What it means to

be a bison

Daria Tuzhikova

Evan Zimmer The term “student-athlete signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University. Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics. Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You believe that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience. At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics. Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

Bucknell Bison Athletics Setting the Standard of Excellence

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal.

25 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2011.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 17 times in the 21-year history of the affiliation, including 13 of the last 14 years. Bucknell claimed the overall, men’s and women’s Cup titles in 2010-11. It was the 14th straight year and the 17th time overall that the Bison took home the women’s title. In 2010-11, Bucknell won Patriot League titles in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, men’s lacrosse, women’s rowing and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field.

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates twice in the last 11 years, and it ranked No. 2 in the 2008 study. In the most recent survey in the fall of 2010, Bucknell ranked No. 7 in the nation.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 121 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of Capital One Academic All-America selections with 120.

A total of 421 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2010-11 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 259 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring of 2011.

In addition to the 120 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 314 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including a school-record 22 in 2008-09 and 21 more in 2010-11.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

With six Patriot League championships in 2010-11, Bucknell has now earned 87 crowns in 21 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 113 conference players of the year, 93 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 511 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

Bucknell Bison Athletics

A National Model in Promoting the Scholar-Athlete Ideal Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national model when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist studentathletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total studentathlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. OTHER PROGRAMMING: The Department of Athletics, through the identification of outside speakers and periodic “Brown Bag Luncheons,” thrives to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience as well as to educate student-athletes on a variety of issues that may affect them throughout their collegiate career. Some recent topics of interest have been alcohol, nutrition, body image, hazing, sexuality, diversity, career development, study skills, religious life and gambling.

Bucknell men’s tennis has been picking up steam lately, and people finally started to take notice last year when the Bison worked their way into the top half of the Patriot League standings. The 2011-12 season looks to have more of the same as the Orange and Blue vie for a league championship in April. Bucknell handled Lehigh in Lewisburg before putting up some of its closest results against Army and Navy in recent years. Bison head coach Rebecca Helt was not surprised by her team’s perGregg Cohenca formance last season. The factors that allowed them to contend a year ago – high playing level, strong physical ability and roster depth – will carry on, but it’s the mental toughness and the ability to come through in big moments at the end of matches that Helt sees as the final hurdle to her team’s postseason success. Contributing to that success will undoubtedly be senior and 2011 First Team All-Patriot League selection Gregg Cohenca. “The men are returning another strong, competitive squad from top to bottom,” said Helt, who is entering her 10th season as the men’s squad’s head coach. “Gregg Cohenca is returning after a very successful campaign at the top spot last year. We’ll look for him to make another big impact on the lineup in both singles and doubles as well as lead the team as one of three captains this year.” The team’s winningest returning player, Cohenca moved into the No. 1 spot in the singles lineup last year, ultimately finishing with a 13-13 mark. The Bison hope a three-set victory over Army in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals was a sign of things to come. On the doubles court, Cohenca teamed up with recent graduate Mark Malloy for a 16-10 record, giving them more wins than any other Bison duo last year. Cohenca enters the new year ranked in the program’s top 15 in both doubles (12th, 44) and combined (15th, 80) victories. Cohenca’s classmate and a fellow captain, Gregory Maxson will be playing for his fourth consecutive season with double-digit singles victories. After winning his flight with a three-set victory in the final at the Bucknell Invitational in the fall, he spent most of his spring playing at the No. 6 position. The Orange and Blue will continue to rely on his consistency throughout his final season. “Greg Maxson will be pushing the entire team with his work ethic on and off the court,” predicted Helt. “He has been part of this

team’s strong depth and will be looking for a starting position in the spring.” Rounding out the group of three captains is junior Evan Zimmer. He emerged as one of the squad’s top players last season when he became the only student-athlete to be named to both the All-Patriot League and Academic All-Patriot League teams. By going 17-10 in singles, he more than doubled his career wins totals and went 4-1 against league foes in the regular season. Zimmer also moved into the No. 1 slot in doubles with Anton Kovic, going 8-7 overall together and undefeated in the Patriot League Tournament. “Evan Zimmer was undoubtedly one of our most improved players last year in both singles and doubles. He had a tough task last year moving from the bottom of the lineup to the top last year, playing in the top three singles positions and at the No. 1 doubles position,” said Helt. “We’ll look to Evan to help advance the younger players over the course of the year. “Our other two juniors, Josh Katten and Kelly Morque have also made big impacts on our lineup the last two years and are expected to return to the starting lineup this year,” Helt continued. “The two made up one of our most successful doubles teams last year.” Together, Katten and Morque were 10-6 in doubles, putting them second on the team in wins only to Cohenca and Malloy. In singles, Katten registered his second straight campaign at .500 or better with a 14-14 record. He enters the year ranked 21st in doubles wins (33) and 28th in combined wins (64). Morque got off to a hot start with a 12-0 singles mark and titles at the Northeast Intercollegiate, UConn Invitational and Bucknell Invitational. He then played just three more singles matches all year but finished 13-12 in doubles, including 4-1 during the Patriot League regular season. Making up the sophomore class will be Kyle Rosen, Scott Bernstein and Chris Tortora. Rosen broke into the lineup last spring, eventually going 12-4 on the year. He teamed up exclusively with Bernstein in doubles, and the duo went 9-4, including two finals appearances and a title in the first tournaments of their career. Bernstein also made a pair of singles finals in his debut, winning the Northeast Intercollegiate. Tortora made his biggest impact during the fall season, finishing 7-5 in singles. “Kyle Rosen got to experience just how intense and exciting the Patriot League season can be. He settled into the No. 6 position last year where he dominated against Patriot League competition. “Chris Tortora and Scott Bernstein will be looking to get some playing time in the starting lineup this spring,” Helt added. “Both are expected to have a strong fall tournament schedule.” Bucknell will also benefit from newcomers sophomore Aidan Lynch and freshmen Roy Skinner and Octavio Canibe, particularly as they grow and mature into more experienced college players.

If ever there was a team that featured a new look, it would be Bucknell women’s tennis. Nine of the 12 players on the Bison’s 2011-12 roster are underclassmen. Lost to graduation is Lauren Lucido, who took over the program records in singles, doubles and combined victories last season. Despite an increasingly competitive Patriot League, the Orange and Blue knows what Elena Vidrascu it’s like to be at the top of the standings and will look to that experience to keep them there. Both of Bucknell’s seniors – Courtney Casey and Dumitrita Iepuras – have already inked their names in the program’s record books, and both will be relied on to continue their success while boosting up their teammates. “Courtney Casey will step up to help lead this young group as the captain this year,” said head coach Rebecca Helt, who is entering her 15th season at the helm for the Bison. “Both she and Demi Iepuras will most likely lead the lineup in singles and doubles after a successful winning season last year.” Casey finished her junior campaign with a 17-13 mark in singles, giving her a personal record for single-season victories. She ended the season on a high note by winning seven of her final 11 matches. The Rockville, Md., native also reached a milestone in doubles, achieving double-figure wins for the second consecutive year. At 11-16, she closed out the season at the No. 2 spot in the lineup with teammate Daria Tuzhikova. Iepuras enters her final season as the Bison’s winningest returning player and ranks eighth in program history in singles wins (61), 19th in doubles wins (35) and 10th in combined wins (96). Accustomed to being at the top of the lineup

– she played at No. 2 singles exclusively and finished last year at No. 1 doubles with Lucido – she will look to be the fourth Bison in three years to surpass the 100-victory mark. Bucknell will have to wait on its lone junior, Tuzhikova, who has made her mark in doubles since joining the team three years ago. Tuzhikova will spend the fall semester studying abroad in France, but the Bison expect her to work her way back into the lineup in the spring where she has already achieved a ranking of 20th on the career doubles wins list. Although just sophomores, Elena Vidrascu and Elizabeth Morgan are both on their way up. Vidrascu made quite the splash in her debut campaign, finishing 15-12 in singles and 15-15 in doubles. Her season began with a flight title at the Bucknell Invitational and ended with victories in eight of 12 singles matches. The Bison expect that trend to continue into the new campaign. The greater part of Morgan’s success so far has come during tournament action where she gathered all eight of her combined victories. “Elena also has the talent to impact the top half of the singles and doubles lineup,” Helt predicted. “Elizabeth Morgan will look to break into the starting lineup this spring. Both sophomores will see a lot of match play this fall.” “We’re looking forward to a long fall season with four tournaments,” said Helt. “The fall tournaments give coaches a chance to see most of the players in action and help establish future doubles teams and future lineups for the spring season.” Those fall tournaments will be especially valuable for the women’s squad as it welcomes seven freshmen in Kristen Bishof, Lauren Boone, Jen Bush, Lydia Colvin, Alyssa McAndrew, Christie Schneider and Claudia Silvers. As a unit, the rookies combined for nearly a dozen all-conference honors and multiple all-state selections during their high school careers. Helt sees them as a solid group capable of pushing each other to success and is eager to see their contributions to the team as the season progresses.

Additionally, current players Gregg Cohenca, Dumitrita Iepuras, Josh Katten and Evan Zimmer have earned All-Patriot League honors. Iepuras was also named the 2009 Patriot League Rookie of the Year. Last year, Lauren Lucido was a first-team All-PL choice, becoming only the second Bucknell player to earn first-team honors four times in her career. Also topping Helt’s list of multi-year selections are Tania Varela, Bucknell’s first four-year honoree, as well as Gamboa (2007, 2008, 2009), Curcic (2004, 2005) and Brown (2005, 2006). Reibeisen, who ranks second on Bucknell’s all-time wins list, earned three consecutive First Team All-Patriot League men’s honors, the first Bison to ever accomplish that feat. Helt also coached one all-league doubles team in Kerry Callaghan and Kristin Inglis. Callaghan was also an ITA Scholar-Athlete in 2000. Helt also had the opportunity to coach a Patriot League Sportsmanship Award winner, Asher Salam. In 2005, Curcic was named the first PL Player of the Year in the history of the program, while Varela claimed the same honor in 2010. A 1990 graduate of Lock Haven University, Helt earned a bachelor of arts degree in journalism while competing for the Lock Haven tennis team. Following her college graduation, Helt earned a teaching certification from the United States Professional Tennis Registry and began teaching part time while working for STEP, Inc., in its wilderness-based team building program. In 1994, Helt was hired as the assistant pro at West Branch Racquet Club in Williamsport, Pa. She continued her duties at West Branch while coaching the girls’ tennis team at Williamsport High School. Two years later, Helt was hired at the Doylestown Racquet Club in Doylestown, Pa. She has won three different raquetball state championships. Helt took over the women’s coaching reins at Bucknell in 1997, and in 2002 she was named the Bison men’s coach as well. Helt is also involved in tennis on the national level as an NCAA chair for women’s tennis. Helt continues her involvement in the game outside of Bucknell’s program, including receiving a generous grant from USTA to promote tennis in the local community. Helt also volunteers during the summer as a Special Olympics sport advisor, where she works with variRebecca Helt meets with Evan Zimmer ous events.

Assistant Head Coach First Season Christopher Newport ’06 Worth Richardson became the latest addition to the Bison tennis coaching staff, joining the team prior to the start of the 2011-12 season. Richardson came to Bucknell following a five-year run as the assistant men’s coach at Christopher Newport University. During his tenure as a coach at Division III Christopher Newport, Richardson and his teams received a number of accolades. The Captains earned four All-America honors, three USA South Player of the Year awards, and 18 All-Conference and 12 All-Conference Academic selections. In 2008, the squad earned its first-ever national ranking. The Captains remained among the country’s best throughout the next three years, achieving an all-time high of No. 17 in the polls. Richardson also earned the distinction of winning a USA South Conference Championship as both a player and a coach. A four-year starter for the Captains, his first title came as a senior in 2006, the same year he was named to the All-Conference and All-Tournament teams. After tying for first in the conference standings in 2007, his first season as an assistant coach, Richardson then led Christopher Newport to the outright championship a year later. A nominee for Assistant Coach of the Year in 2011, Richardson served as a tennis pro at the James River Country Club from 2006-08. In 2007, he accepted the USTA-Virginia Tennis Club of the Year Award. More recently, he was the head tennis pro at the Culpeper Sport and Racket Club. Richardson’s coaching experience also includes a turn with the James River Tennis Academy where he trained eight youth players ranked in the section’s top 10. Additionally, he worked with several topranked juniors as the head coach of the 2010 USTA Mid-Atlantic Boys and Girls 14u Zonals team in Dallas, Texas, and has served as the tournament director of the USTA Mid-Atlantic Boys 18u L2 Challenger and the assistant director of the Adidas Camp at Mary Washington. Richardson graduated from Christopher Newport with a degree in economics in 2006.

Tennis Alumni in Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame William C. Bartol (1887): William Bartol, a pioneer of baseball and tennis at Bucknell and head of the mathematics department for 46 years, is generally given credit for creating the nickname “Bisons” for Bucknell athletic teams. An outstanding student and athlete as an undergraduate, he also served as head of the engineering department and as director of the observatory. Bartol played on baseball teams that lost only one game in four years while helping raise funds in support of the Athletic Association. About 1910, he suggested that the nickname “Bisons” be adopted for Bucknell teams because of the proximity of the campus to areas populated by the American bison in the late 1700s. Bartol, who died in 1940 at the age of 92, was connected with Bucknell longer than any other person in its history as a student, teacher and university historian. Bartol entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1987.

Steve Baird

Malcolm E. Musser (’18): A basketball and tennis player as an undergraduate and later varsity basketball coach and freshman football and baseball coach, Musser probably coached, taught and watched more Bucknell athletes than any other person. Musser entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1979. Thomas A. Thompson (’60): A three-year starter in baseball and basketball and captain of both teams, Thompson pitched in the Detroit Tigers system and has coached baseball, basketball, golf and tennis teams at Bucknell. Thompson entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1986.

Malcolm Musser

Alexander Anderson (’71): A three-year letterman in tennis and captain his senior year. Anderson had a career singles record of 38-2. He continues to hold the school record for consecutive match victories at 33, and is third in career singles match winning percentage at .950. Anderson entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1999. Stephen W. Baird (’72): The 1971 MAC fall tennis champion, Baird was an Eastern singles semifinalist and doubles finalist in 1972 and had a career 38-1 singles record. President of the American Platform Tennis Association, Baird is a five-time national champion in the sport. Baird entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1983.

Ed Hess

Alexander Anderson

Marjorie A. Deck (’73): Co-captain of the field hockey and basketball teams, Deck was also undefeated in tennis dual matches in her career and ranked fifth in the East as a senior. Deck is often referred to as one of the pioneers of women’s tennis at Bucknell having played on the team before women’s sports gained varsity status in the fall of 1973. Women’s tennis was given varsity status only months after Deck’s graduation. Her success on the club team had much to do with the upgrade of women’s tennis to varsity status. Deck entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1989. Ed Hess (’90): One of the best tennis players in Bucknell history, Hess held the school record for singles victories at 60 until the fall of 2007, while accumulating only three singles losses during his career. He stands eighth on the singles-doubles combined win list at 101 and is 13th on Bucknell’s all-time doubles victories list. Hess won the East Coast Conference singles title in 1987, 1989 and 1990, in addition to two conference doubles titles. His teams won three ECC team championships, posting a 38-12 record in those seasons. Hess entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2003. Rose Ewan: One of Bucknell’s leading promoters of women’s athletics, Ewan was involved with Bison Athletics in various capacities for 25 years. As head women’s tennis coach for 18 years (1979-97), she compiled a 183-120-1 dual-match record and led the Bison to Patriot League championships in 1992 and 1994. Ewan also was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year following both championship seasons. From September 1991 to October 1992 the team won a school-record 25 straight matches. The 1991-92 team finished 16-1 and was part of a five-year stretch in which it went 64-9. Upon arriving at Bucknell in 1978, Ewan served as head coach of the field hockey and women’s lacrosse teams for one year, coordinator of women’s athletics in 1980, associate director of athletics in 1990 and eventually associate athletic director for recreation services prior to her retirement. Most importantly, Ewan successfully guided women’s athletics at Bucknell through a difficult transition period, including the merger of the men’s and women’s athletic departments. Ewan will enter the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2010.

Patriot League Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 23 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown and MIT as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League finished at the top spot with nearly all of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 82 teams from Patriot League fullmember institutions earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the 2010-11 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams accomplished the following: *Patriot League schools came in with glowing marks in the latest release of the NCAA Academic Progress Rate, as 97 percent of Patriot League teams came in at or above the national Division I four-year average score of 970. *Bucknell claimed the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup for the 17th time overall and sixth consecutive season. The Bison also won their eighth male trophy and 17th female award, sweeping the honors for the second straight year and seventh time overall. *Six different schools claimed multiple Patriot League titles, led by Navy with seven and Bucknell with six. Lehigh and Army each won three championships while Colgate and American claimed a pair. *Bucknell’s Travis Nissley was named a finalist for the Campbell Trophy and earned an $18,000 post-graduate scholarship from the National Football Foundation. *Navy tennis standout Nick Birger was part of a select group of studentathletes to receive a $7,500 postgraduate scholarship from the NCAA. *11 student-athletes have been named Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, including: Erin Anthony, Army (Women’s Basketball); Nathan Hedgecock, Army (Men’s Basketball); Travis Nissley, Bucknell (Football); Sam Miller and Alex Foskett, Navy (Men’s Soccer); Ben Koenigsfeld, Army (Baseball); Jay Laing, Army and Jonathan Stumpf, Lehigh (Men’s Lacrosse); Nick Birger, Navy (Men’s Tennis); Alyssa DeLorenz, Bucknell (Women’s Lacrosse) and Cody Rome, Navy (Men’s Track and Field) *55 Patriot League student-athletes have earned Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District honors, with 39 on the first team. *Candidates for Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award included: Erin Anthony, Army (Women’s Basketball); Stefan Bauer, Lafayette (Men’s Lacrosse); Jonathan Stumpf, Lehigh (Men’s Lacrosse); Rob Keefer, Lehigh (Men’s Basketball); Andrew Keister, Holy Cross (Men’s Basketball); Erica Prosser, Lehigh (Women’s Basketball); Ben Koenigsfeld, Army (Baseball); Friederike Engel, American (Women’s Soccer) and Jessie Snyder, Bucknell (Softball). *Army’s Erin Anthony concluded an outstanding career with First-Team Academic All-America recognition for the second year in a row and a nomination from the Patriot League for the NCAA Woman of the Year award. *American’s Christine Fingerhuth was named a first-team All-America selection in field hockey and also received an NCAA Woman of the Year nomination from the Patriot League. *Colgate’s Nate Eachus finished sixth in the voting for the Walter Payton Award, given to the Most Outstanding Player in the Football Championship Subdivision. *Lehigh’s Will Rackley became the highest-ever NFL Draft selection out of the Patriot League when he was picked in the third round by the Jacksonville Jaguars. *Lehigh became the first Patriot League team since 2003 to win a game

in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision playoffs when it won at Northern Iowa, 14-7, in the first round. The Mountain Hawks finished at No. 14 in each of the major FCS rankings, matching the highest for a Patriot League team since 2003. *Army’s Jeremy Boltus was one of five finalists for the Tewaarton Trophy, given to the top men’s lacrosse player. *Bucknell and Colgate each finished in the top 15 of the final Nike/Inside Lacrosse poll, with the Bison at No. 9 and the Raiders coming in at No. 14. *Lehigh’s Lauren Dykstra capped an amazing career as a women’s lacrosse All-American and MVP of the IWLCA North-South Senior All-Star Game, as well as the Patriot League Female Sportsmanship Award winner. *Sophomores C.J. McCollum (Lehigh) and Mike Muscala (Bucknell) each received postseason All-America recognition following strong men’s basketball seasons. *Three Patriot Leaguers competed at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, with Bucknell’s Ted Heitzman and Army’s Domonick Sylve giving the League a pair of All-America recipients for the first time since 2003. *The Navy trio of Olaf Olson, Mark Meyer and Justin Vagts all competed at the NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship. *A Patriot League record four runners went to the NCAA Cross Country Championships, with Colgate’s Elise DeRoo earning a top-100 finish in the women’s race. *Four Patriot League baseball players were selected in the MLB First-Year Player Draft, including Holy Cross pitcher John Pedrotty in the 13th round.

The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek. Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of studentathletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell. The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleges. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, reflects positively upon Bucknell’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell. A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Department subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA.

The Plan for Bucknell Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other, where 3,350 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For 160 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world. In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.” The Plan comprises five strategies. Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell education is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation; Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a residential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility; Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world; Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research; Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our financial future. The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun implementing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade. Bucknell Varsity Tennis Courts

The Kenneth Langone Athletics & Recreation Center The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 17 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 21 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 120 Academic All-Americans in 41 years and 122 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 21 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholarathlete model. The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success. The facility enhances each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and greatly expands the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni. Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a brand new display highlighting Bucknell’s all-time Academic All-Americans, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes. The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996. One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison wrestling and volleyball teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities. As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its newly installed FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club and new indoor instructional facility; Depew Field, the home of the Bison baseball team; the Becker Field softball diamond; and Emmitt Field and Graham Field at Holmes Stadium, the new portion of the West Fields project that includes covered grandstand seats, ticket and concession areas, team rooms, a training room and a press box area for soccer, field hockey and women’s lacrosse.
