Athletics Mission Statement The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University. Bucknell Bison Athletics Setting the Standard of Excellence

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal. •

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates twice in the last 10 years, and it ranked No. 2 in the 2008 study. In the most recent survey in the fall of 2009, Bucknell ranked No. 8 in the nation.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 120 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

A total of 379 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2009-10 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 257 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring of 2010.

In addition to the 119 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 300 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including a school-record 22 in 2008-09 and 17 more in 2009-10.

With a school-record-tying eight Patriot League championships in 200910, Bucknell has now earned 81 crowns in 20 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 109 conference players of the year, 89 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 491 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

25 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2010.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 16 times in the 20-year history of the affiliation, including 12 of the last 13 years. Bucknell claimed the overall, men’s and women’s Cup titles in 2009-10. It was the 13th straight year and the 16th time overall that the Bison took home the women’s title. In 2009-10, Bucknell won Patriot League titles in women’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s indoor track & field, women’s outdoor track & field, men’s outdoor track & field, women’s rowing, baseball and softball. Additionally, the women’s water polo team captured the CWPA Southern Division championship, and the wrestling team sent four student-athletes to the NCAA Championships and produced two All-Americans.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of ESPN The Magazine All-America selections with 119.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

Bucknell Bison Athletics

A National Model in Promoting the Scholar-Athlete Ideal Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national model when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place. FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally. SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena. ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice. LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips. STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total studentathlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body. OTHER PROGRAMMING: The Department of Athletics, through the identification of outside speakers and periodic “Brown Bag Luncheons,” thrives to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience as well as to educate student-athletes on a variety of issues that may affect them throughout their collegiate career. Some recent topics of interest have been alcohol, nutrition, body image, hazing, sexuality, diversity, career development, study skills, religious life and gambling.

Season Outlook Teams in all sports hope to build off their previous season when looking toward a new one, but few squads are starting in a better position than 2011 Bucknell softball. The Bison enter the new campaign just months removed from their second-ever Patriot League Championship and the first NCAA Tournament appearance in program history. Even with the success, the Orange and Blue will not be resting on their laurels. “We’re looking to come back and be as strong as we finished last year,” said head coach Heather Rakosik, who is heading into her seventh season with the Bison. “We have a really good core of upperclassmen returning, and are confident that the freshmen can step in and fill the spots of some graduated players. “We have proved that we can win a league championship, but we want to prove that we can do it more than once and that we can do it consistently,” Rakosik continued. “This is a brand new year, and we’re looking to continue to make a name for ourselves.” Bucknell will rely on veteran leadership, including senior captains Alison Ford, Lauren Fry, Sam Rollandi and Jessie Snyder, to help build the Bison name. With nine of its 22 roster spots this spring going to upperclassmen, Bucknell has plenty of experience to call on as it vies for a repeat of one of the most successful seasons in program history. Last season Bucknell tied the school record in wins with a record of 28-20-1; set new program high marks in runs scored (249), doubles (75) and RBI (219); and broke into the top five in games played (49), batting average (.310), hits (403), home runs (20), triples (24), walks drawn (138) and strikeouts for the pitching staff (197). Rakosik hopes to have that offense in full swing when competition officially gets underway at the Coastal Carolina Kickin’ Chicken Classic Feb. 18-20. “We’re really looking to put some runs up on the board. Obviously that’s what it’s going to take to win games and give our pitchers some additional confidence. We definitely have a mix of short game, power and singles hitters that should give our opponents different looks every batter.” Bucknell will have to wait until its March 30 doubleheader vs. Drexel for its first competition on its revamped field. Renamed Becker Field this winter, the Bison’s home now includes new dugouts and backstop, a state-of-the-art scoreboard, new playing surface and double turf batting cage. PITCHING – Bucknell’s pitching rotation has a wealth of experience that belies its youth. Sophomore Alex MacLean was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Year, Second Team All-League and the Patriot League Tournament MVP on her way to posting a team-best 13-6 record and 2.76 ERA. Classmate Bridget Gates made an equally huge splash during her debut campaign with a 12-6 record and 3.05 ERA. She was also twice a Patriot League Rookie of the Week. “We’re definitely looking for them to improve on their freshman year,” said Rakosik of MacLean and Gates. “It’s a career, not a season. For us, we’re looking for them to improve year in and year out, to reinvent themselves. Our pitching coach, Sam Kszepka, is pushing them every day to make that happen, and I feel like if we stay on course, then they can continue to be a great duo.” Filling out the pitching rotation will be freshman left-hander Courtney Conover. CATCHING – Bucknell has a quartet behind the plate in Elyse Colmenero, Kara Sullivan, Alicia Wheeler and Meredith Dickson. A two-time First Team All-Patriot League selection, Colmenero was the Bison’s go-to player at catcher last season, making nearly all of her 35 starts at the position. Fellow senior Kara Sullivan saw her game-day action increase last year, and Rakosik expects that trend to continue into the new season. “She’s a great communicator and has improved immensely over her career,” praised Rakosik. Juniors Wheeler and Dickson continue to make strides and create a niche for themselves behind the plate as well. FIRST BASE – The Bison will have a number of options at first base this year, among them senior Ford, who made 30 starts on the right half of the infield last season. A former All-Patriot League selection as a utility player, however, Ford will also be called on to fill a number of different roles. Expect newcomers Conover and Sophia Geraci to also play an integral part in the Orange and Blue’s infield in 2011 as well. “We do have a couple of freshmen in Courtney Conover and Sophia Geraci that we’re really hoping can step in and help the team defensively as well as at the plate,”

said Rakosik. “We have options, but we’re going to have to look at the schematics of what’s going to give us the best offensive lineup and give us that solid defense that we’re looking for.” SECOND BASE – Second base is another position in which Bucknell returns an all-league performer. Now a senior, Snyder earned first-team accolades a year ago, adding to her ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District citation for her work in the classroom. Snyder started 46 of her 47 games at second base and led the Patriot League in assists. “She is a very versatile player that can play almost anywhere, so that’s a good thing,” Rakosik said of Snyder, who also spent time at shortstop last season and started regularly at the position as a freshman. “She’s shown that she’s a top-notch second baseman and a consummate leader on the field.” Adding depth at the position are Mary Horton, Laura Sandford and Caryn Connors. Horton saw most of her game-day action last season as the designated player, showing off her strong left-handed bat. Sandford, who spent most of her time as a pinch runner a year ago, has used the offseason to put her more in the mix at second base in 2011. “Laura Sandford has improved leaps and bounds and is working harder every day,” said Rakosik. “It’s definitely paying off for her and the team.” THIRD BASE – Used to splitting her time between first and third base, Ford should continue to get a good amount of time at the hot corner, especially following the graduation of Mary Pavlovich. Ford earned just nine of her 42 starts at third base last season, but the senior co-captain was a First Team All-Patriot League selection as a utility player during her sophomore campaign, showing off her versatility. “Right now we’re really leaning on Alison Ford to be a leader on the hot corner. She’s somebody who’s proven herself,” said Rakosik. “She’s a very good leader on and off the field and a very steady competitor.” Up and coming at the position is freshman Kasey Segiel, who will provide some depth behind Ford. “Kasey Segiel is an extremely hard worker. Every day she gets better and does great things in practice,” lauded Rakosik. “I think she’ll be able to help the team a lot in that position.” SHORTSTOP – Bucknell will have to replace another stalwart at shortstop having graduated Alyssa Okita, but the Bison have plenty of options to do so. Freshman Mallory Lyons, who was a first team all-area selection in high school, will be called upon early in her career to meet the team’s needs. “She’s very capable, and she has a phenomenal arm,” Rakosik said of Lyons, one of the Bison’s seven newcomers this season. “She just needs to continue to mature as a player, but she has all the tools and we’re pushing her every day to be the best shortstop for our team and in the league.” Snyder and Horton also have more than enough experience in the middle infield and should help solidify the shortstop position for Bucknell. OUTFIELD – The Orange and Blue’s outfield will show a mix of old and new in 2011. Seniors Lauren Fry and Sam Rollandi provide the experience for the team, while sophomores Cassie Greenhawk and Kathryn Wilkinson, and freshmen Brooke Forgetta, Conover and Julia Bonnell should keep things fresh. Few have proved their success in the outfield more than Fry, a two-time AllPatriot League first teamer who added Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Region and Patriot League All-Tournament to her resume last spring. In the field, she made all 48 of her starts in center, while offensively, she set Bucknell’s single-season walks record (31) and took over a top-three ranking in single-season runs (42) and hits (55) in the program record books. Heading into her final season in the Orange and Blue, Fry will also look to move up the career top-10 lists in runs, where she ranks fifth with 93, as well as in doubles, where she is ninth with 28. Flanking Fry is Rollandi, who drew all 10 of her starts last season in right field. Although she has found her niche in right, Rollandi has proved herself in a number of other roles as well. As a second-year captain, her leadership has proved invaluable to the Bison, and her ability to enter the game as a pinch hitter or a pinch runner has provided Bucknell with even more threats to opponents. “She’s proven that she really is most comfortable in right field but can handle being moved around a little bit,” said Rakosik of her veteran. “She’s just a player that has crafted herself into a very good outfielder.” Greenhawk used her speed to make a name for herself last season, spending much of her game time as a pinch runner. That quickness should translate into added success in the outfield. Joining her is Wilkinson, who is back in action after a knee injury ended her 2010 season prematurely. “She’s the type of player that will work and work, and she had one of the best arms on the team and still does,” said Rakosik. “We’re looking for her to come in and give us some options for the outfield to make some things happen.” When not playing other positions, Conover will also fill in in the outfield, as will Bonnell, who brings speed to the position.

Heather Rakosik was hired as the fourth head coach in the history of the Bucknell softball program in 2004 and enters her seventh season at the helm in 2011. When hired, Rakosik had just finished leading Ohio Wesleyan to a recordsetting season. Led by three all-region performers and the first All-American in program history, the Battling Bishops won a school-record 28 games and captured the North Coast Athletic Conference regular season title for the first time. In three seasons as head coach at OWU, Rakosik’s teams improved their record every year, and she compiled a 60-54-1 overall ledger. A native of Toledo, Ohio, Rakosik led the 2008 Bison to their first tournament in three years on her way to being named the Patriot League Coach of the Year. The tournament appearance came on the heels of close calls in 2006 and 2007 when Bucknell entered the final weekend of regular-season play in playoff contention but fell just short. The 2010 squad earned Bucknell’s third consecutive postseason appearance and was Rakosik’s fourth Patriot League Tournament contender. After guiding the Bison to their second Patriot League Championship trophy, Rakosik led the 2010 team to the program’s first-ever NCAA Championships appearance and a trip to the Columbus, Ohio, Region with California, Ohio State and Kentucky. With a 28-20-1 record at the season’s end, Rakosik’s squad also tied the Bucknell record for most wins in a season. After taking over a Bucknell team that went 14-26 overall and 8-12 in the Patriot League in 2004, she helped the Bison increase their win total to 16 in her first season as they qualified for the Patriot League Tournament for the second

consecutive year after enduring a three-year hiatus from the postseason. That year Rakosik helped tutor Lauren Wible to a .524 batting average, which led the nation. The last several years Rakosik has expanded the team’s schedule to nearly 50 games in hopes of preparing the team better for Patriot League play. Additionally, she has had the squad begin the season in mid-February, rather than mid-March, as had been the case before her arrival. In addition to her duties as head softball coach at Ohio Wesleyan, Rakosik also served as an instructor in the physical education department as well as assistant women’s basketball coach. She helped guide the team to a winning record in each of her three seasons, highlighted by an NCAC championship and NCAA “Sweet Sixteen” appearance in 2002. Prior to her tenure at Ohio Wesleyan, Rakosik served as head softball coach and assistant women’s basketball coach at Hiram College. There, she led the diamond squad to its best overall record in 11 years. Rakosik is a 1998 graduate of Muskingum University in New Concord, Ohio. She graduated cum laude with a degree in health and physical education, as well as a K-12 teaching certificate. She also gained valuable athletics experience working as an assistant in the sports information office as well as with the women’s athletic director. As a student-athlete, Rakosik starred in both basketball and softball. On the hardwood she was a 1,000-point scorer (1,378) who broke school records for points (37) and 3-pointers (8) made in a game. She was a First Team All-Ohio Athletic Conference selection in softball and the recipient of the OAC Clyde A. Lamb Scholar-Athlete Award. Her stellar career with the Muskies recently led to her induction into the Muskingum Athletic Hall of Fame in the fall of 2009. Rakosik went on to earn a master’s degree in education from Defiance (Ohio) College in 2000. While at Defiance, Rakosik also served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator with the women’s basketball program, helping to guide the team to a 22-5 record and a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association title. As the head junior varsity coach, she led her team to a 14-3 record. At Bucknell, Rakosik has won more than 100 games in her first six seasons and in 2008 passed Janelle Breneman for second place on the Bison career wins list. During her first six years at the helm of the Bison, Rakosik has tutored nine different players to First Team All-Patriot League plaudits, including two-time selections Lauren Litts, Lauren Wible, Elyse Colmenero and Lauren Fry. Additionally, eight other players have earned Second Team All-Patriot League honors and two more have been named the Patriot League Rookie of the Year.

Coaching Staff Samantha Kszepka Assistant Coach Third Season William Paterson ’04

Samantha Kszepka, a former All-American player at William Paterson University, was named an assistant softball coach at Bucknell in July 2008. Kszepka works closely with the Bucknell pitchers and is an integral part of the Bison recruiting effort. In her second year with the program, Kszepka helped guide current Bison pitcher Alex MacLean to Patriot League Rookie of the Year and Patriot League Tournament MVP honors. Kszepka, a highly decorated player during her college career, was a Third Team All-America selection as a utility player in 2002. She was also the New Jersey Athletic Conference and ECAC Player of the Year the same season when she hit a team-best .463 with three home runs and 30 runs batted in and posted a 13-4 record with a miniscule 0.86 ERA. After a 9-1 mark in the circle as a senior in 2003, Kszepka finished her career 36-10 with a 1.50 ERA. A 2004 graduate of William Paterson with a bachelor’s degree in exercise and movement science, Kszepka broke into coaching at the high school level in 2006 when she was an assistant softball coach at Willingboro High School in New Jersey. The New Egypt, N.J., native also taught health and physical education at Willingboro for two years. Kszepka made the jump to the college level in 2007 when she joined the softball staff at nearby Susquehanna University and helped lead the squad to a solid 16-12 mark. While with the Crusaders she directed workouts for the pitchers, assisted with recruiting and implemented the winter workout and conditioning program. A year later Kszepka moved to Division I Norfolk State as an assistant. There, she was the recruiting coordinator and was in charge of workouts for pitchers, catchers and the outfield for a team that posted 23 victories.

Katie McConville Assistant Coach First Season Mansfield ’09

A recent graduate of Mansfield University, Katie McConville became the newest member the Bucknell coaching staff when she joined the team prior to the 2011 season. McConville was a four-year student-athlete with Mansfield softball. She also served as a Student Advisory Committee representative and as team captain during her senior campaign with the Mounties. Off the field, the Lake Ariel, Pa., native earned her bachelor’s degree in mass communications and public relations and minored in history. McConville also served as a representative with the university’s orientation program, giving campus tours and organizing information sessions for students. McConville has developed experience in diverse camp settings over the last several years. Most recently she worked as the Pool & Aquatics Manager at Brier Creek Country Club in Raleigh, N.C., and was an intern with the Clemson University Adventure Camp. While at Clemson, McConville taught wilderness safety and ethics as well as served as an instructor in activities such as mountain biking, canoeing, hiking, rock climbing and rafting. Previously, she was a counselor with the New York State Sheriffs’ Associations Summer Camp. Working in conjuction with D.A.R.E. and the New York State Sheriffs’ Department, McConville taught team sports to underprivileged children and educated them on the dangers of drugs and alcohol.

Sandra Mowery

Volunteer Assistant Coach Fourth Season Ohio Wesleyan ’04 Sandra Mowery, a former student-athlete at Ohio Wesleyan under current Bison head coach Heather Rakosik, is in her fourth year as an assistant coach with the Bison. Mowery began her tenure as a graduate assistant coach and is now in her second season as a volunteer assistant. Mowery, a native of Euclid, Ohio, was a four-year letterwinner on the Ohio Wesleyan softball team from 2001-04, the last three with Rakosik as her mentor. She served as team captain her senior year, was named First Team All-North Coast Athletic Conference and helped the team to a share of a conference title before graduating with a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education in 2004. Following graduation, Mowery was a permanent building substitute teacher at Thomas Jefferson Magnet School, an employee of the Euclid Board of Education and a private tutor for thirdand fifth-grade students in subjects ranging from math and science to spelling. In addition to her many experiences in school settings, Mowery spent nearly a decade working for Euclid Parks and Recreation in various roles, including as a sports camp counselor. In 2007, Mowery got her start coaching at the high school level when she served as Euclid High School’s junior varsity softball coach. Mowery recently completed her master’s degree in counseling at Bucknell.

1997 Team Reunion During the April 14, 2007 doubleheader with Lehigh, the Bucknell softball team recognized the 10-year anniversary of the first Patriot League title in program history. The following former softball players have been inducted into Bucknell’s Athletic Hall of Fame: Lisa Fink (’93): One of Bucknell’s top female athletes and arguably the top softball player in school history, Fink was also a star on the basketball court for the Bison. A four-time all-league selection in softball, Fink batted .440 during her senior year and earned Patriot League Player of the Year and First Team Academic All-America honors. Fink owned a .378 career batting average and never hit below .344 in her four-year career. The rare first-ballot Hall of Famer was an NCAA Woman of the Year nominee in 1993. Entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2003. Sharon Nichols (’91): The most dominating softball pitcher to ever wear the Orange and Blue, Nichols graduated with every pitching record, and to this day she still holds eight Bucknell marks including three career records. A perennial all-conference selection, she posted a 0.83 career earned run average, notched 332 strikeouts and had 51 victories in the circle. During her career she threw four no-hitters and a perfect game, and in 1991 she compiled a streak of 59.2 innings without allowing an earned run. As a senior, Nichols ranked sixth nationally with a 0.38 ERA and compiled a 16-6 mark with eight shutouts. Entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2001.

Dawn Becker (’85): An outstanding pitcher, Becker compiled one of the most impressive careers in Bucknell softball history. Becker set numerous Bucknell softball pitching records and was a two-time East Coast Conference Dawn Becker Scholar-Athlete and Second Team Academic All-American. Entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1997. Stacey Spitko (’88): An outstanding basketball and softball player, Spitko started every basketball game and all but two softball games in her career. En route, she set school records and earned Academic All-America honors in both sports. Entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1995.

Jen Yuengling (’93): Considered one of the best catchers and leadoff hitters in the history of the Bucknell softball program, Yuengling’s .332 career average ranks ninth all-time. She also broke school records for career walks (66) and recorded the longest hitting streak (20) in program history. Yuengling was named to the All-East Coast Conference Team in 1990 and to the All-Patriot League squad in 1993. She was later named to the Patriot League All-Decade Team. Entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2009.

Lynne Walshaw (’89): A four-year starter and All-East Coast Conference selection, Walshaw graduated Bucknell holding 14 school records. Of those 14 records, her .702 slugging percentage was still tops on the Bucknell singleseason list when entering Hall of Fame. Entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2000. Dianne Czarnecki (’87): A four-year letterwinner and All-East Coast Conference selection in both field hockey and softball, Czarnecki also picked up all-region honors on the diamond her senior season. Entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1999.

Jill Henry (’81): A three-sport captain in field hockey, basketball and softball, Henry-Feeney set game and season scoring records in basketball and was twice named to the Academic All-America College Division Team. Entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1993.

In 2005, Bucknell’s Lauren Wible hit .524 to lead the nation and break Bucknell and Patriot League records. The Dover, Pa., native was named the Patriot League Player of the Year, became the first Bison since 1999 to earn a spot on the All-Mid Atlantic Region First Team and copped Academic All-America honors. She also earned plaudits as the Patriot League Softball and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Wible completed the 2005 campaign second nationally in doubles per game (0.39), third in slugging percentage (.903) and 21st in walks per game (0.63).

The Bucknell University Department of Athletics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 16 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 20 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 119 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans in 39 years and 120 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 20 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholar-athlete model. The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success. The facility enhances each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and greatly expands the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni. Three primary venues lie within the KLARC Front Entrance facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a new display highlighting Bucknell’s all-time Academic All-Americans, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes. The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996. One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison wrestling and volleyball teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities. As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club; Depew Field, the home of the Bison baseball team; the spacious West Fields with Becker Field for softball, Emmitt Field KLARC Lobby for soccer and Graham Field for field hockey, including Holmes Stadium with covered grandstand seats, ticket and concession areas, team rooms, a training room and a press box area for soccer, field hockey and women’s lacrosse.

Located on the west side of Route 15, Bucknell’s Becker Field Field is the home venue for the Bison softball team. Adjacent to baseball’s Depew Field, the softball field is a fenced complex that contains a natural grass outfield with a manicured infield. The facility, named in honor of Hall of Famer Dawn Becker’s parents, underwent extensive renovations at the conclusion of the 2010 campaign and included new dugouts, scoreboard, backstop and playing surface. Bucknell owns a 213-199-4 (.517) all-time record on its home field. The Bison went 8-5-1 in 2010. Patriot League Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 23 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an allsport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown and MIT as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have, and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League finished at the top spot with 96 percent of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 90 Patriot League teams earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The Patriot League’s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its studentathletes to be leaders in society. During the 2009-10 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams have accomplished the following: • 11 Patriot League student-athletes earned CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors, with Army’s Andrew Maisano (Men’s Lacrosse), Erin Anthony (Women’s Basketball) and Elizabeth Betterbed (Women’s Soccer), Navy’s Beth Reed (Women’s Soccer), Alex Buck (Men’s Swimming and Diving) and Mark Van Orden (Track and Field) and Bucknell’s Patrick Selwood (Men’s Soccer) receiving First-Team Academic All-America recognition. • 50 Patriot League student-athletes received CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors. • The Patriot League placed second among all Division I conferences with 90 teams receiving NCAA Public Recognition Awards for their performance in the classroom. • Navy’s Beth Reed and Mark Van Orden received NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships. • Reed was also named the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Women’s Soccer Academic All-American of the Year, and won the Patriot League Female ScholarAthlete of the Year Award. • Army’s Andrew Maisano won the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award for Men’s Lacrosse, and earned the Patriot League Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. • Army’s Elizabeth Betterbed was selected as a Rhodes Scholar. • Holy Cross’ Olivia Pruszko earned a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship. • Fordham’s John Skelton became the first Patriot League player taken in the NFL Draft since 1995. • Lehigh’s C.J. McCollum was named the ECAC Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Year and received multiple national freshman honors. • Navy’s Adam Meyer was named the Mid-Major Swimmer of the Year by CollegeSwimming.com, and received Honorable Mention All-America honors at the NCAA Championship Meet. • Bucknell won the 2010 Patriot League Presidents’ Cup. The Bison also won the male and female trophies. It was the eighth time in Patriot League history that a school won the overall, male and female titles. • Every Patriot League team won at least one championship for just the fifth time in League history. • Army Men’s Lacrosse defeated No. 2 Syracuse, 9-8, in double overtime in the NCAA Tournament first round. • Bucknell defeated Princeton in the first round of the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament. • Three Patriot Leaguers were selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, while a pair were chosen in the Major Lacrosse League Draft. • Army’s Garret Thul was named national freshman of the year by Inside Lacrosse.

2010 PL Champs & NCAA Qualifiers Bucknell softball won the 2010 Patriot League Championship on May 15, twice coming from behind to defeat Colgate 4-3 (9 inn.) and 6-4 on the final day of play at West Point, N.Y. The championship was the second in program history and the first since 1997.

With its Patriot League Tournament success, Bucknell advanced to its first-ever NCAA Championships. In the Columbus, Ohio Regional on May 2122, the Bison took on nationally ranked California and the host Ohio State.

The Presidents’ Cup The Presidents’ Cup signifies overall excellence in the 23 sports sponsored by the Patriot League, and Bucknell has won the Cup 16 times in its 20-year existence, including 12 of the last 13 years. The Presidents’ Cup is awarded annually to the institution that accumulates the highest point total over the entire academic year, with points awarded on the basis of the school’s finish in each of the 23 Patriot League sports. If there is a league tournament in a sport, the points are awarded based on the average of the regular season and tournament finish, and if there is no post-season tournament, points are awarded based on regular-season standings.

Contacts As per NCAA by-law 13.02.3, a contact is any face-to-face encounter between a prospect or the prospect’s parent or legal guardian and an institutional staff member or athletics representative during which any dialogue occurs in excess of an exchange of a greeting. Any such face-to-face encounter that is prearranged or takes place on the grounds of the prospect’s high school, or at the site of organized competition or practice involving the prospect’s high school, preparatory school, two-year college, or all-star team is considered a contact, regardless of the conversation that occurs. We are limited to three off-campus contact days per prospective student-athlete. A simple letter of inquiry into the softball program or an email to hrakosik@bucknell.edu will initiate the recruiting process. In the spring of your sophomore year or early junior year is the most appropriate time to contact Coach Rakosik.
