. The current full value of the gift can generally be deducted on federal and state income tax, and the capital gains tax on the amount of appreciation is avoided. We recommend that donors consult their financial advisor before making any financial decisions.
MATCHING GIFTS
Your gift could be matched dollar for dollar. Many companies* offer matching gift programs that will double or even triple a donation’s value. Some companies match gifts by spouses and/or retirees. Contact your human resources department for eligibility information and to obtain a matching gift form and follow your employer’s matching gift procedures.
*Companies that offer matching gift programs include, but are not limited to:
PLANNED GIVING
Wills, charitable trusts, bequests and life insurance policies offer the opportunity for a lasting legacy to benefit the future of The Buckley School. Whether you would like to put your donation to start today or benefit us after your lifetime, you can find a charitable plan that lets you provide for your family and support Buckley. Contact Director of Advancement Shelly Schroth for more details.
