Athletics Mission Statement The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University. Bucknell Bison Athletics Setting the Standard of Excellence

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal.

With three more Patriot League championships in 2008-09, Bucknell has now earned 73 crowns in 19 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 100 conference players of the year, 83 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 476 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 15 times in the 19-year history of the affiliation, including 11 of the last 12 years. Bucknell claimed the overall and women’s Cup standings in 2008-09. It was the 12th straight year and the 15th time overall that the Bison took home the women’s title. In 2008-09, Bucknell won Patriot League titles in women’s outdoor track & field, women’s rowing and men’s golf. Additionally, the baseball and men’s lacrosse teams captured regular-season titles.

According to federal data released by the NCAA in the fall of 2008, Bucknell’s four-year student-athlete graduation rate was second-highest in the nation among student-athletes who entered college between the 1998-99 and 2001-02 academic years. With a four-class average of 89 percent, Bucknell trailed only Davidson (92 percent) among all Division I institutions reporting federal graduation rates (the Ivy League and military academies do not report federal graduation rates). Georgetown, Notre Dame and Holy Cross were also at 89 percent. Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate is identical to its overall student-body average of 89 percent.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 113 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of ESPN The Magazine All-America selections.

A total of 366 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2008-09 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 238 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring of 2009.

24 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2009.

In addition to the 117 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 276 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including a school-record 22 in 2008-09.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

Bucknell Bison Athletics

A National Model in Promoting the Scholar-Athlete Ideal Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national model when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. OTHER PROGRAMMING: The Department of Athletics, through the identification of outside speakers and periodic “Brown Bag Luncheons,” thrives to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience as well as to educate student-athletes on a variety of issues that may affect them throughout their collegiate career. Some recent topics of interest have been alcohol, nutrition, body image, hazing, sexuality, diversity, career development, study skills, religious life and gambling.

Season Outlook Heading into the new decade, Bucknell softball is looking back on the last few years and finding the keys to make the future even brighter. The Bison have finished among the top three in the Patriot League and qualified for the league tournament in each of the last two years. They have also made their marks in the Bucknell record books, proving that they are on the right path to contend for another Patriot League title. With those accolades in mind, Bucknell is eager to become consistent contenders, beating out its strongest opponents on a regular basis. The Bison will rely on their outstanding work ethic and fundamental defensive play to accomplish those goals in 2010. “Their work ethic is really what’s going to set them above the rest,” said head coach Heather Rakosik, now in her sixth year at the helm for the Bison. “They’re a group that’s always willing to do extra. They want to be the number one team in the league and they’re working for it.” PITCHING - The 2010 pitching staff is a young one with two sophomores and two freshmen, but it has all the necessary tools to be a strong one as well. The Bison will be led in the circle by Jane Messersmith, who earned a wealth of experience as one of the team’s top pitchers last year, finishing 9-12 with 81 strikeouts, and showed her value at the plate. “She really stepped up last year and she’s improved and gotten more consistent,” praised Rakosik. “She’s somebody we look to to be more of a power pitcher and an all-around player that can do a lot of different things besides just help us win games from the mound.” Also returning is Liz Fanning, who will be looking to bounce back from injury after making 15 appearances in her freshman campaign. The freshman duo of Bridget Gates and Alex MacLean should also bolster Bucknell’s rotation. Together, Gates, who is known as a workhorse, and MacLean, a finesse pitcher, will be expected to consistently put the Bison in a position to win. “Bridget and Alex are unbelievable additions to our program and pitching staff,” said Rakosik. “They have the winning mentality and work ethic to succeed at this level. I have no doubt that they will make an immediate impact in the Patriot League.” CATCHING - For yet another year, catcher is a position at which the Bison will not be short of able bodies. Two-time All-Patriot League selection Elyse Colmenero will again anchor the crew, and Bucknell will look to the junior for additional leadership. “We’re looking for her to step up and be even more of a leader in all ways,” said Rakosik. “She has a very potent bat, one of the best arms in the league and we’re hoping that she can continue to push our pitchers to be the best pitching staff in the league.” Also gunning for time at catcher are Kara Sullivan, Alicia Wheeler and Meredith Dickson. Sullivan worked her way into the rotation last year and is expected to pick up where she left off after spending the fall semester abroad. “Wheeler has worked extremely hard in the off season to improve behind the plate and with her bat, while also being versatile enough to contribute in the outfield,” said Rakosik. The Bison will also look for Dickson to get in the mix as she continues to show her prowess at the plate. FIRST BASE - Bucknell lost all-league selection Cassie Lloyd to graduation, but it has two veterans in Shelly McCormack and Alison Ford ready to take the reins at first. McCormack played some of her best softball during the past fall season, and the Bison expect the senior’s offensive abilities to continue to shine. “She has a lot of power and home run potential,” explained Rakosik. “We’re looking for her to have her best hitting season yet this year.” Ford was an all-league selection as a utility player a year ago after splitting her time between first and third. The junior ranks ninth all-time in career home runs at Bucknell. “Alison has phenomenal defensive fundamentals and legitimate power at the plate. We are looking for her to continue to make a difference in our program,” said Rakosik. SECOND BASE - After seeing action at both second base and shortstop last year because of Bison injuries, Jessie Snyder will be called upon to return to her usual duties during her junior campaign. Like Ford, Snyder ranks ninth all-time in career homers after connecting for six last year. “She’s one of the best middle infielders in the league. She’s got phenomenal

range, a great head for the game and definitely can put the ball in play,” said Rakosik. “She did a great job hitting last year, especially with the long ball.” Joining the Bison middle infielders is freshman Mary Horton. Known for her athleticism and fundamentally sound defense, the left-handed hitter should also make a strong contribution at the plate. SHORTSTOP - Alyssa Okita has a firm grasp on shortstop this year. After missing a portion of last season with a knee injury, the senior co-captain is back and as strong as ever. “She’s really put herself in a position to be a very strong shortstop with her range and work ethic. Offensively, she’s potent in that she can hit for average, she can hit for power, she’s got a great short game and we’re looking for her to be a main leader on the field,” lauded Rakosik. Snyder will also likely see some time at shortstop while backing up her elder teammate. THIRD BASE - The Bison look to be very strong at the hot corner in 2010 with a pair of all-league selections. Joining Ford at the position will be Mary Pavlovich, a second-team honoree as a sophomore, the eighth-ranked doubles hitter in Bucknell history and an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District selection. “We are very lucky to be in the position of having two of the top third baseman in the league in Alison and Mary,” said Rakosik. “Alison has great field presence at third and all the tools it takes to be successful there. “Mary is back for her senior year and she’s a player who, since her freshman year has made an impact,” Rakosik continued of Pavlovich. “She’s a nitty gritty player who always gets it done. Offensively she’s a switch hitter, so that gives us a great threat from either side of the plate and she’s shown that she can definitely do some damage at the plate.” OUTFIELD - The Bucknell outfield will see several new faces this spring. The Bison graduated the university’s first- and second-ranked players in terms of games played in four-year starters Ashley Beans and Ashley Carlson, yet they retain a number of experienced upperclassmen as well. A former Rookie of the Year, Lauren Fry is the lone returning starter, and Bucknell will rely on for her consistent play at the plate and in the field. “Defensively she’s got great range. Her height and speed make her a great candidate for center field,” said Rakosik. “We’re looking for her to really step up and be a leader in the outfield.” Other veterans returning include co-captains Sherry Finkel and Sam Rollandi, and Lauren Trosch. Also a utility player with strong fundamentals, Finkel is adept at each of the outfield positions and brings a variety of important qualities to the squad. A converted infielder, Rollandi has really taken to the position over the last twoplus years and provides added depth for the Bison. “She’s really embraced the fundamentals of outfield. Every day she gets better, and it’s really fun to watch, said Rakosik. “She’s somebody that knows the game. She’s got a very good arm. She is very strong with decision making, and offensively she has a lot of potential at the plate.” As a senior, Trosch has shown her value in the field and at the plate over the past three years. “She’s worked very hard on her defensive game and, more importantly, she’s a very good lefty slapper threat,” according to the head coach. “She’s a battler at the plate and a very, very hard worker and a great athlete.” Rounding out the group of returning fielders are Wheeler and Messersmith. The versatile Wheeler has worked hard at making herself an option at a position other than catcher. The Bison will also look to get Messersmith into the outfield rotation when not in the pitching circle. New to the Bison’s group of outfielders are freshmen Kathryn Wilkinson, Cassie Greenhawk and Laura Sandford. With one of the strongest arms on the team, Wilkinson looks to be a threat in right field for the Orange and Blue. “We’re looking for her to make an impact there, especially using her strong arm to help us control runners,” said Rakosik. “Offensively, she’s shown that she can make things happen. She can hit to all fields.” Greenhawk, a left-handed slap hitter who made two appearances in the Maryland state championship game while in high school, will bring a burst of quickness to the lineup. “Her speed is stellar. Defensively she can cover a lot of ground, and we’re definitely going to look for Cassie to use her athleticism to get in the lineup and help us win games.” Sandford will provide Bucknell with even more versatility as the newcomer will likely split time between the outfield and second base. The New Jersey native also has state championship experience on the softball field as well as with her high school’s field hockey squad. “She comes from a very strong softball background and she’s got some great fundamentals. We’re looking for her to take those to the next level, but she’s definitely worked very hard at the outfield position.”

Coaching Staff Heather rakosik Head Coach Sixth Season Muskingum ’98 At Bucknell: 88-153-1

Heather Rakosik was hired as the fourth head coach in the history of the Bucknell softball program in 2004 and enters her sixth season at the helm in 2010. When hired, Rakosik had just finished leading Ohio Wesleyan to a recordsetting season. Led by three all-region performers and the first All-American in program history, the Battling Bishops won a school-record 28 games and captured the North Coast Athletic Conference regular season title for the first time. In three seasons as head coach at OWU, Rakosik’s teams improved their record every year, and she compiled a 60-54-1 overall ledger. A native of Toledo, Ohio, Rakosik led the 2008 Bison to their first tournament in three years on her way to being named the Patriot League Coach of the Year. The tournament appearance came on the heels of close calls in 2006 and 2007 when Bucknell entered the final weekend of regular-season play in playoff contention but fell just short. The 2009 squad earned its second consecutive postseason appearance and was the third for Rakosik at the helm for the Bison. After taking over a Bucknell team that went 1426 overall and 8-12 in the Patriot League in 2004, she helped the Bison increase their win total to 16 in her first season as they qualified for the Patriot League Tournament for the second consecutive year after enduring a three-year hiatus from the postseason. That year Rakosik helped tutor Lauren Wible to a .524 batting average, which led the nation. The last four years Rakosik has expanded the team’s schedule to nearly 50 games in hopes of preparing the team better for Patriot League play. Additionally, she has had the squad begin the season in

mid-February, rather than mid-March, as had been the case before her arrival. In addition to her duties as head softball coach at Ohio Wesleyan, Rakosik also served as an instructor in the physical education department as well as assistant women’s basketball coach. She helped guide the team to a winning record in each of her three seasons, highlighted by an NCAC championship and NCAA “Sweet Sixteen” appearance in 2002. Prior to her tenure at Ohio Wesleyan, Rakosik served as head softball coach and assistant women’s basketball coach at Hiram College. There, she led the diamond squad to its best overall record in 11 years. Rakosik is a 1998 graduate of Muskingum University in New Concord, Ohio. She graduated cum laude with a degree in health and physical education, as well as a K-12 teaching certificate. She also gained valuable athletics experience working as an assistant in the sports information office as well as with the women’s athletic director. As a student-athlete, Rakosik starred in both basketball and softball. On the hardwood she was a 1,000-point scorer (1,378) who broke school records for points (37) and 3-pointers (8) made in a game. She was a First Team All-Ohio Athletic Conference selection in softball and the recipient of the OAC Clyde A. Lamb Scholar-Athlete Award. Her stellar career with the Muskies recently led to her induction into the Muskingum Athletic Hall of Fame in the fall of 2009. Rakosik went on to earn a master’s degree in education from Defiance (Ohio) College in 2000. While at Defiance, Rakosik also served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator with the women’s basketball program, helping to guide the team to a 22-5 record and a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association title. As the head junior varsity coach, she led her team to a 14-3 record. At Bucknell, Rakosik has won nearly 90 games in her first five seasons and in 2008 passed Janelle Breneman for second place on the Bison career wins list. During her first five years at the helm of the Bison, Rakosik has tutored eight players to First Team all-Patriot League plaudits, including two-time selections Lauren Litts, Lauren Wible and Elyse Colmenero. Additionally, six other players have earned Second Team All-Patriot League honors.

Assistant Coach Second Season William Paterson ’04

Samantha Kszepka, a former All-American player at William Paterson University, was named an assistant softball coach at Bucknell in July 2008. Kszepka works closely with the Bucknell pitchers and is an integral part of the Bison recruiting effort. Kszepka, a highly decorated player during her college career, was a Third Team All-America selection as a utility player in 2002. She was also the New Jersey Athletic Conference and ECAC Player of the Year the same season when she hit a team-best .463 with three home runs and 30 runs batted in and posted a 13-4 record with a miniscule 0.86 ERA. After a 9-1 mark in the circle as a senior in 2003, Kszepka finished her career 36-10 with a 1.50 ERA. A 2004 graduate of William Paterson with a bachelor’s degree in exercise and movement science, Kszepka broke into coaching at the high school level in 2006 when she was an assistant softball coach at Willingboro High School in New Jersey. The New Egypt, N.J., native also taught health and physical education at Willingboro for two years. Kszepka made the jump to the college level in 2007 when she joined the softball staff at nearby Susquehanna University and helped lead the squad to a solid 16-12 mark. While with the Crusaders she directed workouts for the pitchers, assisted with recruiting and implemented the winter workout and conditioning program. A year later Kszepka moved to Division I Norfolk State as an assistant. There, she was the recruiting coordinator and was in charge of workouts for pitchers, catchers and the outfield for a team that posted 23 victories.

Patriot League Academic Honor Roll For the fourth consecutive year, Bucknell led the league in Academic Honor Roll selections as 15 Bison were recognized in 2009. The Patriot League’s Academic Honor Roll, which cites student-athletes with a grade-point average of 3.20 or better during the semester coinciding with his or her sport.

Assistant Coach First Season Susquehanna ’09

Laurie Blaszka became the newest member of the Bucknell softball coaching staff prior to the start of the 2010 season. Blaszka joins the Bison after completing an impressive career at nearby Susquehanna University where she was named a two-time National Fastpitch Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete. A two-year captain of the Crusaders, Blaszka can be found on a dozen of Susquehanna’s top-10 lists, including atop the rankings in career home runs and in the top five in single-season homers, doubles, total bases and at-bats. She earned both Rookie of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year for her team in 2007, then repeated as the top offensive player in 2009. Off the field Blaszka earned several academic accolades, including the Connie N. Harnum Female Senior Scholar-Athlete Award and a pair of selections to the Landmark Academic Honor Roll while earning her degree in mathematics. Blaszka was also heavily involved on campus where she was vice president of the Kappa Mu Epsilon Mathematics Honor Society as well as a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society, Kappa Delta Pi Education Honor Society and Sigma Alpha Pi National Leadership Society. In addition to her duties at Bucknell, Blaszka teaches math at Shikellamy High School.

Sandra Mowery

Volunteer Assistant Coach Third Season Ohio Wesleyan ’04 Sandra Mowery, a former student-athlete at Ohio Wesleyan under current Bison head coach Heather Rakosik, is in her first year as a volunteer assistant coach after spending the last two seasons as a graduate assistant with the Bison. Mowery, a native of Euclid, Ohio, was a four-year letterwinner on the Ohio Wesleyan softball team from 2001-04, the last three with Rakosik as her mentor. She served as team captain her senior year, was named First Team All-North Coast Athletic Conference, and helped the team to a share of a conference title before graduating with a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education in 2004. Following graduation, Mowery was a permanent building substitute teacher at Thomas Jefferson Magnet School, an employee of the Euclid Board of Education and a private tutor for third- and fifth-grade students in subjects ranging from math and science to spelling. In addition to her many experiences in school settings, Mowery spent nearly a decade working for Euclid Parks and Recreation in various roles, including as a sports camp counselor. In 2007, Mowery got her start coaching at the high school level when she served as Euclid High School’s junior varsity softball coach. Mowery recently completed her master’s degree in counseling at Bucknell.

1997 Team Reunion During the April 14, 2007 doubleheader with Lehigh, the Bucknell softball team recognized the 10-year anniversary of the only Patriot League title in program history. Hall of Fame/ PL All-Decade Team Softball Players in Bucknell Hall of Fame The following former softball players have been inducted into Bucknell’s Athletic Hall of Fame: Lisa Fink (’93): One of Bucknell’s top female athletes and arguably the top softball player in school history, Fink was also a star on the basketball court for the Bison. A four-time all-league selection in softball, Fink batted .440 during her senior year and earned Patriot League Player of the Year and First Team Academic All-America honors. Fink owned a .378 career batting average and never hit below .344 in her four-year career. The rare first-ballot Hall of Famer was an NCAA Woman of the Year nominee in 1993. Entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2003. Sharon Nichols (’91): The most dominating softball pitcher to ever wear the Orange and Blue, Nichols graduated with every pitching record, and to this day she still holds eight Bucknell marks including three career records. A perennial all-conference selection, she posted a 0.83 career earned run average, notched 332 strikeouts and had 51 victories in the circle. During her career she threw four no-hitters and a perfect game, and in 1991 she compiled a streak of 59.2 innings without allowing an earned run. As a senior, Nichols ranked sixth nationally with a 0.38 ERA and compiled a 16-6 mark with eight shutouts. Entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2001

Dawn Becker (’85): An outstanding pitcher, Becker compiled one of the most impressive careers in Bucknell softball history. Becker set numerous Bucknell softball pitching records and was a two-time East Coast Conference Dawn Becker Scholar-Athlete and Second Team Academic All-American. Entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1997. Stacey Spitko (’88): An outstanding basketball and softball player, Spitko started every basketball game and all but two softball games in her career. En route, she set school records and earned Academic All-America honors in both sports. Entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1995.

Jen Yuengling (’93): Considered one of the best catchers and leadoff hitters in the history of the Bucknell softball program, Yuengling’s .332 career average ranks ninth all-time. She also broke school records for career walks (66) and recorded the longest hitting streak (20) in program history. Yuengling was named to the All-East Coast Conference Team in 1990 and to the All-Patriot League squad in 1993. She was later named to the Patriot League All-Decade Team. Entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2009.

Lynne Walshaw (’89): A four-year starter and All-East Coast Conference selection, Walshaw graduated Bucknell holding 14 school records. Of those 14 records, her .702 slugging percentage was still tops on the Bucknell singleseason list when entering Hall of Fame. Entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2000. Dianne Czarnecki (’87): A four-year letterwinner and All-East Coast Conference selection in both field hockey and softball, Czarnecki also picked up all-region honors on the diamond her senior season. Entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1999.

Jill Henry (’81): A three-sport captain in field hockey, basketball and softball, Henry-Feeney set game and season scoring records in basketball and was twice named to the Academic All-America College Division Team. Entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1993.

In 2005, Bucknell’s Lauren Wible hit .524 to lead the nation and break Bucknell and Patriot League records. The Dover, Pa., native was named the Patriot League Player of the Year, became the first Bison since 1999 to earn a spot on the All-Mid Atlantic Region First Team and copped Academic All-America honors. The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 15 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 19 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 118 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans in 38 years and 113 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 19 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholar-athlete model. The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success. The facility enhances each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and greatly expands the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni. Three primary venues lie within the KLARC Front Entrance facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a brand new display highlighting Bucknell’s all-time Academic All-Americans, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes. The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996. One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison wrestling and volleyball teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities. As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club; Depew Field, the home of the Bison baseball team; the spacious West Fields for softball, Emmitt Field for soccer and Graham KLARC Lobby Field for field hockey, including Holmes Stadium with covered grandstand seats, ticket and concession areas, team rooms, a training room and a press box area for soccer, field hockey and women’s lacrosse.

Varsity Softball Field Located on the west side of Route 15, Bucknell’s Varsity Softball Field is the home venue for the Bison softball team. Adjacent to baseball’s Depew Field, the softball field is a fenced complex that contains a natural grass outfield with a manicured infield. The facility is slated to undergo extensive renovations beginning at the conclusion of the 2010 campaign. Bucknell owns a 205-194-3 (.510) all-time record on its home field. The Bison went 3-10-1 in 2007 before rebounding to go 13-6 at home in 2008. Varsity Softball Field is scheduled to host no fewer than 14 games in 2010, including 12 weekend Patriot League contests. Patriot League In its second decade of combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 23 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham and Georgetown as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have, and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League finished at the top spot with 96 percent of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 76 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the 2008-09 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams accomplished the following: • 14 student-athletes earned ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America honors • 61 student-athletes were recognized as ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District recipients, with 45 on the First Team. • Bucknell won its 15th overall and women’s Patriot League Presidents’ Cup trophy, while Army won the men’s trophy for the first time since 2005. • Holy Cross men’s soccer senior Jerry Dickinson was awarded a Fulbright Grant to work and study in South Africa. • Navy’s Kelly Zahalka earned her third Academic All-America selection from CoSIDA, and was also named to the USA Today First-Team All-Academic squad. She also earned both a Truman and Marshall Scholarship. • Navy’s Lizzie Barnes was one of 58 student-athletes nationally to receive an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship and was also a First-Team All-Senior All-America selection. • Army became the first Patriot League team to advance to the finals of the NCAA Baseball Regional. • Bucknell’s Andrew Cohen set a record with a score of 208 at the Patriot League Golf Championship, and was named Golf World’s College Player of the Week for his effort. • Colgate’s Nick Hennessey and Steve Jonas and Holy Cross’ Brett McDermott all signed NFL free agent contracts. • The Lehigh women’s basketball team was one of 14 NCAA Tournament participants to record a perfect graduation rate. • Army men’s soccer goalkeeper A.J. Glubzinski was a First-Team AllSenior All-America selection and Lowe’s Senior CLASS award finalist. • American’s Irene Schickhardt and Christine Fingerhuth were both named Longstreth/NFHCA Division I Field Hockey All-Americans. • Navy’s Erica Ziel became the fourth female student-athlete to earn the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete award in Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field in the same academic year. • Twelve Patriot League student-athletes received Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars awards. • Bucknell rowing senior Page Kannor, Army baseball sophomore Kevin McKague and Lehigh softball senior Lisa Sweeney each appeared in SportsIllustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd”.

The Presidents’ Cup The Presidents’ Cup signifies overall excellence in the 23 sports sponsored by the Patriot League, and Bucknell has won the Cup 15 times in its 19-year existence, including 11 of the last 12 years. The Presidents’ Cup is awarded annually to the institution that accumulates the highest point total over the entire academic year, with points awarded on the basis of the school’s finish in each of the 23 Patriot League sports. If there is a league tournament in a sport, the points are awarded based on the average of the regular season and tournament finish, and if there is no post-season tournament, points are awarded based on regular-season standings.

Life After Bucknell Graduates of Bucknell University have the highest earning potential in the nation, a new research survey revealed in July 2008. The 2008 Education and Salary Report, prepared and released by Seattle based PayScale Inc., named Bucknell graduates No. 1 among graduates of top U.S. liberal arts colleges by salary potential. The top liberal arts college category showed that the starting median salary for Bucknell graduates was $54,100, while the mid-career median salary was $110,000. Bucknell was followed by Colgate University at $52,800 and $108,000 and Amherst at $54,500 and $107,000, respectively. The salary report, the first issued by the company, also ranked Bucknell 13th among all Northeastern colleges and universities for salary potential. Dartmouth College, Princeton University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Yale University, and Harvard University were Nos. 1-5, respectively. Except for Cooper Union (No. 9), Bucknell was the only predominantly undergraduate institution in the top 14 in this category. Contacts As per NCAA by-law 13.02.3, a contact is any face-to-face encounter between a prospect or the prospect’s parent or legal guardian and an institutional staff member or athletics representative during which any dialogue occurs in excess of an exchange of a greeting. Any such face-to-face encounter that is prearranged or takes place on the grounds of the prospect’s high school, or at the site of organized competition or practice involving the prospect’s high school, preparatory school, two-year college, or all-star team is considered a contact, regardless of the conversation that occurs. We are limited to three off-campus contact days per prospective student-athlete.
