Bucknell Bison Athletics Setting the Standard of Excellence Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to graduation rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal.

25 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2011.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 17 times in the 21-year history of the affiliation, including 13 of the last 14 years. Bucknell claimed the overall, men’s and women’s Cup titles in 2010-11. It was the 14th straight year and the 17th time overall that the Bison took home the women’s title. In 2010-11, Bucknell won Patriot League titles in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, men’s lacrosse, women’s rowing and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field.

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates twice in the last 11 years, and it ranked No. 2 in the 2008 study. In the most recent survey in the fall of 2010, Bucknell ranked No. 7 in the nation.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 121 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of Capital One Academic All-America selections with 120.

A total of 421 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in 2010-11 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 259 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring of 2011.

In addition to the 121 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 314 Academic All-District honorees over the same span, including a school-record 22 in 2008-09 and 21 more in 2010-11.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excellence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olympic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

With six Patriot League championships in 2010-11, Bucknell has now earned 87 crowns in 21 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 113 conference players of the year, 93 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 511 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

Bucknell Bison Athletics A National Model in Promoting the Scholar-Athlete Ideal Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model.

At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place.

FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by promoting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally.

SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is introduced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena.

ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice.

LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body.

BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. As part of a Patriot League-wide leadership initiative, this “Leadership Summit” is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy programming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come.

Bucknell’s streak of winning a Patriot League title in three consecutive seasons unfortunately came to an end last year. With seven regular starters returning to the lineup and one-half of the weekend starting rotation back in Orange and Blue for another year, Bison 31st-year head coach Gene Depew has his sights set on beginning a new streak and competing for the program’s sixth Patriot League postseason crown and NCAA berth.

“As always, we want to be in position to contend in the Patriot League, earn a tournament berth and have the opportunity to go back to the NCAA Regionals,” said Depew, who will reach 600 career victories if Bucknell can post its fourth 30-win campaign under his watch.

One year ago Depew was trying to recover from losing the top four bats in a record-breaking lineup. This season Depew needs to only replace two hitters, but the graduation of Drew Constable and Doug Shribman leaves a gap in a still-potent lineup. Shribman graduated with his name listed in the top 10 in program history in 14 offensive categories, including No. 1 in home runs (43), while Constable was a career .314 hitter who never made an error in his Bison career.

“Those two guys are going to be difficult to replace, but we certainly have people in those positions that are quality players,” commented Depew about the loss of Constable and Shribman. “I think the experienced group we have is going to be a good situation. It shouldn’t take us quite as long into the season to be playing at the level we expect.”

Depew thinks this year’s Bison squad will be a very balanced ball club, mainly due to experience. In fact, 18 current players were part of the 2010 team that captured the Patriot League title and played in the NCAA Tournament.

PITCHING STAFF: Depew and eighth-year pitching coach Scott Heather have a talented 14-person staff that is headlined by senior left-hander Ryan Ebner, the 2011 Patriot League Pitcher of the Year. Ebner helped Bucknell to a 10-1 record in his 11 starts and he posted a stellar 1.97 ERA over his final 64.0 innings pitched to become the first Bison honored as PL Pitcher of the Year since 2003.

“Ryan was solid last year and had a very good fall,” said Depew about the 6’7” hurler who had a 22.0 scoreless innings streak in 2011. “He is poised to repeat his performance and be the leader of our staff.”

Senior right-hander Jack Boehm is the other holdover from last year’s weekend starting staff. The Illinois native has logged more than 100 innings the last two years and has a 7-6 record over that span. Boehm has excellent control and ranks fifth in program history in fewest walks per nine innings (2.39).

The Bison, who returned all four weekend starters a year ago, must replace the graduated Trey Frahler and Dylan Seeley, who were both part of the rotation for three years. That duo registered nearly 500 innings between them over the last four years.

Depew, who has plenty of confidence in his entire pitching staff, sees a number of possibilities for the third and fourth starter positions. Juniors Marcus Garone, Dan Goldstein and Taylor Runge, as well as sophomore Dan Weigel and freshman Bryson Hough, seem to be the frontrunners.

A mid-week starter the past two years, Garone has the most experience beginning games on the mound with six career starting assignments.

After pitching just 4.1 innings as a freshman in 2010, Goldstein posted a strong 3.71 ERA in 17.1 innings last spring. He walked just two hitters in his final nine innings and earned victories over Army and Towson.

“Marcus has done whatever we have needed and will figure prominently in our plans, while Dan is coming off a very good fall and is one of the hardest throwers on our staff,” mentioned Depew.

Runge missed his freshman year after undergoing arm surgery, but bounced back to fill a secondary role in the bullpen last year. The tallest player on the team at 6’8”, Runge yielded just five hits in eight innings as a sophomore, but walked 15 hitters.

“Taylor has been our project,” smiled Depew. “He has ironed out his control issues and had a good fall. He has Ryan Ebner the capability and mentality to be a starter for us.”

Weigel turned into one of the team’s top relievers by the end of last year. He pitched 23.0 innings in 14 appearances and yielded just four earned runs over his final seven outings (9.2 innings).

“Dan had some really good outings in the fall and will possibly be one of our weekend starters,” said Depew, without mentioning a potential rotation of Ebner (6’7”), Boehm (6’6”), Runge (6’8”) and Weigel (6’6”) would rival a basketball frontcourt’s size.

Depew also noted that Hough was productive during the fall and has a chance to jump right in and contribute.

Senior All-Patriot League selection Alex Cillo will anchor the bullpen, although Depew has also toyed with moving him into the rotation. The versatile righty posted a 0.56 ERA against Patriot League opponents last year, totaling 46.0 innings out of the bullpen. His 1.96 overall ERA led the team and he concluded the year by pitching eight scoreless innings of relief to earn the win in Bucknell’s thrilling 1-0 16-inning victory over Navy in the Patriot League Tournament.

“Alex has made improvements every single year he has been here,” praised Depew. “We are still kicking around what his role is going to be, but he is certainly capable of repeating his All-League season. He offers us flexibility, but is so valauable in that setup role that the performance of others will likely determine where we eventually use him.”

Two-way players and seniors Matt Lamore and Russell Seidell will also factor into the pitching depth. Lamore, who also plays the outfield and DH, has made 28 appearances on the mound and logged 43.2 innings over the last two years. Seidell, one of four left-handers on the staff, had a solid 4.22 ERA in 11 outings last spring.

Sophomore Jack McLinden rounds out the list of returning pitchers. The lanky right-hander can be used as a starter or reliever after seeing just 5.2 innings of work in 2011.

“We have 14 pitchers, which is a good number,” w ssaid Depew. “It’s a good, ssolid group with a lot of balaance. They are all heading in tthe right direction, which is a credit to their approach as well as pitching coach Scott w Heather and the job he does H with them.” w CATCHER: Bucknell has tthree returning players at Jack Boehm talks with ccatcher, including incumbent catcher Justin Meier sstarter Scott Reed. A career .266 hitter, Reed started a ccareer-high 45 games last yyear after splitting duties with All-Patriot Leaguer and w ffuture professional player B.J. LaRosa as a sophomore B iin 2010. Reed, who spent the fall semester abroad in Spain, hit in the cleanup spot much of last year, providing protection for Shribman.

Sophomore Justin Meier returns after a solid rookie campaign. He hit .300 in 21 appearances, including nine starts. The Illinois native was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week on April 19 after his first career fourhit contest at Navy.

Fellow sophomore Tom Hrabchak saw limited action a year ago, but Depew has seen plenty of improvement from him in the offseason.

“They all have different things they bring to the game,” commented Depew. “Scotty is just a little more consistent because of his experience.”

Freshman Marcus Hernandez will be added to the catching mix in 2012.

Depew compares him to Meier in terms of athletic ability and thinks he will be a contributor down the road.

FIRST BASE: The graduation of Shribman left a gaping hole at first base since he played nearly every inning of every game over the latter part of his career. However, Depew has some options to help fill in for Shribman. Seidell, who will also see some time on the mound, enters the preseason as the favorite to win the position. A veteran of just 46 career at bats, Seidell is expected to go back to being a switch-hitter this season. He is a natural lefthander, but spent the fall hitting from both sides pretty well.

Sophomore Luke Lombardi spent his rookie campaign as a valuable pinch hitter, but he should see some time at first base this year. Additionally, the team’s leading hitter in the fall — freshman Rob Krentzman — should battle for playing time.

MIDDLE INFIELD: Robb Scott (SS), Travis Clark (2B) and Scott Glass (backup) saw the majority of playing time up the middle in 2011 and all three return for their junior years. That trio, as well as sophomore left-handed hitting shortstop Corey Furman, gives the Bison plenty of depth at both second base and shortstop.

Clark produced the most offensively of the returning players as he hit .274 and tied for third on the team with four home runs.

Newcomers to the middle infield positions include junior shortstop Carter Bumgardner, a transfer from Maryland by way of a junior college, and freshman Greg Wasikowski, who has very good defensive skills, according to Depew.

THIRD BASE: Two-year starter David Duffett will return to anchor the thrid base position once again. After hitting just .225 as a sophomore in 2010, Duffett upped that mark to a solid .286 last spring. In fact, he is the team’s second-leading returning hitter, behind only fellow senior Gerry Runyan.

Duffett was particularly strong against Patriot League opponents, recording a .361 average during regular-season conference play.

“David has made progress every year. We need him to continue that improvement and be one our leaders both offensively and defensively,” remarked Depew.

Sophomore Will Mooney will serve as the durable Duffett’s backup for a second straight year. The Princeton, N.J., native hit .333 in limited action as a rookie. In addition to third base duties, Mooney could see some time at designated hitter.

OUTFIELD: Despite having just six outfielders on its roster, Bucknell is in pretty good shape with the potential of three senior starters. Senior Bob Donato will hold down the center field spot for a fourth straight year, while classmate Gerry Runyan is penciled in at right field for a second consecutive campaign. Depew lists senior Mark Figgie as the frontrunner to replace Constable entering preseason practice.

One of the team’s top players over the course of his career, Donato was a Second Team All-Patriot League choice as a junior after hitting .278 with 10 home runs and 34 RBIs. His 17 career round-trippers rank 12th on the program’s all-time list, and he is closing in on the top 10 in a number of other offensive categories as well.

Runyan’s .330 batting average last year was a career best after he was inserted into the regular starting lineup for the first time in his career. He accumulated a team-high 21 multi-hit outings and posted nine two-hit contests in the final 13 regular-season games.

Figgie has seen limited playing time over his first three campaigns, but Depew sees some potential in the veteran.

“Left field will be a position we define as we go along, depending on if Mark can get it done,” said Depew about filling the starting position in the outfield. “I’d like to see him be the choice because if you go through the program for four years you deserve a chance to play.”

Junior Matt Busch, who has a lot of pop in his bat, and sophomores Brett Ashley and Colby Vanderbeck will also be in the outfield mix. The hulking Ashley saw the most playing time of that trio a year ago, recording eight hits in 36 at bats. Vanderbeck posted seven hits, mostly early in the campaign.

BISON NOTEBOOK • Bucknell has had tremendous success within the Patriot League. The Bison w won their fifth Patriot League Tourw nament title in 2010 and advanced to n tthe NCAA Tournament for the fifth ttime in program history. Bucknell also won league titles and earned berths in w tthe NCAA Tournament in 1996, 2001, 2003 and 2008.

• Bucknell has posted four consecutive 20-win seasons. It is only the second ttime in program history the Bison Gerry Runyan have accomplished the feat, having h done it six straight times from 1996 to 2001. The 102 wins for Bucknell over that four-year span is the fourth-most victories in any four-year period in the 125-year history of the program.

Most Wins in a Four-Year Span 1. 1998-01: 109 2. 1996-99: 105 3. 1997-00: 103 4. 2008-11: 102 • Bucknell’s 124 home runs over the past two campaigns is a program record in a two-year span. The 2010 Bison hit a record 75 round-trippers, while the 2011 squad hit 49 more. The previous single-season mark was 50 by the 1997 team. Much of the long-ball damage in 2010 and 2011 was done by Doug Shribman, who hit 37 home runs during that span and finished his career with a record 43, more than doubling the previous standard of 21 that had stood when he enrolled at Bucknell in the fall of 2007.

• Senior Bob Donato and 2011 graduate Doug Shribman combined for 26 home runs in 2011. That marked the fifth-most home runs by two Bison teammates in program history.

A two-out bouncing single up the middle in the top of the 16th inning by Bob Donato plated the only run in the marathon game that saw the Bison receive eight shutout innings from both Patriot League Pitcher of the Year, starter Ryan Ebner, and All-Patriot League reliever Alex Cillo.

• Bucknell’s Class of 2011 graduated with three Patriot League titles. The Bison won tournament crowns in 2008 and 2010, and claimed the regularseason championship in 2009.

• Bucknell had six All-Patriot League selections last spring. The Bison tied Navy for the most All-Patriot League players. Ryan Ebner was named Pitcher of the Year, joining Mike Tomko (1996), Mike Anders (1998) and Kevin Miller (2003) as Bison to earn that honor. Joining Ebner on the first team were three-time All-League choice Doug Shribman and Drew Constable. Alex Cillo, Bob Donato and Matt Lamore were second-team choices. Of the six AllPatriot League players, only Shribman was a repeat selection.

• Drew Constable and Doug Shribman were named to the Capital One Academic All-District II First Team in 2011. It marked the sixth straight year at least two Bison baseball players had been recognized. The Bucknell baseball program has had at least one Academic All-District selection in 12 of the last 13 years. Overall, 41 Bison have been cited a total of 60 times since 1983.

• Bucknell used just four different starting pitchers in its Patriot League games in 2011. Since-graduated Trey Frahler and Dylan Seeley, as well as current seniors Jack Boehm and Ryan Ebner each made five starts in Patriot League contests.

• Bucknell played well down the stretch in 2011, winning nine of its final 13 regular-season contests. The Bison were 7-2 opposite Patriot League foes during that span.

• Bucknell’s bullpen, anchored by All-Patriot League reliever Alex Cillo, posted a stellar 2.21 ERA over the team’s final 20 games in 2011.

• Twenty-three of Bucknell’s 25 victories in 2011 came when the opponent scored five runs or fewer.

• Senior outfielder Bob Donato enters 2012 just shy of appearing on a number of career record lists. He is five games played, four runs scored, two hits, 18 RBIs, one sacrifice fly and one sacrifice bunt short of showing up in the Bison record books in those categories. His name is already listed among the all-time leaders in games started, at bats, doubles, home runs and total bases.

• Luke Lombardi enters 2012 with the longest intact hitting streak at three games. Bob Donato’s streak of seven straight games reaching base tops the squad in that category.

• Bucknell returns seven regular position starters and two regular starting pitchers. The Bison lost just four total starters (Drew Constable, Trey Frahler, Dylan Seeley, Doug Shribman) to graduation.

• Ryan Ebner enters 2012 ranked 10th in program history in strikeouts per nine innings (7.17). Fellow starting pitcher Jack Boehm is listed fifth in walks per nine innings (2.39).

• Bucknell posted a 10-7 record at Depew Field in 2011, its first above-.500 finish at home since going 14-6 in 2008.

Guided by four-time Patriot League Coach of the Year, Gene Depew, the Bucknell baseball team annually ranks near the top of the Patriot League. The Bison have been especially successful over the last 16 years, finishing in the top two in the Patriot League eight times, winning five Patriot League Tournament titles and claiming the regular-season crown six times. Additionally, Depew has guided Bucknell to five NCAA Tournament appearances over that span.

Since 1996, Bucknell has broken the 20-win plateau 12 times, including three 30-win campaigns, and Depew’s career winning percentage of .464 (570-660-7) is the best at Bucknell since William Lane’s career ended in 1957.

Depew, who is entering his 31st season in the dugout as the Bison head coach, shows no signs of slowing down as he recently guided Bucknell to a Patriot League title in three consecutive seasons. In 2008 and 2010 the Bison won PL Tournament crowns, while in 2009 they claimed the regular-season championship.

The 2010 title was Bucknell’s fifth tournament crown and NCAA berth under Depew’s watch. The fourth-seeded Bison won best-of-three series at top-seeded Army and second-seeded Holy Cross on back-to-back weekends to claim their second Patriot League crown in three years.

In 2009, Depew helped the Bison earn their sixth regular-season Patriot League title as he oversaw a 13-7 conference campaign.

In 2008, Depew guided Bucknell to perhaps the biggest win in program history when it defeated No. 4 nationally ranked Florida State 7-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. It was just the fourth time a Patriot League team won an NCAA postseason game.

On an individual level, Depew has won the Patriot League Coach of the Year award four times (1993, 1996, 2003, 2009), has had four Patriot League Pitchers of the Year (Mike Tomko, 1996; Mike Anders, 1998; Kevin Miller, 2003; Ryan Ebner, 2011), four Players of the Year (Kevin Silverman, 1996; Frank Fresconi, 2000; Jason Buursma, 2008; Andrew Brouse, 2010) and two Rookies of the Year (Phil Futrick, 2003; Ben Yoder, 2007). Depew has also led 65 student-athletes to 101 Patriot League first- and second-team accolades. In the classroom, Bucknell baseball has had 11 CoSIDA Academic AllAmericans since 1992, including Jason Buursma, who was named to the first team in 2008.

A 1971 Bucknell graduate, Depew has the longest tenure of any coach in Bucknell baseball history. At 31 years, he has headed the program more than twice as long as second-place Tommy Thompson, who served as head coach for 15 years. He has directed his teams to 570 victories, more than five times the amount of any other coach in school history. To honor that, Bucknell’s baseball field was renamed Depew Field during the 2003 season.

A native of Mifflintown, Pa., Depew was the recipient of both bachelor and master of science degrees in education from Bucknell. Football was the first sport for which Depew was a coach, as he oversaw the Bison gridders’ defensive line from 1972-1992. It was in 1974 that Depew began his current occupation, first as an assistant coach for the baseball team until 1981, after which he assumed the lead role.

As an undergraduate, Depew was a standout football player for the Bison.

He was a three-year letterwinner and co-captained the squad in 1970. He played every position on the defensive line, and was described by his head coach as “being as hard-nosed as they come. He has excellent speed and size for a defensive lineman.” In 1969, he was named All-Middle Atlantic Conference honorable mention. Depew has two brothers who also played football for Bucknell, Terry (’73) and Alvin (’81).

Depew and his wife, Debbie, reside in Mifflinburg and are the parents of a daughter, Erin, a 2006 graduate of Bucknell, and a son, William, a 2010 Bucknell graduate.

Assistant Coach • Eighth Season Arkansas ’03 Former University of Arkansas pitcher Scott Heather begins his eighth season as pitching coach for the Bison. Under Heather’s direction, Bucknell’s pitching staff has posted an ERA of under 4.50 three times. The staff had a 4.30 ERA in 2006, marking the team’s lowest since 1983 (4.10).

During his tenure, Heather has tutored a number of outstanding pitchers, including 2011 Patriot League Pitcher of the Year Ryan Ebner, who has progressed from a hard-throwing lefty reliever who saw limited time early in his career to the top pitcher in the league. Additionally, Heather oversaw the development of 2008 graduates Jason Buursma and Mathew Wilson. Those two former Bison claimed back-to-back Patriot League ERA titles, while Buursma earned a pair of First Team All-Patriot League selections as a relief pitcher.

Wilson, who was the 2007 Patriot League ERA champion, was a Second Team All-Patriot League selection in 2008, broke the school record for career shutouts (5) and pitched a complete-game shutout against nationally ranked Florida State in the NCAA Tournament.

Heather helped 2011 graduates Trey Frahler and Dylan Seeley become one of the best pair of starters in the Patriot League late in their careers. Seeley was a Second Team All-Patriot League selection as a junior, while Frahler was among the league leaders in ERA, strikeouts, innings, starts and complete games that same year.

Frahler and then-senior Chris Yamaguchi finished second and third, respectively, in the Patriot League ERA race in 2009 under Heather’s watch.

Yamaguchi bounced back from arm surgery, while Frahler improved his ERA by nearly 6.00 from his rookie campaign.

Heather has seen a pitcher from the Bison staff selected in three of the last six Major League Baseball Drafts. Buursma was drafted in 2007 (42nd round

by Seattle Mariners) and 2008 (25th round by St. Louis Cardinals), while Kyle Walter was selected in the 18th round of the 2006 draft by the Toronto Blue Jays. Heather worked closely with Walter during his days in Orange and Blue to transition from position player to pitcher.

In addition to his duties with the Bucknell pitching staff, Heather serves as the primary recruiter for the Bison.

Prior to his arrival in Lewisburg in the summer of 2004, Heather served as an assistant coach for Arkansas-Fort Smith from 1999 to 2004.

Heather began his playing career at Arizona Western College in Yuma, Ariz., where he was MVP of the 1996 team that was ranked third nationally, before moving on to Arkansas. Heather lettered for the Razorbacks as a pitcher in 1997 and 1998, then became a student assistant in 1999 when Arkansas won its first Southeastern Conference championship. He also pitched professionally for the Duluth Dukes of the Northern League in 1998.

Lewisburg native Jim Gulden enters his sixth season as an assistant coach for Bucknell and is responsible for working with the Bison hitters and catchers while also serving as the team’s gameday bullpen coach.

Gulden was drafted out of Lewisburg Area High School, where he graduated in 2000, by the Monh ttreal Expos in the 47th round. He aattended Virginia Tech and was a member of the Hokies’ baseball m ssquad for two years before transfferring to Cleveland State, where he graduated in 2005 with a degree h iin communications.

Gulden previously served as h head junior varsity baseball coach aand varsity assistant coach at Lewiisburg High School.

#19 Jason Neitz

Assistant Coach • Second Season East Carolina ’06 Former professional baseball player Jason Neitz joined the Bucknell staff in the winter of 2011. A native of nearby Mifflinburg, Pa., Neitz was drafted in the 37th round of the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft by the San Francisco Giants.

A 2002 graduate of Mifflinburg Area High School, Neitz played baseball for four years at East Carolina before graduating in the fall of 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. A left-handed pitcher, Neitz was 3-2 with an ERA of 4.71 in 80.1 career innings over 43 appearances with the Pirates.

He recorded 55 strikeouts.

Neitz played professionally for four seasons, three in the Giants organization, and most recently one with the Washington Wild Things.

Neitz got his start in the coaching profession as an assistant at Mifflinburg Area High School in the spring of 2010.

The Bucknell baseball team’s strength and conditioning is in the hands of Bob Curtis, a former Bucknell football coach, and fitness and conditioning coordinator Jerry Shreck.

They have at their disposal Bucknell’s top-notch 15,000 square foot Krebs Family Fitness Center, which opened during the 2002-03 school year.

The general philosophy of the Bison fitness program is year-round periodization with a high-intensity base, supplemented with functional and sportspecific training. Training programs for most teams will employ explosion techniques with power bands and pliometrics.

The ultimate goal of the fitness and conditioning program is the prevention of injuries and training athletes to their peak physical condition, as opposed to training for bodybuilding.

As the head football coach from 1975-85, Curtis compiled a 48-56-3 record.

His 48 wins are tied for the most wins by any coach in school history.

• Spent three years in the Dodgers’ minor league system, putting together a highly successful 2001 campaign with the AA Jacksonville Suns. Went 10-11 with a 3.46 ERA with 116 strikeouts in 164.0 innings with Jacksonville.

• Came within one out of a nine-inning no-hitter and later posted a seveninning no-hitter against Lehigh, marking the fourth no-hitter in Bucknell history. It was also the closest a Bison had ever come to a perfect game with two hit batsmen separating Daley from perfection.

• Made major league debut April 25, 2009 and pitched one scoreless inning of relief in the National League Division Series with the Rockies. Posted a 1-1 record with a 4.24 ERA in 51.0 innings during regular season.

• Went 0-1 with a 4.24 ERA in 23.1 innings over 28 appearances in 2010 with Colorado. Battled injuries in 2011 and pitched in 24 total games for the Rockies (7) and Colorado Springs Sky Sox (17).

• Steadily moved up the Rockies’ minor league organization. Played with the Class A Casper Rockies (2004), Asheville Tourists (2005) and Modesto Nuts (2006) in his first three professional seasons.

PATRIOT LEAGUE/MISSION STATEMENT Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 23 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown and MIT as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country.

Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League finished at the top spot with nearly all of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition, 82 teams from Patriot League full-member institutions earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after posting academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports.

The Patriot League’s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the 2010-11 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams have accomplished the following: *Patriot League schools came in with glowing marks in the latest release of the NCAA Academic Progress Rate, as 97 percent of Patriot League teams came in at or above the national Division I four-year average score of 970. *Bucknell claimed the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup for the 17th time overall and sixth consecutive season. The Bison also won their eighth male trophy and 17th female award, sweeping the honors for the second straight year and seventh time overall. *Six different schools claimed multiple Patriot League titles, led by Navy with seven and Bucknell with six. Lehigh and Army each won three championships while Colgate and American claimed a pair. *Bucknell’s Travis Nissley was named a finalist for the Campbell Trophy and earned an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship from the National Football Foundation. *Navy tennis standout Nick Birger was part of a select group of student-athletes to receive a $7,500 postgraduate scholarship from the NCAA. *11 student-athletes have been named Capital One/CoSIDA Academic AllAmericans, including: Erin Anthony, Army (Women’s Basketball); Nathan Hedgecock, Army (Men’s Basketball); Travis Nissley, Bucknell (Football); Sam Miller and Alex Foskett, Navy (Men’s Soccer); Ben Koenigsfeld, Army (Baseball); Jay Laing, Army and Jonathan Stumpf, Lehigh (Men’s Lacrosse); Nick Birger, Navy (Men’s Tennis); Alyssa DeLorenz, Bucknell (Women’s Lacrosse) and Cody Rome, Navy (Men’s Track and Field) *55 Patriot League student-athletes have earned Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District honors, with 39 on the first team. *Candidates for Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award included: Erin Anthony, Army (Women’s Basketball); Stefan Bauer, Lafayette (Men’s Lacrosse); Jonathan Stumpf, Lehigh (Men’s Lacrosse); Rob Keefer, Lehigh (Men’s Basketball); Andrew Keister, Holy Cross (Men’s Basketball); Erica Prosser, Lehigh (Women’s Basketball); Ben Koenigsfeld, Army (Baseball); Friederike Engel, American (Women’s Soccer); Jessie Snyder, Bucknell (Softball). *Army’s Erin Anthony concluded an outstanding career with First-Team Academic All-America recognition for the second year in a row and a nomination from the Patriot League for the NCAA Woman of the Year award. *American’s Christine Fingerhuth was named a first-team All-America selection in field hockey and also received an NCAA Woman of the Year nomination from the Patriot League. *Colgate’s Nate Eachus finished sixth in the voting for the Walter Payton Award, given to the Most Outstanding Player in the Football Championship Subdivision. *Lehigh’s Will Rackley became the Presidents’ Cup Champions highest-ever NFL Draft selection out of 1991 — Bucknell 2002 — Bucknell the Patriot League when he was picked 1992 — Bucknell 2003 — Bucknell in the third round by the Jacksonville 1993 — Bucknell 2004 — Bucknell Jaguars.

Bucknell Athletics & Recreation Mission Statement The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University.

The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leadership of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff ’s paramount responsibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek.

Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recreational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell.

The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership iis valuable not only because this level of ccompetition maximally challenges stud dent-athletes, but also because it signals cclearly Bucknell’s high standards and serriousness of purpose in all extracurricular eendeavors and it helps position Bucknell aapart from other National Liberal Arts C Colleges. The Presidents’ Cup The Presidents’ Cup signifies overall excellence in the 23 sports sponsored by the Patriot League, and Bucknell has won the Cup 17 times in its 21-year existence, including 13 of the last 14 years.

The Presidents’ Cup is awarded annually to the institution that accumulates the highest point total over the entire academic year, with points awarded on the basis of the school’s finish in each of the 23 Patriot League sports.

If there is a league tournament in a sport, the points are awarded based on the average of the regular season and tournament finish, and if there is no post-season tournament, points are awarded based on regular-season standings. ngs

The Plan for Bucknell Bucknell is a unique national university where liberal arts and professional programs complement each other, where 3,583 full-time students are educated for a lifetime of critical thinking and strong leadership. For nearly 170 years, the University has remained true to its fundamental purpose: to educate and prepare students for lives that make a difference and have a positive impact on the world.

In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.”

The Plan comprises five strategies.

Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell education is challenging and engaging, with openness to new ideas and a culture of innovation; Deepen the Residential Learning Experience will provide a residential learning and living experience that complements the academic program, integrates the athletics and recreation program and promotes personal growth and development and civic and ethical responsibility; Enhance Diversity is a commitment to diversity in all its forms within a civil and supportive environment of open exchange to prepare Bucknell graduates to live and work in a globally integrated and intercultural world; Build Bridges will bring the world to Bucknell — through visiting scholars and sports teams, international students and alumni, guest speakers, international focus semesters, and electronic communications — and bring Bucknell to the world through strategic partnerships and community engagement activities as well as opportunities for off-campus study and faculty research; Secure Our Financial Future will secure resources necessary to engage new opportunities, lessen dependence on tuition, and ensure our financial future.

The Plan for Bucknell was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees on April 29, 2006, having previously been approved by the students and faculty. We have begun implementing it and are determined to make it a reality over the next decade.
